  • There's a lot of aftermarket coils on Ebay advertised to fit Homelite Super XL chainsaws...this video shows what happens when you use the wrong coil. The coil & flywheel must be a matched set or your saw will not run properly, if at all. After the shop work, we take a trip to Ebay and find ONE seller that has the proper coils for both Phelon & Wico electronic ignition.

    I am glad I don’t have to worry about different model coils, because on a Stihl saw if it fits, it will work. If I have an ignition problem, I just get a new coil from EBay and crank it right up.

      It makes sense but men must be men! We have a sentence in Bulgaria :"He who is afraid of the bear does not go into the forest." Don't touch a chainsaw if you are afraid of injury.

    I'm glad you did this try and see. I'm having fits with blue Prestolite coils like everybody else. I have 2 or three saws with Phelon electronic too. Haven't had one of those mess up yet.....Trying to get multiple saws XL12 AND SXL back to work.

      Just thinking: I converted 1970,s Sachs MC's failed electronic systems to points from older 1960's engines. Holes were all there in the casing. Is that possible with the saws?

    • @johnnorman7708
      @johnnorman7708 3 года назад +1

      @@613kc Leon mentioned that crankshafts on the later Homelite electronic saws didn't even have the lobes to actuate the points anymore. That would have given us options.

    Today was a rainy day. So I went to my shop and drug out some Xl 12s. dads old saw he bought new in the 60.s it had the wick fuel system, I drug that felt out of the tank. It was making spark. So i removed the muffler. the piston was scored and had a broken ring. So i installed the piston and cyl from a XL12 automatic. also the carb and fuel line. Used the red start rope and cover. So Its now running its a hodge podge of some original blue parts and some newer red parts. Bigger cyl so its now 58 CC. Seems to run Ok. I will try it out tomorrow.

      I wondered about using a SXL top end on an XL12 rebuild.The extra power certainly wouldn't hurt anything, and I'm seeing more SXL pistons rings and cylinders on Ebay these days than XL12 anyway.

    I convert the blue coil saws to a points setup. Using a points flywheel and coil and a module or using the wico flywheel with the lamination from the prestolite coil in a points coil which can be a tight fit but it works. I even used a super 2 coil in an xl76 works great. The key is the lamination have to match the flywheel due to the gap in the magnet and polarity of magnet can be reversed. The coil doesn't really matter as long as it fits

    I figures out i have a "points" ignition, any chance you know what value the condensor in it is ?
    in another of your videos you said " .25 " is where it should be, but what units is that ? micro Farads perhaps ? with the symbol 'uF' on the multimeter ?

    Those after market coils in my experience are always junk sooner or later, Leon worked on my SXL last year for similar issue. I bought the proline or some other after market coil and saw run great for about 20 minutes then died and wouldn't start anymore. Leon ended up confirming my suspicion that the aftermarket coil was dead and he found me a oem blue one that he baked and installed and now my saw runs great. This is 2nd time I have tried aftermarket coils 1 proline and another south african branded one and they usually die on you. Mine are all wico though not phelon I'm sure they're equally bad for either version.
