It's amazing how a thick layer of chip drop, wood chips (chopped leaves & branches) keeps the weeds down and feeds the soil and add this great fluffy wood humus that helps make the soil more fluffy and less dense.
I'm doing some experiments, just wood chips vs steer manure on clay soil with thick layer of the wood chips on top for next years garden.

That's a great idea. I tried that a few years back and it didn't work for me. I have a partially shaded garden space surrounded by trees without much wind. So the chips retained water well, almost too well, because they started to mold and caused some bad mildew problems on my plants. I think it's a great idea, it just didn't work in my instance. 😉

I have never blanched my celery. Last year i couldn't even find seeds for celery. Got celery growing and i heard it does well in a fall garden so have starts in the house as well. My friend always used paper sacks for his. He's the person who told me you need to do it. I will be using paper this year. But whatever works, go for it. Those files would proabbly hold up better for my fall ones.

That's a good idea too. Never thought of using paper sacks. Good luck to your fall crop! Thanks for sharing your idea! 😄

@@GagneFarms absolutely. I never have done a fall/winter crop before so I will have a lot of errors but I think I have a good plan.

Don't forget to chop and freeze the green tops of the onions
