- The STRALES system represents an evolution for the 76/62 naval artilleries which includes: a 76/62 naval gun, DART guided ammunition and a Radio Frequency Guidance System with associated electronics.
This System is the most effective response to the emerging requirements for medium calibre naval guns, demanding the highest level of lethality within evolving scenarios in Air Defence as well as in Anti Surface actions.
STRALES is extremely effective against today generation of anti-ship missiles and also in ASuW, especially where simultaneous engagement of multiple manoeuvring targets is involved, cooperating with the unique sustained firing capability of 76mm gun.
DART is a sub-calibre projectile with canard which is directed to the target by the guidance beam generated by an antenna placed on the gun mount within a protective shield Its effectiveness is further increased by pre-fragmented warhead and 3AP microwave programmable fuze.
To fulfil the new challenging requirements like manoeuvring anti-ship missiles even the supersonic ones, Oto Melara has developed the DART (Driven Ammunition with Reduced Time of flight) guided projectile, capable to be re-vectored towards the target during its time of flight.
DART ammunition can be fired by the 76mm Strales system, that presents new features:
- double ammunition feeding system,
- digital console
- guidance antenna
- gun shield r
- electronic equipment specifically designed for the DART ammunition guidance.

The problem I can see with Strales is that its very dependent on Radar. I would like to see how the system performs under High ECM conditions

@@jurajsintaj6644 It does work, it's being proven in the red sea. unlike other ships having to return for replenishment, italian ships can stay longer in the area as they hit the targets using mostly the oto melara.

Or if you want to stop projectiles from hitting you, one of the best way is to put up a literal wall, regardless if its material or a form of energy, it will prevent the projectiles or deflect their course to you. What if you can pack a gun type nuke in an 105mm projctile, that will serve as a better implement in stopping other projectiles

What happens if an incoming missile detonates in close proximity to the ship? Won't that damage the beam emitter, thus reducing gun effectiveness? (Need to switch to ship fire control system?)
+safetybearry Yes, debris from exploding ordinance can cause severe damage to the superstructure and the equipment on it, resulting in a mission kill; the ship can likely no longer achieve objectives if its RADAR or comms capabilities are taken out
It's a risk but this is last minute defense and the Animation shows them closer for a better view. Irl you won't even see it.
That's the risk you take with every CIWS. But this is the latest layer defense, in real life an Aster would do the job.

At 20km range, time of flight would be about a minute, and they managed to hit moving SPGs at that range? Surely it would have been better for whatever had eyes on the SPGs to launch missiles at them itself.

Flares aren''t especially useful against radar-guided weapons, and chaff doesn't help too much against beam-riders.

Besides if it's jammed, won't make much difference.
It's a directional radio beam like ILS on airplane! The bullet stays in the middle of the four radio signals! If the left radio signal become stronger, it steer to the right and so on! If you want to jam the signal, you must point directly to the bullet that is moving a speed of sound! (provided you know the exact frequency)!

I'll buy the assymetric warfare, but if you intent to use darts to stop other projectiles is impossible, misiles are able to do that since the dont rely on gyroscopic motion for stability. The darts intented to be use are not stable if they are not spinning but how to you pitch and yaw if the fins on the card are spinning? You are better off using multiple projectiles like the phalanx gun when stoping other projectiles.

Fins automatically stabilize the round. It's why tanks use Smoothbore guns because the fins do all of the work for them.

Watch the real test videos... the 76mm DART ammunition is amazing. In the real test video, they use it to shoot down accurately some drones mimicking anti-ship missiles.

@@rocketassistedgoat1079 The systems were designed to counter high divers and AVMF Naval Aviation regiments during the cold war out on the open ocean.
The Argentinians knew how to counter them effectively in the littorals, fly low and present a fleeting target especially in the confines of the littorals. Some of the AAW SAMs needed 8 seconds to go from detection to launch , they never got anywhere near that time and low level clutter renders tracking radars without MTI moot.
Rapier SAM should have done far better but without a prox` fuze proved next to useless.
