You see this is what I like to see from Steam. A competent effort being played by a critic who is giving useful feedback. Will look out for this with better sound design and improved horror.
+My name is Byf I was going to comment something like that. Notice how a genuinely well-made attempt that shows effort and promise makes the horror actually work, instead of it just being a joke.
+Power Pak Nah man, he's doing his fake elevator party trick! He was trying to impress Jim, maybe get his number and find out if he likes that little Thai place across town.
The thing I like most about this is that it's the right kind of dark, the kind where, for the most part, you can still see perfectly well, except sometimes you can't, and that makes you feel like you are suddenly vulnerable. That's how darkness is supposed to work.
Digital Homicide should learn from this developer. He previously made Gynophobia and you can clearly see how much he improved from that game to this one.
That title sounded familiar and I realized Jim did a video on that. Hard to believe 10 months have passed since then... but also there's a book in that game called "Son of Inquisition by Jim Ster" Also, same loading screen.
And he also doesn't lash out when his work is criticised it seems. I don't recall exactly, but I think he might have been one of the devs who responded to Jim's video on his previous game and did so in a civilised manner.
The developer of this game made Gynophobia, a game that was featured in another Jim video. He seems to have learnt from his mistakes because this game looks better.
Whoah, that's actually cool. I mean, Gynophobia already had some cool ideas in it like the game inside the game, but too much was generic, and worst of all, it only lasted half an hour. I'm hoping this one has a bit more longevity. If he's smart, it kinda has to, since refunds are now a thing.
I really dig the idea of a horror game that doesn't try to shove your face into the scary moments. The teddy bear and the ghost behind the window at 15:27 were pretty neat.
15:30 on the right. I love that the game actually does not over hype it's monster. It just shows up in the background without any fanfare or chords that James does not even notice it, but its more than enough to subconsciously put you on edge. That's subtlety right there. Also it implies they can't chase James in churches, so even more points since it shows insight on how these beings work.
Ehm I think just about everyone in the whole world have heard "and deliver us from evil for yours is the power and glory". Basically the most well known part of the most well known prayer. Anyone who grew up in a western country would have heard that at least as a child, even if your parents weren't christian
Shadow ghost 1: We need to tell him we need fresh souls Shadow ghost 2: Hold on, I'll float by him to see if I can see his number *Sometime later* Shadow ghost 2: It's 07... *Shadow ghost 1 sends a text to the player; "We need fresh souls"*
I actually played this as a play-test sort of thing, the game has pretty interesting environmental design. A lot of the story is implied and the rewards the player who pays attention to their surroundings. Can't wait for the definitive version to come out.
25:44 In regards to that thing we are not going to talk about: I increased my Patreon pledge in response to this news which we aren't going to talk about. I encourage others to do the same at least until such time as the event we aren't going to talk about is settled. #istandwithjim
My favourite part was 9:24, when the dog was territorial, and backed up when you did. Most games on steam early acess would have it charging at you at half the speed of its running animation along with fifteen other dogs that would chase you to the ends of the earth.
An example of a good open world horror game would be STALKER. This is reminding me a lot of that game actually, the ambient noise sounds almost the same.
+Kolbe Howard Stalker knew how to create horror-esq tension, but without depowering bullshit, but full of fear of the unknown (new growls - new unknown super interesting type of the enemy. known growls - unknown location of the enemy) etc. It did not pulled the horror bullshit on you with immortal / bulletspoongy enemies (yup, i'm looking at you-witch from L4D), etc. Another 100% Fair Horror game was for me Alien:Isolation - it almost never pulled horror-movie (/horror-game) bullshit logic on you (well, maybe 1-2 times, but it wasn't the Outlast level of bullshit that's for sure).
+Zakhaedrun Yeah... so many little double-take scares as well as some jump scares. Personally, while I think jump scares aren't the cancer everyone makes them out to be, I like double-take scares... scares that you might miss.
