Mary is still beautiful and has that rich, velvetty, and powerful voice made for jazz. How wonderful it would be if there were great songwriters out there today! Keep doing what you do, Mary...you're the best!
And here's to the sublime Mary Wilson! Her self recorded CD Mary Wilson...Up Close Live From San Francisco is a wonderful testament to a survivor in both her career and life. Mary has paid her dues and is now reaping the rewards of her lifetime hard work. While Miss Ross plays it safe in her shows, Mary has ventured into new territory and it is thrilling indeed to witness her professional growth. Supremes reunion? Not so necessary... good luck Mary. We love you girl!!!
Stunning. Few touch Mary as a balladeer. I sometimes see postings lamenting her not having the chance that Ross got. True, but her career has remained high profile for 50+ years. The Supremes had 7 more top 40 hits after Ross left and Mary sang co-lead on two of those. She has had two songs hit the dance club charts including one in 2015. Her autobiographies were best sellers, she been an official cultural ambassador. She has had successful runs in musical theater productions and has spent years appearing in James Gavin's The Lena Horne Story touring production. My point is this: Wilson is a star, not the biggest and the brightest perhaps, but one of the most enduring. No need to lament her career at all IMO but a cause for celebration and admiration for her grit, tenacity and example. Love her always.
Mary Wilson is my hero. This performance is stellar. She's beautiful inside and out, she's positive and content and she deserves all the Success in the world. LOVE YOU MARY!
Mary Wilson! She truly is the "Quintessential" Supreme. No doubt about it. This lady has class, lots of Class! It's sad to think that this beautiful voice was hidden behind Diana's all those years in the Supremes. Mary, you need to do more songs like this! These are the kinds of songs your voice was made for! You are the new "Lady Day"! MORE! MORE! MORE! Robbie Stone
I could not tear my eyes away from the screen. This is stunning to me. Lord knows she has been in the business long enough to sell and song, and this performance is proof!
I had a crush on Mary 40 years ago - when I saw her as a Supreme at Detroit's Fisher Theater. And: I have a crush on her today! It's great hearing her sing in good voice and showcasing her talent!
Mary really touched me with this song. She should have record it. Mary you are one hell of a good singer and I wish you stay around with us for a long, long time.
I really like Mary Wilson's Jazz style. She reminds me alitle bit of Nancy Wilson. What a beautiful voice. I would love to hear Ms. Wilson do a Jazz Album. She has such a beautiful voice and range.
I hope today's young generation learns about the story of Mary Wilson & Diana Ross, and how that relates to the story about Diana Ross & Barry Gordy.... Thank you for this post. Ms. Wilson deserves all the appreciation & love she's getting....& so much more.
Bravo Diva! Mary has never sounded better. Her sultry voice is perfect for moody torch songs and Ballard's like this. I'm so sorry Mary's no longer with us, but at least we have videos and recordings to remember her by. Rest In Peace Queen! Touch.
For the ones SURPRISED.....The die hard fans are not. We knew her potential for years. Mary has a new show called "Up Close" with a great selection of ballads and jazz songs. She is also a master in Bossa Nova singing in full portuguese. Fourty years in this industry gave her a chance to perfect her craft. My beloved, thanks for this moment of beauty. Mike
I love Mary dearly. Just feel bad that several of her fans did not live enough to hear this song. It is beautiful. I just think of them when I hear the song. GO MARY!!!!!!
Upon my return from Las Vegas and witnessing her "LIVE" at The Riviera Hotel & Casino "Starlight Room" 6/22/11 to 7/03/11 and experiencing the performance of this song, all I can say is that there are two artist that can do justice & deliver this masterpiece, mary Wilson & Shirley Horn, TWO TRUE AMERICAN MUSIC TREASURES!
It is balsam for my ears and soul to hear Mary's soulful voice. I can't understand she is not that famous like other top singers with voice like that. Beautiful. I thing jazz fit to her.
Every time I see this video I get chills. Mary is such an exquisite singer. I have concluded that as much as I love Flo, and Diane, Mary is, by all means the Quintessential Supreme. She, I have concluded, was the best singer of the original trio. By no means does that under value Flo, who was a great singer, but Mary, well....just listen.............wow............shear magic! Like silk.....really smooth!
For those who didn't see "Mary Wilson's At The Copa" she's back by popular demand from June 22, 2011 to July 03, 2011 at "The Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas Nevada." Mary, our appointed United States Cultural Ambassador has a show that's part of her world wide tour that represents around the globe our art & culture! Mary Wilson THE QUINTESSENTIAL SUPREME!
OH MY GOD, I've NEVER heard Mary sound this good!! This is her range, her style and element. I hope she stays with this type of song and delivery, because this type of singing might actually give her the fame she's been so desperately seeking for the past several decades.
Mary Wilson has a beautiful contralto voice. This is the best version of this song that I have ever heard. She sings it with a lot of depth and meaning.
PURE CLASS ACT! LET'S HOPE ROSS AND MARY WILL SOMEDAY SOON BURY THE OLD HATCHET....Before too much more time goes by. Thanks for posting this great clip!
THAT's What "I'M" TALKIN' ABOUT! GRAMMY CONSIDERATION!!!!!! We should Look INTO that!!!!!!!!!!! I TOTALLY AGREE! THIS IS "THE" MOST AWESOME rendition of this song, I have EVER encountered! It and SHE is AWESOME! SUPREME! "Here's To Life" y'all!
@DetroitD60 ithanks for your comments.I have been a supreme fan all my life.I met mary many times, she,s a very sweet lady, and keeping the supremes alive for us.
Pixylee! THANK YOU for posting that! It is so good to 'hear'! I wanted so much to know how that went! I KNOW Mama Wilson was EXCELLENT! Wish I could've BEEN there tho! That was a noble thing to do also for the likes of Ms. Bofill! Ceej
I ditto ALL of the afore! "Here's To MARY WILSON" and our lives with her have been SUPREME! THIS is SUPREME! CLASS of its own! The sound is weird compared to the original, but it is one of the best online of Mommy! I LOVE You, Mary! Ceej
