Headlight bulb replacement on a 2nd gen 2005 Honda CR-V EX. This DIY applies to both high and low beam bulbs as they are the same. Note: 2002-2004 CR-V models DO NOT use the same bulb type. Thanks for watching and good luck on your next project.

Thank God. A video made 13 years ago saved my butt.
Thankfully I am a 67 year old woman with small hands! Hardest part was replacing the clip and the boot and dealing with the 30 degree temps and snow! Great video. I watched it twice as my entire bulb shattered and the orientation of the bulb in the fixture was not evident as it came out in pieces. Saved me a fortune. Bulb was $5.85 at NAPA. Came out with 2 few nicks and a cut finger due the glass fragments I was stupid enough to try and remove with out gloves. I have your site bookmarked!
lully lol u me jjj
ku😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Done! This non-automotive female watched your video and replaced the low beam on my 2006 CRV in @ 20 minutes. Thanks for much for this how-to.
You are the B-E-S-T!!!! In the autozone where I bought the bulb, they were not able to change it. But I did it! Thanks to your video and directions. I am very proud of myself. Today is my 60th birthday ;)
Your advice was invaluable! Saved me the trouble of getting the wrong type bulb (has happened before). And the step-by-step removal instructions played out in real life for me. Remembering the bulb holder alignment for example, as well as pressing in on clamp and sliding down. All of it was so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make this practical DIY video.
still useful. Tricky about that clip, but finally got it all back together. Then discovered it was the wrong headlight :/ but did the second one in five minutes, thanks to your vid.
Note: I did find a screwdriver necessary for getting the boot off -- especially on the passenger side, which had more stuff in the way
Thanks...I just changed my low beam driver side bulb on my 2005 Honda CRV and it literally took two minutes. It was even easier (thankfully) than what you had to do in your video. The retaining clip easily unclipped and clipped back into place without and "hell" ;D. I was concerned about this part of the job. Now my lights work great. Thanks for the video...you saved me $50.00 what the dealership was going to charge me and a 3 hours wait. You have a nice patient demeanor and were easy to learn from. Take care from Sunny Southern California and Aloha!
Changing the bulbs on a 2008, which are all in one, but work the same way. I thought I was going to have to remove stuff to get room to get the bulb out on the driver side. That's until I saw your video. Thanks man, you saved the day. Super easy, took all of 5 minutes to replace both sides. Note: the rubber boot center pushes in flat, which makes it easy to get into the small area on driver side, then pops back when in place. Thanks again for making my life a little easier.
Great vid! One thing I would like to add for people watching is to wear gloves and don't touch the glass part of the bulb, the oil from your hands heats up when the bulb is on causing premature failure.
Thanks Dave, I got really stuck on this little job on my 2005 CRV here in the UK. I just couldn't work out how to manipulate the retaining clip - and your great video clip saved me!
Thank you so much for your excellent video. I was able to change the headlight bulb all by my self in just a few minutes. This again. Sandy C - 71 yr old, non mechanic grandma.
Was able to change the bulb after watching your video. Worked exactly as you depicted. Like other people, hardest part was releasing the metal clip. Even cut the tip of my index finger in trying to unhook it. Recommend wearing gloves or some protective wrap like band-aids to prevent cuts as tip of clip can be sharp. Once clip was unhooked, it was a snap to finish the job. And he best part is that it only cost 5.95 for the bulb at Walmart. Thanks for saving me money and time Dave!
New bulb: $7.50
RUclips Vid: 12 minutes
First attempt at car maintance going smoothly: Priceless
Thanks!
Thanks Dave! Your video really made changing the bulbs easy. A couple things I might add in are using dielectric grease on all the connections and to remove the passenger high beam connector plug to provide a bit more room while changing the low beam bulb.
Thanks for the excellent video. 12 min towatch & 3 to change the bulb! But the info was invaluable.I never would have figured out the clip & would have been afraid to pull on the boot too hard. Armed with your advice it was a cinch! Thanks again!
Thank you You just saved me about an hour of floundering around trying to change the bulb Much appreciated
Thank you for this video. I changed it the first time in the auto zone parking lot in the dark and damn near broke that winged adapter because I didn't know about the retaining clip. I just changed my driver's side in 5 minutes thanks to you. You're the man.
