- A tribute to one of Russiaʻs most influential and colorful leaders. Born Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg (1729). Received the name Catherine after joining the Russina Orthodox Church. Married Peter, the Grand Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, who succeeded to the throne as Peter III of Russia, with Catherine as Empress Consort. Six months later, she orchestrated Peterʻs abdication, leaving Catherine to rule as Empress of Russia. (original remake of the instrumental)
LYRICS
A German princess headed north at age fifteen
Hand-picked for the Russian Duke his name was Peter III (Fyodorovich)
Married and converted to Russian Orthodoxy
Learned the customs and the language say goodbye to “Sophie”!
Oh, oh, oh, oh
So overwrought when she tied the knot
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Her love Orlov helped her with the plot
Followed through with the coup
And Peter forced to abdicate
(Empress of Russia, baby)
Seized the throne for her own
Peter was killed; that was his fate
(Empress of Russia, baby)
Catherine the Great (of all Russia)
Expanded Russia through two Russo-Turkish Wars
Bits of Poland and Ukraine, got access to warm-water ports
Her improved legal system called “The Instruction”
Great for the nobility; for serfs it’s no fun
Oh, oh, oh, oh
She got her shot, such an autocrat
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Pugachev caught- rebel killed on the spot
Westernize; modernize
She idolized Peter the Great
(Emperor of Russia , baby)
Liked to write the Enlightenment philosophes of the day
(She was a thinker, baby)
Catherine, Catherine the Great (of all Russia)
All my lovers tend to help me in policy
And when we’re done, like Potemkin
No denying I give them land and peasants or money
I advanced education
Took the first vaccination!
Progressive, ambitious
St. Petersburg, the “Northern Venice”
It’s no lie
She gave rights and privilege to the gentry
(Wanted to please them, maybe)
Made a school with harsh rules
For girls of the nobility
(And opened Japan to trading)
Westernize; modernize
She idolized Peter the Great
(Built him a statue ,baby)
And that lie how she died
Has caused her legacy disgrace
(Loved horses but not in that way!)
Loved the arts
Voltaire called her the “Star of the North”, yeah
(The Hermitage was her collection)
Died of stroke
It’s no joke
Thirty-four years of glorious reign
(She gave Russia some direction)
Catherine the Great
“Loved horses but not in that way”
10/10 best quote from any song.
LOL
I'm confused
@@lime__time Back then there was this rumor that Catherine "LOVED" horses! Nudge, wink. She DID! But not in "that way!" COUGH!~
@@PierreaSweedieCat ahhhhh
Im confused
Everytime I hear Pokerface now all I can hear is
"Ru-ru-russia" lol
Stella Ella Ola I Probably will too
The song is great but its hard to get out in my mind
Sorry my english is bad
@Shihan Yan
At least ur new here like me
oh my god same
Because of Weird Al's parody, when ever i listen to Pokerface by Lady Gaga I hear the words "Polka Face" instead
I now have this song (and The French Revolution to the tune of "Bad Romance") stuck in my head rather than the original.
I have Women's Suffrage to the tune of Bad Romance in my head. But yes, this is catchy.
ErikaVictoria Medrano I like that version, too.
***** Vote, vote, vote...
I WANT TO WEAR PANTS!
ErikaVictoria Medrano What?
***** The song. The women's suffrage version.
'Loved horses but not in that way'!!
This is why the kids love her and her methods. Students are not babysat, but really honestly and maturely engaged, have fun and really stretch their learning in a measured way. The whole song is hitting various points in a coarse outline/rubric that the students will encounter. Nothing is random which makes it even better when you know where and why these songs are doing what they do. Great ed stuff.

How are you not extremely famous for this? Its amazing.
Brandon Maiello she’s famous in schools throughout the students XD

I still can’t believe it’s been 10 years I used to watch her as a kid now I’m 26
This song will teach history. Lady Gaga is adding to the education of young people in school.
"Loved horses but not in that way" lol
So original lol
I love horses as well, and DEFINITELY not in that way either!
This has got to be my favorite historical figure song.
AGREED! :D
Rasputin tho
wouldn't it be great is someone translated this into Russian?
Please come back to RUclips it would redeem 2020
yeah