+hardy83 Any flashlight company that hires Jim to promote their product is going to make mad bank. I can see the ad campaign now: "Hello, you hobgoblin hemorrhoids! Jim Fucking Sterling Son here, for Apollo Flashlight Corporation -- makers of the ONLY decent bloody torch on the market. Other torches are just utter, cocking bollocks. You can't see shit! Pack an Apollo, but be careful not to look directly into the bulb if you're pointing it up at your face while telling spooky haunted house stories for camping fun time. Or buy the separate rubber vagina attachment, for an enlightening experience when you're in the mood for a cheeky little wank. NO BONES ABOUT IT!! Thank God for Apollo Flashlight Corporation!"
Some things I suggest. 1)Have a map. Helps to have a map anyway. 2)Have objects that can be picked up glow or something like that. 3)Some sort of HUD with some info. Not just a health with a number, something more. 4)I don't know if there is combat or not, but it better not be clunky or something like that! Otherwise nice game!
Good luck on the case Jim! I don't have any social network thing other than youtube so this is really the only way i can voice my support. Good luck to you, hope everything goes well!
You're remembering the British version of the Lord's Prayer, Jim (as we used to say at my school as well). The shortened version is how it's often said in the US.
I like the fact that the monsters aren't the only things that can kill you in this game- stuff like snakes in an open-world horror environment are something that people almost never think of. Just normal things in nature that can kill you.
Its nice to see Jim like an early access game, reminds us they're not all terrible, money grabbing, unity asset slinging rectal badgers. This is something I will definitely be putting on my Steam watch list and as always, thank God for Jim :)
No one should be afraid of the whole DH lawsuit, especially Jim. What I would love to hear about is what are Jim's plans to do after it's over. Will he sue DH back? Will it be DH that eventually has to pay Jim? Can't wait to see.
Yeah, wasn't too shabby. Sound design definitely needs some work, but I hope they don't feel the need to start adding scare chords in. That little bit with the bear in the doorway when you turned around was effective enough without it. If they could beef up the torch a little too, that'd be great. The effect looks decent, just doesn't really illuminate enough to pass as realistic. Improving that effect when a spirit passes into you is needed too, the face that popped up reminded me of the Retsupurae videos on the Arise series and it's Jpeg pop scares. Other than that, yeah, it has potential.
Right off the bat, you can tell this game is polished. How? The continue button is greyed out. Do you know how many TRIPLE-A games don't do that? Yet here is something from Greenlight/Early Access that does it.
Jim, just a friendly reminder to check on your state's SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation) laws. Providing this even makes it to trial. A judge may review the suit and decide it's not even worth hearing.
They've probably set that amount so high hoping Jim would settle for a few hundred thousand, like most people do in such cases. Thing is, they got no case so fuck em.
Now, I have confession to make, before the man who was given prophetic powers. I don't watch these videos about horror games even 1 minute - I just tune in to hear how Jim will greets us in every video :D
Fun fact about snakes. Pet snakes get depression if you aren't around and refuse to eat, thus deciding to die if you abandon them. In short, a snake that loves you will choose die if you disappear. If only your dog could show that type of dedication to your existence through committing an act of seppuku.
Very pleasurable experience this one. The sound direction I thought was marvelous. The graphics looked good too. Very simple game, but pretty engrossing. My only fear is that the game is almost over.
nice game! thanks for sharing! - you got to break that habit of looking behind you when being chased. the regenerating health is nice because it isn't fast
Definitely looked solid. I'm not even a horror fan but I watched this whole vid without skipping around so it definitely kept my attention. All the right elements for open world horror, with room for some improvements.
You see this is what I like to see from Steam. A competent effort being played by a critic who is giving useful feedback.
Will look out for this with better sound design and improved horror.
+Philly Cheese Certainly seems so.
+My name is Byf I was going to comment something like that. Notice how a genuinely well-made attempt that shows effort and promise makes the horror actually work, instead of it just being a joke.
