There is nothing wrong with smart watches. It's still a scientific measurement of time. Most of us don't need a watch. I have way too many and wear them more like a personal expression of my mood and personality, like a jewellery. I wear a Samsung watch when I walk my dog because I don't want to check my phone or scratch my dog with a steel watch. Yes I don't mind scratching my watch but not scratching my dog. Watch wearers should stop hating on smart watch wearers.

I know Tissot Prx is mentioned ad nauseam lately but I've actually picked my Ice Blue version 2 days ago.
Got the call from my local boutique and splurged 745 euros. It was my 40th anniversary gift from myself.
I've actually picked it up wearing my Casio a168w on which i was proudly wearing.
Loving the PRX actually, it's a incredible watch. Looks and feels like 5 times the price I've paid. Incredible accurate and such a beauty.

    Good list.
I decided to concentrate on a couple of classics as the mainstay of my collection:
    -A couple of premium square G-shocks (GMW-B5000D and GW-5000)
    -a Seiko Arnie SNJ025
    -and a Citizen NY0040.
    All very enjoyable watches!

Very good list. I also have the GW-5000U-1 and the Seiko Arnie SNJ025 (among many other watches). Arnie could possibly be my all time favorite watch. It just has one downside. It lacks a coundown timer.

    • @plektosgaming
      @plektosgaming 11 месяцев назад +1

@@ryanjofre Agreed. In this segment, it really is a nice small bump up from Seiko (plus different looks/not everyone has one). Mine keeps excellent time and as an actual timepiece, stomps on the rest of the cheaper stuff. 2-3 seconds a day isn't "accurate" for a quartz watch, but a lot of the cheaper ones are just off by a couple of minutes after several months. This.. about a second a week, at most. Not Rolex, but what is... I just checked mine - 4 seconds fast after 3 months. That I can live with. :) Of note, previous ones were a second or so a week, this quartz one is a little better/newer and seems to basically need to be reset every few months. And, yes, the quartz are more accurate than the automatics if keeping accurate time on a budget is a thing.

Great video as usual. I really appreciate how you quickly explained what the term horology really, really means. It simply just doesn't come down only to wrist worn clocks, aka watches. No matter how some people use that term when bragging about expensive luxury watches. Great list, I personally might've switch the Casio Calculator to the Casio Royale, but that's just me.

  • @LeShark75

I remember watch snobbery being out into perspective when I was 18 years old, around 30 years ago. We had a manager at work who walked around wearing a gold Rolex shoving it under the nose of anyone wearing a watch... I used to wear my AE90W (I think it was) and over he came with the Rolex backed up with a comment like "If you work hard enough, you might own one of these one day!". Little did he know that at that time I'd been helping his wife out with a small hemorrhoid issue she was having for about three months prior to him being appointed as my manager. It always stuck with me that Watch snobs, or snobs in general, who think they have it all need to stop once in a while and double check who's rodding the soil stack whilst they're being dicks..... Jesus, she'd be 65 now Lol.

Fantastic video MWC, as always! Life is far too short to snobbery, and (more importantly) letting someone else's snobbery bring you down. For the most part, no one cares what watch you wear, so wear what you want and as you said, "like what you love." At one point my whole small collection of watches was Casio/G-Shock, but I've since added other military or military inspired watches into my 5 piece collection. Its what works for me. But if that's not the case for others, great! The only advice I like to give people is don't have a smart watch as your only watch. Slow down and enjoy the simplicity of time without notifications. Even if only from time to time =)

When I think about it, I have had quite a few watches so I must be a watch fan. Three Seikos, one Sekonda (I was a kid), one Mondaine, one Wenger (expensive rubbish), one Timberland fashion watch (fantastic value and did the job as a daily beater for years), one Oris Big Crown (gave it to my son), one Tag Heuer (very much of its time - the 1980s) and a Baum et Mercier for the evening (although I need glasses to read the dial after sunset..). The new daily beater is a Seiko SKX and honestly, it looks great and does the job. Even though it is a daily, I still take it off sometimes to avoid unnecessary damage. Maybe I need a Casio when angle grinding...

I'm a huge fan of watches. If I had the disposable income I'd have everything from a 10 quid F91 to a Grand Seiko. Incidentally, speaking of 80s memorabilia (Knight rider) no-one ever talks about Doc Emmett Brown's watches in back to the future. He wears one on each wrist in both the 80s and 50s scenes and they're dead cool.

The 60th anniversary version is gorgeous. I had a radio watch at school, got a fresh coloured ear piece, told the teachers it was a hearing aid, got away with listening to capital radio during class. I think I got it from Argos.

