When the snes first came out, my dad took me to a electronics shop where they had a display snes up and running. F-Zero was playing. My dad got me to try it 'i was only 7 or 8' and he was laughing and joking saying "oh you can't do it, shall we not get it" 😄 He didn't buy it while we was there, but a couple of weeks later it was Christmas day and it took pride of place under the tree as the main present for me and my brother. Happy memories ☺ My dad loved to play too! He would stop up late playing on the likes of Chrono trigger, Secret of Mana and Zelda. I think we played 80% of what games there ever was.
@@NESComplex My dad wasn't into all the SNES games, but he used to spend ages playing Lethal Enforcers with the pink and blue light guns with me. I really treasure those childhood memories, especially since we lost him to cancer just couple of years after that.
This game was so much more than a "tech demo". If fact it's probably my favorite racing game on the system. It gets brutal with the Master difficulty but you have to beat it to see the true ending. I love that sound of early SNES games which all use that same drum sample and bassline for the tracks. My favorite tracks in the game are probably Big Blue and Port Town. I never knew Mute was an abbreviation for Mutant but it makes sense. I also really like the old comic book version of Captain Falcon. He looks more like a futuristic racer where as his current form makes him look more like a super hero. It's sad to see that the F-Zero series has been dormant for quite some time but hopefully Nintendo brings it back someday.
I agree! It’s definitely not a tech demo. Port Town is also one of my favorites. And I think Nintendo will resurrect the series one day. Hopefully the Switch gets a new one. Racers are sorely lacking on Switch

I mastered the original F-Zero as well as X and GX for years. My favorite racing game ever, and I can play it anyday. Looking back, the first game was a total revolution; fastest supersonic racing game then and 1st futuristic, SNES launch title, and had such intense gameplay and wonderful music and this is coming from a powerful home console in 1990! I bet this game had many people dropping their jaws when it was new. I'm glad I'm not the only person who noticed the Silence track looked like a 9mm pistol! Nowadays, we need a new F-Zero, but it's so unlikely, considering flatscreen and input lag ruining reaction times.
i remember reading a review in a magazine (this was before the age of the internet) about f-zero x for the n64 and the reviewer gave it a low score all because it lacked weapons. this annoyed me because it almost seemed like they were comparing play style to mario kart and totally missed the point on what f-zero x was all about.
@@kumatorahaltmanndreemurr Wonder if that review came before or after WipEout 2097's release on the PS1. If it's the latter, that might explain the complaint.

I really love your attention to detail with the music. Most of us definitely fell in love w/ SNES soundtracks, but also didn't get to fully appreciate them until several years later. Like you said, it is much more beneficial w/ a headset on. You get to hear every single note being played. So much respect for the composers of that era!

I grew up playing F-Zero GX but over the past 7 years I’d say I’ve played every game (except for Climax, AX, or other official Japan only games) and this honestly teared me up a bit. It’s so great knowing more about the franchise I loved ever since I was a toddler and why it became such a success in the 90s. To this day I still pray every Nintendo Direct or E3 to just see at least a teaser for a new entry in the series. You’re such a great content creator and I wish you the best!
I still believe we will get a follow up in the series, but each year that passes I begin to doubt. The Switch could use another solid racer in its line up.
NESComplex I hope so F-Zero has been one of my favorite series of all time it hurts me to see it so neglected nowadays. Hoping if anything Shin’en makes the next game.
I love Big Blue too! but how about some love for Sand Ocean, Port Town, or Red Canyon. There are SO many great tracks in this game and they always get overshadowed by Mute City or Big Blue.
Your retrospectives are really special. Something I can't find anywhere else is really putting me in that place and time, for either the NES or the SNES, they were before my time, so even with retro gaming as a passion, it's not for nostalgia for everything, but appreciation for what's come before I guess, so getting a sense for what it was really like to experience something like F-Zero and why it was so special isn't something I'd have really felt, even if I kinda understood it from an outsider point of view. You give a perfect sense of scope and perspective, and it doesn't go unappreciated, great work!
