For those who are worried, If your computer does not have CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor on it, you will be fine and can continue installing Windows updates. Only systems with the Falcon Sensor were impacted.
Where would someone have gotten the falcon sensor?
@@rtcurtis5858 Its services for major businesses, not generally for home use
The blue screen will mention csagent.sys. Note many machines are fixable by restarting but many are not.
What is the Falcon Sensor?
@@charliesretrocomputing It's part of the CrowdStrike software. It's a security service you have to pay for, so normal users do not have this installed on their computers. It's mostly used in companies.
Thank you for saving me from the long queue at the IT Department this morning!

Didn't require the info but watched anyways. Thanks for the video to help others. I feel for those that don't or didn't know about Bitlocker stuff. Add: I keep calling it Counterstrike. All the best, Computer Guy!
LOL I did the same thing when filming this morning 😂
I'm okay (Jack) but thanks for sharing

I like him too!
Can't get into safe mode. Nothing to do with bitlocker. When I get to the page to hit 4/f4 to boot into safemode it goes to a blue screen and fails to do so, starts all over
That's not good. Safe mode is the most basic Windows functionality that runs with very few drivers. If you can't get into safe mode, you either have a hardware issue (I'd suspect RAM based on what you've said) or likely a damaged or corrupted Windows operating system
What if you can't even get to Advanced Options to get to safe mode? After repeated restarts, it's a dell optiplex 5060 I believe, I get some options but nothing about booting up. Finger banging f12 gets me to a menu with boot options but the one that should take me to the "Advanced Options" reverts to BSOD. Unfortunately, my company's help desk won't provide their image of windows to make a recovery drive to get to Windows RE..and I can't just use any other windows image
You could always wipe it clean and take the "company" out of it:
Wipe your hard drive and reinstall Windows CLEAN | remove all VIRUSES! Full walk thru

Mine stopped working a day or two after the problem, Is it still because of the Microsoft problem or is it something else?

Good deal. Please keep the community updated either way 👍
It pretty much only affected people with "managed" (by their company IT) computers, of whom many would not be able to reboot in safe mode.

Washington DC's Metro subway computer system and NBC4 Washington TV station were down. This is a global outage and affects both Windows 10 and Windows 11
Millions of people depending on a single file... That's incredible!
All operating systems rely on some individual but essential files to work. It such a file gets corrupted the system cannot continue (at least the instance the user is using). It's how the operating system handles the inevitable shutdown that differs (just crash or a more ordered shutdown) and in my experience MS Windows is the least sophisticated of the lot.
Not all operating systems rely on single files to operate successfully, but most modern operating systems have essential files that are critical for their functionality. If one of these essential files gets corrupted, the impact can vary depending on the file's role and the operating system's design. In windows, most critical ones are:
kernel (ntoskrnl.exe), the bootloader (bootmgr), registry hives (SYSTEM, SOFTWARE, etc.), and various system DLLs (e.g., kernel32.dll, user32.dll). I understand if one of them gets corrupted to get a BSOD, but not for this one, It was under a specific folder inside windows32/drivers...
Agreed!
Luckly we didn't install the latest windows update on our servers and computers but thank you anyway !

Start here, this might help you get back into Windows:
How to fix ANY Windows problem with the built-in repair tool
ruclips.net/video/i-QHtJGAXgI/видео.html
It was a pretty simple fix actually. You just need to do a billion times.
Can somebody please fact check this for me: CrowdStrike allows admins to set a policy of performing client updates to n-1 or n-2:
If an organization had set their update policy to n-1 or n-2, they would have been using a previous version of the update rather than the latest one that caused the issue.
Given that the issue was isolated to the most recent update, using an earlier version (n-1 or n-2) would likely have avoided the problematic update and thus prevented the outage.
None of my PC troubleshooting options are working, I can’t uninstall the updates because it says it ran into a problem, my safe mode sends me back to the blue screen every time and I can’t reset my pc because it keeps saying there was a problem resetting.
I would start with the troubleshooting steps I've outlined here:
How to fix ANY Windows problem with the built-in repair tool

you're the best bro... much love from Québec Canada🙏
Thank you, my friend! 👍
I have been getting blue screen again and again since that day. I am just an ordinary user that does not run a business but bizarely a blue screen event happened around the time the "bug" happened I was hit by a blue screen - since then everytime I try to repair whatever it is that is causing it I am unable to as somewhere along the way of the repair I get a blue screen and the "repair" gets interupted. Also I have been blocked by locks on certain folders which prevents the various functions used to repair "corrupted" folders. What I would like to know is whether the Croud strike event has affected the "Ordinary User" as well? I am totally confused as no on has said so and yet I see advice after advice on how to fix the issue. As far as I can make out I do not have Croud Strike on my computer.
Sorry to hear that. I'd start here and see if any of these troubleshooting steps help get you back into Windows:

