Hey Jake, new sub here. As someone new to Lego, I would love to see pictures on the screen of the sets you mention. Just to get a feel for them that would be great! Thanks!
Man, after this... I just noticed you deserve your own TV show 😂LoL! It was the longest but yet the most educative Lego video I´ve ever seen over here Cheers all the way from Peru!
New subscriber because of this video - one of the best breakdowns of the different Lego investing categories. A great follow up video would be the best categories in terms of time - which categories shoot up in value as soon as they retire and which ones take a little time, and the best time to sell (initial pop after retirement, Q4, special event [e.g. release of movie], or long term hold).
Great video Jake! I think the mini Disney Castle is the next Tie Fighter Helmet. Buy them every time you see them in my opinion as they are hard to find!
New to the channel and have recently fallen back into the Lego scene. Love it all! Very informative and can’t wait for more vids to come! Just recently snagged a bin of legos at goodwill and a sealed brick head wonder woman was in there too.
Hey Jake!! As an investor for over 10 years here in the UK, I’d say I agree with about 75% of your list … but that’s not a bad thing, just proves that what works for one, doesn’t necessarily work for another!! But great insight my friend and thanks for the video!!
@@JakesBricks Thanks for coming back Jake and sorry for late reply … long day working over here!! Like yourself, over the years have made gains and mistakes … but i also like you mentioned, don’t really get involved in small sets anymore and only really invest in the larger sets of which theme I’m investing in at the time. I agree “icons” would be top for me, Ninjago and Star Wars are always up there for me along with “Ideas” But for me, I try to aim my investing towards AFOL’s and the larger sets for bigger returns!!
You list matches my gut instinct pretty well. I rarely buy anything out of your top 5. Only if it’s a great price as in more than 30% off will I even consider it.
Jake, I agree on Lego Duplo. As a fellow Lego Dad, it can be annoying to build with. Yet it's challenged me to get creative and level up my animal game. Additionally I think there are two types of investors: 1. The completionist - wants all the Lego Batman sets (even the Duplo) 2. The parent who wants to play with a Jurassic World Dino (Batman or whatever) with their kid. But I also use my kids Duplo to add height to my Lego Mocs and keep the weight down. No need to fill the giant Lego mountain with Lego bricks when Duplo are cheaper.
I know you commented this like 9 months ago, but adding height and bulk using duplo is straight genius. I'm going to have to start stealing my kid's duplo 🤣
Regarding Ninjago, a surprisingly high amount of fans are in their late teens are early 20's, basically AFOL newbies. That's because the themes been going on for 10+ years now to the kids that grew up watching the show have grown into young adults. And as young adults, they've now got a disposable income and nostalgia to spend it on. It's crazy how much some of these fans are willing to spend on older sets from their childhood and that that nostalgia extends to newer sets to a degree because they are still invested in the theme. Ninjago did something Lego Friends didn't: it retained its fans. While the expectation for Friends is that you outgrow it, that didn't really happen with Ninjago because the theme kept a singular continuity and Lego making sets specifically targeted at older fans. You think a 10 year old is going to shell out for Ninjago City Gardens? No way fam, those sets are for the older fans or even non-Ninjago fans who just want a cool, Japanese inspired building. But I think there is a lot of uncertainty regarding Ninjago. With a theme like Star Wars, it's been a proven success. But Ninjago is so experimental and "new" that most hardcore investors (who are older than Ninjago's young and old fans) don't really know what to make of it. It's totally foreign to them. I think their general mentality is "Huh? Ninjago's still going? Why is it still going? But wait, it's been selling for 11 years now and has some massive successes, is that indicative of a safe investment?" We've only just hit the point were investors are realizing that it might be viable and it'll be a few more years until an opinion is formed on it. But for what it's worth, I think Ninjago's probably a decent investment. The Brick Quest calculated each theme's average increase in price and Ninjago was number 5 overall. This was above reputable themes like Harry Potter, Marvel, and Creator Expert. I know some investors are skeptical and it's almost certainly because they are so in the dark when it comes to Ninjago. But I anticipate that even the new sets you got will see a significant price increase because the Ninjago fanbase will look back on those sets with nostalgia in 2 years and combined with the niche tribal and underwater theming will attracting non-Ninjago fans. The Seabound wave is the closest thing Lego has gotten to Lego Atlantis since, well, Lego Atlantic over 10 years go. You just need to look at the recently retired Prime Empire and Master of the Mountain sets to see that these newer waves will likely be popular. Those waves were also niche but the prices are rising at a steady rate. I may be bias as a Ninjago fan but I also think that means my ear is closer to the ground than most of high profile Lego investors who can't make heads or tails of Ninjago. But from where I stand, Ninjago is just going to go up. I think pretty much every set will yield some kind of success but the real trick will be finding the big ticket items like the Ninjago City series and Dragon sets. Those catapult Ninjago from a good investment into a great one.
