A very enjoyable video so thanks for taking the time to film your adventure. I had watched your other vid on boat handling & on both occasions I could tell how much confidence you have in your boat but that's not all. You handle her as if she is part of you & you sail her like you are wearing her as a coat or a cumfy pair of shoes. Good boat-handling is a delight to watch. Have a great season. Chin-chin

Thank you for the kind comments, yes I know what you mean, I just want to watch sailing vids too!!! Thanks for subscribing, I have some good adventures planned for this season, but I keep getting sucked into watching transatlantic crossings! Not sure if my trailer sailer will do that! She’s in bits on the driveway at the moment, but hoping to be all back together by end of March. Looking forward to getting back out there. Thanks for tuning in. Ollie.

Thanks for your nice comment, glad you enjoyed it. I’m hoping to do some bigger voyages so you never know the Atlantic could be on the list. Mrs keeps pointing out I have a massive hole in the bottom of the boat (keel box) so I might need to come up with a water tight lid for that first! It does sometimes spill out when choppy. ⛵️⛵️

Great vid, just showed up on my stream.
Need to get a hand bearing compass.
Take a bearing on a ship, check it again 3 or four minutes later, if the bearing changes you're missing it.
If the bearing is the same you'll hit it so check again............

Well done ,really enjoyed the video ,really omformative and gives people an idea of the many aspects involved in such a crossing ,i e just sailed from almeria south Spain to Melilla North African coast ,Spanish territory within Morocco,,,100 miles due south had know winds ,light winds, strong winds ,a couple of ferries ,,some dolphins ,oh and we got knocked off course by 30miles because of the sea state ,was my first time sailing as the skipper on such a journey, and now feeling a bit more confident and looking fwd to more trips .I’m one of those in a 30 footer , I bought it cheap in almeria as it had been abandoned 14 years

Thanks for your kind comments, great to hear! It means a lot to me.
Sound like you had a good adventure, did it make it more of an exciting trip with all these extra variables to contend with? More to think about? I always think that’s the best way to learn-by reflection. What would you have differently looking back? I did something that I’d totally have done differently on this crossing. It was a decision I made really early on that caught up with me at the very end of the outbound passage. Sounds like you have a sensible sized boat! But still tiny in the mighty ocean! Well done for rescuing her. What is she? ⛵️

Great video and adventure. Wish I had the confidence to undertake such crossings. Would like to see how you made your passage plan taking weather and tides into account. There are thousands of us small sail cruisers, nice to see videos about them rather than the 30ft plus boats which can take these crossings in their stride. Look forwards to seeing more of yours 👍

Hey, thanks for the comment, with a good weather window I’m sure you would be fine, is that a Jaguar in your profile pic? I think it certainly adds to the adventure in a smaller boat, be good to see more small boat adventure videos. As for passage planning, in theory the course to steer is direct in this case, assuming it takes 12 hours to cross-the tide sweeps you one way and then back the other. It took us 3 tide cycles and we left almost mid ebb so again, it took us back to a good track line. The wind headed us slightly so to counter that we headed up a bit for the last 15 or so miles, which eventually we could keep a close reach and still make the Oostende entrance, but then it was dark and all the big boats looked like they were going to mow us down, so we headed south of the Chanel, which did force us to punch some tide in the last bit. Can’t believe how much I learned. Next time I’ll try do a better video of the prep and planning. Also next time I’ll try arrive we’ll up tide of the entrance to get that tidal assist much earlier on. If you would like to see a bit more on this trip, I’ve written about it in my blog boatedout.uk/2022/07/25/southwold-oostende-southwold/
