  • It's #OpeningDay, and the 2022 Major League Baseball season is underway! As a huge fan of baseball, I've spent more than my fair share of time playing tons of baseball video games throughout the years. And the console that I played the most baseball on was probably the Super Nintendo.
Today, I want to take a look back at all 20 games released in the US on the SNES about the great sport of Baseball. There are some absolute gems on this list - but, truth be told, there's also some absolute garbage. Join me as I run through every game on the list, and rank them S-F!

The funny thing about Ken Griffey Jr. Presents MLB is that all the real players ARE there in the game - just without their real names. When I was a kid, I actually went through every team's roster, matched every player's stats with those of the real life players, and changed the name of every single player to the real name before starting a full season. (The game let you edit names.) Tedious, but I thought it was cool that I could do that.

As they expected us to.😁They didn't have the license but those devs still put in the work with all the stats and added the edit option. Best they could do to not let us down. Very cool of them.😉

I assume the look is every bit as good on the neo geo but does it have the rpg elements being an arcade game? I wouldnt think so and thats really sad as that was pretty unique along w the presentation. But nothing lost if the graphics and everything else is the same as the neo geo ver.

So happy to see Extra Innings get some recognition! We played this like crazy back in the day, and it's a very balanced game with scores that stay realistic as you get better at it. Loved the fictional rosters of scientists, poets, architects, game executives, and even magazine editors. The original was a licensed Japanese game with real players, and it got two sequels that were never translated. So much fun!

@@SquarePegs for sure! I recently decided to start collecting all of the baseball games for the SNES. One last speaking point for the Tecmo game. You could change the hitting and pitching view by pressing the select button. I just found this game at a store for $8 and was overjoyed. The game I had growing up didn’t save any progress and I never knew what it was like to complete a 162 game season. It has the greatest players from my childhood and I can’t wait to mash 100 homers with Bonds. One of the only games in existence to have my childhood favorite player. Again thanks for the insight in your video. It deserves way more views and I’m going to hit that subscribe button now. Best of luck and keep up the great content.

The SNES baseball game I played the most with my friends was not covered here-it’s Sports Illustrated Football & Baseball. Objectively, I’d say it’s fine. Field looks okay, animations are smooth, no licensing so all the players are named after the game’s programmers and other staff. Hitters have a speed and power rating you can see during every at bat. Pitchers are rated similarly. The fans boo every single out when the home team is batting, which is so bad that it’s actually hilarious. But its biggest flow is that nearly every ball put in play could be made into an out as long as it’s not a HR, and that’s in large part due to every player on the diamond having the ability to throw the ball it superhuman speeds. You can’t make errors but you do have the ability to jump or dive for a batted ball-but it will just go right through the fielder every single time. All in all, it’s an okay game. Definitely better than the football game it shares a cart with.

Appreciate your commentary for these ranked vids. I saw you had SNES baseball, and all i wanted to know was your thoughts on one game, and i bet... you know that game is a fav of many, because its the only game you threw a precursor/warning in. Super Bases Loaded is in my top 15-25 SNES games. The view was def not a fav of. I also, did not play the NES games, avoided them actually.
Side: Didn't like 2 or 3, at all. Loved when 3 went back to the pitch view.
I am younger, and I am sure that plays a factor. I've REPLAYED a few of those games within the last 10yrs, they dont have the same feel as they did when i played in the time they were in... SBL fun factor still reigns for me. Again, gameplay. At that age, didnt care about seasons/etc etc. It was couch vs and bragging rights lol
But what I will say, Super Bases Loaded was my ABSOLUTE fav on field gameplay, pitching/etc. Everything for that time, and my older bros and I still throw it on once in a blue. RBI baseball didnt translate over to the SNES for us, those NES games are legendary, the SNES might be for others, but we made the switch.
I didnt see your SEGA GEN one, but i look fwd to hearing about WORLD SERIES BASEBALL thoughts lol. IMO - best of the SNES / GEN era.

What partially drives me a little batty, due to my thing of wanting perfection, there are technically 21 baseball playable games on snes. I say technically cause the game sports illustrated baseball and football has both sports titles but as little as some titles have , I’d give it a D or F but it should be ranked :-) the baseball nerd in me has so much to comment on . I think it’s why I was a sega person cause World Series did a lot of things right. The Ken Griffey games are definitely a blast to play though. I don’t blame games for not having full seasons until the Saturn /ps1 / n64 era of gaming where they had hard drives or memory cards to store stats outside the cart itself.

These were interesting to check out cause I was a Genesis guy, didnt get a SNES till like 2000 of my own, although my best friend had one and let me borrow it from time to time... it was always to play Mario Kart and all the Mario World games, and All Stars. The problem here is, World Series Baseball were the main baseball games then. THEY WERE SEGA SPORTS. And up until the 2K baseball series died, that series (which was later named 2K with Dreamcast) was king! EA Sports never really hit the mark sadly. Triple Play was OK but, meh. So SNES was NOT the place to go for baseball games but it does have some good ones now that I look back! Gotta try the Griffey one when I got the time!
he 1 game I wanted to see was Super Baseball 2020. I of course grew up with it on Genesis, and it was always an insanely fun game due to the powerups and the 'rpg' like mechanics of doing special moves to get extra money, to power up further, managing who gets what powerup when, and when to use all your pitchers etc. The problem is, as an adult, it's easier to see every way to exploit the AI in the game, and boy is it easy. There's been times I tested how far I could go, and ended up with over 100 runs in a game lol. But that's only after like 1000 hours lifetime on it in the last 30 years.
So I was like man, if this isn't an S I'll cry, even though the SNES version has worse sounds, the colors look better, and it's actually harder than the Genesis version I've found (so it might be better even though Nostalgia makes me think otherwise)

Its the same game, they just improved and fixed everything imaginable.