Shoot this is some deep analysis! I think I agree with everything you said! Ninjago has incredible potentially if the earth collectors are able to put up some cash as adult collectors those older sets could go crazy!
I am a huge Brickheadz fan and collector. Every single on of them is unique and also have some unique details to them that, for me at least, make them very collectible. I live in Sweden though and some of them have been hard to get. I have 4 that I miss still, from Comic-Con (which are rarely seen in Europe): Superman and Wonderwoman 41490, Batman and the Joker 41491, Ironman and Captain America 41492 and Boba Fett and Han Solo in carbonite 41498. I hope that I one day can afford them. By the way, great video. :)
There so many brickheadz collectors out there! I think that’s why they go up in value so much! Thx for sharing and good luck on the hunt for those sdcc exclusives
I think Dots sets have potential to be good if your a bricklink store, lots of unique lots to get more buyers to your store. They probably won’t sell fast either though
Great videos! I’ve been investing in lego for 3 years and started mainly selling minifigures on whatnot because it’s so hard to deal with shipping big sealed sets. How do you pay for all the boxes when you sell sealed sets?
Hi, I'm agree with you, I will put in first Creator Expert (Icons), second Ideas and third "seasonal"!!!! All those winter village and christmas theme work so good! StarWars helmet are so collectible, perfect for investing.
Very interesting, although I will argue some in this list. Personally, I am not a duplo collector but am quite surprised to see it beat some of the themes. For star wars, to determine which sets to get, is typically after a year or 2 (If they hadn't retired), look up brickset and see their minifig pricing. Sets that are well over 1000+ pieces are generally winners. Anyways, there's a theme you missed out. The ghostbusters with 2 sets (75827 and 75828). While they may not be exactly 200 300% fold, sets like 75827 can make well over $300 in profit.
Great thoughts! And yes maybe Duplo was a little high but I have had a weird amount of success with it. I should’ve included ghostbusters but I went off the theme list on LEGO.com and they don’t have it listed currently. Sounds like you have some experience in the investing game! Thx for the comment and appreciate your perspective
How good is a lego investment if I hold it like a retirement fund (10-25 years)? I know buying like a sealed Gameboy will be a great investment or an early iPhone 2G sealed. Thanks

I was thinking about picking up a Lego Assembly square set tomorrow on double vip day. I was curious to hear your thoughts about it as an investment. Do you think I should go for it, or invest in a different set instead? I think it’s suppose to retire very soon. Thanks in advance!
I’d love to chat about lego Star Wars with you sometime! I got into it the past couple years. I’ve mainly been selling on Whatnot, but I could use some advice. I’ve literally spent almost all day, listening to your videos while I worked. lol
How bad do stickers from stores affect prices. It seems anywhere I the UK with a discount have stickers on the box. Only lego store don't but they are always full price
I have been collecting and investing Legos for about 10 years, so I was curious to hear what you have to say doing it for 7 years. You mentioned on your video that you don't sell on Amazon, so do you only sell on Ebay?
Hey Dvl! Love connecting with people who have done this longer than me. have never really explored Amazon selling… I have cousin that selling LEGO is easier on eBay because you can show box imperfections and I can handle issues with the customer directly. I am also gated on selling certain skus on Amazon.
I'm not sure there are many duplo collectors but they are one of my best sellers. I think it's just cashed up parents who don't know what things cost. Duplo batman just sells. It's mad.
So how do you feel about speed champions going forward with them not being exclusive? I've seen a few of the 2021 sets for 16 at Walmart and I picked up one or two for my own collection. Do you think they would be worth grabbing a few more to possibly end up adding one to my collection for "free"?
