- Car & Driver released an article on a 2025 Camaro Z/28. Today we talk about why that will not happen for a street-legal vehicle and the possibility of GM launching a new Program like a COPO setup to remain relevant for the motorsport programs they participate in for Camaro.

I’ve always looked at the ZL1 1LE as the, “Z28” of the 6th gen, just with forced induction and under a different name. That car is so hardcore and insane performance wise, that I don’t see how GM could go further beyond that with a true Z28 model without spending a TON of money on development, which they likely won’t do at this point.
I’d love to be proven wrong, though! I just think that, as it stands, the ZLE is our ultimate Camaro.
A high-power N/A motor with a bit more aero and stripped-out interior would be enough to push it beyond the current 1LE. But, like you, I do not see this happening.
@@Lethalgarage Yeah, and if it hypothetically did, it’d probably be so limited and so expensive, that no one but the upper echelon of customers would be able to buy one.
@danieldickerson4838 the real problem with that is that it would end up competing directly with the variants of the C8 which is the baby of GM.
I got tired of trying to order the zl1 1le and just bought a used one with 4300 miles on it. Looks brand new and I am happy. Life is great!
Awesome! Glad you got one.
Nothing wrong with that,
Congrats on the vehicle
Whaaat where did you try to order? I tried where I lived they ignored me and walked away so I called around and a dealership had allocation I ordered feb 6 so maybe I’ll get it in august or something I hope?
I think an naturally aspirated LT2 with ported heads larger displacement making 550 to 600 HP would be sick! On a SS 1LE Platform.
We need an "iroc-z"
Hmmm I wonder since IROC folded in 2006 this might keep this from being an option...
Rick lp they already have a iroc-z camaro out already
I think they would make a IROC appearance package if anything. Special colors, wheels and decals etc.
Rick lp they already have build a new iroc z camaro
@marcojordan7175 are you talking about the 6LE Iroc? I think he means an actual GM iroc
I wish GM would just put the "Blackwing Motor" 680hp in the Last Specialty Camaro... Called it Z/28 or whatever.
A Z/28 would probably use the LT2 not the LT6.
LT6 hopefully
Agreed. I also heard the GM engineers seemed to indicate that the LT6 does not properly fit into the alpha chassis.
Why would they put a less powerful engine in the 6th gen z28 over the 5th gen?
@@joshuagorman7856 why do you think a z28 is about the power? It’s a track racing car, high revs and light weight are all they care about.
GM already stated 2024 was the last model year of the Camaro so why would anybody believe there would be a 2025 Z28 ??
I'm Marco Jordan i believe a 2025 camaro Z28 is coming
I'm Marco Jordan i believe a 2025 camaro Z28 is coming
Thank you Matt for your comments on the Z28 Car and Driver article. You are more than a "Joe Blow" speaking on GM/Chevrolet Camaro issues. Keep up your Lethal Garage channel we who own Camaros of all 6 generations appreciate you So Cal brother. Commenting from East TN and own a black 2017 1SS and in the 1970's sold a green 1968 327 V8 Camaro before joining the USAF.
Thank you!
I would love to own a camaro one day, but I am poor and from the UK so very unlikely
A Camaro Z/28, I can see it happening. Ford did the Mustang Mach 1 HP, it's time for GM to do something similar. This would definitely be a direct hit to the Dark Horse (which is trash).
GM could easily take a 1SS and put the ZL1 1LE's aero package, DSSVs, wheels/tires, lighter rear window, non-folding rear seat, manual passenger seat from a 1LS, etc to make a sub-$50k lightweight NA Z/28.
Z/28 has to be streetcar
Companies have done that, ending regular production and releasing a series of one off special production cars to finish off chassis or parts. Dodge is currently doing that with the challenger/ charger.
If GM would make the Camaro look like the 70s Z28 or the 80s IROC Z I would have bought one in a heartbeat! I never liked the 60s style it’s based on.
