To be honest, I don't even think the biggest problem is that it was Ianto who died. Yes, I ship him and Jack heavily, but the problem that has risen is that they have killed off all the main characters except Gwen and Jack. Killing off characters happens, and can make the story move forward- however, the issue is that we are left with little to work with. With everyone dead, Gwen pregnant and Jack giving up and running away, the show should have ended there unless someone is brought back.
blackenedangel13 yeah. Gwen was our entry into the show, but by season 2 she was just a thing that was there. She was the least likeable character save Owen, she would’ve been the one to kill off and leave Tosh and Ianto, at the very least. Heartbreak works if it were set up that she was pregnant before, and Tosh and Ianto could’ve lived and we’d keep watching. I don’t really care if Owen dies because he was pretty much dead anyway.
Someone once said "no one ever truly dies in science fiction". Miracle Day performed extremely poorly. Many people stopped watching after Ianto's death all together. It's entirely possible, I think, that they'd bring in a bunch of viewers by bringing him (and Tosh and Owen) back from the dead.
I cried so hard when he died then my mom walked say next to me and asked if A) a boy friend dumped me or B) a friend of mine passed away I coutuned to cry told her Ianto died then she ask how close to that freind i was and when his funeral would be and I had to explain he was on a show called torch wood she proceeded to look at me shake her head and walk out of my room XD
Thanks for sharing. It's so sad; Jack and Ianto were so perfect together. I wish they had shown more of Jack going through the grieving process as a way for him and all of us to say good bye to Ianto.
Oh my gosh same I just found this video for the first time and all these emotions from forever ago came rearing back up 😢😢 I never thought of that kiss Jack gave you Ianto in that way... I can’t believe John is playing me like this in 2020
The danger in this show is that it's one thing to kill off one or two characters. At that point it's tragic. But what worries me is that the show has killed off pretty much everyone and there's fewer and fewer characters to root for. Then the people they add to the story will never really compare to Ianto, Tosh and Owen. You want heartbreak, but too much heartbreak makes your audience callus to the whole thing and less involved. It's like the Sopranos and who gets wacked next.
@TheMoonFellinLove The thing is, Ianto didn't have to die. They could have killed off Gwen and gotten the same result-Jack would have been willing to sacrifice his grandson either way. Davies says that they killed off ianto to show that no one is safe from the hazards of their job, but all it does is show that only Gwen is safe from death. Every single Torchwood employee has died EXCEPT Gwen. They would have made a better point if they had killed her off and let a more minor character live.
Briandon Stark no, kill her and no one cares. She was the entry point, but now she’s just like the rest of them. She knows all the secrets, she’s not needed. You don’t need her soul because Ianto also cries when people are dying, more so, even. They could’ve done so much more with Ianto because even now we know nothing about him, and he was building up his relationship with Jack whereas Gwen’s story was going nowhere. She argued with Rys, which was going on the whole series. Her dying while she’s pregnant even works with the story, Ianto’s death was pointless and the show is so much worse without him, and Tosh and Owen. Gwen is the worst character in the show and they kill off everyone but her, it’s just dumb. Pointless and dumb. Ianto was a better character and people liked him more, his death ruined the show. Gwen’s death would’ve made more sense and been a better direction for the story to go in.
In 2023 still, i cry when i watch the death of Ianto, it is the most unjust and sad death. Whitout Ianto, Torchwood lost his soul, i will never forget this character who marked me for his touching side and also for the beautiful couple he forms with Jack Harkness. Justice for Ianto !
Same, I’m still not over it 😅🥲 The show should have ended after CoE. There’s only so many beloved characters you can kill off without the show losing its soul and after CoE it did lose its soul imho (also, Ianto is still to this day my favourite fictional character 😅). I’m not really interested in a solo-Gwen reboot either (as it has been suggested a couple times). I like Gwen, but not enough to watch a whole show of just her.
@@Elkendrien ahh I'm reassured to see that I'm not the only one to find his death unfair fifteen years later, As for a series with only Gwen I don't feel it as much even if I like Gwen. as far as getting a new team in i think with Doctor Who it is a completely different thing because no matter who plays the Doctor he is still The Doctor, still the same character at heart. and as far as it being the Gwen show I'm only halfway through the first season but i really don't feel any connection to Gwen, whether its the acting or the writing or what. i think Torchwood has a good base but somehow it doesn't pull it off. Like the Countryside episode could have been so much more emotional

I hate RTD for killing of Ianto... Ianto, by far is my favourite character, and I LOVE Gareth David-Lloyd and Ianto Jones, both their characters are just amazing, without a doubt. I agree with Silverwolflucky, I don't think I'll watch Series 4 if they find a new "i-candy" We love you Ianto :D

@TheMoonFellinLove It wasn't necessary for Ianto to die for Jack to sacrifice his grandson. We already know that Jack makes those difficult choices because he knows he has to (i.e Small Worlds). RTD just didn't like the fact that more people were identifying with the character that wasn't the one he wanted them identifying with. He should be happy now, because Torchwood season 4 isn't really Torchwood. It's Excalibur (look it up), which is what he wanted in the first place.