In my pc crowdstrike file c-000000291*.sys no showing
The 15 reboots could be related to the crowdstike software itself deleting, modifying or deleting the file thus removing the problem.
Microsoft releases some of the dumbest advice ever publicly (sigh)
Why would this effect some but not others? My laptop was not on. Can I just boot up and deliberately avoid updates?
This only directly affected Windows users that connect to Enterprise managed servers (ie: larger companies). The majorly of Windows users aren't affected, but the global ripple affect is the people that use the services that these companies provide (credit card processing, air travel, emergency services, grocery chains, etc). So everyone will "feel" the pain for a bit even if your computer boots fine 👍
Got some damn VMs in a ESXi Cluster that dont get the startup options :S
This whole Crowdstrike issue really only applies to large business/companies/corporations that have Crowdstrike installed on their computers, not the average home user or small business, so therefore, those user-bases would not be affected.
For BitLocker, which should be used by large business/companies/corporations, the unlock code is only available through their IT departments. The average employee would not readily know the required code.
Agreed for the most part. Crowdstrike is used by 300 of the top 500 Forbes companies, but even my wife, who works for a smaller company, was affected. But yes, for the home user, likely not.
I have used safe mode and gotten in, but my computer has no crowdstrike folder or C-×××××× file
Then you are good to go!
Mine too, but still shows the BSOD
Then you should troubleshoot your system using Windows tools. Here's how: How to fix ANY Windows problem with the built-in repair tool

thanx for the fix, i'm not affected but its always useful, one question though, with my new laptop i've set up a local account, however, bitlocker did encrypt my OS drive, so i went to microsoft signed in, went to where the bitlocker codes are stored, but its empty
so if i ever have a problem i will need to install everything again, i didnt asked for my drive to be encrypted, and certainly not on a local account, do you gave a fix for that Dave? can i find my code on my computer? cheers mate
Create a Microsoft account on that pc, just to "connect" it to Microsoft. That will upload the key to your account. Once it's there, you can delete the Microsoft account 👍
You can easily decrypt your system via a command in the terminal as admin: 'manage-bde -off C:' After it finished double check: 'manage-bde -status C:'.
@D.von.N from my understanding, that still requires the BitLocker key to work
@@D.von.N tried it, didnt find any sort of key
@@AskYourComputerGuy It didn't need mine. I also found my used space on the disk encrypted without my knowledge or initiation. That command decrypted it, BEFORE I had any problems. Like the person asking about the bitlocker key and not being affected.
Why can’t I see startup settings? I have a “system image recovery” option instead
Do you have BitLocker enabled? I've seen that happen when BitLocker is enabled and then "skip drive" is selected at the recovery key prompt
@@AskYourComputerGuy yeah I do have bitlocker enabled
@realdudeperfect that's why you don't have all available options. Once you enter your key, you can get the troubleshooting menus as normal

Hi Scott, Some advice, please. A lot of friends of mine are asking me to go Linux. Would that be an option?
Linux is (and always has been) a good option...assuming that the things you do daily can be done on Linux. I'm actually making an upcoming video about exactly this! Basically it's a "could I switch from Windows to Linux for my daily pc?", taken from my perspective based on my needs, as well as the average user's needs. Should be interesting!

first of all, how the heck did you get crowdstrike falcon sensor on your personal computer not on your work computer. The software is not something that the public users can freely download and use. It's for business and stuff. You have to email them with your company/business to request a demo.

Why is my computer saying dsp or dps (it closes and shuts down fast so I can’t remember exactly) but says stop code watchdog.. it’s my 11 year old sons computer and he is devastated. It shuts down when trying to turn on and has a blue screen. It said that we had to wipe the hard drive so we did and now when we try to set the computer back up, it keeps showing the blue screen and shutting down before we can do anything except for English and try to connect the Wi-Fi. If your computer is booting normally, no. They are probably repaired updates and should be fine. If it's not booting correctly, yes.

I have three windows 11 computers. They run on windows 11 home version and I have yet to run into this problem. Where would I have picked up such a problem if I would’ve found it?
Through Microsoft 365 apps or a workplace connection to Microsoft cloud servers
Thanks for the video. I'm not affected to it. Maybe a Live cd with Windows 10 PE could have fixed the issue too, by deleting the file that way.? 🙂
Absolutely, as long as you either a) don't have BitLocker enabled or b) have your BitLocker key handy
i have a question, ehat do i do if i choose the option to boot into safe mode but it still gives me the blue screen?
If you can't boot into safe mode, you have bigger problems than this Crowdstrike issue. That's a basic core component of Windows that should always work. I'd recommend doing some Windows troubleshooting
I need help it doesn't allow me to input the product key
Do you mean the BitLocker recovery key?
What if you’re using Windows mobile?
Not sure but Windows is Windows, so I'd say it could still affect the mobile platform
I am one of the unfortunate ones that can’t fix this without my IT department as they have my C drive bit locked and I don’t have the key. Even better is that the IT department is out of state.
You have my sympathy...thankfully, you should still be getting paid while they get around to you 👍
I am affected by this issue and tried your fix, but every time I get to the drivers folder there seems to be no CrowdStrike folder. Yet I remain unable to log in to my computer. what should I do?
Look for that file name under just the drivers folder. If it doesn't exist, you might just need to try a system restore - it's worked for others

the problem with this BSOD is that it not letting me to a stage where I can get is rebooted. Any idea what I can do?
Also I am hereing eventually it will be fixed. The only way to know it fixed for an individual will that computer will be back started normal automatically?
Turn off/hard shutdown multiple times until you get the advanced repair option. May take 5-6 attempts but it eventually will come up. The update (rollback) may or may not happen because the file has to be removed or replaced, but that can't happen if you can't get online. This fix is the fastest solution for most people 👍

