An amazing playthrough, and as always, an immense pleasure from having Cole at the table! It shows when Cole is really enthusiastic about his games, and I am so happy we got to see that :) I would very much love to see another take on this, hopefully with Alyssa on board as well.
Holy hell..what a beast of a game. Can’t wait to get my copy. PS: I love how Cole says he’ll provide a compact teach and then goes into full detail on all almost all elements with a teach that goes over an hour.
Yeah, the teach on this game is what makes me worried about its accessibility. I love the look and gameplay of it and the historic aspect of the game. Really well designed, but if it takes the game designer an hour to go over the rules, it will be tough to bring on new players to this. I am not sure it is a game that can really be taught via a game master directing and dictacring each aspect of the rules along the way as you are playing it.
I've taught this game a few times, takes me about 30 min with a rolling teach. Think Cole explained in much detail here, which is useful for a video to fully understand the game but not as a style of teach fpr this.
@@Cloggington when you do a rolling teach for this game do you get a lot of questions from players along the way and do you find yourself having to keep adding additional rule information along the way? Just seems like a lot of rules to get across for a rolling teach.
@@stephenwyda2568 Throughout the teach, Cole is clear this is an HC-specific teach, and what he'd skim or skip. E.g., there is no need to talk about Commanders before Round 2. If you were to teach just the mechanics, it might only take 10-15 mins. Most rolling teaches get everything underway within 30 mins, by which point you've also played most or all of one turn. Questions come up, but most rules are very circumstantial in John Company. You don't need to know the rules for Commanders, India events, etc. while the Manager of Shipping is taking their turn, for instance.
@@stephenwyda2568 As Cole said himself - that's nor how you teach JC. The fact that the turn is divided into very distinct phases where the individual phases don't need that much individually, makes it straightforward to teach while going through the first turn.
The round 2 parliament phase here is just JoCo2E at its best. Even though Shrey is the least experienced player on the table, he found himself in a position of immense leverage as both Cole and Edward really need his votes, making for some really interesting discussion and in-theme dealmaking. Just good stuff.
Oh I preordered this one and can't wait its arrival, thank you so much for shooting this video. Will have a great time with it :) Hope you had fun with the new edition as well :)
Awesome stream. I really liked the 1st edition stream from some time ago, but this newer edition looks much better components-wise. I will probably pick up a copy. Please, please, please stream this game again. Very entertaining.
What a way to play the game - with the designer! Excited to try this one out with my group. Thank you for the high quality setup and play through. Now I wish I got the metal coins!
Played our first game tonight, after rewatching this. Great game, so glad we got it to the table, and so glad i watched this first. Made the rolling teach so much easier and probably about 10 times better.
Played this, this afternoon for the first time. Enjoyed it, but we definitely made mistakes so came here to check the rules teach. Hadn't intended on watching the whole thing but it's now 2am and I have work in the morning... but that's a tomorrow problem!
Thanks for the stream Edward and thanks for the teach Cole! Can't wait to receive it this fall. But it will be a tough one for the basic crowd in the game group.
Such an awesome session! You guys really sold just how fun and interactive I’ve been hoping it will be when my group gets their hands on it. Solid work as usual. 👍
There is a major misunderstanding of probabilities here. It is not 80 vs 87% success being 7% more. It is actually 20% failure vs 13% failure, thus a reduction of 35% of all failure cases. Humans are terrible correctly valuing probabilities. Technically, you need to assign the potential outcomes an expected value to correctly assess the situation. When you do the first role for two regions, and you roll dice for an outcome of 18 pounds, the expected outcome of 80 vs 87% is 14.4 vs 15.6. So even after spending an extra pound, 14.4 vs 14.6 always favors 5 dice and the extra pound for the costs, and greatly increases success rates!
This was such an incredible teach and play through, thank you so much for both aspects! I went into the video already really interested to one day try out JoCo, And over the course of a few days picking out the video whenever I had time to sink my teeth (and my brain) into it, I came out the other side having ordered the game online! Can’t wait to start having some of the ridiculous scenarios that I saw and you talked about afterwards with my own game groups!
Unless Cole visited the UK before 15th February 1971 he would have encountered five new pence pieces rather than shillings - just saying! Enjoyed the play through and looking forward to gaming with my own copy.
My game group is a little bit too petty (me included) to play negotiation games, but I really like this one. I love how the game became a co op at the end, I'm always fond of games that can create multiple stories.
Unique game! Clever design, interesting, very thematic and satisfying. I think this is the best of all the 'Pax' games, and they are all good. Looking forward to your 2nd edition of 'An Infamous traffic' (and I hear interesting rumours of a 'Pax Romanum' game?)
Had a really hard time following the teach and was so confused. I usually don't mind complex games, but this was losing me. Until they started playing :o. I need to try this now!
At @46:21 regarding the assignment of commanders that have been outnumbered, Cole mentions that in case of tie it goes to the previous player. Can anybody tell me what he meant? If I'm reading the rules correctly, in case of a tie the Military Affairs player chooses any officer from the tied players.
this looks great, too bad i haven't had the money to back it when it was on the kickstarter, hopefully there'll be copies to get after the first deliveries
I just can't get it on 2:49:27 You deploy to the Company region successfully from the second attempt to clear the orders and suppress the unrest. But you did nothing of that, but just somehow took the money for the loot for the military, when there was obviously no loot in the region left, since it already belongs to the Company?
Anybody have the link for that discord server Cole mentioned? I'd love to play a game or two before my pledge arrives and I'm tasked with teaching others.
Hi Cole! I think a lot of people asked you this already but I never seen the answer. Is there a reason why the dice checks look for the smallest result instead of going the other way around and making a five or six good?
@@colewehrle8718 sounds logical! can't our brain recognize up to the number 5 at once, while we have to start consciously counting from 6 on? Think i read it in Kahnemanns 'Thinking slow, thinking fast'. My copy of JC arrived a couple of days ago, looks wonderful, beautiful work, thank you :)
Question... During Round 2 revenue, when you had to take an emergency loan to pay for expenses. Company balance was on 7 and your expenses were 9. Taking a Company Loan would have put you on 12, would it not? Then you pay your 9 expenses to leave you on a Company Balance of 3, not 0.
Ahh I've just seen the line in the rules at the end of the Emergency Loans explaination that says "Finally, set the Company Balance to zero." I guess this is a penalty to taking an unexpected loan?
3:26:08 Successful Invasion of Madras would have opened all orders there to allow a 4 length trade route into Mysore, unfortunately Shrey rolled poorly despite 5 dice.
30 min rundown and then learn as you go imo, the game components does a superb job at guiding and aiding players along. Its a game with a lot of moving parts but surprisingly simple and intuitive rules. Mostly!
I think you missed the governor bonus in the second round for Edward. You taxed the country for 2 pounds but if I understood the rules correctly Edward should also receive 2 pounds for his family due to the previous roll being a failure.
question," President of madras" candidates both writers and the governor need to be associated with this presidency, or only the governor need to be associated with this Presidency
Shrey wins the game and rolled the worst, had no bonuses and was never a governor. The only company setup was overthrown immediately. Worst. Company. Ever.
If you're in THAT bad of a shape as they are in Turn 3, there is no reason to NOT take on max debt. The company must not fail, and any emergency loans will make you fail anyway. Go big or go home, clear out India. It is naive to tank the company when you're not really ahead.
