- When Clare Reay’s son bought her a MyHeritage DNA test, she hoped to discover a little about her mother’s ethnic background.
She never imagined that the test would lead her to solve the mystery of her mother’s origins and find the sisters who had been searching for her for more than 50 years.
Their moving virtual reunion was captured on this segment of the TODAY Show.

I think the worst thing for a parent is to not know what happened to your baby. I can’t even imagine.
Not knowing is worse, yes.
Amazing the child survived because they were usually immediately gassed. She must have been carefully protected by someone.
Can we imagine what it was like for mothers to give their babies to strangers to save them from death. When they were forced to march, a lot of people abandoned their own.

I cannot imagine her pain wondering what became of her baby and never knowing what those monstrous Nazis did to her. Some people live with unimaginable horror and sorrow.
So many babies and young children died in the gas chambers. Out of so many doomed children someone saved Eva. I wonder who and why. Perhaps that person also saved other babies and children.
Such unimaginable pain. Almost impossible to see this video to the end. A mother and her daughter looking for each other all of their lives. So heartbreaking.
I think the Mom knew her daughter was looking for her and that’s why that picture held so much meaning to her. She felt that love. A mother’s love is amazing. They are together now. ❤️

My late husband's father was a survivor of Auschwitz. He was the only one in his family (except for some distant cousins) to survive the Holocaust. It warms my heart to see this reunion. I know Mother and her first born are together again and watching this reunion, because my husband has certainly found many ways to let me know his spirit is alive and well on the other side and that he's totally plugged into what I, and his other loved ones are up to on this side of the veil.

This is just beautiful. My babcia and Dzia dzia Met in a concentration camp ..Once free they married and had three children, one of them being my mum. They came over to Australia on a large ship in 1952 when my mum was 3. They ended up having another son in Australia. My grandfather actually jumped off a moving train with his best buddy the first time he was captured by the Germans. The train was taking them to a concentration camp . They found an old German widow who lived in a house and she fed them and gave them clothes from her deceased husband so they could get out of their prison garb. They continued their trek back to Poland the next day and sadly my Dzia dzia's best friend stood on a land mine and got blown to bits. If was a heartbreaking time in World History, and it shows how close I came to not being here .
My Oma and Opa met before the war. Opa was captured and taken to a concentration camp. I don’t know which one. They never spoke about the details of any of it. After the war he got back to Holland and they found each other again, got married and had 3 girls. My mum was the youngest and was born in 1952. In 1956, they came to Australia on a ship too. They lived in a single garage, all 5 of them, for a couple of years while Opa built their house.
My Dad’s side is Italian. His father emigrated, and his mother’s parents emigrated. So my grandmother was born here and my Dad was born here. If my grandparents had listened to their parents they wouldn’t have married, but they eloped.
My mum and her eldest sister looked very alike. My Dad met them both at a dance and asked one of them out. He wasn’t certain which one. My auntie ended up becoming a nun. So many single decisions in all of that which would have resulted in me not being here if the other decision was made, so I completely understand what you mean!
This widow was another unknown hero, a Human being. Just among the Justs. My prayers for her.
I lived & worked on a kibbutz, in Nahariya, Israel, built by Auschwitz survivors in the late 80's. One particular time in town eating falafels,, an older women heard us speaking English she took my arm with her left hand & said "Never forget", as i looked at her arm on my arm i saw the serial numbers printed on the skin of her left forearm. I will never forget that.
How sad that her mother died before knowing what happened but at least her daughters found out what happened.
I can relate to this story. My parents and my brother passed away without knowing the whereabouts of my brothers only son. My family is blessed to have finally found him in 2015, after over 40 years. We are all happy he is in our lives.
We had a reunion after 70 years. Moishe was 15 when the Nazis took him. He had carpentry skills learned from his father's lumber business which the Nazis forced him to use in many concentration camps. After the war he could not find any family, neither immediate nor extended and he regretted that he did not even have a picture of his parents. He lived until 90 not having found family. Two years after he died his son found me. My hobby was genealogy. I was researching my town, Kielce, of which there were two PRAJS families, one related to mine, but not the other. I happened to be working on a Kielce project with PRAJS from the other family. Moishe's son, Chaim, contacted her first. She said he was not related to her so he must be related to me. Sure enough, my PRAJS's were in the lumber business in Kielce, and there was only one lumber company in Kielce! We shared the same family stories and names!!! What is more, I knew that my bubby had photos of the other branches of the PRAJS's, yes, I had Moishe's family photo, when he was ten, with his murdered parents, brothers and sisters. Chaim had been Mr. Israel in body building, cried for a week.