@@alt8791 look at their most recent videos, I know it's amazing
Come back, channel maker. I require more videos. They are my intellectual sustenance.
indeed
Sadly, Mr H, (The genius behind the videos) has gone on to teach, conduct, and write operas, in Hawaiian. They are very good operas, but, well, that does us no good.
And Mrs.B? (The actress) SHE has gone of to be a VP at some Educational Company.
The most we could do, is beg HER to write a few songs and sing them, and put them on Soundcloud . (There are already some there.) There would be no videos, but it would be better than nothing.
Unless somehow, we could raise the money to hire them. And that would cost. A lot.
Well, there are songs, no videos on Soundcloud: History Teachers. There is the Facebook page, with a wealth of history. There was a Twitter account. It has history. Little current.
See comments elsewhere. What we have, we have. 50 Precious songs/videos! Currently, H is doing Hawaiian High Opera. SHE is VP at an Edu-products co.
What we got, we got for free. YAY! To get them to do more vids would sadly be most expensive. Like you, many of us mourn, and miss the heady days of a new vid each month.
But, the vids, had a role, a duty, a job. Which they did. They won a fantastic war (One that makes crossing the Rubicon insignificant!).... They left a "back-up plan legacy" for someone ultra important. And they were a gift to Earth.
We shall enjoy and treasure. They are downloadable for free. You may not sell, them, or claim rights, but you can share under educational/parody licence, freely, as they were bequeathed to us.
Rejoice that we got what we got! Take Care. LLAP.
Why would you object? I am an old hand. I've been here since the start. New people ask questions. I, or another, answer as best as we can. We are those who were left behind to help preserve The Legacy. Only HER Majesty can affect what we do. Do you not care that others should gain from this vast wealth that was left here? When bad things are said, do you not care that someone should stand forth? Trust me, I am not alone. And the other names, know who they are.
Lives were saved, careers were saved, educations were saved, many were helped by what you find here. That "good work", cannot be allowed to pass away.
Recall: "... What's found here, may be found elsewhere.... What's not here, you won't find anywhere..."
Remember: You know not what may happen tomorrow. Trust this old man with experience. Treasure those you have. Treasure the things you do together. Treasure the adventure. Always help! You may be the only one to do so! And the small things you do, in the sum balance of the universe... are worth more that the big things, in the end.
Join us to keep The Legacy Alive. Take care. LLAP.
+Natalia Nutella Now that's just plain rude to say!
What is the problem with someone showing appreciation, and putting a lot of effort into explaining things and trying to answer people's questions?
Why history teachers are always so awesome? I mean, every single one I met had tried to make what they teach interesting, understand way better how students think than any other subject teacher.
"Loved horses but not in that way" BEST
Man I wish history had been like this in my day, perhaps then I may have taken history to my final year. these people are awesome.
+Merthurmad Sadly, they are no longer making these. But they do have a Facebook Page and Twitter. One could beg....
Love these historical songs of great women.
Empress of Russia baby

I've only watched about 10 of these videos so far, but I think that wig is the one that looks best on her. Had to say it.
That Japan thing surprised me.
she also colonized Alaska!

I wish the whole world
Wonder what Alaska would look like if it was still Russian. Think Americans would be afraid of Russia invading through there.
This is brilliant!! Great job combining pop and history. This is probably my favorite historyteachers production. I have to say, I burst out laughing when you rhymed "shot" with "autocrat"! This is and horrible histories = a productive weekend. :)
Sharad Majumdar YOu do know about their Facebook Page? History Teachers....

Some facts about Ekatarina (Catherine the great)
Though the love between her and Grigory Potemkin did not work out, he continued to serve loyal to her
Her son, how should I say this, didn’t like her. Tell me if there is a better way to word it guys.
Her mother, Johanna Elisabeth, didn’t care for her until her oldest brother died even though her brother was younger than her. After that, Catherine did have a brother, but half a decade younger, so “care” would go to Catherine. Catherine was told if she did not find a husband, she would become a spinster. Her mom would even take her to spinster relatives. Peter Ulrich, her 1st husband was going to be king of Sweden,
He lost it because he was adopted by Elizabeth of Russia, his aunt, and gained the Russian crown after his aunt died. Russia hated him so, most of the people helped Catherine become queen. Surfs were slaves except slaves for working in factories and they also had more rights.
Basically they were factory workers. Catherine set up vaccine centers all over Russia. Sophia was her name. It changed to Ekatarina or Catherine when she ether joined the royal family of Russia or became orthodox. I forgot which one. There are much more facts but I don’t have time to type them all. Bye and have a great day.
My virtual school history teachers had us watch these, and they're not half bad song parodies.
Really this is your best one. It's fun!
Nah. I think the best of this channel is the Black Death song. We watched it in class and it's so good.
Ooh Ooh Fleas on rats Fleas on rats
I just finished watching a documentary on Catherine the Great because, after listening to this song so much, I felt compelled to learn more about her.
U a so lucky she got a lot of money n lovers pls try to find maps of China n Polland on Google its the cleverest thing 4 cleverest people ever 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂school up to 22 it great 😂😂😂😂😂😂
So Catherine was simply awesome