The $22 Casio A168 has the top notch EL illumination, and in chromed resin with a steel band, it'll do for dressy occasions, if all your pricier watches look like sports chonkers. On the black plastic side, I think the W800 manages to feel higher-quality than similarly priced Casio models, more solid than anything short of a G-Shock. Just a few thoughts.

My collection of five pieces is rather humble compared to many. Only collecting a few years now, I have encountered the watch snobbery as I am one to strike up conversation with other fellows I see wearing watches. All of mine have come from pawn shops, and I did the math yesterday and found I'm only in $640, one SEIKO, two CITIZEN, one BULOVA and a trusty $50 TIMEX. The CITIZEN radio- controlled consistently reads the same as my smart phone, as it should. The other eco-drive is a titanium body and strap and is also surprisingly accurate. The BULOVA, which is most recent purchase, an ACCUTRON Snorkel II cost me $75, and after battery and sizing I'm only into for about $115. The jeweler told me I did quite well. So far it's not lost any time. The SEIKO 5 automatic is a green, military looking knock off of the HAMILTON, I've added a nice leather strap to it which makes it worth about $180, but looks far more valuable. This brings me to the humble TIMEX. I set this watch a few years ago and it doesn't seem to have lost 50 seconds. I removed its strap and mounted it to the handlebars of my commuter bike for winter riding. This way I don't need to mess with mittens and long parka sleeves to check the time. I always look appropriate for whatever occasion.

The Bulova prototype that Commander David Scott wore during Apollo 15 was a failed attempt by Bulova to win the NASA contract that ended up going to Omega, and so was built to the same NASA specifications that the Speedmaster Professional was. It was gifted to Scott by Bulova, probably hoping exactly what happened did. So the fact that it ended up on the moon and already looked like a Speedmaster does actually make sense.

I've worn watches from designer watches when I was a kid to Swatches in High School to Swiss Army watches in College to Casio G-Shock in my early employment years to Cartier Tank to a Seiko phase to a Rolex Submariner from my dad (Love you Dad🙏❤️☝️) to finally an Orient Green Kamasu... In the end what I realized is to just don't mind other people, respect each other's choices in watches and just enjoy the hell out of them since Life is too short...🤙 Thanks for this video as I enjoyed it really👊 I appreciate your way of doingnvidz about watches🙏 Just Suscribed😊

Hey Russ, great video! I know you were mostly looking at a lower price point- but I also feel that certain independent brands/large microbrands get a decent amount of respect these days- and although not cheap- offer a nice alternative to the more high end luxury watches for much less. Some that come to mind for me are Oris, Christopher Ward, Sinn, Monta, Damasko, Doxa, Squale, Zodiac...

I must take issue Russ. I believe originally watch snobs call it the “quartz crisis” although most people called it the “quartz revolution” but now crisis seems the usual terminology used by watch enthusiasts. Also a watch snub might look down someone wearing a dive watch with a tux, it’s just not done old man 😂

@@markymarknj certainly the quartz revolution almost put Swiss watchmakers out of business but most would say that it was a revolution or evolution of watchmaking in general. Swiss watchmakers generally now make jewellery that also tells the time.

Great show Sir 👍 Hamilton? Look great but fog up. A field watch without a screw down crown, jings!!! It’s like a Panerai that can’t go under a tap!!! (You know the one) Love the Kitt watch, I notice you even have the 80’s hair 🤣

I lost the count of how many Casio I have, but if I had to choose one with a peculiar design, and it's not a square, I'll say a Casio GW-056 (it was worn in Avatar I, just for reference), a brilliant work for me! It was the thinnest G, but they dropped the project, a pity if I can say it.
Then, moving to Bulova, why not the Accutron too? Who cannot love a diapason watch? 😍
The rest of the selection is brilliant for sure. 😊
Oh, wait, the knight rider watch didn't have the FM radio, noooooo! 😮‍💨

Mind you, in the 1970s, a Seiko quartz cost the same as 12 Rolexes. Quartz was super high end new technology that made the time telling accuracy of mechanicals silly. It was not until the late 70s, early 80s that quartz democratised watch prices. But then you also need to remember that Timex and brands like it had been selling 1 dollar watches with a pen-anchor movement since the late 40s. It seems the Swiss carnage was.... well, bad business acumen. :)
That all said: Lovely video. Punch and a scrap... I love it. But isn't it Buh-LOH-vuh? Instead of BOO-luvvuh?