Thanks Dave. this was very helpful. I got my CRV about a year ago; this was my first time having to change a light.
Dave- thought I had bought the wrong lightbulb (H1) based on other DIYs vids. Found yours and breathed relief as to how the H1 bulb works in the carrier assembly.
Have a good one!
Awesome I was able to change the bulb successfully great video. My high beam still not working 😢but hey changing the bulb was very easy after watching this video
Thanks Dave. I could replace my CR-V's headlight in less than 10 min's after watching your video instructions.
Super easy thing to change, but couldn't have done it without watching your video first. Thanks for putting this out on RUclips!
- the average DIY female
Thank you!! I spent about an hour trying to figure this out. Finally found your video. Got it done. The second took about 2 mins. Thanks again!
Thanks for sharing your video. It's been a while since I had to replace a bulb on our 2005 Honda CRV. I forgot how much fun it is to deal with the retaining clip! LOL! You have to be like Harry Houdini to get your hand shoved in behind the bulb! LOL!
Awesome instructional video. You just saved me about $10.00 in labor fee for the dealership was going to charge to this. Thanks Again!
Thank you SOOO much! Only thing I found difficult was removing the clip. If you shine a light inside it is possible to see the clip, which helped me get it out. The triangle tab was at the top and then I pushed in as instructed on the video and after some fidgeting it came loose.
Thanks! This was helpful. That retaining clip was such a pain.
Got the Identical 05 CR-V except I got mine in Silver moss which is that green color. My front left light burned out after 6 years thanks so much the video definitely helped to replace my bulb
Thank you so much. I was able to change both bulbs from just watching the first 4.5 minutes.
Thankyou for your video its very easy to understand and actually replace the headlight was a cinch . I always forget how to move the clip between headlight replacements so I just come back to your DIY and wa la bulb is changed. I think there is something very wrong with the CRV as we are always having to replace these bulbs . ugh
Whoever "engineered" that clip needs fired! First time I had to change one, after 30-45 minutes of frustration, I threw all the parts across the yard!
hahaha, that's what I'm afraid of, maybe I'll get my Son in Law to do it for me
I just had to come here to find out which direction the clip when back on. I almost threw all my parts all over my yard. ;)
@@drdysl3xia795 I DID get my son in law to do it for me...thank god, there is no way I would have figured it out and it would have gotten ugly
@@djf750 It started to get ugly. I got 4 text messages when I was trying to do that clip. I had to take my phone in the house before I broke it. Tell your Son In Law thanks for helping you.
@@drdysl3xia795 oh I did, and later texted my daughter to thank him again
He's really good at that kind of thing but even he had to watch the video and he even unbolted part of the front to get his hand in there better and it took him a few tries
Thank you so much for this video. I was able to change my own headlight bulb. This saved me at least $15-$30 in labor charges. ^_^
It's pretty tight on the passenger side. Wiggle the rubber tabs side to side instead of just pulling. Like someone's tip below, place a rag underneath in case the bulb /housing falls.
It helps to take a picture of the clips w/ your phone as someone said below. Too unhook: push clip in then away from the center of the vehicle. It helped that someone held the bulb while I tried to clip it back. Thanks for the video
Thank you Dave! You managed to show details on the retaining clip. That is helpful. Will changed mine as soon as I get them in the mail.
Thanks a lot! I am so glad I did it myself. I have a '05 Civic hatchback and everything is exactly as in the video except that there is an AC line running above the lights so access was even more limited. Also that retaining clip took me 10 minutes to put it back but now I am good to go! (:
Awesome instructional Video!!! You just saved me about $10.00 labor dealership fee. Thanks Again!!!
Good to hear all went well with it. That clip was tricky, but it does force you to work by feel and not by sight.
No wonder my stupid bulb wasn’t coming out. I didn’t know there was a retaining clip. Looks annoying to deal with without removing the whole headlight but I’m too lazy to remove the bumper and all that. Thanks for vid bro
Thanks to all for visiting my page. Happy to help with my limited experience. ;)
WELL DONE BIG DAVE! I couldn't figure out that it was a boot there. Great help!
Merci Monsieur Dave......Awesome video. Conquered the seemingly impossible task......Night vision improved 110 %. Saved enuf for a bottle of wine for two and a lighted and flamed dessert....:) Thank You!
