it's sad that you don't mention Andy or Mike, seems like everyone forgets that the Smiths was a 4-piece. the bass and the drums were the backbone of the Smiths songs. listen to a song like Still Ill without bass, it just sounds hollow and wrong, and if Mike's drumming wasn't very connected or tight, the songs would've suffered. and bear it in mind i'm a guitarist myself lmao, i love the Smiths but i still think Johnny and Morrissey are just a bit overly obsessed over, and it completely shadows the talents of Andy and Mike.

"Well I Wonder" by The Smiths. Such a great track. Blissful simplicity. Also "Such A Little Thing" by Morrissey.
The catalogue of the Smiths as well as the singer Morrissey's solo career are simply masterpieces. There are so many great songs to choose from.

Just like Depeche Mode, The Cure, New Order and other bands of the era, the Smiths (and Morrissey solo) have a plethora of songs you’ll need to get to sometime! Some of the cleverest lyrical writing you will ever come across. Morrissey is actually on tour at the moment too - still relevant and playing new and old stuff in 2022.

  • @alylyu3659
    @alylyu3659 Год назад +14

Morrissey loves flowers, especially daffodils and gladioli.
    *
The Smiths have a lot of interesting songs to discover like There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, Still Ill, Hand In Glove, Barbarisms begin at at home, Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, How Soon Is Now, Bigmouth Strikes Again and others.
    *
Morrissey’s lyrics are full of wry sarcasm and sometimes can be harsh, he is known for dealing with controversial topics in his texts, but they are also full of melancholy, lyricism and true poesy.
So everyone will find something in them, that will hit home.

Morrissey is spinning flowers around, it's true. There is a story behind it. When he was just a lad, straight boys by the busloads would show up at his live shows and heave bouquets at him, some of them would faint. That's right. Morrissey gave straight English lads permission to be gentle and even homoerotic with him. Because Morrissey was celibate, the question of sex was always off of the table. That freed up his young, very straight, steelworker, punks, and tough guys to let their macho guard down and be free. It was an amazing scene to witness. There are documentaries about it. Young Morrissey was perpetually surrounded by flowers offered up by his heterosexual male audience. 🏳‍🌈❤💐Also, you have to know that Morrissey was the number one reason why English men, as well as globally, went vegetarian and vegan in the 80s and 90s. PETA has been a staunch ally with him for a long time. To this day, if he is performing, all restaurants in the area must agree to stop cooking animals. He refuses to be near it. You should listen to MEAT IS MURDER.

Something about Morrissey's lingering vocals does it for me. ❤ I adore this band and I am hoping you will continue your journey to other memorable Smiths songs. x Note - I am more than a bit excited about this possibility ! lol. Oh here are my suggestions and are generally regarded as fan faves - "Girlfriend in a Coma", "Panic", "Bigmouth Strikes Again", "What Difference Does It Make", "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" and "Panic". Nice, you've just taken your first step into the beauty, wit, & genius world of *The Smiths* - only together for five years, they're the most important British band of the past 40 years. Full album listens are justified - classics & holy music, all.
    Other Smiths video classics:
    "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now"
    "How Soon Is Now"
    "The Queen Is Dead"
"There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"
"Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before"
Singer Morrissey is an icon - a bit on the downslope these days but his early solo albums & singles (1988-1995) are essential. Recommended official videos:
    "Suedehead"
    "Will Never Marry"
    "Sing Your Life"

He could sing the phone book and still put you into a trance. I would highly suggest "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" and "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out." Both such beautiful songs. "Suffer The Children" is one of my absolute favorites although the subject matter is really heavy. I love how Morrisey was able to tackle a heartbreaking topic in such a beautiful and poignant manner. "William It Was Really Nothing" is also really great, as well as "Cemetery Gates" and "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others " The whole "Loudet Than Bombs" album is a masterpiece. I couldn't see anyone else mentioning it in the comments so I guess I'll jump in: apparently the "jumped-up pantry boy" and "return the ring" lines are lines lifted from a film adaptation of a homoerotic play called 'Sleuth' and is referring to returning stolen rings. Which I only know because I just looked it up. I always thought "return the ring" was just a quaintly-English way of saying "call him back."

If you want a similar dynamic in a rock band you can see that Queen would fit the bill. Queen was fronted by obviously gay Freddie Mercury (who never actually came out of the closet) - the rest of the band were comfortably straight and the dynamic this created was really attractive to audiences even if they didn't quite understand or want to admit what was going on. Of course musically Queen and the Smiths are quite different but they had the same gay/straight situation that Queen had and if you keep in mind this dynamic and that Morrissey wrote all the lyrics for the Smith's songs and he wrote about being gay extensively while being ambiguous about his sexuality at the same time makes for an endlessly fascinating body of work !! Of course his lyrics weren't just about being gay but there's a healthy proportion that is. Something about a gay man fronting a straight band that makes you want to look with mouth open in astonishment and your ears open in appreciation of the music that this creates.

Please, react to the legendary Tina Turner. One of her last live concerts has attracted over 80k spectators in one night. That was something a few decades ago.
