Hi. Guess what? "That woman" IS the trio. Yep, it's all me. Magic of green screen. Oh - and the guy in Mansa Musa and the guy in Mary Queen of Scots are Tahitian and Hawaiian, respectively :)
I've only watched half a dozen of these so far, but they're all brilliant and I'm looking forward to the rest! Not just fun parodies, but also accurate and informative!
here you go. I couldn't find it on the internet so I just typed along with the song. I checked it once and it seems to be correct. I translated the latin words which you can cut out if it makes the lyrics a bit confusing. If you'd like another one in typed form just respond and I'll do it since it doesn't take long to do. I,II,III,IV,V. Roman legion’s at your door and you can’t hide from the society and culture assimilate everything you got like a hungry vulture. They loved anything that’s Greek. They used concrete. Built it wide and deep. They made bridges, highways, statues so real. In every detail not like the Greek ideal. You know, when they built they used the arch, vault and dome. To build It big. ‘cause big is Rome. Roman law, code of justice. You can trust it’s the age of Augustus. Some poetry by Virgill, that’s what he did. His famous poem called the Aeneid. A little bit of duty was the theme. And faithfulness to Rome, that was his dream. Another poet, Horace, his friend indeed. He wrote of human weaknesses and greed. Historian Livy he did debut. His “history of Rome”, but it’s not all true. The Roman gods you know they gave a nod to the Greeks. ‘cause the names were the only things that changed. An emperor could be divine. Have his own temple and his own shrine. If you were a slave. You had to behave and you don’t start a fuss like that pesky Spartacus. The third and second centuries B.C. they showed their engineering expertise. They liked to wear a toga and a cloak. Appropriated from Etruscan folk. The aqueducts with running water gush. The citizens to the arenas rush to find a little respite from the stress. Only concerned with ”bread and circuses”. The “parterfamilias”(head of a Roman familly) he was boss. His children’s education, he paid the cost. His daughters he guarded just like a hound. Until they were 14 and husbands found. They wealthy lived in villas having fun. Out in the countryside, under the sun. The poor resided crammed under one roof. In “insulae”(cheap Roman appartment building) that were not fireproof. Caput mundi.(capital of the world) Senate run by the bourgeoisie. Government, law, and the Roman way. Still impacts or lives today.
I absolutely love how you guys do this. It helps me learn a lot more than taking notes in class. I'm more a music smart person so this is more helpful than notes or textbooks.
I was Rickrollin in the Roman Forum to Rick Astley's 'Together Forever' ... headphones really take you to another place when your dancing in the Roman Forum, or should I say Rickrollin'. Can't help myself, I guess the tourists get a kick out of it, especially when THEY don't hear the 'head phone ' music going on. I Rickrolled under the Eiffel Tower too. Never a dull moment when I go to Europe !
Again, awesome! Mr H's sound effects & backgrounds = incredible! He must have had to R&D & edit for a month! I love the moving line drawings of the Coliseum! I think he mixed things from a dozen films in there. And the wigs & dresses! Oooo Laa Laa! As well as the little dance, and the various cute looks on your face that reflect the words being sung! Then there is that silly Mona Lisa smile at the end. I guess the talents you all have make it look easy, but there must have been work!
This one is gotta be my favorite of all the history teachers songs 10/10 This is the kind of teaching we need in schools. How did I not find this sooner? I guess better late than never.
@TheXantippa YES! We've just recorded 8 new songs, and are working on editing about 5 videos now...We're still writing new ones and have an endless list of topics! Bear with us, as each takes a long time to produce.
I've watched only a fraction of these videos and they're all brilliant! I'm working on my own parody about Roman history, I hope it comes out as good as this!
@Cabkrub Because they were big blocks, separate building, and they would have appeared a little like islands. And I imagine that was all the more so for the people trapped inside them when they were ablaze.
Thank You for ALL your videos ! Enthusiastic teachers is what the world needs. Please make one on HYPATIA...The Peloponesian War and the Persian Wars of Greece. Also I would love to see one on Carthage. You should have a Nobel Prize.
These are awesome! :) I always like to think of what happens when we combine modern culture with ancient history, and it turns out just as awesome as I thought it would xD
Seriously? There is only one of you? Could have fooled me. I was talking to someone yesterday who had seen Beowulf but not Martin Luther and told her there were 3 ladies in all. I will put that right on Monday. BTW: Attila is a great song, I caught myself sing it in the car yesterday.