Omg I want her as my history teacher
Your crazy
But this video is funny
Oh ikr lol
If I could go back in time, I would save her because she as a very ambitious woman who could have done so much more for her country. She is BY FAR, my favorite figure of history. I hate to say it but her coup d'état was flawless. But seriously, how many other people got the references to horses? XD
That rumor was started by people who obviously didn't like her!
Which rumor, the horses?
I guess they couldn't handle a strong woman being in charge!
I find it quite hilarious.
Matt - Kun In a weird way , I guess it is funny! I mean, she was very sexually active!
I remember the days I used to be addicted to this channel. I loved them so much! They helped me loads. Looking back at my previous love for history brought me to this channel. Oh why did they stop? They were great!

As a Russian I'll say - THIS IS AWESOME!
These videos are absolutely perfect!! Very educational in a fun way, it makes learning History very enjoyable, even for this 51 year old lady (me)! I accidentally discovered these when viewing other song "parodies". I give you 1 million thumbs up!
+Rachel Rodgers Sadly, they are no longer making these. But they do have a Facebook Page and Twitter. One could beg....
I think these are very cool videos and make for an enjoyable history lesson too! I wish more folks would dream similar videos up like this. Using a familiar song and changing the lyrics to suit the topic at hand makes for a good way to teach a lesson whether itbe history, science, or maybe even math. Maybe more kids would stay in school, if their lessons/classes had more spunk to them!
+Rachel Rodgers Well, we have to go to HER Facebook page, Tweet HER, and bed for just another song, even without the H videos. And on Soundcloud are some Teasers (not the full songs) just vocals, no videos.
See here for more songs, no videos, tho: soundcloud.com/historyteacherz
Too cool for words. History literally rocks!
This is better than the real poker face.

Im from Russia and my nane's Catherine. Thank you for this "Poker Face"! You awesome!)
I wish you were my History teacher! I loved History but I litterally would never had left school even after my "baccalauréat" if lessons were made this way.
Absolutely amazing! 👏
This is fantastic!
World History Class has not been the same since I found these videos.
Incredible. A technical and emotionally masterful film that truly changed my life. This is nothing short of pure cinematic genius. It blew me away. Forget the Godfather and Citizen Kane, this is the greatest film, no, not even that, the greatest work of art ever produced. Every man, woman, child, animal, plant, and microscopic bacterium should be forced to watch this film. I can't wait to see what this mind-bogglingly talented director has in store for us next. Truly, he is a force to be reckoned with.
Probably the best song you've made. Pokerface is probably the best song Lady Gaga's made.
+Henry Gutierrez And you seen the French revolution one, based on Bad Romance?
P.M. Laberge I have, but I just may be biased to which one's better
Henry Gutierrez Hard not to be biased, eh? 10116, Crusades (with THE Voice), Agincourt. Revolution, Borgias, CaCaCatherine. My 1st and Fav is Beowulf.

Really creative! I enjoyed this, thank you. Xox
Как? Как я пропускал этот шедевр 10 лет :( Это просто гениально !!!!
One might do well to examine Massie's " Catherine the Great, Portrait of a Woman". Most of her first years in Russia might be likened to dancing on the razor's edge. A shame that she never had the opportunity to exchange volleys with Napoleon. All of Robert Massie's works are superb.
This song is really awesome! I got my little fourth grade sister singing along all the time. Thanks!

Like so many others on here, I too have greatly missed you and am soooo happy that you're back with a new video!!! I use many of your other videos in my 6th-8th gr. S.S. classes. Although, it does suck that I can't use too many in my 8th gr. American History class because this year's class are the ones who ABSOLUTELY LOVE ALL your videos!!!
Oh, I didn't knew that !So Russia's name in Russian is "rossiya" or "rassiya" and Catherine's name is "ekaterina" !
And Peter is "fedorovitch"
The second option is more accurately reflects the pronunciation of Russian literary norm. The first option is more like a northern dialect of Russian language.
Théo Galeag, actually "Feodorovich" is not name but the thing that is called "otchestvo" (it consists of the name of a person's father and a suffix -(o)vich for men or -(o)vna for women: so "Feodorovich" means that his father's name was Feodor)
So glad you are back! I love your work!
