About 8 years ago I was visiting the bay area and I took a day trip to Oakland. I accidentally wandered into the Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt. It is truly an amazing place! The trees are astonishing! The weird thing is that nobody was there. I was completely alone. I didn't see any staff anywhere! I stayed for about an hour, walking around and taking pictures. Truly remarkable place and I hope to return again one day.
Janet, you are as special as the bonsai you oversee :) Thank you, to all involved, for this tour. Also, the watering system for the trees on display is a work of art in itself.
Thank you Jason for enabling those of us on the other side of the US to experience these wonderful bonsai gardens in California. What a labor of dedication by so many over so many years. They have a great curator and teacher in Kathy Shaner.
Stunning garden. And the watering system has inspired me to try one of my own. Is there a name to the ‘tap’ end off the copper pipe. Never seen that kind of fitting.
Those are very nice misters/sprinkler heads and irrigation system. What brand/kind are those? I’m currently renovating my entire yard with new pebbles/gravel and also a new (generic and common) soak/drip-irrigation system... but I think those mister heads would be way better.
Some years ago through the Napa bonsai club I was invited to visit a collection in Berkeley. There was a 400 year old black pine. I wonder if this one is the same tree in that collection. Yes/no anyone? Thanks.
I like when she explains about styling and other general information about the trees, Jason stays quite instead of saying I know (which we all knows he does)... humble & respectful ...most of the trees i realy liked, she didn't focus on 😔
Hi Jason love your videos. Hope to visit you in Chino soon. I live in San Pedro and was just given a small Chinese elm. I would like to know if I can keep this outside or would I need to bring inside for winter.
Hello Jason great video I have a question my chinese elm bonsai is not growing new leaves and it's a indoor bonsai please help thanks keep up the great work
Definitely. It probably needs it. However, I do know some artists that never repot their trees and their trees have a lot of character. It's up to you! -Jason
I would contact the garden and ask. I just went online and found the phone number. Since it is all volunteers you might have to leave a message and wait for a call back. (510) 763-8409
Amazing garden, even more impressive is the unity and the common love for the art by these various bonsai clubs. Here in India it's just a business, one can't even get a response out of the national bonsai association. Shameful really...
Precious Metal Head as I understood her the ones on top spray the foliage and those don’t really water the roots but that’s why they have the lower, more focused spouts. Like most automatic systems some additional personal hands on watering is ideal. A beautiful display of that size would be impossible to do any other way so I commend their brilliant work.
Wait didn't Bonsai originate from China why is it then a bonsai garden is called a Japanese garden, interesting. Just for thought don't want to start a debate on the topic but feel free to comment
Fairly certain the concept of a tree in a small pot was Japanese. They took the idea off the Chinese who made miniature landscapes out of live tree and objects. Japanese just condensed the idea of landscape (much like warhammer 4000 and other roleplayers) to just a tree in a pot.
It makes me sad seeing those ugly sprinklers above and beside the bonsai trees. Real bonsai enthusiasts will always hand water each bonsai and at the same time inspect each tree.

Hello Jason great video I have a question my chinese elm bonsai is not growing new leaves and it's a indoor bonsai please help thanks keep up the great work
What do you mean, it's not growing new leaves?
Karliah it's not getting any new growth instead all the leaves are turning yellow and falling off
Touch the soil, does it feel dry often? Yellow leaves with black spots might be from lack of water
Karliah I feel like I'm over watering it
I water it every morning and every night
Keeping bonsai is a good healing for mental stress and depression
Muito bom. TOP.
Hey Jason you should work on a Japanese maple
😮👍👍👍
After remaining in a pot for almost say for 15 years...Is it possible to repot the tree ...
Definitely. It probably needs it. However, I do know some artists that never repot their trees and their trees have a lot of character. It's up to you! -Jason
veryy gooodt
I have a 40 year old bonsai dwarf Scheflera I would like to donate. Would the garden be interested? It has a fantastic root system.
I would contact the garden and ask. I just went online and found the phone number. Since it is all volunteers you might have to leave a message and wait for a call back. (510) 763-8409
Yes, the Bonsai Garden welcomes donations. Contact them at bonsailakemerritt@gmail.com.

What's a bone sigh?

Everyone here should check out the trees of Michael Rinnerhofer. Thank me later.

Turned off video as soon as I saw the old wacko with blue hair.
A rather dumb and off topic comment. Judgemental much?
@@swarfmaster GFY! You're part of the problem

The Japanese refined the bonsai art form in their own style.

His lips are chapped
Great garden. Terrible camera work. Hold the camera still on the plant...whilst the person talks..