Absolutely stellar effort with this video. F-Zero is without a doubt a classic and so are the other entries. Been playing this game off and on since it released and it'll always have a special place in my heart for everything that it is and what it achieved. Great video, thanks!
@@Jolly-Green-Steve I don't think this is entirely true. Nintendo is one of the very few companies that still gives chances to franchises that don't sell very well for the sake of innovation, quality and fun. This isn't always the case, but even then we have to remember that companies exist to make a profit. So with that in mind, we customers are partly responsible for many good franchises dying out. Sad but true. On the other hand, Big N is very stubborn sometimes and don't seem to hear its fans out for what they really want. They often make games when and the way the feel like doing them.
@@Jolly-Green-Steve F-Zero GX is my favorite racing game of all time. It is very rare for me to like a game that is so frustratingly difficult, but the game is overall so well done that I kept trying until I've mastered it. I know Nintendo will make a new F-Zero someday, I just wish it happens soon. I agree that GX deserved to sell much better. As you said the game isn't very friendly towards casual (and even most hardcore) gamers, so it problably helped to make many stay away from it.
I'm new to this channel, this is my first video ever on it and you tuched my heart. I'm a very longtime F-Zero fan, I played the original on SNES til' my controllers were broken, I played F-Zero X for years including beating all the staff ghost, and I did the same with F-Zero GX which I consider the very best racing game of the entire generation. I even bought the two GBA F-Zero ones and played them to death, my Smash Bros main is Captain Falcon and for years I had a Captain Falcon poster on my room. So many memories, and now, 17 years without F-Zero. It's sad, this franchise need a serious return. I'm sure I'm not the only one who loves it. Thank you for the video and keep the good work.
The franchise has definitely been gaming gold EVERY time... I think it would take a total outcry from fans before they responded with a new entry in the series. I know a Switch version would be huge!!
wow, i have never seen a retro game review that not only highlights the quality of the music, but also explains both how and why the music works so well! kudos, i'll be watching all of your retrospectives from here on out!
I’m pretty sure this is my favorite racing game of all time. By no means is it the only racing game I ever owned, but I can’t think of any racing game that I logged more hours into.
Awesome retrospective, currently playing this on my 3DS. It's very much a game of its time and I mean that in the best possible way. The music is top-notch.
I’d honestly love to see an F-Zero Collection someday soon to rejuvenate interest in this franchise, especially considering just how long it’s been since the last game; I’m more than certain the Nintendo Switch can handle a compilation of SNES/ N64/ NGC/ GBA titles under one game cartridge.
I cannot be overstated, music is SO IMPORTANT to a game. Can make you feel part of the experience or completely through you off. Thanks for bringing that out! Another great video! Thanks for your time and labour for such great content.
@@NESComplex I don't get how they didn't even make a remake/remaster of X (on 3DS f.e.) or GX (WiiU or Switch). oO I know those sold less and less, but this franchise and it's fans deserve at least one more game, a last chance so to say.

Haven't play this game since I was a teenager. I think I need to revisit it. These retrospectives are your thing Chris. Unique, nostalgic and informative.
Excellent video! I didn't know anything about the history of this game. But when the SNES was brand new, a cousin of mine owned an SNES and this game, and we played the heck out of it, constantly trying to beat each course faster and faster, excitingly figuring out ways to save a fraction of a second here and there. Good times! It really was a revolutionary game.
Fire Field best total and lap time, White Lands 1 & 2 best total and lap time, and for the life of me cannot remember the 7th off the top of my head. All records can be found on Twin Galaxies. I still have a SNES and the game cartridge with the times on it. who knows someone may have kicked my ass since then...was a long time ago. i am not a pro, i just really enjoyed the game to the extreme.
thanks i appreciate it. i find there are tons of people out there that have world records like me. they just dont know it. i didnt know it. until discovering Twin Galaxies and browsing the records. i pulled out my old cartridges and powered it up and was like "mine is better than that", but then of course you have to practice and "do it for the camera" to submit it. but yea. im sure everyone has that one game that they played to perfection and dont know that what they saved on it may be the best anyone has done on that game.
