I like it. The case is superb and has a stubby shoulder resemblance to a Bremont. It's balanced well and is certainly something I would consider in a larger 40/41 case size. All over brushing is fab.

I bought the 37mm white dial on a leather strap. immediately. I love it. It has the wrist presence of a watch several times more expensive. It looks good on all sort of straps, and the screw-in crown gives me confidence in wet situation. And mine keeps time to within 1-2 seconds a day! My only quibble is that Hamilton only offer medium-length strap. I have an 8-1/4 inch wrist, and the stock strap is too short.

Swiss made + marketing =Whatever you can get people to pay... PS Tissot Heritage with Chronometer ETA movement under £700 from the same retailer. Bit shiny for the field unless you need to use as a mirror to attract a Rescue helicopter after trying to use it as a compass

    • @plektosgaming
      @plektosgaming 9 месяцев назад +3

And.. the dirty secret is that the ETA mechanical movements in this range aren't very accurate. They are actually hopelessly average in terms of mechanical movements, no better than typical consumer junk like from the 70s before the quartz revolution. 21K is a very low beat rate and is unacceptable in a watch over $200. This is Swatch at it again, with cheap movements and huge markups.

Thank you for addressing the bezel especially if I compare to (some) reviewers that got flowned to BC Canada for the reveal and none of them mentioned the bezel that some of them mentionned in the past like for the Seiko Turtoise with the same bezel “a useless complication that nobody will use”

  • @Valera_Scotland

Love this my friend. I'm getting my IWC Mark 16 back, but if I wasn't, I really would consider this beauty (37mm, probably black dial, but white is cool too)...
I love that the crystal is now coated, and there is no huge gap between the strap and case, like on the manual khaki
Also you can use the N,S,W,E markings as a timer, in the same way as 15,30,45
EDIT... ah damn.. the price, and display caseback...hmmm.. maybe I wouldn't get it after all

Nice enough watch, thanks for putting the time into making the film. I really like the bezel and overall look, perfect for me! However, the price? Really? It is so close to the Sandhurst Series 2 from CW, but with the CW you get a better bracelet, adjustable clasp, better water resistance and a COSC certified movement, all for near enough the same monies. Sorry, Hamilton, it would be a CW for me any day of the week!
Keep up the good work though, Russ and keep well :-)

Great review Russ!! I couldn’t help myself and got the 41 on bracelet. Absolutely love it. I hear what you are saying about the price, but to me, it really feels far more substantial than, say, my 38 khaki auto in titanium and that was close to 800 dollars. It won’t get much use but the rotating bezel looks great and adds to the overall package for me. I see it pushing into premium field/pilot watch kind of territory like Sinn, damasko, vertex, Hanhart for a MUCH lower price point than those. Just my two cents. Maybe I’m in the honeymoon period but I rarely wear a watch two days in a row, let alone the last week I have worn it exclusively… cheers!!!

I’m with you on this one Russ. If you’ve bought Hamiltons when they were ok value for money, congrats and keep hold of the em. Now they’ve priced themselves out of the only market that they actually competed in, the sub-£1000 Swiss watch with heritage and decent build quality market. The lume is terrible, the compass bezel is pointless, the movement is basic and can’t really be serviced by anyone other than Swatch, I agree about the display caseback, just isn’t needed, and it’s in a price bracket with others that offer better quality and COSC certified movement (Christopher Ward, ahem!).

    • @fark69

This was a stellar review of this watch. Thanks for calling out the lume, which isn't a surprise from Hamilton. The pricing discussion was needed as well. I do think maybe the Hamilton's had stayed a bit low for too long though. While not as jarring as JLC's price increases (one Polaris I'd looked at earlier this year jumped 25% in one day), it's still a bit shocking. It's definitely not just for our high inflation these last couple years. That being said, the movement is a little better than those lower end models, and the bracelet appears to be better too. I don't think a quick adjust at the 4 figure mark is too much to ask, personally. Hamilton being part of the Swatch group means they should have the resources to create a version of it befitting the price point. I think this has a bit of a neo-vintage/'90s vibe that I like. I was also quite impressed that your wife liked it. Adrian Barker had called one out other thing that was on point, and that is a bit more bracelet taper would have been nice. Still, I think it's not terribly out of place on a tool watch with a smaller taper. I just think it would be all time classic with that and a quick adjust.
When things start getting to that point, I start thinking why not spend a bit more on something like a Sinn 556A RS, Monta Triumph, or Oak & Oscar Olmsted. The last two even have quick adjust bracelets. I was blown away by the Triumph on wrist when I was at Chicago Windup, and it was just a fuzzy blip at the edge of my radar prior to that. Still, I wouldn't blame a soul for buying this new Hamilton.