My dads cousin died when he was in his mid thirties. He had 5 kids. They were adopted when their mom remarried and were told that all their dads family was gone. Which obviously wasn’t true. Fast forward 53 years later. I was doing research on my family tree as I hadn’t seen my father in 27 years and knew very little about his side of the family. In my research I found names and info on what would be my second cousins. Long story short I reunited the 5 with their first cousins. Hopefully after covid is done we will all meet

That’s neat! Sadly, my late husband’s family cut my and my kids off when he died. 😢. No explanation at all; we were just cut off. I lost half of my family when I lost him.

What a beautiful story I’m not Jewish but what hitler did to the Jewish people was terrible. Being a retired 47 yr healthcare worker life is precious and should never be cast away like spoiled garbage. I am so happy to have stubbled on to this story it’s great god bless you all ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🌈🌈🌈
I am German, but my grandfather emigratet to South-West-Africa in 1904 and my mothers father died in 1927, so I am happy that I can say that my grandfathers were not involved with this terrible cruel war! This is really heartbreaking. I can't understand how the Germans all ran after this crazy man!

I am in the USA, and it took over 40 years to find a nephew under totally different circumstances. I imagine how much more difficult it was for this family to find a loved one. Many blessings. Family is a blessing and the anguish of not knowing is a life of sadness, anger, anxiety and it will consume you with heartache. So happy these lovely ladies have found each other.
They would have found each other on the other side, can you imagine the party.

Wow, this is such a great story. It is unfortunate that DNA testing/My Heritage were not available sooner to allow the mother to find the daughter she knew in her heart was still alive something in the world.

They are very lucky to found each other since many Jews never saw their family again if they survived. My family believes that all of our family who stayed in Russia died in the Shoah which was almost all of our family at the time. It would be amazing to find out that someone who survived and is living in Europe, Israel, or the US. It would also be quite sad to know that our family was all alone and it would be hard to know that they also moved to the US (where my great-grandparents moved) and we never knew they were so close. I'm so sorry for all the pain that family has felt and I understand the pain of having your family taken from you.
Keep checking through Yad Vashem and the U.S. Holocaust Museum database but unfortunately there were so many mass killings by the Nazis and their collaborators such as the Babi Yar Massacre where there were no meticulous records of name kept. Hopefully G"d willing there you will find a desecendant of someone that managed to survive.

This story and ending is bittersweet for all involved. The mother that carried that child in her heart and never gave up her search is heartbreaking. I am so happy that the 2 remaining sisters have found thier niece. Mam can see it all, along with the beautiful daughter that she is reunited with, all from the other side.
The atrocities carried out on human beings by human beings is so overwhelming. Be kind to each other, life is short.

This is so wonderful to see and I’m so happy for them. I’ve had a similar but not so intense reconnection. My dad and his sister are estranged and I was able to find my cousin on social media. It’s funny because she reminds me so much of my grandparents who she hasn’t seen since she was a toddler (they were estranged). I helped to reconnect them, but it felt like I knew her all my life. It’s so wonderful to find family you never had, and to feel the connection. If you are looking for someone, never give up.
It’s very painful for me to ever imagine that for the past years they’d been searching each other till they passed away. It’s heart-wrenching knowing so many have gone through similar trauma due to the holocaust. Never again!

That accursed war and the havoc it wreaked! I'm glad these ladies found each other. I just wish it could have been sooner. 💔
It angers me how people were treated. Millions of people lost their lives, families, & well being. There was no need for any of this. I can't imagine what people went through in these concentration camps. I'm just sick. I briefly teach about the holocaust in school every year to my elementary students but I never really thought about how the babies were stolen from their mothers.
May it also angers me when there are some people who do not want to teach our children that the holocaust existed and that Hitler was a devil killing millions of innocent people just because he hated them. This cannot be repeated never ever again, but the only one is by teaching the children at school what happened.
It was all so tragic but the most horrible part was the loss of all the children. So innocent and the horrible things that happened to them are just sick and evil. I think if you do some research into this you will find a whole other side to this story. Maybe you can teach your students to really connect with the Holocaust by drawing parallels between them and victims near their age? In Israel at the Holocaust museum (Yad Vashem), there is the memorial to the murdered children and it is breathtaking and just heart wrenching. Bless you for teaching kids about the Holocaust. Never again.

Very touching, heart breaking story of Dora and her daughter Eva, who was separated from her mom Dora, at the concentration camp.
Dora survived the war and lived till 1996, but was never able to find Eva or to know whether or not Eva was alive!!