Building Rome Marilyn, the teacher, asked her 5th grade history class, "When was Rome built?" and called on Timothy to answer first. "Rome was built at night." was his answer. "At night?" asked Mrs. Taylor, holding her ruler firmly in her boney-knuckled hands. "How ever did you get such an idea?" "Well," gulped the student, hoping his answer would satisfy her, "everyone knows Rome wasn't built in a day." Betcha not even Mrs.B knew this about Rome! ;)
Ms Burvall, World History class, 8th grade, Monterrey, México, thanks you for inspiring students to learn while enjoying songs, History Teachers is the best.
Mr Herb Mahelona, (Google) a genius who makes the vids (he spends days editing) is a musician who can play any instrument, write music (operas), & has taught music/history. He's made a few appearances in some vids. He's written lyrics for several. Mrs Amy Burvall (Google),an amazing lady who sings/acts in all the vids, is only 1 person, whether you see 1,2,3,4 or more of her. She's written a number of the lyrics, too. They've a Facebook page: historyteacherz They tweet: @historyteacherz
And if you search SoundCloud for Amy Burvall,,,, you will find more songs. And for her as 3 Ladies, see: Thomas Aquinas ("Venus" by Bananarama), and be awed. And Mr.Herb Mahelona, the Hawaiian, filmed most of the videos, and wrote about half the songs.
She is A history Teacher, even when you see 3 of her. Google Amy Burvall. See also sound cloud. For the Story, search You tube for: EDxHONOLULU - Amy Burvall & Herb Mahelona - What I Learned from Napoleon and MTV
Gauis Nero Germanicus (aka Nero) would be a good one also. Nero wasn't always 'Nero' till his mother Agrippina (Agri-pea-na) the younger groomed him for a fight with his step-brother Brittanicus for emperor. I did an argumentative report for my college history class.
Well, SHE is WAY more than a trio. Go see the Martin Luther or the Thomas Aquinas videos, if you want to see HER split herself in three! (I still say there are 3 sisters! Even though, a certain teacher says SHE does it all. Except in Canterbury Tales, where her blonde friend steals the show...) And the Hawaiian rapper guy? He's the genius that plays all the music, and edited all the videos. I think his name is Cecil B Herb Demille Mahelona.
Great video!! I found something that was off though.. In the video she says the the names were the only things that changed when the Romans adopted the Greek Gods but that's not true.. Along with the names their personalities changed too. The Gods' personalities became more warlike and the Gods' believed in discipline more along with other things..
Israel and Rome probably had the biggest impact on Western Civilization. We still practice both ways of their governments in some ways, sometimes mixed together.
Why not make a video of Spartacus? This clip made me think of that, I would like to se something about the "War of Spartacus"/"Third Servile war". Anyway ALL of your clips are very good :)
@historyteachers Is that where the word for Insulation comes from? If so that's really Ironic. Love the Videos BTW, shout out from your British Fans :D
Well, conceptually, sort of. The famously poorly built, rickety, and fire-prone Roman tenements (apartment buildings) were called "insula" from the Latin word for "island," because they were surrounded on four sides by streets (like an island surrounded by water). "Insulation" also comes from "insula"/"island" because of how the water separates an island from the mainland and thus makes it hard for something to travel from one to the other (like, say, electricity from the wire to your hand, or heat from the pot to your hand). Incidentally, a "peninsula" is "almost an island" from Latin "paene insula" "almost (an) island."
@anisocoro Google translates the Latin to: "He seems to be me, I should justly to be moved, it seems, in some cases evenenerit does he know?" Obviously, Google is missing something. Kindly elucidate to us ignoranti, oh fine anisocoro, that we may know more your thoughts!
Just an idea, since I learned about them in history... Why not do a video on John Locke or Thomas Hobbes (probably Locke, since I'd say he's more famous)? Love the video, btw. :)
At 2:57 when you say "insulae that were not fireproof" did you mean "villae"? "Insulae" in Latin means "Islands", and "Villae" means "the farmhouses/ villas".
I just found these videos recently and they are amazing. Funny, educational and very clever. Whoever concieved these is genius.
joe thanks! It was a while ago.
joe See also Facebook: History Teachers. Google Amy Burvall (The Singer) and Herb Mahelona (The Genius).

I've only watched half a dozen of these so far, but they're all brilliant and I'm looking forward to the rest! Not just fun parodies, but also accurate and informative!
I've used these videos for a few years now. My students and I love them. I wish the lyrics were available.

The most hilarious video I saw today.:-D
Building Rome

I want to be like you! Wish all the teachers were so creative!
Rome was great. As long as you were a citizen. If you weren't, life sucked. But citizens had it wonderful.