@@josemontano7767 it makes more sense from a nostalgia prospective to use the first one. My favourite looking though is the second gen, especially the 70’.
I agree, the C&D article is a fluff piece. Among other things , the rendering is totally wrong. It's got the face of the 2019 refresh that didn't go over well.
There is no 2025. 2024 is the last year and only a hand full will be made in January 2024 so they can officially be called a ‘24 model year.
i'm glad you said that pre-existing orders (older than dirt lol) are still probably ok. my ZL1 1LE order has been in since JANUARY 2022 and i'm STIL WAITING. i'd better not get passed up!
How are they even gonna bring back the Camaro when sales for that model were down that’s what did the Camaro in
I think there will be a 7th generation Camaro that will be complete redesign. And everyone knows Marry Berra has been brainwashed to be 100 % Gung ho on electrics. So I believe it will be a total electric version geared to targeting the performance market. Not sure if that can be a winning strategy but that's where I think it is headed.
I agree with you Matt it’s a pipe dream GM is lagging on production everything is all screwed up these days. What happened to a time when you wanted a car if you had the money you got a car 😢🤬
To add 2 hp over the lt4 ?
It would be kickass
I could never order a car from a dealer and wait months for it. Most I would do is travel the country for the specific trim I want to be honest. Saves me time
That's what I did when I bought my 16 2SS in 2018. Drove to N.Carolina to buy one like I would have ordered it, only had 4700 miles on it, and someone else took the depreciation hit
They also have a profile for a 2025 camaro suv. Car and driver just release some bullshit bait article. GM is struggling to fill orders for 2023s there's no way they are going to do a special edition like a z28. They are gonna have a special color and some badging for 2024. That's it.
GM will never build a car that out performs the Z06 or ZR1 C7 or C8, but they have admitted that the C8 Z06 is not as a hard core track car as the ZL1/1LE.
The article printed before GM announcement. They removed it from their site.
Thanks for your insight, love the honest opinion with out extra fluff. Mary Barra would probably have none of anything special. I can’t believe Car and Driver would have an article like that. Nice Cleetus shirt!
a z28 with the facelift, all the aero you could ask for, and a LT6 that sounds just like the z06 would be the dream. i just love the idea of that exhaust note coming out of a camaro. but i think the closest thing we have to a true z/28 is a modded ss 1le with an all motor set up (including of course cam and LTHs to sound really nasty)
Yes, good luck ever getting a car built. My local dealer has just ONE car, ie: non-suv on their lot (A Malibu) Everything else is trucks and Trailblazers and one Traverse.
I also think electric cars are just a phase it'll just be another option there is no way i c e cars are going to leave the market
Cool I may order one
LOVE to be wrong, but definitely do NOT seeing this happening...AT all. 😕😕
I'd love a 5th gen z28! But a newer one would be nice too! Chevy always has something up their sleeve remember when they told us no more camaro in 2002 then what happened in 2010 😮 I don't believe the camaro is done I just believe they are trying to figure out their place in a world of 500 hp NA mustangs and 1000 hp hellcats 😅
It’s not going to happen this late in the closing saga of the 6 Gen. Not a chance.
The best idea is to put a Detuned version of LT5 on ZL1 with 700 HP , if they don’t want to put LT5 or LT6 on this upcoming model which engine is left on their hands ?
LT5 stopped production awhile ago. Rumor has it they don't have many laying around.
They would have to heavily revamp the front of the ZL1 for the LT5 to fit. That engine is massive and super tall, so it just physically wouldn’t fit underneath the current ZL1 without some modification.
My bet is the next Corvette ZL1 will be the Zo6 5.5 with a hybrid drive front end like the E-Ray making it awd with about 1000hp..
We are already friends! 🤝
ONLY Z/28 id want that makes sense is if they gave use the Z06 flat plane V8.
I’d get one
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I DO KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE. I AM A DIE-HARD Z28 FAN AS WELL. I WOULD LOVE TO BUY AN OLDER ONE. AND TUEN IT INTO A RESTOMAD.