Ahh yes, F-Zero, I didn't have this one myself growing up but one of my friends did and he would bring it over quite frequently. I actually got pretty good at it then but when I got the SNES mini and sat down to play it I discovered my reaction time now isn't what it used to be back then, don't get my wrong I still play the daylights out of it, there's just a bit more cussing now when I do play it.
It's criminal that a new F-Zero doesn't exist. Nintendo owes this game. Thanks for the video.

Yes yes yes! Big Blue for the win!
Love that song!!!
Love it! You are no biginner that's for sure 😎
Oh hey ;)
A winner is you!
Haha. I only show good footage dude!
You're winner
Absolutely stellar effort with this video. F-Zero is without a doubt a classic and so are the other entries. Been playing this game off and on since it released and it'll always have a special place in my heart for everything that it is and what it achieved. Great video, thanks!
This video goes to the "Nintendo should see this" list. Maybe then they remember what a wonderful series they created and decide to ressurect it.
They would need a Super Nintendo 2 and a mode 7.1 to pull it off.
Man, you just took every single word out of my mouth, are you a mind-reader?
The franchise has definitely been gaming gold EVERY time... I think it would take a total outcry from fans before they responded with a new entry in the series. I know a Switch version would be huge!!
Whoa, dude. I dont recall subscribing but I'm glad I did! Awesome, high quality content! Thank you. Good stuff....
Thank you! That original sketched comic is freaking gorgeous, but even the one in the booklet is pretty awesome!
wow, i have never seen a retro game review that not only highlights the quality of the music, but also explains both how and why the music works so well! kudos, i'll be watching all of your retrospectives from here on out!
Thank you Jonny! I hope you enjoy the channel. I’m not sure why some videos don’t get views. I put the same effort into everything. Anyway. Thank you!
You kinda got one, 99 is awesome
I cannot be overstated, music is SO IMPORTANT to a game. Can make you feel part of the experience or completely through you off. Thanks for bringing that out! Another great video! Thanks for your time and labour for such great content.
It’s so true. Music can change the entire feeling of an environment
backgrounds were crazy.
i used to imagine what life would be like in all of those futuristic cities and barren landscapes🎨
This title STILL plays amazingly and seamlessly
Who's watching in 2560?
Excelent video! The tecnic research, the editing, the sensibility and feeling... so much nostalgia! Thank you Nescomplex and Retroforce!
I always hated those pink blinkers that exploded on you.
Agree
I always liked running into them. :3
Top-notch as always man. I agree we do need more F-Zero can't believe it's been almost 17 years since the last one.
17! That’s nuts. I don’t know how they’ve ignored it so long. A new one would be amazing! Switch style
@@NESComplex I don't get how they didn't even make a remake/remaster of X (on 3DS f.e.) or GX (WiiU or Switch). oO I know those sold less and less, but this franchise and it's fans deserve at least one more game, a last chance so to say.
I got good at F ZERO. Back when it first came out . There was no other game like it , had you literally leaning into the turn with tongue firmly sticking out between your lips, so focused on the game . Lol. I loved that game .
Thank you so much, totally reminded me of all the nostalgia I have for this game, fantastic watch as well. Appreciate you, keep up the fantastic amazing work you do 🤝
Excellent job! Wonderful watch!
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed it!
Your videos are among the very best I have ever seen. Informative, visually appealing and your calm voice is relaxing. Keep up the awesome work!
NESComplex > Gaming Historian - and this was the best retrospective yet! I literally learned 36 things I didn't know and I'm diehard fan. Excellent, excellent work. Wow.