*fuckbucket*
15:26 Jim tries to remember the Lord's prayer while SPOOKY SHADOW MAN FLIES PAST THE WINDOW
+Power Pak Should've spent more time playing Jesus RPG. :P
+Power Pak Damn, that's actually pretty creepy
+Power Pak Nah man, he's doing his fake elevator party trick! He was trying to impress Jim, maybe get his number and find out if he likes that little Thai place across town.
Jim, there in the windows! Ahh!
The thing I like most about this is that it's the right kind of dark, the kind where, for the most part, you can still see perfectly well, except sometimes you can't, and that makes you feel like you are suddenly vulnerable. That's how darkness is supposed to work.
"...kill two birds with one stone..."
>numerous birds fall out of sky
WE"VE GONE TOO FAR!
+David Dalmatian kill four birds with one stone
Digital Homicide should learn from this developer. He previously made Gynophobia and you can clearly see how much he improved from that game to this one.
I think the people at Digital Homicide lack the capacity to learn.
Really? Wow, this is a dramatic improvement.
+JonnyDoLake But it's so much easier to get butthurt and sue someone for 10 times the money you could ever hope to earn in a talentless lifetime.
The developer of this game made Gynophobia, a game that was featured in another Jim video. He seems to have learnt from his mistakes because this game looks better.

I really dig the idea of a horror game that doesn't try to shove your face into the scary moments. The teddy bear and the ghost behind the window at 15:27 were pretty neat.
Anyone else notice that the white ghost at the end healed him?
15:30 on the right.
I love that the game actually does not over hype it's monster. It just shows up in the background without any fanfare or chords that James does not even notice it, but its more than enough to subconsciously put you on edge.
That's subtlety right there.
Also it implies they can't chase James in churches, so even more points since it shows insight on how these beings work.
It's nice to see a horror game that understands subtlety.
6:30
FUCK!
That go me more than the entirety of Layers of Fear!
+Steve Tyler .
+Steve Tyler Thanks for the warning. Layers of Fear is super scary to me, you probably saved the pair of pants I'm wearing.
Nick Nirus yuck
I like the slow regeneration they have in this.
'I am fuckbuggered' is my new favorite expression! Jim, you are one of a kind!
Wish you the best, Jim. Keep making videos. We are with you.
15:18 That awkward moment when you recognize bible scripture, not because you've read it, but because you've heard it in metal songs.
Behemoth.
It's used in Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer, from their newest album, The Satanist
Ehm I think just about everyone in the whole world have heard "and deliver us from evil for yours is the power and glory". Basically the most well known part of the most well known prayer. ***** Apparently not everyone.
Shadow ghost 1: We need to tell him we need fresh souls
Shadow ghost 2: Hold on, I'll float by him to see if I can see his number
*Sometime later*
Shadow ghost 2: It's 07...
*Shadow ghost 1 sends a text to the player; "We need fresh souls"*
Ndi Ndi To send fresh souls, Text FRSH to 1010
I actually played this as a play-test sort of thing, the game has pretty interesting environmental design. A lot of the story is implied and the rewards the player who pays attention to their surroundings. Can't wait for the definitive version to come out.
15:28 - look at the window on the right... fuck I love this game :)
+MocnyBrowarek I noticed that aswell and immediatelly checked if someone posted it in comments haha.
am I the only one who saw that creepy thing at the window on the right hand side around 15:35?
15:30
Tragic that Jim didn't see it cos that was creepy
25:44 In regards to that thing we are not going to talk about:
I increased my Patreon pledge in response to this news which we aren't going to talk about.
I encourage others to do the same at least until such time as the event we aren't going to talk about is settled.
#istandwithjim
Wait what, an early access horror game with promise?!?
It's a miracle! It's a bloody Christmas miracle!
20 mins in and it looks like Jim didn't notice he picked up the key to the locked cabin.....
At least some developers respect the Steam Early Access.