Thank you much for showing this video. Very informative & even told me what bulb to buy. Now i have an idea how to do mine. Please don't take this video out. There still a lot of this car model running around. Thank you again.
This video saved me a lot of time and money. Thank you! I've seen this video posted by others, not sure if they stole it from you, or what happened, but wanted to let you know.
You need to add a warning to place a towel below the headlight socket in case you drop the lamp and adapter like I did. It fell somewhere that I cannot see it and its probably still rattling around in the engine compartment. I just ordered an adapter from Amazon that I hope will work.
Thanks, Dave - was abl;e to change my '05 CR-V low beam in five minutes - and my mechanic buddy got to eat his supper in peace!
Dave, I'd like to add my thanks as well--everything went smoothly on my 2006 CRV (well, except putting the %$# retaining ring back in place after I put the new bulb in). You provided a great video, much appreciated,
Andrew
Thanks, Dave! I thought I remembered how to do this, and because of your helpful video, I found that I did! $10 and 5 minutes later, all was well.
Thanks, Dave. Easy to follow video and sure made this little task simple. Done in less than 15 minutes. I will come back to this site as needed. Again, thanks.
Great video, I have two suggestions. First take a small towel and stuff it below the rubber boot so that if the bulb unit slips out of your hand as you it take it out or push it in, it won't descend into the fender. The second is to take your smart phone and take a picture of the back of the bulb after the rubber boot is off. Then you can see how the clip is hooked up on the top of the head lamp.
Good idea, I've not gotten the clip off after my 1st try. Here getting more advice because the camera can't show it.
I'd like to add my thanks as well. Once you see how someone else does it, it turned out to be a lot easier than I thought. 2003 Honda CR-V
Great video. I have a 2006 ridgeline but couldn't find a video for it. This was perfect. My clamp opens from left to right but everything else was the same even the rubber boot. Thanks for uploading!
Thanks so much. Just changed the headlight a few minutes ago on a 2009 Honda CR-V same concept. Keep up the good work.
very useful, I was removing all the headlight to change the bulb , thanks for the video
Thank you, Thank you , Thank you...... I am "mechanically challenged" and this worked perfect..... explained and showed in very easy to understand directions.... makes me think I can handle more challenging projects.... everyone in the familiy is scared
Very nice video! I'll be trying to replace my left 2006 CRV low-beam tomorrow.
Now Dave - how do I replace bulbs behind my dashboard??
I must say I wish Honda would not have designed their headlights like this as it is a dramatically huge pain in the ass but thank you for showing me how to do it
Thanks, but I wish you could show the retaining clip as it holds the bulb.
Thanks so much for helping me save money and do it myself! You instructions were great! My low light took me 20 min for the first one, then second for the second one. Noted you are a Hog fan too! Woo-pig-sooie, Razorback! Thanks again!
Took me 1 hour to get that f*cking clip before I looked it up, then I got it in 5 minutes XD you the GOAT man
Glad i could assist. Much appreciation for watching!
Mission accomplished! Thank you so much. Couldn't figure out that damn clip when attempting it beforehand, but this video made it a cinch. Thoroughly explained and well done. Intensely rewarding now that I can do it myself and not rely on Tires Plus. You rock, bro!
Thanks for that video. Wanted to prove to my husband and myself that I could do that wee job. That clip was a rat but I got it in the end. Noticed you clipped the video off at that point and then when you put it back on it was done...guessing it was difficult to video and manhadle the clip at the same time. 3 hands would have been needed. Thanks again.
im glad i watched this before using pliers to pull the bulb holder out. Could have been bad. Thank you.
Thanks Dave, easy after your Video, you must have the fingers of a surgeon, that clip was my stumbling block but now no problem. Cheers.
Did this the other night.....but lost the connector/terminal piece....as it fell off and was not connected like it should be.....made me think one of the mechanics yanked on it too hard in a past repair.....and it fell into the bottom of the protective unit underneath the vehicle. When I replaced that bulb, making sure it went all the way in, then to test it...my regular/low beams still did not work, so not sure what the issue is. After that, was connecting the terminal piece and thats when it fell into the bottom.....must be something with the wiring inside the headlight itself...or connecting to the headlight going along side the engine. Unforturtunately grew up learning almost nothing about vehicle repairs. All I have ever done is replace air filters under the hood or behind the dashboard/glove compartment of the vehicle....and once was able to replace the spark plugs with a good friend of mine having the right tool to do so.
it helps if you have small hands, though it can be done regardless. Just takes a bit more time.
