Africa is a 1982 single from the rock band Toto, taken from their album Toto IV. In 2021, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song at 452 on its list of the 500 best songs of all time.
Your reaction just brought this 70-year-old white guy to tears. I loved this song when it first came out over 40 years ago, and it has passed the test of time.
@@rileyandmike The song is about Africa, which is clearly not where my ancestry is from. But I am still touched by it. Not sure why you're trying to turn this into something more than that...

This is the best reaction to a song that someone was already familiar with! Toto were key contributors on the production of Michael Jackson's Thriller! They are still together and getting ready for another tour. Finally saw them perform a few years ago! Amazing show! First time watching your video. Won't be the last! God bless beautiful!
I have never seen such a powerful emotional reaction to this song, but, I GET IT! There is something about that chorus that just gets the feels all up in a fervor! There's what I call a "cry" factor, not just cos that's how it makes some listeners feel and react, but it's how the vocals, or even the occasional guitar solo or sex solo sounds. Greta reaction! I love to see anybody express such an emotive response to music. The album this song is from, (Toto IV, 1983) is an absolute must-have for any music collection. Just about every song from start to finish is great : Rosanna, We Made It Before, Lovers In The Night, Afraid Of Love, Make Believe, It's Feeling, Waiting For Your Love. Most are more upbeat and rockin, but It's A Feeling is real chill and mellow. Other notable hits include Georgy Porgy, and Hold The Line (from Toto I, 1978).
I have seldom seen someone enjoy a single song so much, have to listen to Hold The Line also, thanks for letting your emotions show, continue to enjoy music that touches your Heart!❤
Dearest Blessing, you bring out the emotions many of us also feel, and each time you give us a beautiful experience when you open your soul to the music in your reactions❤ How lovely it is to be on this journey together ! I love it too. Thanks for sharing with us. The other comment on this song is about the drummer; although, it was written and sung by Toto's founder, keyboardist, and main song writer, David Paich. It's mainly about his personal life, using Africa a metaphor; inspired by a TV program about Africa and the plight of it's people,
I recall reading that the band met some missionsaries who travelled to Africa and when the band asked what they did down there. They said they "blessed the rain" for what I expect was some drought people were experiencing. I love this song. It does feel very deep and it's just mysterious enough that each person can draw from it.

Art in its way has the ability to nurture the future. We are and they were in that way parents to you and therefore the future. Their motivation for song was love and imagination, apparently having never been to Africa before.
From Rolling Stone: ‘Toto’s Africa is a place that doesn’t exist and never did - this song has nothing to do with the continent, unless you count that groovy synth-kalimba solo. But the song turns out to be a map of today’s America, which is why it’s much bigger now than it was in the Eighties. As Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro summed it up, “A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he’s never been there, he can only tell what he’s seen on TV or remembers in the past.” The singer is so deep in his feelings, he barely notices where he is-hence the hilarious “whoa dude, there’s a mountain” moment when “Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti.” Needless to freaking say, you can’t see Kilimanjaro from the Serengeti, which is a couple hundred miles away. Does it matter? The whole point of “Africa” is that you’re nowhere at all.” By the way, I love how you get so involved in your reactions.
I love your reaction i was watching your video first time because i love toto and i will recommend hold the line and Rosanna best their songs but Africa is number one for sure...grettings from Croatia 🇭🇷