Hard Disagree. GH properly cites sources, whereas NESComplex does not cite correctly.
Great video man love your work. You did a great job at describing the music especially. I always thought the music sounded very Superhero-esque like those classic 80s themes in Japan and America
Maybe the super hero inspiration was in the music too. Hmmm.
This review is so good! Its like a documentary
Thank you Nik. I’m actually a history teacher so that’s what I was aiming for. Woo hoo!
it IS a documentary!
One of the best Ive seen
NESComplex absolutely fantastic. More please! 👏🏻 and selfishness more early SNES games 😄
Wow that was amazing! You put so much love into these. your passion for video games Radiates thanks nescomplex I had to hold back the tears when you got into the music of the game.
When i first play this game and my jet exploded, i literally jumped and screamed really loud
Hello buddy, i'm 30 years old and i played F-Zero for the first time in 2019 when I found my old Super Nintendo somebody gave me as a child. I went to a classic game store and picked up F-Zero since it was cheap. It is really cool and so is this video, thanks.
The micromachines game was highly underrated.
It was quite popular on the MS:DOS systems.
It was ported to pretty much every system. But I believe the NES ones are somewhat rare.
Excellent video of a game I loved as a kid. I remember racing my best friend for best track time. Countless hours of enjoyment. To put it in perspective. I remember watching O.J. in the Bronco then playing F-Zero 🤣. Time flies keep up the good work.
You’re kinda like this game NESComplex. Edgy, unpredictable, yet...undeniably cool. That sniffle made me laugh 2:27. Also, do more videos with ArcadeImpossible. You two are great together.
Haven't play this game since I was a teenager. I think I need to revisit it. These retrospectives are your thing Chris. Unique, nostalgic and informative.
Dave!!!!! You da man! Thank you for the kind words!
Well, this game got a remake in the form of a battle royale. And it's awesome.
If you really wanna experience what it was like to play F-Zero as a kid, get an emulator, an old style controller and toggle the games speed to 1.5x.
Nah, just play an original copy with a CRT TV.
Such a well put together and edited video. This may be your best yet.
this game was my life, including 7 world records
Cool, when and where man
Crap! You’re a legit pro! Which records do you hold?
Fire Field best total and lap time, White Lands 1 & 2 best total and lap time, and for the life of me cannot remember the 7th off the top of my head. All records can be found on Twin Galaxies. I still have a SNES and the game cartridge with the times on it. who knows someone may have kicked my ass since then...was a long time ago. i am not a pro, i just really enjoyed the game to the extreme.
@@siriusghosttv Yo that's actually lit and epic
thanks i appreciate it. i find there are tons of people out there that have world records like me. they just dont know it. i didnt know it. until discovering Twin Galaxies and browsing the records. i pulled out my old cartridges and powered it up and was like "mine is better than that", but then of course you have to practice and "do it for the camera" to submit it. but yea. im sure everyone has that one game that they played to perfection and dont know that what they saved on it may be the best anyone has done on that game.
That's it! I'm playing it when I get home from work. You got me pumped up!
It might not be your reaction time, but rather latency from the emulation or TV or both combined.
I was definitely rusty when I captured the footage. It took me forever to beat Fire Field.
What a video! Your skills with editing and narration is on the top man! And of course - what a game! All the best from Sweden!
The biggest reason I was jealous of snes kids.
Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels, great video!
The 4 people who thumbed down should be put in RUclips prison
I’ve never thumbed down a video in my life. If I don’t like it... I stop watching 🤷🏻♂️
They just couldn't make the first lap.
You have a wonderful gift for presentation. I've binged five episodes while working. They make for great background noise.
This game ruined all other racing games for me. Nothing compares. "Wipeout" came closest, but it didn't capture the magic F-Zero. Too floaty.
bro, wipeout sucks when you put him in front of the great F-Zero
Fzero X was the best of the 3
So happy you mentioned the music. I sometimes play this awesome game just for the music. Really takes me back to my childhood
