In these Retrospectives i try so hard to articulate what these games meant to us... and funny thing is, after spending so much time thinking, writing, and editing a Retrospective you'd think I'd grow tired of it... but i always find an even greater appreciation for the game. I'm a History teacher and I really enjoy digging into the stories behind these games, so I've decided to focus on Retrospective/mini-doc type videos for a while. The content won't be as frequent, but hopefully it'll be good. As always, if you like this video, do me a favor, and Share it with others... its a free way to really help my channel. Thank you for watching! -Complex

NESComplex we thank you sir. It is incredible to see people like you (and Riff etc) preserving the nostalgia of the games we all loved and cherished growing up.
I’m a father of 4 boys. We OCCASIONALLY play sports together and do outdoor trips...my fondest memories sometimes is just sitting down and playing Mega Man X with them and seeing the same glow in their eyes as I had.
      Keep it up my man!

I for one, support this approach. I'll take a monthly or quarterly Complex video over the daily and weekly content I see out there. With your videos, I learn a great deal about the games I grew up with. This is a fantastic approach to telling the history and keeping the story alive. Keep it up sir, we all appreciate it!

hey what about the flashing shell? It wasn't mentioned, but if you have a koopa enter a yellow shell, and you have a yoshi eat it, it'll gain every ability on the shells. Yoshi will be able to fly, stomp, and once you release the shell from your mouth, he'll breathe fire.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that it has ever been perfect (though some of the “Bad Qualities” are either just nitpicks or don’t count as cons, heck, some of the “BQs” of the game according to Miraheze Wiki might even be pros for the game such as #9) but the reasons why it rocks (big time) are what make it an understatement to be considered great, back in the 1990s and in the early 21st Century!

My cartridge from the early 90s has all three save files completed with all 96 goals found. And yet I still periodically erase one and do it all over again. Even with it not being a serious challenge anymore, even after doing 100% completion who knows how many times, it's still damn fun to do it all over again. A perfect balance of difficulty and joy. There are few games that I have that relationship with, of endless replay value.

      *Super Mario World score*
      Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
      Gameplay: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
(Charming) characters: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (In the GBA version though, I’d take a few stars off because the only character in the game because I didn’t like Princess Peach as much as people who don’t see why Luigi and Yoshi are some of the true best characters of the franchise because while in the SNES version she was a character that didn’t interest most of us because she was a character who needed rescuing, they made things much less better in the GBA version because it’s the first game where Jen Taylor voices Princess Peach to say “Help!”. It just makes Sam Kelly’s performance as Princess Peach an improvement, albeit meh at most).

I watched this entire video with a smile on my face, loving every minute of it and got a little emotional at the end. These earlier Mario games are the only ones that do that to me. Just by looking at these characters, scenarios, listening to the music, all of it just brings me back to a time when everything was easy, fun and full of love. Living with my grandparents, playing it with my friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, the entire family would get together to play and watch each other play. Now life has taken its course and those gatherings are just memories. Treasured memories. Thank you Mario, for being such an important part of my life.

    • @TheYorkMan
      @TheYorkMan 5 лет назад +5

      Really?
There are 2 basic themes for pretty much every level, with added percussion when riding Yoshi, One theme for 70% of the overworld, with some repetitive jingles for Vanilla Dome, Forest of Illusion and The Valley of Bowser...
      You have access to RUclips...
Look up the SNES soundtracks for Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy VI, Castlevania IV, Chrono Trigger, Mr. Nutz... To name a few.....
And then look beyond the SNES, and find the music used in games in the 80's arcade games (Bubble Bobble, Outrun... to name just two), and then the Playstation, Saturn, Dreamcast, Neo Geo.... and every console (and on the PC since 1990).....
Jesus, literally thousands of games with better music than SMW!!!!!!

Unfortunately Mario titles never seem to edge out BEST GAME EVER or Best game on systems, because they are the first, and therefore test subjects. But it's important to note that because of Mario, we have other great games. Super Metroid and Zelda:LTTP wouldn't exist or have had the funding to be developed in depth without the groundwork laid down by Mario games.
I think the system where Mario games shine out above all others in flagship titles is the N64.

Mario games will never edge out any game as the best of the year. Mario games are catered towards the younger crowd. It’s made to not get too frustrated or overly long when playing. Not to say us adults can’t enjoy them too. The only game I can think of that might have a chance to win GotY was Super Mario 64. That was such an achievement of technology and gameplay that I don’t think can be duplicated again. The jump from 2D movement into a 3D atmosphere was such a game changer. It literally shift how we play many games today.

New features are added using a custom tool called Lunar Magic. The difficulty has been ramped up. With over 100 new titles, you couldn't finish all the content unless you devoted your like to it *cough Dode cough*. These games are often referred to as Kaizos. Which is Japanese for rearranged. Check out these titles:
    Super Dram World
    Grand Poo World

    Kaizo Mario World
If you would like to see some of the best content for this game you can search for Dode Kaizothon - watch him curate the available titles for download, verify the games are beatable, rate them in difficulty, and interact with his viewers on twitch.tv. His videos are also available on RUclips.
