    @Hitesh I'm with Arpit on this. Essentially, for deep security scan CrorwdStrike runs on very low level Kernal mode. All hardware drivers as well runs in this mode. Now Microsoft obviously can't control all external devides and all who are pushing all kind of drivers to support their devices. Now one can argu that why MS is implementing protection around this. The issue is pushing protection(think that as exception theoratically) will definately degrade full system performance as this will affect everthing your TCP/IP stack,Graphics driver etc. So like everything else in software there is a tradeoff here.

    Agree with @Hitesh.
    Apple (Mac OS) is a good example on how to avoid such issues. They have moved away from their kernel extensions to system + network extensions which doesn't allow direct kernel access to any third party software and only expose Apple tested APIs to do low level high privileged stuff.
    And kernel is one of the most critical component of the OS so it should be protected at all costs by the OS (manufacturer) itself.

  • @seanplynch
    @seanplynch 2 месяца назад +1

    It’s not a Microsoft or Crowdstrike problem. At the end of the day mission critical systems should not be reliant upon 3rd party software which has kernel level privileges in order to survive in the wild.
    My minimalist-built FreeBSD servers (for instance) are of virtually no risk.
    The only problem today is with people rubber stamping poor systems architecture

    You have a strong point about MS taking a slice of the blame; perhaps because it _IS_ MS after all?
    Meaning that despite its dominance in enterprise/network or enterprise-scale networks usage, MS is and has always been vulnerable unlike the more robust-or less prone to vulnerabilities-UNIX-based OS-es.
    After dominating the world's desktops, what MS needs to do is really, _really_ and seriously upscale / upgrade its very core such that enterprises that pay tons of money for its "operability" already have their sense of security built in from the get-go, instead of purchasing MS for its enterprise operations and, necessarily, acquire the services of a 3rd party security guard along with it.

    I think as a programmer myself, this can happen to any company it doesn't depend on how big it is. No company should be blamed. People are working very hard. Crowdstrike resolved the issue as earliest as possible. In our daily life, we get into many errors and we solve it. Nowadays the social network people who don't know how to boot the computer in safe mode(which should be known to every computer handling person) opens their social site and post it to show their intelligence which is a dumb move. And Microsoft can't handle all security issues. So Crowstrike as a cybersecurity company resolve those issues.

    I think you don't understand why it's not msft issue.
    CrowdStrike driver is a simple kernel mode driver that just like in other platforms (including linux, macos) runs in kernel mode. When a kernel mode driver crashes, it brings down the whole system, again, nothing that other platforms won't do here.
    On Windows, you do have an option to implement a driver as a user mode, and I think most drivers these days works like that but user mode drivers are very restricted. When a user mode driver crashes, they re simply restarted.

    I did not hear you explain how this update got installed in so many places in such a short time. Did it just happen automatically? You say that most users do not know how to uninstall this module. It follows that they did not install it. Does the IT department at a company decide to install it? Why then would so many decide to install it on Friday morning?

    • @vanamalaswathi5331
      @vanamalaswathi5331 2 месяца назад

      It’s a cumulative update that gets pushed automatically. It doesn’t ask any permission or need any approval, it just updates itself as long as it’s connected to internet. Many updates gets pushed like this in the background without us knowing, now that it’s a huge impact we’re knowing it.
      Also, no the IT department can’t do anything when it gets installed, it’s a direct update from Microsoft, and unfortunately the fix is to delete the file manually!

After rebooting, it got stuck and never went past there. I went to a technician yesterday, he said the hard drive is damaged. I had to replace the hard drive. Quite sad.