Negative. BitLocker encryption will still lock the drive down, regardless of how you access it. Unfortunately, BitLocker works too well in that regard. That's what it's designed to do, and it does it (surprisingly) well
for Windows 7 ?
To my understanding, only affected Windows 10 and 11
The funny thing here is that why public/home users started to ask for help to fix BSOD on their personal PC.

If you have the previously saved your recovery key, you can access your Microsoft account from your mobile device or a working computer and get it that way. Once you enter it, you'll be able to access safe mode and delete the file 👍
It wont ask you for recovery key if you never set one. The recovery key is from Bitlocker
Sorry, not true. I've worked on many machines that BitLocked the PC and the end user and BitLocker was never "enabled". I'd always assume the worst, especially since Microsoft says it only works on Pro Editions and I've had it pop up on Home Editions several times. Never trust Microsoft to give accurate information

CrowdStrike was named well, it definitely struck a crowd.
LOL I had that same thought!
It has been so long that I had to start a computer in safe mode I had totally forgotten F8.
@johndii2194 😂
I'm guessing this is just a Windows issue?
Correct. Linux and MacOS are not affected
Could this end up bankrupting Crowdstrike?
I'd argue it should.
Doubtful. It's a glitch, not a major FTC violation. Stock is down 10%, but it will rebound. Plus Microsoft and hundreds of other companies are locked I to contracts. They'll be fine.
@@AskYourComputerGuy Look for lawsuits galore! Perhaps with sufficient damages to result in financial collapse of Crowdstrike. I can only imagine class action lawsuits brought on by the end users (airline passengers, hotel customers, hospital patients, etm.) $1000 for each inconvenienced passenger perhaps?
And this has impacted hospital systems. After the deaths that occur that have Crowdstrike's negligence at their root cause, what will those damages end up being?
So, I don't think it's going to be a FTC thing, it's going to be a legal liability thing.
@kirkkohnen5050 you're probably more right than you know - I'm sure there is going to be legal battles galore!

Yeah, establishing blame and root cause is going to be REALLY easy. Lawyers salivate over cases like this.
@kirkkohnen5050 true! Thx for the laugh 👍😂
@1:20 "Or wait until Windows Update pushes down a fix for this."
If the computers will not boot up, then the Windows Update service will not be running, and networking services will not be running. So I do not believe that Microsoft cannot fix this.
Note that all of the businesses and government agencies that went down, and stayed down, is due to gross incompetence.
They should all have daily backups. They should all have emergency boot media, and restore to just prior to the crippling CrowdStrike update.
Sure, a day later, we have a manual fix.
But what if this was not a CrowdStrike triggered issue? What if it was a nation-state attack, or any other attack designed to cripple millions of computers?
Well, now we know that those huge businesses and government agencies do not have backups.
People that lost their shirt, due to big financial losses, should sue those businesses for gross negligence.
People that lost loved ones, due to emergency services having no clue how to recover, should be sued by the family of the dearly departed.
Will there be outages?
Yes.
But for huge companies and life saving government services to not have a recovery plan, that is outrageous.
By the way, I am predicting that the CrowdStrike issue was no accident. My money (so to speak) in on a disgruntled employee.
Or wouldn't it be ironic if CrowdStrike's computers were infiltrated with code to deliver a crippling update to the world?
That is a terrifying prospect...but also not out of the question. We don't know what happens when everything is "back to normal". Excellent points.

I don't disagree, but this was actually a Crowdstrike failure. Then again, it was the Microsoft platform that allowed it to fail. I'd say they're both to blame to a degree
@@AskYourComputerGuy Indeed, they both have their fair share of blame. When someone throws into my face the XZ backdoor in relation to Linux, I'll say Microsoft & Crowdstrike, and how they held key institutions and organisations worldwide paralysed, along a significant part of the population, including sick patients having treatments cancelled as a result.
@D.von.N and that's a totally fair point!
should have used Linux !!!!!!!!!
Agreed
Or MacOS
If a bad kernel module was sent out by IBM it'd cripple RedHat systems. Not really a good argument.
Unless the MS Office suite becomes available for Linux this is not an option for basically all organisations. Sorry, but the MS Office 'compatible' alternatives are simply not compatible enough to be used in all situations as required by most organisations. (Talking from personal experience in a large organisational setting).
MacOS is a better alternative because most MS Office programs are available for MacOS. Not totally compatible either (for example, custom written Excel Visual Basic routines) but much, much better than on Linux.
best fix. uninstall
Not possible if you're an Enterprise user and your PC is mandated to be Windows by your company. For personal computer, sure
This is why I'm glad I'm a linux user...
If you're a home user it wouldn't have affected you either way in the first place.