I don't know what's going on in writers' rooms these days. Now actual death is the only thing that writers think can motivate plot and generate emotion. Junior high school thinking
I was actually thinking the same thing as John when I watched it for the first time! I mean, if you look at the 1st series episode "Cyberwoman" he does bring him back to life! (Okay, maybe he just resuscitates him, but that's not what I think!!!) I was actually yelling at the television "COME ON JACK, KISS HIM!!! BRING HIM BACK TO LIFE!!" I have never cried so much at a character death. Ever. In my life!!!!!!

You two weren't alone who cried. We all were /there/ with you - actors or characters, in moments like these it really doesn't matter. I lost it too, John, and EVEN sooner that you two did, knowing what's gonna happen. (After Ianto's "I love you" I was praying to not any nonswimmer come in my room - gallons and gallons of tears, really; actually whole the third season)
I love John Barrowman, he is just such a lovely person and he is so understanding and respectful of his fans. Plus how awesome is it that he calls himself a geek and shares his love of the show and characters as much as we do?
I watched episode 5 right after episode 4 and I was crying so hard I couldn't see the screen until a third of the way into the 5th episode. They had better bring Ianto back.
well done characters do die all the time in fiction but all of the people who want ianto back only do it because they understand the relationship between jack and ianto. they feel all the pain and heartache that jack went through because they began to grow an emotional attachment to ianto i want them all back . bring them all back IS a writer taking risks because they could lose alot of veiwers by doing so but they have already lost alot by killing them i of course value your opinion :)
@LondonSkiies Worst part is that that won't happen. The description for Series 4 is "the only thing that could bring Jack back to earth is his unstated love for Gwen" ):< BOOOOOOOOO!
Reading all these comments, I feel the need to defend the writers. I cried and hated when Ianto died, but that's what writers have to do. They create lovable characters that the audience will cherish, then put them in the worst situations. They took him away because everybody wanted him to continue living. So good move on the writers part, and I hope they don't bring him back otherwise his death would be useless. I only have one request: Please don't make a new 'eye candy' for Jack!!
And gripping and horrifying but somehow it just missed it's mark and i have no idea why. I really really want to like Torchwood because i like Jack but somehow its just not grabbing me the way Doctor Who has.
thanx for this one, really appreciated :) seems JB still is really is into this (after this long time since shooting) ...means he can comprehend some of those Fan-Feelings about this charackter (and YES its only a charakter) dying. meanwhile I'm fine with everything they did to TW so far... Another, even better season will be great too!
That's weird. I never actually thought Jack was kissing him to revive him. To me, it was like a goodbye... ? (or maybe my tears were to thick and I didn't see properly). I'm sure Gwen will make a new team with Lois and some new man we don't know. She'll get into trouble, and Jack will come back to save the day. And Ianto should stay dead. bUt a flashback would be nice... I'll miss GDL.
Couldn't help but laugh at the overblown backlash Ianto's death received, a show run by Russell T. Davies is fairly unlikely to be discriminatory towards gay people. I thought it was brilliant, an unexpected shock in the middle of Children of Earth, well performed by both actors and beautifully sad.
They need to bring Ianto back. Use the glove, get the Doctor, call on Bad Wolf, do SOMETHING!!!
ShadeSlayer1911 both gloves were destroyed

Turn the tardis into a paradox machine and go back in time + retrieve it before its destroyed :")
I read the second sentence in Eve's voice to John.

I still haven't worked up the courage to watch CoE...I got through season 1+2, then saw CoE was next, and I just stopped...
I'm gonna have to watch this series again. He loses me mid-way through his explanation.
I need therapy now
Hm, two and a half years later and I still cry when I watch that.
YOu can watch up to day 3 then be like me and refuse...LOL with out day 3 Ianto is still alive
omg torchwood at comiccon
Oh godamnit
IANTO! D: DON'T GO! D:
@LondonSkiies Worst part is that that won't happen. The description for Series 4 is "the only thing that could bring Jack back to earth is his unstated love for Gwen" ):< BOOOOOOOOO!
:(
Everybody, don't hate on Gwen, she was a good character. So was Ianto. That's really all it is. Good characters.
I love that Euros immediately tries to lighten the mood
I was born on the 13th too! So cool.
My heart aches every episode from day four on.
I love how he calls himself a fangeek.
LOL!!! that is very funny!!! XD
My mom was born on Friday the 13th, too!
ITS SO SAAAADD.
@jackthayer you're so right
i can't wait to see the gwen show!!!
@1963Daleks D:
probably arguing with Satan.
Because no companions have ever died in Doctor Who. ;)
I really really want to like Torchwood because i like Jack but somehow its just not grabbing me the way Doctor Who has.
thanx for this one, really appreciated :)
seems JB still is really is into this (after this long time since shooting)
...means he can comprehend some of those Fan-Feelings about this charackter (and YES its only a charakter) dying.
meanwhile I'm fine with everything they did to TW so far...