That was great, Mary! Warm, grown, sexy and piognant! You sang this song I guess cause you've lived it. You'll always be my original Dream Girl! Stay up, honey! God's gonna bless you...
When Diana left The Supremes, she gave many interviews and in every one said that hopefully Mary would now get a chance to show off her gift and that she was an incredible talent. The fact that Mary remained unknown for the 7.5 years after Diana split shows it was the focus of the group, not the members, that kept Mary out of the limelight. When Mary went solo, she tried to be a disco queen and a rock star, settled into an oldies act instead of persuing her great natural gift as a chantuese.
Beloved, I am feelin' YOU 'REAL' STRONG! I agree and can vouch! Saw her there last time and DEFINITELY the SAME reaction! "Mas Que Nada"? (smile) Um BAH, UM BAH, UM *BAH*!!!!!!
I've always been a Ross fan and felt Mary Wilson was a so so background singer with limited talent. However, I must give credit where credit is due. This performance was EXCELLENT! Mary had me feeling this song. She should forget singing supremes songs and try jazz. Her smokey alto was dead on. Given the right material, this woman is fierce!
A Superb vocal performance from Mary Wilson. Her contralto is perfect for this material and her solo career should have gone in this direction(she always did the ballads best in their 1970's incarnations)-but in order to reach the masses-she has to sing the Supremes' songs, which are written for a high, soprano voice. Miss Wilson has grown so much over the years and she sounds wonderful here.
Nothing like Mary Wilson live. Mary is too cool. One time I had my picture taken with her and I said to the guy with the camera "Is my gut sticking out?" (just like a real hillbilly) and Mary said "Don't worry it'll crop you off at the chest." She was right and I'm not making this up....
Great performance of this song which I associate with the one and only inimitable Shirley Horn...Mary more than does it justice...she is definitely as great a talent as Diana Ross if not more...if she had started her career in the 60s as a jazz singer history might have been different
I love her here, but nothing can beat her years with THE SUPREMES.Mary Wilson,Florence Ballard, and Diana Ross. They were three swinging chicks that really rocked.I know things weren't all smooth but they were the biggest female group ever.
After listening to Ms Horne's and then Shirley Bassey's versions, I believe 'this' one is almost ver-batum more like Bassey's musically, than Ms Horne's....>But it IS the 'song' and the same key as both, and will always BE 'LIKE' them both in ways, but THIS one is VERY 'WILSON'!!!!!!!
wow, best singing Ive heard from solo Mary. I agree, she should stop trying to be diana ross redone when singing oldies by the supremes and concentrate on a whole new mary wilson career. maybe she could pick some old supremes album tracks that are not so identified with ross and would suit her new singing style. THIS mary wilson I would pay club money to hear. Msongs
She really should have gone into jazz after the Supremes. Her voice has always had that smokey-jazz sound to it. I don't know who was responsible for the ill-fated Supremes Reunion Tour, but if it was true that Diana Ross was getting $4-million and Mary and Cindy Birdsong were only offered $1-million, Ross should have insisted on a third each. And then let them do some of the lead vocals, if that was the reason for more money. That would've been the reunion of the century!
You can tell that if Gordy had exposed Wilson to Shirley Horn and Sarah Vaughan (and other great altos) and worked with her early on, she could have entered the jazz scene and had an entirely different career.
I always thought Mary had a voice better suited for jazz. She wasted too many years trying to be a pop star. I think had she pursued jazz her post-Supremes career would have gone further.
I don't really think this is the identical Horne arrangement. The chord changes are different, the timing is different, the phrasing is different, and the accents are ...... different. More 'lush' and more sophisticated. More....SUPREME. The vocal is definitely 'not' *like* Horne's, or even that similar to me. They're both GREAT tho'! But 'THIS' one's "consumate" in my opinion.
AGREE!!!
Couldn't have said it better. The race isn't to the swift or strong, but to SHE who can endureth! Amen?
Mary Wilson is my hero. This performance is stellar. She's beautiful inside and out, she's positive and content and she deserves all the Success in the world. LOVE YOU MARY!
wow, i really never got a chance to focus on her...very professional, graceful..
She absolutely tore that up! Bravo Mary Wilson !!!
I could not tear my eyes away from the screen. This is stunning to me. Lord knows she has been in the business long enough to sell and song, and this performance is proof!
Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. Here's to Mary Wilson!
Beautiful lady... terrific voice full of emotion... I couldn't help the watery eyes listening to this.
God bless you, Mary Wilson.
Astounding. I hardly know what to say, except keep
it going in this direction. The Supremes were then,
this now. This performance was perfection!
Have to agree with MarvD , the "Up close" CD is excellent. Mary sounds amazing on this live CD.
She deserves more recognition than she gets.
I love a fighter who believes in themselves. She was such an inspiration!
Mary Is so beautiful. Wow such heartfelt emotion.....................A Diva
I just saw Mary Wilson in concert. She was Exquisite... Simply Exquisite.......A Lady SUPREME.
Thank you, Mary, for the beautiful memories!
I wish Mary would do more of this genre of music, it is so much more tailored to her voice than Supremes songs. She sounds and looks great here.
Bravo Diva! Mary has never sounded better. Her sultry voice is perfect for moody torch songs and Ballard's like this. I'm so sorry Mary's no longer with us, but at least we have videos and recordings to remember her by. Rest In Peace Queen! Touch.
Incredible talent from the Great Beauty !
The attractive and talented Mary Wilson does it again. She is a Supreme gift. She continues to grace the stage and I will always love her.
Mike
bless you Miss Mary Wilson......you are a sweetheart.....
I love Mary dearly. Just feel bad that several of her fans did not live enough to hear this song. It is beautiful. I just think of them when I hear the song. GO MARY!!!!!!
oh my she sounds wonderful
UNREAL!!!!! a totally "supreme" rendition!. what a great talent that never fully got her due. Simply beautiful.

