Turning pennies gold

  • For this video, I'm gonna try turning this penny into gold, which is something that I've always wanted to do.
    Procedure:
    1) Wash penny with vinegar and salt
    2) Drop it into 3M NaOH (12g NaOH in 100mL water) + zinc metal
    3) Dry it, put it on a hot plate, and turn on the heat
    4) Gold
Unfortunately though, even it really looks like it, it isn't real gold. It's actually brass, and it formed because the heat caused the zinc coating, to combine with the copper in the penny.

I remember doing this in 9th grade chemistry, it was pretty fun, I turned a 1980s Canadian penny into brass, I also tried a 5 Euro cent, and it half turned, almost a rose gold color, I think because there wasn't enough copper, or I didn't put it in for long enough.

    Fun exercise:
You put a copper coin in a basic solution of Zn, but since it is in solution, it should react with Zn(2+) ions and forms metallic Zn on the surface in some RedOx reaction.... So where do the electrons come from?
Think about it, I think it is not too obvious.
Spoilers ahead, stop reading now if you dont want tips!!!
    Tip1:
The coins are not pure copper
    Tip2:
Through metallic bonds, electrons can move freely
    Tip3:
The RedOx potential of the 3 different metals involved is inequivalent
    Tip4:
The "copper" coins mostly contain a much cheaper, common metal, that is probably mostly known for construction

In high school back in the '80s we processed all of our own B&W photos. The third of three chemical trays we put the prints through was called stop bath, a solution that leached leftover silver from the photographic paper. We'd drop pennies into it -- no need to clean them first -- and in a few minutes remove them after they turned completely silver.
Remember the steel pennies of 1943? There were a few dozen copper pennies mistakenly made that year, pennies even then worth a small fortune. Well, in 1944 a similar number of steel pennies were mistakenly struck. These 1944 steel pennies were just as rare although lesser known, except to collectors.
See where I'm going with this? My brother and I, both amateur coin collectors, picked out the common 1944 copper pennies from our sets and dropped them into the fixer to silver plate them. After, they were virtually indistinguishable from a rare and extremely valuable 1944 steel penny. That is, except for anyone with a magnet.

The Liberty head or “V” nickel was released in 1883. The denomination was marked by a large “V” on the reverse; the word “cents” was nowhere to be found. Josh Tatum, a deaf-mute in Boston, found a way to capitalize on the new and unfamiliar design. He asked a second-hand jeweler to plate 1,000 of the new nickels in gold. The design was similar enough to that of the $5 gold piece circulating at the time that he believed he could pass them off as such.
He succeeded. He would go to small stores and purchase a single five-cent cigar, then hand over one of his gold-plated nickels. Store owners would assume it was worth $5 and give him $4.95 back in change. He eventually had more plated and began making his way from Boston to New York. According to the legend, he made approximately $15,000 ($440,000 in today's money) this way before being arrested.

Great video. Just want to warn viewers:
*NEVER CLEAN OR DAMAGE A RARE OR VALUABLE COIN*
Cleaning removes a layer of metal from the surface of the coin, which can make it look more visually appealing (to someone who does not collect coins) but technically damages the coin. Never do anything that permanently alters a coin, such as this experiment, unless it is a very common issue, like a modern penny. Just wanted to educate, I still think this is really cool if you do it to the right coins/objects but it could ruin your day if you find out you cleaned away 90% of a rare coin's value.
Edit: Rinsing a coin off under normal temperature water and/or lightly wiping it off with a rag is fine on lower-grade coins as long as it doesn't get scratched.