Those are cool for sure but i personable never picked any up… they are really large and expensive to ship. If you had a retail store they would be cool to have but other than that I’d pass
I collect Technic and Speed Champions because #1 I like them #2 the price per piece makes sense. The Land Rover has over 2500 pieces and sells for $159 and has a ton of MOCs out there. Yet there are sets that have around 200 pieces and sell for $40. Doesn’t make sense to me so started to collect microfighters and Battle packs to sell as bundles in the future, they seem to have done well in the past couple years.
Hi Jake, any thoughts on investing the Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle, heard their retirement date has extended and criticism for micro scale.. what are your thoughts? Thank you! 😊
So with the price increases coming on august 1st this may be your last chance to get it at $400. I usually stray away from investing in sets that I have to hold for 2+ years till they retire… but this set regardless of how long it is on the shelves I think will do great post retirement. I am planning to pick up a couple today to hold on to and I will look for deals on more over the next couple years.
36:50 The thing to take out is to never invest in OT sets. I despise the Original Trilogy and how many sets are from it; if it ain't got clones, I ain't getting it.
I remember when Lego was a toy you were bought or bought for someone to play with. Now apparently it's an investment traded by spivs trying to get rich quick. Talk about sucking all the fun out of a toy. No wonder the prices have skyrocketed in recent years!
@@pringleaddict5827 If people didn't "invest" most ordinary people might be able to afford to get retired sets. It's not just supply and demand, it's spivs, looking to get rich quick, scalping sets, flipping them for stupid money that only "investors" can afford and then crowing about it on RUclips. Even a basic set of Lego bricks these days goes for stupid money given what they cost new - because people think they're entitled to a return on their "investment"! Of course, if you don't see the problem, then there's little point in trying to educate you on it.
Sorry for all the comments but I add them as I go through the video DUPLO : sells well to the parents because they consider them as “educational” and want to or think they will give their kids a step up or give their children an “edge” over other kids prior to starting school particularly with fine motor skills. DUPLO that has the alphabet or numbers are almost guaranteed to be winners if part of another theme such as Disney or with animals Ie: animals with numbers or letters sell well and because we want our kids to be smarter we will part with the $$$
Surprised you didn't mention Star Wars battlepacks. $12 to $15 new and most of them go for $50 now. I have a few that are over $130. So I would say SW battlepacks are just as good or better than Brickheadzzz.
@@JakesBricks A lot of that has to do with the failure of the sequels at the box office. Sets with Rose Tico and Rey probably aren't worth too much LOL

I am also gated on selling certain skus on Amazon.
Hey Jake, how much are you selling the orange porsche behind you for? Need it to complete my set.
Shoot me an email! Jake@jakesbricks.com
I'm not sure there are many duplo collectors but they are one of my best sellers. I think it's just cashed up parents who don't know what things cost. Duplo batman just sells. It's mad.
Right!? Duplo Batman is crazy 🤯
So how do you feel about speed champions going forward with them not being exclusive? I've seen a few of the 2021 sets for 16 at Walmart and I picked up one or two for my own collection. Do you think they would be worth grabbing a few more to possibly end up adding one to my collection for "free"?
Speed champions may not do as well as they have done In the past but should still be a top 5 theme for investing
Are Lego minifigures series good for investing?
Not typically
I work at a retail store and in the past they auctioned off the lego display cases that lights up, would that have any value?
Those are cool for sure but i personable never picked any up… they are really large and expensive to ship. If you had a retail store they would be cool to have but other than that I’d pass
I collect Technic and Speed Champions because #1 I like them #2 the price per piece makes sense. The Land Rover has over 2500 pieces and sells for $159 and has a ton of MOCs out there. Yet there are sets that have around 200 pieces and sell for $40. Doesn’t make sense to me so started to collect microfighters and Battle packs to sell as bundles in the future, they seem to have done well in the past couple years.
I like this strategy Billy Bob! Keep it up
Hi Jake, any thoughts on investing the Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle, heard their retirement date has extended and criticism for micro scale.. what are your thoughts? Thank you!
Hi, I like watching your videos. beautiful video for me to watch. I hope you progress and succeed. I always look forward to your latest videos.
Thx Aariz! That’s high praise!
