When will you review the other Trainbots? This is my favorite video review from you. I also like trains. (My profile picture is a robot made of 4 trains (Brave series)
A lot of the issues with this figure would've been completely excusable if this thing was a leader figure, and trust me it's not either too complicated or too big to not be a leader. Studio Series Leader Grimlock is bigger than this guy, and this transformation is pretty simple too. Especially for a masterpiece. I mean I'd argue Leader Dino Megatron has as complex a transformation as this. Literally all they'd have to change to make this a leader figure is remove some of the accessories and get rid of the die cast. It almost feels like this was supposed to be a Legacy figure but with minor upgrades to make it a "masterpiece."
I'm amazed that nobody has made a transforming Thomas the tank engine yet. I mean, there is a transforming DeLorean (from back to the future) and a transforming ghost buster mobile.
I love the fact that the transformation takes up pretty much the entirety of the "anger" section. If that doesn't describe modern masterpiece to a tee, then I don't know what does.
One of your best intros! Like, the fact that Shouki spoke Japanese for it is top tier, but the fucking sound cue and Thomas's befuddled expression were absolutely _tres magnifique_
23:16 Alternative, more complex, but possibly better overall alternative: Have the Bogey be two halves (front and back), which share a common rotation axis *until fully rotated 180°* , at which point, they will actually separate and fill in either side of the leg. HasTak and third-parties have already made this kind of engineering before, especially with CHUG Megatron. There's honestly ample space.
That's what Moon's doing. Your option would've felt more MP feeling than my "honestly just do what model trains already do!" But i was making a point about how stupid easy it would've been
13:39 this is proof of just how out of whack Transformers scaling is. So when it comes down to things, don’t be afraid to put a jet that is huge in real life next to a simple deluxe car robot, they will work just fine.
I was completely on board with the Raiden set until Emgo posted his Shouki review and I saw the 95% clear plastic alt mode. Return to golden-age MP engineering, an official MP combiner, and Raiden finally getting a new set, only for them to ruin it with material that will break, warp and shatter if you look at it wrong. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
Well, the train may have been a let down but nothing screams quality more than your stop motion segments. Especially loved the ending bit of Hot Rod throwing down track for them xD
An alt mode scale accurate line/media is my dream, though I'd personally change some of the alt modes of certain characters such as the Seekers to be smaller jets so they're not as gigalithic compared to everyone else.
And this marks it. The moment that main line matched masterpiece completely. And in some ways due to the overlap surpassed it. There were some MP disappointments in the past and more and more frequently but this is the pretty clear-cut line this figure feels like a main line.
welcome to the channel! I recommend the Kingdom Cyclonus and Earthrise Bluestreak/Smokescreen videos. they have some of my favourite animations I've made
The fact that this video is structured around the five stages of grief which are transitioned between with law and order title cards is great. Also him screaming in Japanese was pretty funny, great job! Also the new logo has chad energy which I find oddly fitting.
Just makes me love my RID Team Bullet Train even more. 3 great trains that linked together, had 3 unique and excellent robot modes, and a gestalt that was way ahead of its time.
I did totally think you would love this figure until you started talking about your experiences with him in your Discord server (link in the description) :p
I was so excited to hear they were going to do a masterpiece raiden, even if I couldn’t afford it I thought maybe it would mean we could a version in generations. Now seeing both the official and 3rd party versions it’s kinda disappointing. I’m still hoping for a generations version
That intro. My man. I thought the skit in Overdose 4 was great... but that just _hits_ for me, man. This is officially my favorite review video you've done.
When I watched the transformation, it felt super Earthrise. The robot also portrays that feeling again, but the paint is really nice, like a modded mainline figure
If I remember rightly titans return preceptor uses a similar sliding along a pin thing for the microscope shoulder cannon piece, and frankly after seeing how this one turned out that moon studio set's looking pretty good right about now.