Great performance Mary!! May you RIP!!
Here's to MARY WILSON at her Best!
Legend
This is the Mary Wilson I always knew existed. Mary gets better each year vocally. This is the direction Mary needed to go in the first place.
Stunning and sublime, Mary's shows are always entertaining, and diverse.
She is also a very personable performer, and the ultimate survivor.
MISS MARY just TURNED IT OUT. WOW!!!!!!!
RIP fine lady.
Well put my friend!! Mary has such a jazz voice. This type of music suits mary wilson..she sounded great!!!

Mary Wilson is awesome! Never heard a Supreme sound so good. Thanks!
Looks gorgeous, sounds gorgeous, is prepared, is focused, is deep into the song, a singing actress. In other words, a star.
For those who didn't see "Mary Wilson's At The Copa" she's back by popular demand from June 22, 2011 to July 03, 2011 at "The Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas Nevada."
Mary, our appointed United States Cultural Ambassador has a show that's part of her world wide tour that represents around the globe our art & culture!
Mary Wilson THE QUINTESSENTIAL SUPREME!
I saw Mary Wilson perform tonight at the Sunset Junction
in Los Angeles and she did this song as an encore. It was awesome!
Her voice has improved with age, deeper and richer.
OH MY GOD, I've NEVER heard Mary sound this good!! This is her range, her style and element. I hope she stays with this type of song and delivery, because this type of singing might actually give her the fame she's been so desperately seeking for the past several decades.
That voice and interpretation are dead-on! Bravo!
beautiful song, Mary Wilson.... good job
Sing MARY !!!!!!!
Mary is always SUPREME
Superb! She's come a long way from The Supremes! This is pure class. Thanks so much. I've really enjoyed this. John from Motown