You forgotten mixels it's also a Lego theme and mixels is my favorite Lego theme
I was only using the list of current themes available on LEGO.com
Could you do a video on how to find deals on Lego
I’ll add that to my list
@@JakesBricks Thank you so much, I can’t find anyone else doing a video where they actually explain the process and what apps (if any) to use
36:50 The thing to take out is to never invest in OT sets. I despise the Original Trilogy and how many sets are from it; if it ain't got clones, I ain't getting it.
I partially agree... But overall I would say yes
Go Blue!!
Let’s go!!!
Where do you find some of these sets on sale?
Amazon usually has a few that are always on sale.
Ya usually around Black Friday, Amazon prime days, etc. Follow my tik tok for real time LEGO deals
I remember when Lego was a toy you were bought or bought for someone to play with. Now apparently it's an investment traded by spivs trying to get rich quick. Talk about sucking all the fun out of a toy. No wonder the prices have skyrocketed in recent years!
I do remember… and I still play with that same toy! I invest in sets to fund my building hobby and it’s a blast!
I mean its sold by companies to get rich , dont see the problem, supply and demand , if people didn’t invest you can’t get retired sets
I've seen the old friends legos makes Good money those retired one
Very true! But they are like 10 years old now
Great video
Thx!
Sorry for all the comments but I add them as I go through the video
DUPLO : sells well to the parents because they consider them as “educational” and want to or think they will give their kids a step up or give their children an “edge” over other kids prior to starting school particularly with fine motor skills.
DUPLO that has the alphabet or numbers are almost guaranteed to be winners if part of another theme such as Disney or with animals
Ie: animals with numbers or letters sell well and because we want our kids to be smarter we will part with the $$$
Great thought!
What’s UCS set mean?
Ultimate Collector Series
Oh man not sure if I can keep watching with that Michigan shirt
😬😬😬 sorry bought that! I’m guessing your a Hawkeye fan?
Surprised you didn't mention Star Wars battlepacks. $12 to $15 new and most of them go for $50 now. I have a few that are over $130. So I would say SW battlepacks are just as good or better than Brickheadzzz.
You are totally right… but unfortunately not all Star Wars sets are winners
@@JakesBricks A lot of that has to do with the failure of the sequels at the box office. Sets with Rose Tico and Rey probably aren't worth too much LOL
@@studebricker2845 interesting thought…
Go blue!
💪💪
What about Monkie Kid?? 🤔 🤔
I talked about it at the end of the video. I really didn’t dive into it bc there haven’t been many sets that have retired yet!
@@JakesBricks oh yes sorry, i turned off a second before you talked about it 😅👍🏻
@@patricktiefenbacher I understand… this video was looooooong
Lego Friends! Lego Super Mario! Lego Disney! Lego Frozen! Lego Castle and Train! Lego Cars! Lego City! Lego DC! Lego Minecraft! 👿👿👿
LEGO train has done well for me historically
What about Monkie Kid?
Forgot to mention it but we don’t have much data yet
The Flintstones has been a stinker though
This is true!
I thought bionicle or hero factory would appear on this list…
Yes but they are not currently available on LEGO.com… that was the list I used
I got ungated by buying 10 of the same item from Lego and submitting a scan of the packing slip in my application. If you get rejected just resubmit.
Dang love the hustle! I’ll have to try that
GO BLUE

There are WAY more Batman figure variants than Spider-Man
Truth!!!
reverse flash, flying fox
Do you have that fig and set?
Lego should’ve been split City/Space .
Probably...
GO BUCKS
This didn't age well 🤪... JK JK! Hopefully we meet in the National Championship
@@JakesBricks lol no it didn't.
I disagree with friends
Friends sets that are animal based have been good for me
This is actually a good thought’
🤣🤣🤣 i think the same about brickheads, those things are ugly. but people buy them. dont know why but they do.
Funko collectors are the same to me! But hey to each their own
and you need a ton of $ to do this
I started with $300
@@JakesBricks how many years ago?
Super mario lego sucks, there should have been mini figs :(
Agreeeeed!
And now you do exactlu the opposite as "experts" are othen wrong 😂😂😋😋😏😏
I don’t think anyone is truly an “expert” but I enjoy the investing experience enough to share it with others to help them fund their building hobby
@@JakesBricks Was just kidding and I'm sure people can take some good advises from your video but as always do their own research 👍
@@dolwolfianphotography AGREED!
I make bongs with Lego Duplo.