They should just use the L8T rotating assembly and stick it in an aluminum block. With higher compression and a better cam than the trucks. That could make a z28 using their parts bin.
Oh I hope this is true. It would be a great send-off.
I think its alot of fluff as well but if you guys will indulge me i could see this maybe happening?
There is not a market for 4 camaro variants and a vette..... however there could be a market for a Vette and Slightly toned down street legal Z28 to compete with a dark horse..... i still say GM will not just hand the market over to Ford !
GM will not commit the resources nessesary to build a Z/28, they would lose money. If they had a 2025 Camaro in the works... maybe
I already can't afford it .... bummer ...
It would be nice if it came with the LT6 5.5L
Camaro community = Camaroverse
I like that
They should make a 4x4 rally car off-roading camaro
Please GM make a 2025 camaro Z/28 LT5 supercharged corvette engine with 850hp
Wasn't it C&D stating that a V8 Corvette SUV was going to debut later this year? I mean we haven't seen any mules running around for that. Unless they are going the current gen Ford GT route. Where they kept everything hush among a specific group of people. It would be amazing. But I dont I highly doubt it will happen.
Addition:
Now on the hypothetical part. Honestly they should make a cheaper lighter version of the RMR layout. It doesn't need to be called a Camaro. But something to place below the Corvette but replace the Camaro. The C8 platform is working on becoming the best selling Corvette in history. If supply chains weren't a problem. I'm pretty sure the C8 would have done so already. It's obvious people are attracted to the mid engine design. Just look at the current sales between the C8 and the Gen 6 Camaro. Despite the price differences the Corvette is outselling the Camaro. Make a similar price Camaro replacement, put the 5.3 V8 as it's only engine. Then make different versions of it. Have a base model, have a GT version, then have a track version. Hell a cool name would be the Wildcat name from Buick. Make it weigh around 3200 to 3300 lbs, costing around $30k to $42k. Even at 383 HP and 3200 lbs, it still has a worse power to weight ratio. Than the C8 with the LT2.
That could be the start of the Corvette brand. Add in the supposed SUV version and bam you got yourself a sporty vehicle for each type of buyer. You got a Cayman fighter, a 911 fighter and a Cayenne fighter. All that's really left is a Panamera fighter. Which is essentially the CT5.
They were right about the Z06
I’ve been asking myself what will happen in NASCAR and with V8 Supercars in Australia. It seems rare that they’d spend $$$$ developing the Camaro race car for Australia as well as the Next Gen NASCAR just to race for 2 years.
And because of the markups I won’t be able to own one
The 2nd 4th an 5th Gen MARO's are my favorite! 💪🚗💨💨👏👌😎
Buy a nice used 5th or 6th gen do with it as you please you"ll be much more satisfied with the results than waiting for GM to invest any time or money into a car that's not going to be sticking around for any length of time it's not happening buy a nice used one buy a performance crate engine and set it up the way you want with the mods you want while l much prefer the Camaro over a Mustang Ford has more love for their Mustang than GM does for the Camaro and GM has not answered Fords naturally aspirated Mach 1 or Black Horse Mustang models with any competition what so ever is a complete and total disappointment all that would be needed is a 550 horsepower version of the LT2 with a high petfomance cam + heads that can turn 7200rpm instead we got nothing
It definitely coming and explains why there’s no 2024 1LE in the collector editions
Yeah… I don’t agree
Gm is prob waiting to see how the new mustang is going to go I don't know why they wouldn't just roll into the 7th gen
Hopefully it happen
What will the flex fuel kit do for my ZL1?
Allow you to run 50% mix if e85, which in turn will get you more power.
They can't build cars people ordered months ago. Silly to come out with a new trim that people won't be able to get either. LOL
Needs more space in the interior
Sadly GM never addressed the reason the current Camaro didn't sell ! Everyone I know said about the same thing of feeling they were in a bath tub and poor vision for the driver ! The chopped top look didn't sit well with buyers, proven fact !