Mary Wilson has a beautiful contralto voice. This is the best version of this song that I have ever heard. She sings it with a lot of depth and meaning.

She's definitely more than a backing singer. A true contralto she gave the Supremes depth. It's great that she sings solo. What a waste otherwise.
Grammy material.
I LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! this song!! liz Wright also did a great rendition of this.
That was great, Mary! Warm, grown, sexy and piognant! You sang this song I guess cause you've lived it. You'll always be my original Dream Girl! Stay up, honey! God's gonna bless you...

Although she takes more than a few liberties with Shirley Horn's version, this is the perfect combination of music, lyric, and artist. Beautiful.
Amazing! Mary that was really really great! Think you'll go on tour with Cindy? As a duet?
WOW!!!!
Beloved, I am feelin' YOU 'REAL' STRONG! I agree and can vouch! Saw her there last time and DEFINITELY the SAME reaction! "Mas Que Nada"? (smile) Um BAH, UM BAH, UM *BAH*!!!!!!

I agree ,Jazz would have been natural for Mary...maybe she can still go there...Love Mary
Her voice is well suited for bluesy music and even jazz.
Great performance of this song which I associate with the one and only inimitable Shirley Horn...Mary more than does it justice...she is definitely as great a talent as Diana Ross if not more...if she had started her career in the 60s as a jazz singer history might have been different
She is awesome.Berry Gordy shoulda let all o'them lead songs instead of jes Diana Ross.

Florence LaRue of the 5th Dimension has added this song to her one woman show and says it is her favorite song of all time.
This is a personal favorite, but what happens at 5:33 is a crime...can someone fix that or repost a version that doesn't f-up at the end?
MARY! KEEP YOUR DREAM ALIVE! YOU SOUND GREAT! JAZZ CD would be great! Maybe, you first GRAMMY Award.....before DIANA