Bobby Kimball - voice David Paich - voice, keyboard Steve Lukather - acoustic guitar, backing vocals David Hungate - bass Steve Porcaro - solo keyboard Jeff Porcaro - drums, bell, gong, percussion
When keyboardist David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro wrote "Africa", guitarist Steve Lukather didn't think this song was right for the band, and he vowed that if it would ever become a hit, he would go naked in public. He never followed up on that.
Awesome reaction, never seen anyone pull out the tissues, but I love it! Please react to their song Georgy Porgy, from their debut album in 1978. Cheryl Lynn does a guest vocal on it.
A few years ago, the drummer was having a party at his house and before it he used some sort of weed cleaner in his garden and was allergic to it and it killed him. So sad
Singer David Paich explained that the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. He based the lyrics on a late night documentary with depictions of African plight and suffering. The viewing experience made a lasting impact on Paich: "It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about it if I was there and what I'd do." Jeff Porcaro elaborates further, explaining: "A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past."
Toto is made up of all studio musicians. Atlanta Rhythm Section was also formed by studio musicians. That’s why their music is so clean , precise and interesting. This just in…they’re pretty good.
I remember this song when it came out in the US in late 82. I see why it could be emotional to you. I have a request for a very sad song called "Biko" that was a tribute song written about a brave man named Steve Biko, who was an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa and was arrested August of 1977 for breaking his banning order to speak out against apartheid. He was held naked in a cell and routinely beaten. On September 11th, he was beaten so badly by police that he was, "loaded into the back of a Land Rover, naked and manacled, and driven 740 miles to the hospital. There, Biko died alone in a cell on 12 September 1977. According to an autopsy, an "extensive brain injury" had caused "centralization of the blood circulation to such an extent that there had been intranasal blood coagulation, acute kidney failure, and uremia". He was the twenty-first person to die in a South African prison in twelve months. This song was written and released in 1980 by an English Rock musician that had many hit songs throughout the eighties. This video version is the most graphic version. Toto is a band made up totally of studio musicians. Some of them even played on Michael Jackson albums and for many other famous artists. You can hear in the arrangements and the musical structure of their songs that they are pros. (I mean, only take the keyboard solo, the key changes throughout the song and the layered voices in the Chorus of this song „Africa“!)

You know which song does this to me? Man In The Mirror by Michael Jackson. Still can’t watch the video or hear the song without bawling like a baby. I dare you to not cry to that one.
Just for fun, on your own time, you might like to listen to Mike Masse and Jeff Hall doing an acoustic/electric bass cover of Africa. They're doing the cover in a pizza joint in Salt Lake City, Utah. It's just for fun, for the customers. Anyways, they do a really good job for two guys. I like Toto's original better, of course, but I watch this cover every once in awhile. Thanks for letting us watch this with you! God bless you and your loved ones! Hope you are doing well Blessing. 😊❤🙏
I am well Richard I appreciate you
Young Lady, You are doing a great job! Please check out the song Diamonds On The Souls Of Her Shoes, by Paul Simon. It is with a South African Band, Lady Black Mumbasa, in 1986. Keep up the great work My Fine Lady! ❤❤❤
Toto is a band made up totally of studio musicians. Some of them even played on Michael Jackson albums and for many other famous artists. You can hear in the arrangements and the musical structure of their songs that they are pros. (I mean, only take the keyboard solo, the key changes throughout the song and the layered voices in the Chorus of this song „Africa“!)
hold the line, should be the next song by them you should do. great song
Tranquila Bonita. Me ha impresionado tu rección. Se que tiene mucho significado y espero que seas muy feliz en tu vida. Un abrazo desde España (muy cerca de Africa ;) visitanos cuando quieras.

You know which song does this to me? Man In The Mirror by Michael Jackson. Still can’t watch the video or hear the song without bawling like a baby. I dare you to not cry to that one.
❤️❤️🔥
Classic banger!
Praying for a very Merry Christmas for you, and a wonderful 2025! edit: guess I should have put a link in here - ruclips.net/video/MLrC7e3vSv8/видео.html

My dear Blessings, you are so beautiful when you are trying not to cry. Music is the unifying force across all cultures, no matter the language or mindset. It was what created the material world and still connects us to pure spirit.
Rosanna should be the next song you check out by them❤️
I believe the woman with glasses is supposed to be the librarian.
Oh that’s a plot twist thanks for sharing

Just to let you know the chorus phrase is "I bless the rains down in Africa" not "I miss the rains in Africa"
Please listen to Johanna as well
Try Perpetuum Jazzile performing this song.
It would have been a very good idea at the end to read through the lyrics and also react to the words.