Thanks bro. Your gift keeps on giving.
Changed mine with no problem! Thanks so much for the video!!
Veey nice video. And you've got a good way of presenting it too. Thanks very much. By the way, I would have preferred you to show pulling the old bulb out and pushing the new one in, since it is a critical step.
Thank you Dave. I'm just a girl and I changed my own light bulb. So tired of getting scammed from car mechanics to change my headlight bulbs. I just changed my headlight for $8!
Yaaaay! Very glad i could help you with this simple project.
Just forwarded this to my daughter at college - she called tonight "Dad, headlight is burned out..." :)
Thank you, Dave :) I couldn't release that darn metal retaining ring until I watched your vid. The dealer bent it when replacing the bulb last time and I had to use a needle nose to push it. You great vid showed me which way to release it. BTW, I don't know how you got such a great video angle from the right side. It's almost like you disassembled the entire headlight mount to shoot it. Be well.
Putting the clip back on was a major pain. Very helpful video though...thanks!
A big mahalo there guy. Awesome stuff! Getting the retaining clip off was a nightmare, and there wasn't too much room for my hands on the left side looking front opposite the battery. This was the hardest thing for me to do. But once this was achieved, it all went back together really easily....other then to be sure that both prongs are in the hole of the boot. =)
Aloha Brah, Ive had a time getting the clip off, Its hard to see where the pressure is applied to remove it? Mahalo for any advice.
huuuii! aloha mai kākou! i’m stuck trying to get da clip open on passenger side. its my only day off today, so if anyone can kokua mai, i would appreciate it!!!
huuuii! aloha mai kākou! i’m stuck trying to get da clip open on passenger side. its my only day off today, so if anyone can kokua mai, i would appreciate it!!!
Great Video, I was able to replace the lamp for just over $6.00. Thank you very much.
Thank you for the video! I was able to change a headlight by myself, with your help.
+Sarah Keeling awesome. Glad I could help.
Thanks Dave, this was very helpful. I was able to finish my install with your help within 20 min.
I just changed them and it wasn't too bad thanks to this video
Any extra advice for doing the passenger side? Driver side has more room. My fat hand can't get to the passenger side boot 😞
thank you now i don't need no guy to change my car headlights i could do them all by myself thanks to you:-)
Thank you sooo much my husband insisted i bought the wrong bulb due to seeing 2 prongs.
Good to know this can apply to the Ridgeline too. Glad to help!
Thanks, great video. Helped me get the job done quickly in sub zero temperatures!
Thanks on how to do this but would love to see the difference between standard to nice extreme Philips or hid's
Great video, it was easy once you know how the retaining clip operates. No tools required.
Thank you for taking the time to post this clear and helpful video. Much obliged.
Thanks dude! My dad sent me your video :)
Thank you! Just did it first try appreciate it!
Thanks for the tip Classic Gamers HQ
Thanks for the insight it certainly save me time trying to figure it out.
extra ac line? this job was frustrating enough. Good to know it all went well.
So push the clip in,the to the right to unlatch it ?? I'm on the A/C side not the Battery side it's buried ,but I'll try pushing in and to the right .
So so helpful thank you so much, just changed it as I watched your video it was awesome
It does seem counterintuitive that high beam and low beam are the same bulb but they are?
Thank you so much. I just did this easy replacement myself!
can u show how to do 2005 CR-V HID conversion kit installation?
People Do not, I repeat do not try to substitute for after-market LED, after my third attempt I gave up. What Amazon sent me did not fit and then try eBay they fit but the intensity was so low that it felt like both lights were off. Now I'm on my way to Auto Zone
Trying to change my low beam headlight on the passenger side but forgot to remember the orientation. Does the flat piece go in the bottom right or left? I also noticed the socket differ in color on each side, one copper and the other is red. Does that matter at all? Thanks
Thanks so much Dave, did it myself and prob saved me $20.
I’m not sure how you got all that room, my battery is sitting right up on the driver’s side of the back side of the headlight, very little room, you have to remove the battery. The passenger side is easy to get to.
Thanks a lot Dave. You saved me few dollars. Good Video
