This movie and The Prince of Egypt are my absolute FAVORITE renditions of the book of Exodus. I grew up with The Prince of Egypt so it will always hold a special place in my heart, but I've come to appreciate this version as an adult the more I see it. I wasn't as crazy about Nefertari's relationship with Moses or the way she was used as the force to harden Pharaoh's heart, but it's grown on me more and more. It also kind of alludes to the kind of women that are detested in the bible, like Jezebel.
So, does anyone else think the part with Rameses asking the God of the Dead to bring his son back to life is one of the best acted scenes in the movie? Yul Brynner was such a fine actor.
3 years late, but Yul Brynner gave, in my opinion, the best performance in the movie. The fact that he wasn't nominated for best supporting actor is a crime.
I grew up in a church family but I never truly partook in any activities but unfortunately because of family image I had to. But my uncle was a very well know pastor in our town. He passed away last year and a few cities he preached in came to say goodbye but he had ALL the movies. Samson, ten commandments, alot of Bible cartoons for his kids, and some westerns from the 50s. His dad my grandpa prayed everyday but he never preached. But whenever this came on tv with snoopy and Garfield MAN was I transported back to a land of youth and innocence. All holidays were celebrated at the church a couple towns away. Just buffets, people coming out to talk, laugh, and have fun. Me and my cousin's and siblings were ALWAYS running around, yelling, playing tag or something but I'd always be taking off to the church hall to grab a few pops and run out before my mom could catch me and tell me "only one!" Lol. Then my uncle or his wife would tell me to go visit one of their children at their house not even that far. So I'd go in and this would be going and my older cousin, the pastors son with one of my bigger cousins would be playing on Nintendo. Either excitebike or kungfu or another game. We're all grown now and with family passing away left and right from the virus and life's curses we turn back the clock and watch these shows and tell the younger ones how fun it was back then. But I love this movie to death. 10 out of 10 lol
I love the touch of Ramses admitting to denying the existence of even the Egyptian Gods, cementing that he truly thought he was the decider of everything.
Rameses is a good illustration of people over-educated into atheism. Rameses was too sophisticated for his own good until he had to come crawling to his god for assistance. No sophistication here, just a heartbroken father. It's sad really.
@@humps678 Sorry if you misunderstood but I really wasn't trying to be funny. The thing is I've known parents who've lost a child and if you're a loving mother and father it's a heartbreak only the grave can erase. Rameses is certainly the "bad guy" here but I do feel sorry for him. Sons are supposed to bury their fathers, not the other way around.
The exodus is moving, stirring. Demille was a master visual story teller. One can feel the total excitement the Hebrews must have felt being released from 450 years of bondage.
Imagine being an Egyptian soldier and witnessing this... I'd be like...uh ok .. there God is God...and lay down my weapons and drop to my knees and ask for forgiveness!....
It was while shooting these crowd scenes that DeMille suffered a heart attack and was sidelined. Some scenes were directed by makeup man Bud Westmore, because he knew English!

I love the line where Rameses admits that he has denied the gods of Egypt. In "Spartacus", Charles Laughton tells his aide: "As to the gods, privately I believe in none of them. Publicly, of course, I believe in all of them." One wonders if Christianity spread so rapidly throughout the Roman Empire because the Christian vision of God was so fundamentally different from the Greco-Roman pantheon. God as seen by Christians and Jews was not a sexual philanderer or a petty tyrant, but someone infinite, remote without being inaccessible, and possessed of a transcendent vision of creation.
Ramses wasnt a bad person. You could see it here, he was just so embedded in his culture. But his heart softened when it came to his baby. Although he struck again, he didnt lose his life and still became a great king. I still love the dynamic with him and Nefertiri
Ramses must've been a great pharaoh even after all that destruction that was caused by god unleashing the plagues on Egypt for his refusal to let the Israelites go free from their slavery he must've been able to recover from all the damage that had been done during the plagues and had a good long reign over his kingdom until he passed away at the age of 92

they put more money into films today with CGI, yet 1000's of real extras, and excellent writing with the only agenda is to make a film and not a political statement, Hollywood has fallen, what was hidden is now known and its now crumbled. they can't make films like this anymore. talent is so rare,

This is the origin of Palestinians. Clearly, it was Israel who owned Israel from then til now. The Palestinians are the occupiers.
that is a hugely impressive amount of wealth to be owned by "slaves."
Lots was given to them from the Egyptians when they left and God blessed their flocks and herds.