My favourite part was 9:24, when the dog was territorial, and backed up when you did. Most games on steam early acess would have it charging at you at half the speed of its running animation along with fifteen other dogs that would chase you to the ends of the earth.
Jim the "Doom Guy" sound effect is part of the default unity FPS Controller which is why you see it so much.
An example of a good open world horror game would be STALKER. This is reminding me a lot of that game actually, the ambient noise sounds almost the same.
+Kolbe Howard
Stalker knew how to create horror-esq tension, but without depowering bullshit, but full of fear of the unknown (new growls - new unknown super interesting type of the enemy. known growls - unknown location of the enemy) etc.

I hope you counter sue the hell outta those shills. Good luck Jim!
That frog was the size of a rabbit!
"Promises, promises" made me laugh my ass off. I don't know why, it was the funniest sarcastic way to react in defiance to a creepy moment like that
7:48 That's one graceful big ol' rock.
At 15:03 the ghosts are staring in through the window
+Zakhaedrun Yeah... so many little double-take scares as well as some jump scares. Personally, while I think jump scares aren't the cancer everyone makes them out to be, I like double-take scares... scares that you might miss.
+Adam Sherman Jump scares aren't cancer, the cancer are the horror games that ONLY use jumpscares.
You got tons of support Jim! Keep doing what you do; we're behind you!
Good luck on the case, Jim!
the most scary enemy in the game was the snakes
Needs more lovecraft. Everything needs more lovecraft.
+noelie noelie I agree.
+Yog Sothoth Username on point.
(Is that an Imgur thing? Are we allowed to use that phrase on RUclips?)
By my power as the Old One in control of Time and Space, I grant you permission to use it on RUclips.
Thanks man! You can drive me mad with your dark whispers anytime, buddy.
+Adam Sherman got any hillybilly daughters?
You know it's a good flashlight when he doesn't complain about it.
+hardy83 Any flashlight company that hires Jim to promote their product is going to make mad bank. I can see the ad campaign now:
"Hello, you hobgoblin hemorrhoids! Jim Fucking Sterling Son here, for Apollo Flashlight Corporation -- makers of the ONLY decent bloody torch on the market. jim your gonna beat this bro my power is yours
6:39 "I am fuckbucket" - Jim fucking Sterling son 2016
Only problem with the video was....it was too dark ! :/
6:09 commonly used noise for the Rooster Teeth produced show, On The Spot.
I would expect Jim Fucking Sterling to know what a geiger counter is.
An early access horror game with promise? Wow.. Feels like it's been years since one of those.
+Urza26 The Early Acceses titles... they can be felled, they can be beaten!
Fair do's, that teddy bear actually freaked me out.
Safersephiroth777 And an option to disable some or all parts of the HUD is also a good idea.
Good luck on the case Jim! I don't have any social network thing other than youtube so this is really the only way i can voice my support. Good luck to you, hope everything goes well!
It always feels kinda surreal to look at a video this
early.
15:28 Jim misses that creepy black figure outside the window... it spooked me XD
Joshua Beaumont That's not gonna help me sleep tonight.
This game also uses Arma 3's buzzing sound at 7:29.
That church needs to update to the 2.3 bible patch
+Yotam Shitrit Isn't that the update where Jesus can fly and has laser eyes or was that in the beta.
+Awesometurtle98 Yeah, now they nerfed him to just walking on water and turning water into wine.
Also it takes him 2 days to respawn.
6:08 That's the sound from On The Spot, my friend. lol
That guy running out from the cave nearly gave me a hearthattack
You're remembering the British version of the Lord's Prayer, Jim (as we used to say at my school as well). The shortened version is how it's often said in the US.
"Curses a Ring Wraith! Fly you fool!"
15:30 the dark figure outside the window, I honestly got the creeps
What's weird is there is no jumping in Doom. But yeah that jump noise does sound a bit like the use sound in Doom.
Anyone notice the church locked him in, with shadows at the windows, but reading the prayer repelled them.
