I really like your Lathe design! However as a former Neon glass blower I suggest that after you've heated to glowing glass to mate your tubing or wire that you turn off the rotation while the glass is still very hot and semi plastic so you don't build-in microstress's due to vibrations/alignment while its spinning well before it cools to becoming crystalline rigid.
I was also taught to never pick up glass too soon because even non glowing glass CAN give you a 3rd degree burn INSTANTLY. If impatient, lay a piece of paper across it and see if it browns first, that way you'll only get a 2nd degree burn.

    cool

Very cool. Question: if the metal were prepared properly, would this form a hermetic seal?

The easiest DIY way to make meta-to-glass hermetic seals is via RECYCLING hermetic seals themselves.
Every incandesent bulb, and every Vacuum tube contains wires made of the perfect metal alloy - you safely break the bulb in a thick plastic bag, and then crunch up the base with pliers until you get down to the part with the wires, then carefully crush away the remaining glass with a flat jaw (leather) vise or pliers to get as many wires as you wish. If you do this carefully on larger (8-pin/Octal) tubes you can even extract the pair of wires on pin 2, and pin 7 attached to the Filament intact and use it again!

@@joeteejoetee so you wanna break perfectly good light bulbs for a Dr Frankensteins lightbulb? I need you to stop & think about what your saying b4 saying it

Adding to what joeteejoetee said, you can use zener diodes as prefabricated glass to metal seals

@@theevilvegetablepatch9873 He is not talking about making a light bulb, he is talking about making a diy vacuum tube. These were used in yesteryear televisions and radios. There are still many uses today for vacuum tubes, mainly in the high power broadcast industry.

Good work Sir, I too am experimenting on re-manufacturing power vacuum tubes with some success, only triodes as yet and then only heater replacement. Hardest part for me was getting the carbon content of the tungsten correct. The thorium content didn`t appear to be too far off when using welding electrode wire. Found your videos ages ago when looking up Housekeeper seal. Subscribed!

so you use a welding tig rod as the electrode? how do you prevent the stress and the correct adhesion to the glass? thanks!!

@@georgeyork8975 Sorry, only just seen this comment. The tubes are antique, copper external anodes and glass envelope for the heater and grid connections. The seals are kovar. The internal wires are steel spot welded to the welding electrode cathode. The cathode is 0.5mm diam (thoriated tungsten welding electrode), bent into a hairpin. The envelope was large enough in length to be cut and re worked. If you are experimenting with this, you will need some method to infuse carbon into the outer layers of the cathode. This for me involves heating the cathode in a hydrogen atmosphere and adding small amounts of a hydrocarbon. Benzine or acetylene works well. You can calculate the depth of penetration by monitoring the resistance of the cathode wire, it will increase with more penetration. Keyword for the Googler - carburised thoriated tungsten, kovar glass to metal seal.