August - Sept. 2020 I wanted to buy a Camaro SS2 until i drove one, then I bought a Challenger Scat Pack and never looked back.
I feel like I’m the only person that believes the LT6 does not belong in a camaro. The lt6 sounds way too supercar (Italian) and not enough muscle to be put in a muscle or “pony” car like the camaro. Me personally “muscle” car is a car that’s throaty, aggressive, deep, low pitched growling sounding kind of car if that makes any sense. The LT6 just sounds like a normal Italian super car to me.
Have you seen the new FastX?? For a few seconds you could see a black Camaro (scene on the bridge). Maybe the NEW one we're all waiting for!?
this article makes no sense, and it has the 2019 black bumper front end. How could Car and Driver do something so bone headed?!
I'm glad they didn't make the zl1 1le a z28 because in my opinion it just doesn't look like one. I think the z28 should be wider
He pissed all over my hopes and dreams and yet I subscribed anyway
🙏🏻
I know this comment isn’t related to the video but I’m in need of help, my 21 Camaro ss just died with a brand new battery and starter. I’m thinking it might be the alternator but I was also having some ESC codes and misfiring could spark plugs or could be a issue also?
Probably a grounding issue.
@@Lethalgarage Also forgot to mention I bought the battery yesterday and it died today when I was driving, was able to jump it and run it down to where I live and it died as soon as I pulled into my driveway
@@venomoushq8061 just because it’s new battery doesn’t mean it was fully charged. Also, could be an alternator issue.
If they did build a Z/28, it should have the n/a 5.5L flat plane from the Z/06.
I think the new comaro will be the comaro shown on the last transform movie in England
I'll be happy with the 1ss as long as they selling for cheap
I would love to see a 2SS with the new 632. Then the ZL1 1LE gets the 632 with a blower on it. Something like that needs to happen. I just wish GM would actually pull all the stops and make the ultimate all the way around from the RS up to the ZR1 1LE. If this is going to be it for Camaro, gas engine, or whatever the case is going to be, then let it go out with a bang! Like it deserves to! Dodge did it, so is that why GM and Ford (to my knowledge) haven't? What do I know tho? I'm just a customer/owner. No one important to GM. That's for sure. It seems like none of us every day Joe's and Jane's opinions seem to matter to any auto manufacturers. Unless you go to the dark side and switch to Mopar. 🤮 that made me puke a little just typing it. I'd rather not buy a car that I had to worry about it being easily stolen for 1.
That is like putting a lead boat anchor in the camaro, it would not be for road course use LOLOL.. The 632 is huge big block chevy and is not what you want for road racing.. Its a drag-burnout old school swap motor. The current LT4 is only a bit over 400lbs.. and the 632 is over 700lbs.. Doesn't make any sense..
If they were actually gonna do it, it would be the 5.5 liter flat plane C8 Z06 motor.. that makes 670 or something like that..
@Clutch_Kick187 I actually realize that road racing you are correct. Drag racing hower.. The point I was making was that I wish that they would do a proper farewell and do something bonkers and was just using that as an example.
it will happen
If it was going to happen, there would be test mules out there to stir up hype. Wish it were true. Be nice to have a 6th Gen Z along my 5th Gen Z.
Gm ruined everything with camaro when they went retro and had so many options for 2 different v6 cars. So many options that it confused people. They should have kept it old school. Keeping the rs , z28, and ss and then added the zl1.
can’t stand the last couple years GM is pushing the LT1 a lot more instead of the SS model.
Could there be a 7th gen? Here's what I wish for... GM decides to spin off Corvette into a separate brand. The lineup includes an SUV that mimics the C8, a fully electric C8 and, wait for it, a 7th generation Camaro!!! While we're at it, let's assume (or wish) it's been in development for the past three years. It will all be ready for the 2025 model year! Am I crazy? Stranger things could happen.