15:29 the ghoul in the window got me but not Jim.
+Bimmy Lee I don't think he even saw it
I remember that old prayer from school. Both actually.
Great proof of concept, I hope those behind it continue developing further
I'm glad you're trying something new Jim.
+John Doe Lol
That guy with the spade made me jump...twice.
What events was he talking about in the end?
You should take a look at Blackwood. It is another Early Access Horror Game, that shows very large promise!
Damn, I had no idea they actually took action. I'm shocked, but not, ultimately, surprised. I'm glad you're confident. Good luck.
No one should be afraid of the whole DH lawsuit, especially Jim.
What I would love to hear about is what are Jim's plans to do after it's over. Will he sue DH back? Will it be DH that eventually has to pay Jim? Can't wait to see.

oh geez the window on the right at 15:28
Right off the bat, you can tell this game is polished. How? The continue button is greyed out. Do you know how many TRIPLE-A games don't do that? Yet here is something from Greenlight/Early Access that does it.
good luck to you Jim, on that event your referring too.
That bloke with the shovel made my 10p turn into a 5p.
Jim, just a friendly reminder to check on your state's SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation) laws. Providing this even makes it to trial. A judge may review the suit and decide it's not even worth hearing.
I just googled the recent shenanigans. They're fucking insane.
+Yog Sothoth I did too. Holy shit. Ten million dollars? That's more money than Jim and the Romine Brothers will ever possess... times about ten.
They've probably set that amount so high hoping Jim would settle for a few hundred thousand, like most people do in such cases. Thing is, they got no case so fuck em.
Nor a good lawyer or the resources to obtain one. I mean, have you seen the GoFundMe they put up? That shit was hilarious.
It was amazing. They're such sad little men.
not sure if its just my balancing but i couldnt hear any of the games narration
15:30 - Look at the window to the right
Now, I have confession to make, before the man who was given prophetic powers.
I don't watch these videos about horror games even 1 minute - I just tune in to hear how Jim will greets us in every video :D
Hey Jim. As a heads up this video had an ad for World of Tanks on it. Dunno if you care or not, but figured I'd mention it.
When he's reading the Bible verse, there is shadow by the window on the right
Fun fact about snakes. Pet snakes get depression if you aren't around and refuse to eat, thus deciding to die if you abandon them. In short, a snake that loves you will choose die if you disappear. would enjoy a full play through.
Very pleasurable experience this one. The sound direction I thought was marvelous. The graphics looked good too. Very simple game, but pretty engrossing. My only fear is that the game is almost over.
nice game! thanks for sharing!

I was more scared by the dude with the shovel than I was by the monster.
6:29 You startled the Horde!
I'm glad to see it Wassut, uncovered skin What's your opinion about tiat
I agree, it's worth keeping an eye on.
omg how would it have been if Solid or Big Boss ever said "you just got snaked son"
Catching up on these and enjoyed this one pretty solid
Isn't that the Quake 2 jumping noise?
I beat this game in about 1 hr 19 minutes. It's actually pretty good!
This game could learn a thing or two from taxi tyranny, it could use a built in Manuel.
Am I the only one who found the game similar to Alan Wake? Lighthouse, disappearing wife...
Bright Falls,Shadow Peak...Maybe it IS just me.
Nah, that was my first impression too. For a moment I actually thought it was a much earlier version of that. I mean, the pier when she vanishes?
Man, now you've reminded me we still do t have a proper Alan Wake sequel..
A bit Alan Wake, but gets to the game faster than Wake did.
+TheIntern Yeah, wake had plot and characters too.
+olibigbird Wake also had one of the most cringe-worthy protagonists ever. He reminded me of Brian from Family Guy.
15:30 the shadow in window spooked me
h for holster? :)
We start to see the devs influences maybe
"Doom-Guy jump-sound" is the new Wilhelm Scream?
Jim seems to control his character like he's laying a FPS.
I'm intrigued. Will def keep an eye on this and how it develops.