This is probably one of my favorite reviews of yours yet. I've been a fan since the early wfc reviews and I feel they've been increasing in quality ever since. The jokes in this one are top notch - I loved the whole five stages of grief motif, plus the whole law and order thing was hilarious. I also really love your animation, it's so smooth and satisfying, especially the chest-to-robo thing! And lastly, I love the inclusion of Thomas characters. Being a fan of the show myself I can't help but adore the opening skit, it got a good chuckle out of me, plus that one shot of percy was oddly satisfying. All in all, another stellar video, despite the figure in question being rather meh (those feet scare me so bad lol). Can't wait for the next one! 😁
These really feel like they were meant to be like a big $200 titan class combiner in chug or even a haslab project but the last second that idea shifted to putting them in the masterpiece halfway through designing making The designers have to go back to the drawing board and add stuff to make them feel “premium” which mostly fall flat
Don't be so hard on youself for not liking this, it's a valid critique and trust me, we're never disappointed by your reviews, be them in whatever order they are. It's nice to see how passionate you are about trains.
I have a feeling that most of the price of the figure comes from the licensing and the (as far as I know) absolutely massive train sub-culture in Japan compared to most of the rest of the world, meaning that the people this thing is made for (Japanese salary men who were kids in the '80's) are probably ready, willing and able to shill out the Yen for it. I just hope that we can get a CHUG version of these characters, no matter the accuracy to any real trains. We need more trains and boats in the main lines of Transformers. Heck, just re-issue RiD '01 Rail Racer. Those guys are still awesome.
I appreciate someone else who likes things in scale. I'd rather have all the car modes completely in scale with each other based on their real counterparts than have the robot modes in scale with their cartoon versions.
There is always compromises when something has to transform into multiple things. My guess is the two things the designers wanted more was the Raiden and the train modes.
As someone who is both a fan of Transformers and Model trains, I absolutely love how this review nitpicks the rail stuff just as much as the actual figure! Fantastic work!
I was conflicted on whether to get these because the train modes looked good and maybe the combined mode will be good, but then that image of the combined mode came out and, nope, no longer conflicted, not getting them
That intro was the best thing EVER! And I ABSOLUTELY get the excitement about things being to accurate scale! I'm low-key obsessed with scale in my own toy collecting. Bummer on the chairs tho. Seems like weird choices were made there. Your replacement cab looks awesome!
the in scale vehicle transformers really drives home the idea of the initial conflict between soldiers and workers decepticons not only being trained for war and having agressive alternate modes, but being much larger than the average autobot. this also really helps the issue with there being so many more autobots than decepticons when the first toys were released (also reminds me that animated did that very same thing with scale and is just another point towards TFA being possibly the best transformers series)
The intro was great, I really hate it didn't meet your expectations, Your prologue gave me so much hope for you. personally, I was never into the trains, but you are and I wanted this to be awesome for you.
Lazy Eyebrow, your work is STILL awesome bro! Yes indeed, the Takara one is surely the most accurate. However, I will say the MOON Studios did make an awesome stab at it as well, and cheaper. Not gonna lie, Takara has the look, but for the money, Moon didnt do bad. Thanks for your commentary, and glad to see your doing well!!✌🏼😎👍🏼
These masterpiece figures coming out have peaked my interest, however there is a third party company that have already made this combiner and they seem a lot better looking overall compared to these. Just my opinion.
The combination of the feet-bottoms being painted parts + so much of him being made of clear plastic... *Oof*, this guy is gonna be a MINEFIELD to keep in decent-ish condition.
I hope you get the full set. I would assume the experiences from those working in the Prime Trilogy wouldn’t amount to too much due to weight differences. Shouki and Hotspot might be about to same size, but Hotspot didn’t have as much metal, and it would be five more Shouki size figures. Actually how much does Shouki weigh?
