Thanks guys!! Glad you enjoyed it. This song was pieced together from jam recordings while they were high on something. They later had to learn to play it in it's entirety after. Brilliant shit.
Even though this song was released in 1984, it remained in heavy rotation in the alternative rock & industrial dance clubs & night clubs through the end of the 80s at least. It was ubiquitous. Even to this day, hearing it triggers such profound and specific memories of the feeling of the perfect MDMA high, dancing and partying until the wee hours of the morning, and the excitement of the carefree hookups. All of the things to explore in your late teens and early 20s. Luckily that life never consumed me and I moved on to healthier and more stable pursuits, but I’m glad I had those adventures in the prime of my youth. This is one of those songs that brings it all back so vividly. Legendary piece of music.

Great reaction guys, glad you liked this hypnotic Smiths anthem. Their sound was very different to most mainstream 80's bands. I know you guys in the US love your genres so I guess indie rock is the closest. Morrisey (Vocals) wrote most of the lyrics, often quite dark but tinged with humour (Girlfriend in a coma!), Johnny Marr (Guitar) wrote most of the music. After the Smiths, Morrisey went solo and Marr colaborated with many artists including Modest Mouse. They were a really influental band and well worth exploring. Try - 'This charming man', 'Panic', 'Heaven knows I'm miserable now', 'The boy with the thorn in his side', can't go wrong with any of them!
Johnny Marr is a really good guitarist and Morrissey is such a great lyricist too. A lot of their songs are about British social culture so they might not crossover too well but they wrote some cracking tunes.
Morning fellas! I love this song! Its so chill and hypnotic! You can loose yourself in the sound❤️❤️ (it also is the theme song for the show "charmed".) Thanks shan for requesting it!!! Great choice all around!❤️🤓💯
Johnny Marr is a guitar Genius... Guitar...Bass...Drums...Vocals, nothing else. All that sound is guitar. Marr layered, and layered his sound. In the 80's only The Edge and Marr was pushing guitar sounds and atmosphere more than anyone else.
The smiths are one of my favourite bands , they have lots of great songs and amazing lyrics. And Johnny Marr is one of the greatest guitarists. They where famous for having depressing lyrics over a happy tune. My favourites are 'Theirs a light that never goes out ' and ' I know its over '
Always liked this song. Might be wrong, but I’d say this song is about loneliness and the need to be loved. Very relatable, which always makes the best songs, and this pretty much applies to everyone.
This riff was based off of a bluesy rockabilly riff with hella reverb. I’m a new fan catching up on all these videos man I love em😂 I hop you do “bigmouth strikes again” or “a boy with a thorn in his side” their songs are notorious for having morrissey’s depressing ass lyrics over Johnny marr’s upbeat, jangling gee-tar and dance-y basslines RIP Andy rourke

This is the moment Emo was born. I hated this when it dropped but have to say I love it now. This album is a classic it's on every 50 y/o girls playlist.
One of the best 80’s songs and cool overall because of its unique sound. The guitarist did a lot of things to pull off that guitar sound..mainly it was run through four amps among other things. It’s a very cool guitar sound. The Smiths were super talented at their peak in the mid 80’s. A few good albums from that decade they put out. Pretty much fell apart as a band by 1990 for several reasons..music tastes were changing and a lot of good 80’s bands couldn’t swallow becoming 90’s pop acts. The Smiths had a fair amount of fighting among members, mainly because the singer Morrisey felt his ideas for the band were more important than the rest of the guys and he decided to go solo. Don’t know how successful he was because I felt they’d peaked in the 80’s and probably wouldn’t top that. This song was so unique and so otherworldly that it weaves through your mind and takes you on a trip. Bands today wish they were this talented and imaginative.
As others have mentioned, a cover of this by Love Spit Love was the theme to Charmed. It's a good cover, I really like it, but the original has a quality that can't be replicated or replaced. Still, check it out sometime. And definitely check out more of the Smiths!

I love The Smiths, they were one of the early proto goth emo bands along with The Cure,Joy Division/New Order, The Smiths are especially a favorite of Mexican Chicano goth girls, they love Morrissey
The title is in the song. Kind of. At the end. “When you say it’s gonna happen now. What exactly does that mean? See I’ve already waited too long. And all my hope is gone. “
Were you ever asleep in the back seat of a car being driven at night, and awakened by the horn of a driver in another car going the other direction? That's what that sounds like...
The fact you think they were a five piece band, when they were a three musicians and a singer speaks volumes. As others said, Johnny Marr is a guitar God, Morrissey an absolute poet and Andy Rourke/Mike Joyce an incendiary rhythm section. R.I.P Andy Rourke, who left us this year. So many great songs, perhaps go to 'Barbarism Begins at Home'
The theme song from Charmed! :D Noone mentioning Andy Rourke passed away recently Noone mentioning how Morrissey has gone on to be a really nasty piece of work.
God I love the Smiths, I remember their songs it just echoed my life as a 16 year old girl who didn’t have the fashionable clothes my friends had, I was considered ugly and from being about 13 my main friends I’d known all my life decided I didn’t match the outward appearance they deemed acceptable and they started to ditch me, boys/ men made awful comments on my appearance, so The Smiths songs said what I felt, takes me right back to my bedroom, feeling unloved and alone God what a time! 😬☹️

So many great songs, perhaps go to 'Barbarism Begins at Home'
You guys are good guys. You give music outside of your tastes a chance.
Btw...try The Smiths' track 'Barbarism begins at home.'
Oh shit 😮 the songs a classic 💯🔥
The theme song from Charmed! :D
Noone mentioning Andy Rourke passed away recently
Noone mentioning how Morrissey has gone on to be a really nasty piece of work.
Just a total banger.
Morrissey has a huge amount of amazing songs, too.
