  • Learn the key to making huge gorgeous borax crystals out of a supersaturated solution on this Emmymade How-to.
    Borax crystals
    1- 2 C. borax
    ~1 L. water
    bamboo skewer
    thread
    white pipe cleaners
    food coloring
    Weave three (3) pipe cleaners into a loose coil. Suspend the coil from a length of thread, and then attach it to the bamboo skewer so that the coils hangs in the middle of the container without touching the sides or the bottom. Make your solution in a pot or heat-proof beaker. Heat your water and add borax a little at a time. Stir constantly and keep adding borax until it no longer dissolves. The solution will be cloudy and some borax will settle. Add your food coloring (20-30 drops.) Suspend your pipe cleaner in the hot solution and cover with a piece of cardboard. Allow it to sit undisturbed for 8-12 hours. Pull out your crystal and dry with a paper towel.

    I realize that this video is a bit old, but to anyone trying this out in there home and especially around children: cover the finish product in clear nail polish. It will create a protective barrier so the crystals don't dissolve due to water vapor in the air, and it will prevent unwanted ingestion of borax by your kids.

    Ok to help answer alot of the questions here. You ONLY heat the water until it starts to boil. Then remove it from heat and add your borax a spoon full at a time while constantly stirring until no more will dissolve ( it will start to sit at the bottom no matter how much you stir). Then you add your pipe cleaners ( or what ever you use) suspended from a string. Then cover it with something to keep dust out and let it sit on the counter, table, etc. for 5-12 hours. You should see crystals start to grow after 3 hours but they will get bigger if you let them sit longer. I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion. I have tried this same method and it works great for making crystals.

    Nice video. Here are my suggestions:
    - don't use rope, let crystals form on the ground of the container, then take all crystals out, select the most beautiful one, hang it on a thin fishing ripe. Meanwhile, let the borax solution run through a regular coffee filter, to get any and all tiniest rystals out, then pour bnack that solution into a container. hang the selected crystal into it for a day, or ttwo - and you will see that that one crystal starts to grow to a truly majestic size as long as you keep it in a saturated solution.
    - When finish, dry the crystal, and add a layer of transparent nail polish to its surface - this will protect the crystal from air-based dehydration and crumbling.
    - Finally, try many more colors!

      @Cookies and Cream what kind of resin is it, because if it's something like resin casting or acrylic resin then sure but anything else I would advise to possibly just use nail polish because there might be a chance that it could dissolve the crystal.

      Stine Kirkeby the thing is, Borax is not that bad. The Pharmalobby has banned it for being bad, because you can cure a lot of things with borax when having a Bor deficiency in your body. It is true, that by eating 2 spoons of it daily, you can get ill by it, but to be real, who the hell is going to eat that?

    • @kielia727
      @kielia727 9 лет назад

      Stine Kirkeby Is it Boric Acid or Sodium Borate that is banned? They are not the same chemically. These crystals are made from Sodium Borate. Borax or Sodium Borate has the same safety rating as baking soda and salt. I still would not allow a child to chew on these crystals any more than I would allow them to dip their fingers into washing detergent and then put their hands in their mouths. I would not allow them to drink from a bottle of vinegar or eat a box of salt either. Guess I am mean. LOL!

We made a ton of these in all different colors and shapes and set them, along with some actual fossils and rocks he had collected into 5 gallons of clear marine resin and lit it from underneath to make the built-in desk top in his old room. He loved it and did a lot of homework and art projects gazing at borax crystals.

    Fun fact: crystals are formed when a substance cools very rapidly, and is not given the time to harden properly, this results in an incredibly strong material, btw raw stones (they ARE rocks) are almost completely worthless, in fact there are so many diamonds in warehouses that if they were all released at once into the market, you could buy a 200 karat diamond for about $15 USD

      Crystals form when lava cools very very slowly, if lava cools extremely quickly then it will form glass, anything in between can result in in anything from fine grain rocks to rocks with large crystal lumps within it.

    Since the kids were tiny, I have always tried to foster in them a sense of creativity that can then be used to make meaningful gifts for loved ones. My daughter is now 15, and my son is 11, and we have been making homemade gifts every Christmas. It makes them so happy when they see family and friends cherish the things they've made :-)
    Anyway, just wanted to tell you that your videos are creative and charming. You seem like a lovely person as well. I only wish we'd have found your channel sooner.

    for accuracy in chemistry they are actually BORON crystals. 20 mule team BORAX is a product name but the product itself is boron broken down to a powder consistency and fragrance. If you are doing this as a home schooling project for art it probably doesn't matter what you call them - but if you are trying to teach chemistry, solution saturation, crystalline structure and/or growth, you may want to be accurate in your chemical name.

    • @dianehoward6608
      @dianehoward6608 8 лет назад +1

      Alanis Sophia the pipe cleaners give the borax something to hold on to. I find borax in the laundry department at WalMart and other supermarkets. If you are not in America, google Borax to find out what it might be called in your country.

    What if i grow my crystals like you did and then put it in a new saturated solution of borax? Will it grow bigger? More massive.... y'know. I want to make a present for a friend

    • @evansandthistle5356
      @evansandthistle5356 7 лет назад

      The crystal only absorbs the maximum capacity of the borax in the water. So if you wanted to you could take a huge plastic container and, doing the math, find a ratio the same as the one in the video of water to borax.

    • @1Ophelia18
      @1Ophelia18 7 лет назад +4

      I think it will grow bigger, but the construction made of pipe cleaners should be bigger too… cos that's what holds it together… It will grow bigger the more you keep it in the solution.. but the question is how hard those crystals are… what if it can be easily destroyed, too fragile…You should try to see the result...

    • @ayushipatel8063

      I made these crystals before. The bigger they get, the more you put them in the solution, the easier they'll break. I suggest doing this only 2 times.

  • @Cantabile

    • @T-DsGaming
      @T-DsGaming 7 лет назад +3

      No it will only produce crystals equal to the amount of borax dissolved in the water.

    • @gilliantate23
      @gilliantate23 7 лет назад +2

      Aemort if you leave it longer, the crystals will get bigger

    • @T-DsGaming
      @T-DsGaming 7 лет назад +8

      Gillian Samul
      No it will not, it will only grow as big as the amount of borax dissolved in the water. You can however make a new batch and put the crystals back in to make them bigger.

    • @nuggetsmaniii9626

      i believe how all these work is that they cool and it can no longer hold the borax, so it attahes itself to things inside, such as, more borax or the cleaners, forming them.
