yup, i majored in metalsmithing/jewelry making in college and we had a separate pickle bath for copper and one for silver. if you placed silver into the copper bath, your silver would turn copper color. i think the term for this is electroplating? not 100% sure it's been several years since then but yeah. silver is much cheaper than gold, but still not that cheap for a college student so you had to be real careful and pay attention to which pickle you were using. otherwise it would be a very expensive mistake

I wouldn't say that "most" intermetallic compounds are brittle; look at bronze or brass... There is also steel + uranium, that is used as tank armor in the Abrams tank... Maybe not the healthiest compound to be around, but ..

You would have to do an inquartation step beforehand in order for the acid to dissolve all the way through. By reducing the gold to around 25% to prevent the gold from blocking the penetrating power of the acid.

That said, purple gold has poor resale value compared to 18k rose or yellow gold as aluminium will cause embrittlement issues during gold melt and recovery process
KOH isn't the only thing that'll work. NaOH, HCl, HNO3, etc. Anything that will dissolve Al but not Au will work. This process is known as depletion gilding.
It is which is why it's so easily separated. Just because it's inert doesn't mean it can't be made to bond with other elements though it just doesn't really happen naturally.

You can still make alloys with it, the gold you find jewellery is usually 18 karat or less meaning it's 75% or less pure gold, pure gold is too soft or ductile to make practical jewellery so they mix in nickel, copper, silver to make an alloy that's more physically robust. The gold hasn't chemically bonded with the other metals because as you point out it's chemically very inert (although it is possible to get it to react) this 'purple gold' is an alloy, a good way to think of an alloy is as a solid solution, just as you'll find H2O and NaCl molecules in a saline solution neither of which are chemically bonded then you find different atoms of metals in an alloy like Au and Al in purple gold (or Au /Ag/Cu /Ni in more conventional gold alloys) that aren't chemically bonded.... this is in effect a solid solution where gold is solvent and aluminium the solute

Aluminium does tarnish. Most copper things we handle are tarnished, so less smell- brass is more commonly handled, so less tarnish meaning more reaction from the acids in our skin upon contact. Older LPG pump handles at fuel stations are brass, and always make my hands stink when theyre slightly sweaty at least. These days the pump handles are all aluminium except the threaded fitting so no more servo stink. I've never noticed my hands smell after stripping clean copper wire though. As for coins- no modern coins are pure copper, so the smell may be from alloyed metals only.