This is what I’ve been telling my friends. I don’t think we’re not on to something
I wish they would continue to make gas muscle cars they still have lots of muscle cars that need to come out and be remade
GM isn't going to spend a bunch of money to build a Z28 for one year. There would be no return on investment for them. Unfortunately they are full speed ahead on EV's. Also, I own a gen 5 Z28, so I hope they don't offer one :)
I really hope this is true
I think they will...give us an upgraded version of the 2015 Z 28 engine an I'll gladly trade my 2023 SS in!!!
Please let this be true
A little off the subject. When are you going do some videos on racing your gen 6. I miss seeing you and your gen 6.
Those will be back
Dude I’m so tired of the build up on rumors then the Hugh let down everytime, gm doesn’t care about camaro customers! They only care about corvette’s and camaro will always take back seat to that!
Pretty sure I did no building up here.
You always do a great job sir and you have been here every step of the way! I’m talking about gm and their inability to do the right thing for their customer base is all! As always I look forward to your take on it and it’s always food for thought! I appreciate your candor everytime sir and I appreciate the fact you are a camaro guy since the beginning! Thanks brother !!!
It would be nice if it was true left the Camaro go out with a bang.
Kind of funny but this car the Z28 is popping up on the internet, just remember that the GTD was just released by Ford, it probably has something to do with GM's decision to release a 2025 Z28 Camaro. I wonder what the technology is going to be uses on this. Is it going to have DRS because this is shaping up to be like a racecar type thing and the Porsche GT3 GT2 RS and the Mustang GTD has active Aero DRS technology
F Yeah!
Dude I have had an order in since June . So I sure hope they don’t make another car they can’t deliver .
I don’t think it would take much to make a z28 especially on 6th gen ss 1le platform some simple things todo are lt2 maybe bored and stroked to a 7L to keep some heritage or do cam valves and lifters to get it to rev 7000 rpm reliably and make about 525~Hp. Some other things like carbon ceramic brakes off the new zo6 even a transaxle off the c7 zo6 take out some of the weighty stuff or even carbon fiber panels definitely cost as much as a zl1 maybe even a zl1 1le but yet again this is up to gm or some tuner company.
As an engineer that currently works for GM and worked on the 6th gen camaro. I can confirm that Z/28 is coming. Although it will look much different than the depiction.
lol it better not be electric.
I feel the reason they haven’t gave us future plans is be use of how they did it when they stopped in 2002. In 2010 just 2 years after transformers they realized the 5th gen and sold record numbers. All they have to do is wait a few years and let anticipation build for their 7th gen!
It was a bit more than that. Transformers helped propel the Camaro nameplate back into focus. Without it, the platform would have failed.
GM will retool the Lansing plant to make the Corvette E-Ray due to the fact that the Bowling Green plant can't keep up with the demands for ZO6.
Not even doing a full year run on a 24. Why would they do a 25 lol fake
The article is definitely bologna. Although, has anyone heard any updates on their development on the VSS-R platform? I feel like that would be a perfect platform for a 7th Gen.
I thought they stopped development of those when they announced that they were pushing for more electric vehicles. Granted with the recent investment into future V8's maybe they might do something with those platforms.
How much is a mint 2015 Z28 Camaro with 1600 miles worth?
I have one!
2015’s don’t fetch what a low 200 mile 2014 will. But have seen 2014’s 200 miles are less getting close to $90k. 2015’s with 2k miles are in the $50k range
For them to go all out with a blower and call it Yenko.
Ill upgrade my 18 2SS for a fraction of the cost. GM is pathetic. CAMARO deserves so much more RESPECT thN GM has shown it the last few years. I dont know what happened but GM has just lost its balls. Not all of us want a Corvette for one that you can't get or afford for that matter. SAD FOR SURE.
So if NASCAR loses the camaro what will replace it?
I would love it but it’s definitely not happening. It’s called wishful thinking
Sad. I was hopeful for the 2025 and was holding out to purchase this car.
A Camaro with the LT6 anyone? I would be down for that.
