I had an old Killer Whale oversized steel 5 wood decades ago. It hit like a boring 3 wood off the deck, but tee it up and it hit like a 5 wood. My favorite club ever. So versatile and confidence building. It reminds me of what Rick is describing as a mini-driver with a higher loft.
I have a 13 degree 3 wood with a big face that I’ve learned to hit off the ground as well. There is a bit of an issue gapping wise between that and my 3 iron, but it doesn’t come up too frequently.
I played a tight course a few weeks ago and my mate lended me his mini driver, just made me so confident off the tea even bad hits stay in bounds, and genuinely only about 10 yards less distance
Funny thing is, I can’t hit my driver like at all, idk why but I always slice it to the right, as a righty. But I can hit my 3 wood dead strait or damn near strait everytime. I’ve always wanted to try mini driver, but they are way too expensive.
Might I make a few suggestions? With your driver... A- Try moving the ball a little more forward in your stance. This will allow the head of the club more time to come around, closing the face a little. B- Tee it up a bit higher. This helps you get the ball up into the air a bit more. C- Choke down on the grip about ½-1 inch. A lot of players have shafts that are too long for them. D- Swing softer and focus more on your swing path than your distance. If hit properly, you'll send the ball much further than swinging hard and using a mis-hit. Best of luck and I like Danny Maude's instructions. He's great at explaining things in a manner I can understand.😊
Get a Taylormade Aeroburner Mini. They're a few years old but they are a CANNON and feel great, just splurge on a quality shaft instead of the 50g stock. I LOVED mine
@@glenj.taylor2938 I used to tee the ball up on the inside of my forward heel with a pink castle tee and swung hard. The only time I could hit it straight is if I spun out of my stance, sort of like how Lexi Thompson kicks her front foot forward, just more dramatic. Like you mentioned, since I’ve moved the ball forward a bit, switched to the taller orange tee, and taken a lot of the tension out of my arms (feeling as if I’m swinging easier), I’m now much straighter and longer. According to my Garmin watch/app, my driver avg is up to 272 with 310 being my longest.
I think you might be missing the point of mini driver - I think the market here is really an alternative to driver, not with driver. Can’t hit driver, could be the option
I've been playing a 400cc 13* Henry Griffitts driver with a tour Stiff shaft for years now. Consistently hit it 260+ in the fairway, the hight gets up from time to time, but I live in LV so it doesn't matter much.
We have some really tight courses here in Virginia and I use mine as a big 3 wood off the tee. Honestly I don’t hit my 3 wood much off the fairway due to that also. I use a 7 wood and I love how high I can hit it onto a green if I need too
I would like to see a true 2-wood that provides more versatility off the deck -- maybe about 230-250 cc head. The 300 cc heads work ok but are more limiting.
Rick, you might be thinking about Marty Jertson (Ping) and his WITB ... He carries a standard driver, then a 12 degree driver with a 43 inch shaft as his fairway finder. I have tried building something similar but it's just too weird with such a giant head on a short shaft. I prefer the mini drivers.
Think about the history and evolution of the modern driver, and why it evolved in the wrong direction for most golfers. What happened was that drivers in the 1990's and before used to be the size of the Mini Driver. But they were difficult to hit because of the technology and a smaller sweet spot. Some still had the face screwed on with a screw in the center of the club face. Then someone came up with the idea of the Big Bertha - an oversized driver head that would have a larger sweet spot. The pros had the skill to use it, people like John Daley. Regular golfers thought that would improve their driving. So that trend became the new driver in the late 90s and 2000s, up until today. Thus as technology evolved, it only went into the larger "Big Bertha" style driver. While they can hit far when swung properly, the weight and inertia of the large driver head does not work for most golfers, even with the larger sweet spot. So Taylormade did something great -- they put modern driver technology into the 1990's sized driver head. And the Mini BRNR was born. It is a great driver that most golfers should be using instead of the large (now "normal") driver head. I recommend it to most people. Most people cannot hit 4 or 5 fairways playing 9 holes with the "normal" large driver head. They should switch to the mini. The modern day large driver head just doesn't work for most people, the weight and momentum of the large club head, along with the necessary longer shaft to make a proper swing weight, is terrible to control and should have never happened for non-professionals. So glad to see modern technology poured into the classic driver head size. I love mine! I hit it straight and plenty far. When I'm alone and no one is behind me, I sometimes hit my Stealth 2 plus after my Mini drive to compare. Often the Mini outdrives the Stealth 2 plus, at least for my swing. I highly recommend it.
The BRNR mini driver has changed my game. Flush it much better than my regular driver and much easier to hit off the deck than my normal fairway woods.
I keep saying golf is really enjoyable if you look at it like fishing. You can go hours without a great fish but one good one makes the whole day worth it. Golf isn't the problem. It's our approach to the game that sucks!
Regarding driver head/3-wood shaft...last year Liam from Golf Mates did a club combo with a 3-wood head and a 5-wood shaft or hybrid shaft I think. Sort of along the same lines.
Just got the qi10 max which seems to have solved my fairway finding problem with the driver. Mini driver is my next fitting. I cant hit my 3 wood to save my life so its a logical progression. 9 degree driver, 11.5-12.5 mini driver, 19 utility wood
Rick definitely can’t rap his mind around the BRNR. The 13.5 definitely plays like a 15 degree 3 wood.. the taylormade 3 woods at 15 degree are hot! They go miles but the Brnr with the weight back and 13.5 degree of loft is also hot but is more forgiving and spins a touch more off the deck. It’s such a good option but he has his mind set on it.
If you could have 15 clubs it’s a no-brainer. The problem is what do you take out on a regular basis to justify spending $400 on a club that you’re going to use every so often it’s just ridiculous for most people.
Mini Driver are 2 woods, and when i was a junior they were the go to option off the tee. But with modern equipment, why can you not hit driver? Well if you are Rick, it’s because he insists on Low Spin driver, that’s not as forgiving.
Funny y'all mention a driver head but with a 3 wood shaft gentlemen that's what I got a TaylorMade Stealth 2 driver with a 3 wood shaft averaging around 265+ but my longest being 331
I can’t hit my driver for shit. I tried a friends Taylormade mini driver for a round before and I couldn’t hit that either. Just slice slice slice just like my driver. It’s clearly my swing. But what’s funny is I can hit my 5 wood lofted down to a 4 wood dead straight every time. Golf is strange. 😂