Great review! I really like how you bring some knowledge about toy-engineering to the table in your criticisms, it makes your thoughts and points stand out and feel really genuine, as you're not just talking about stuff you think would look better or be better, but actually bringing objective evidense the designs either do something very well, or could easily do something a lot better. I also must commend you on that opening skit, it was hilarious! It also hit on some nostalgia for me, because I grew up with Transformers as well as Thomas, so I came up with weird crossover fan-fics between the two when I was 5 or 6. On the subject of this figure, I honestly agree with you about everything. I don't like how a lot of Takara's figures feel overpriced, or have an unnecessarily jacked up part count to justify said price (like MP 44 or 45), but this is the first MP I've seen that feels utterly unfinished--and in a worse way than the MPM figures sometimes do. Usually one thing Takara does well is getting anime-y, almost gundam-esque proportions for characters, but the blocky legs and stubby thighs feel really CHUG, the combiner mode is so shoddy looking it gives me flashbacks to the 2017 minicon three-pack, and all the clear plastic seems like a disaster waiting to happen. I am aware that you are a not a fan of the set, and that it has its own issues, but if MPG Getsuei doesn't do it for you, I would recommend picking up one of the Moon Toys figures just to see what you think of it. Even without the proper model train scaling, they appear to have much more satisfying transformations and prettier robot modes.
I have been subscribed for a while because of your stop motion review but this is probably the best one i have ever seen I really like this video and thank you for the review!!
I personally really enjoy how the robot looks, kibble and everything, looks great to me with more realistic aesthetic, but some issues are just glaring. Though it's only the first one of a whole set so you'll probably have a blast with the others if they learn from this one
After the $50,160.00 Omega Supreme I got ($160 for Omega and the 50K divorce my wife threatened me with) I’ve got to be a bit more picky with what I get.
Shouki, leader of the Trainbots from the Japanese series, Transformers Headmasters, transform into a classic Shinkansen 0 series electric locomotive, but if you want to collect the other four Trainbots of the MPG subline, you can built one giant super-robot Raiden or you can connect them together just like Galaxy Express 999! I really like the drunken hobo conductor and the butt-plug clear plastic joke, especially the Law & Order transition scene, one of the classic original crime drama TV series.
What an amazing review, if only "Masterpiece" Transformers were half as good; they rarely deliver on the moniker these days. Anyway, having a train enthusiast cover this release was great to see and made the content all the more enjoyable - great work.
Excellent review! Thank you! Wow, people are really raving about three small die-cast metal parts on this thing? Oh, those dear, sweet summer children -- how quickly they forget the early Masterpiece Transformers . . . .
Sorry you we're let down by this one Lazy, It wasn't something I was going to buy in MP scale, but I sure was looking forward to watching a review on Shouki.. Still glad I watched yours.
As always I enjoy your rambling about the scale and the likeness to the real Shinkansen. I am glad you pointed out the feet. That was a point that made me very worried about buying it. All those clear plastic pieces also worry me. But thanks as always for honest about him Lazy. Enjoy the rest of your weekend Eyebrow family!!
That they keep using clear plastic for critical parts and put painted outher pannels on the bottom of the feet is a good indicator that the hasbro and takara teams go for astetics more then actual function.
Not even a MINUTE in, you got the Thomas vibe basically *_down-pat_* for the intro, even got the sting for the O-Face - beautiful! *Chef's Kiss This is gonna be good! (:
Thanks for another great video. I've seen this with other reviews as well, and it was the same for me trying to get into MPs... It's just not worth it, given how good the mainline has become. Great if people enjoy these, but I'm much happier spending 80 bucks on Commander Class Rodimus which does everything I wanted it to do since 1986.

Oh, those dear, sweet summer children -- how quickly they forget the early Masterpiece Transformers . . . .
Planes, trains, and automobiles...Lazy got us covered
Great review! I was really surprised how simple the transformation was.
I kinda was too. Like that next morning when i flipped back and forth it was nice to not have to refer back to anything
@@TheLazyEyebrow You had very good point about how they could have improved it with some extra steps in the transformation.
Sorry you we're let down by this one Lazy, It wasn't something I was going to buy in MP scale, but I sure was looking forward to watching a review on Shouki.. Still glad I watched yours.
DAMN that looks good alongside all your scale vehicles! And that's in scale with the MP seekers? That's awesome!
no no, in scale with Earthrise Seekers, definitely not Masterpiece haha
*Chef's Kiss
This is gonna be good!
That’s cool man, I’ve always been a fan of trains since I was a little kid, as much as I loved Transformers. This is definitely a great mix of the two