These brands seem to be focusing a lot on their heritage but leaving out key features like decent lume, upgraded bracelet, etc. Most people have really nice things to say about this Hamilton Watch despite it being over 1K.

I think this watch is a serious upgrade compared to the older ones. I'm glad I held off from buying the others . the fact it has a screw down crown is serious upgrade for me... I also find the new look of this watch is a happy medium does fit into a reliable adventure bit of kit but also u can use it to dress up very smart with it... as for the lume I dnt think people test a watch lume correctly... because u could have amazing lume an give it a 8 out of 10 bt it might fade very fast ... I'd rather have a 6 out of 10 bt it last all night...

Great video. I’m considering one but also feel like I might as well just put the money towards something up-market once we get over $1000. Anyway, I don’t really understand the disdain for compass bezels on tool watches. It’s called the expedition and it’s not a dive watch.. what on earth would you need a dive bezel for and why do people act like you couldn’t also use the compass bezel to track time considering the watch does have a well marked dial. Additionally I hike, ski, and camp in the North American wilderness where it’s not impossible to find yourself in a situation without a charged phone and needing to roughly navigate. Yes, use can navigate with any analog watch if you know how to but this bezel does make it just that much easier and all the shiny stainless steel could potentially help flash someone for rescue. Really I think the major cirque and thing that’s keeping me from having already purchased it is the “meh” ETA movement… on one hand I appreciate an 80hr power reserve but on the other I’m hearing wide ranging accuracies for this movement. But again, this is an expedition watch, not a chronograph… 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think it’s priced for the market… not a bargain but not a rip-off either simply because of the brand legacy. At the end of the day, name matters in watches and as a result companies can leverage that.

Thank you my friend!! What I would say is check the prices of the iconic Khaki king. Then you’ll realise it’s priced way too high for this brand. If this is what’s to come in terms of price correction on field watches, Hamilton could be out of reach for a lot of people in the future. Maybe this is what the brand wants?

I like the watch, but that price is troubling. It looks like they are following Seiko's playbook of increasing the prices, but not making their watches better in return. That said, I do think the watch will sell. And for those who must have this watch, give it time and I suspect you'll be able to find it on the secondary/grey markets at a somewhat better price.

I do like Hamilton. This new model is a winner for sure. I much prefer it to the Alpinist myself. The price however, yeah, bonkers! Then again, it seems to be my take on most new releases these days. Watch prices are getting well out of hand. Excellent review sir!

A fantastic review, Russ, thank you kindly! I must admit, its a nice watch. The design and vibe are right up my alley. I'm afraid the price will hold me back from this one. Once you're over 1000 there are A LOT of really nice options that have superior fit and finish for an equivalent performance/accuracy point... With the price of even the humble Khaki field creeping up, it seems the Seiko Midfield might be the "new" budget friendly field watch...

Well, you *did* say this was meant to compete with the Seiko Alpinist, and *that* lineup's gone into the $1K price range pretty recently, so it shouldn't really be a surprise. I suspect if Hamilton does a collab with Swatch, they'll keep that 10ATM WR and swap out the movement for a quartz, and it should sell for slightly under the price of a MoonSwatch.

    • @fark69

Alpinist over $1k is the GMT model right? That price hike is crazy too, imo. This doesn't offer any extra functionality for $300-400 more

Hamilton Khaki Expedition with a new hat. Never a fan of fauxtina. Unlike others, I prefer a date complication, cleaved the movement from a smooth 4hz to a sticky ticky 3hz. Power reserve is not an issue for me and would prefer the hypnotic sweeping seconds hand. Lame water resistance, again with no AR coating (non listed on the Hamilton
Website in the spec sheet) and a ridiculous price. Will pass on this one too and keep rocking my vintage Hamilton Seabeach III.

Plastic bits only matter to me if it affects reliability and serviceability when it comes to the value end. Honestly it's probably somewhat a plus given the amount of magnetic fields we deal with these days.
Can't imagine swapping the (I think it's just two parts?) plastic bits from the same movement justifies this kind of price increase.

It may (definitely) be overpriced, but what's worse? A couple of hundred on a Hamilton or the 1 or 2 thousand some of the higher end brands have slapped on their watches over the past few years (way above inflation)? I for one am actually tempted, but that clasp will probably make it or break it for me. A smaller clasp and/or taper would have been preferred, especially considering the watch dimensions overall.
    Oh and great review! 👌
