I'm 36 and I loved Corey Heart. I had nearly all his albums on cassette as a teenager. His music was so different and cool. Sigh* oh how I miss the 80's.
I remember Corey Hart growing up in the mid 80s. I remember waiting and waiting for MTV world premiers for various new videos. It's amazing to see the amount of production that went into some of these 80s videos(boy in the box)...stage sets, actors, makeup, costumes. I think DuranDuran videos kicked off the "bigger will be better" idea. styles have changed but it's still an awesome production.
Corey got this title from John Records Landecker, from when John was a DJ in Canada. John called himself 'the boy in the box.' Corey hit #26 in Billboard, 11-2-85. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great weekend!
I'm 30 now, I remember when I was 4-5, my dad let me choose the record I wanted to play. It was always "boy in the box'' , ''Reckless from Brian Adams'' or ''brothers in arms'' from Dire Straits. The 80's music was always better or worst, nothing in between
A great song by Corey Hart! "Boy In The Box" was a featured track on the November 9th, 1985 edition of "American Top 40 - The '80s", & was the #27 song. Bravo, Corey Hart!
Dedicated to the lockdown,35 years ago I wasn’t the type of guy to go out and buy a Cory Hart cassette. My wife who I met in 85 turned me on to it. Every track rocks big time! 35 years later and the 3 of us are still rockin.
@BoomSukka I agree. I am 38 also. Corey Hart was my first concert. I saw him at Hill Auditorium in ann Arbor, MI when I was in 6th grade with my family. My folks were always cool about music.
I'm here because I was walking on my way to work a couple days ago and found a bunch of 45 sleeves on the ground and this single happened to be one of them. I know who Corey Hart is (I'm 40 lol) but never heard this song. I dig it so.....yay for litter?
That was some valuable “trash” you found there. Haha. Yeah this is definitely one of his best songs. You should also checkout his G/H and studio albums as well. Lots of hidden gems to be found there.
I'm responding to you because of your name. There was an Iowa Hawkeyes head coach in football that was named Bob Commings. He coached Iowa from 1974-78, and was the last head coach that Iowa had before Hayden Fry. 🏈🏈🏈
Corey got this title from John Records Landecker, when John was a DJ in Canada. Corey hit #26 in Billboard, 11-2-85. God bless you, Unidisc, for postin' it. Thanx!
Oh God, I had to hear this song again because some friends & I were talking about back in our teens while at camp UTADA (A summer camp for kids with Juvenile Diabetes in Utah, btw.) there was a Lip sync contest, and our cabin danced & sang to this song wearing nothing but cardboard boxes covering between out belly buttons & knees. Wish I knew what happened to that video tape of the cabins performing that night so I could see it again! Great song, Corey!
Listening to this epic tune reminds more of the Summer of '87, when I was about 15 or so, at "Camp UTADA", a summercamp for kids with Juvenile Diabetes, here in Utah. Every year, each cabin would put on a lipsynch show to a song they chose. That year, I had the idea for our cabin to strip down to almost nothing, and get some old cardboard boxes from the kitchen to cover out "Dingly bits", and we danced & sang to this song. Needless to say, we were a big hit with the girls! ;-D
Songfacts®: After his first album, First Offense, took off, the photogenic and often brooding Corey Hart was frequently compared to James Dean in the media. For his second album, he wrote "Boy in the Box" about Dean, and what it must have been like living in the public eye as if he were being observed in a box.
Corey's early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when "First Offense" came out in '83, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Hall & Oates, but I think Corey has a far more sly, earnest sense of humor. In '85, Corey released "Boy in the Box", his most accomplished album. I think his undisputed masterpiece is "Never Surrender". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the ethics of never quitting on yourself or your dreams no matter how challenging or daunting, it's also a personal statement about the man himself.
For Christmas I got myself some tickets for one his upcoming concerts, I'm so excited!! Floor seats too! I'm going to be reviewing all of his songs so I can sing along to any and all his songs, I'm probably going to be one of the only 16 year olds there haha...

I adore this video...could anything be more 80s? It's like the video's director had been binging on Blade Runner/Raiders of the Lost Ark/Union of the Snake/China Girl and rather than merely taking inspiration from them, instead thought "I'm gonna take EVERY SINGLE IDEA from those videos and cram them into my own!...."
Gracias Google!!!! desde 1986 buscando esta canción, no sabía ni el nombre ni mucho menos quien la cantaba, aunque sÍ se quién es CH. y Hoy la encontré.
One of the most underrated songs ever.
This. Sonics on this album are fantastic.
I'm 36 and I loved Corey Heart. I had nearly all his albums on cassette as a teenager. His music was so different and cool. Sigh* oh how I miss the 80's.
Me too! 😥
I had a good amount.
I just bought his album First Offense yesterday 👍 Was looking for Boy in the Box though...they didn't have it
The music of the 80s had a pizazz and a spark about it that a lot of modern music lacks
I always thought this was his best song. Better than Sunglasses at Night.
I think they’re tied for best song but because this didn’t get played near as much on the radio, it’s my favorite of the two.
I'd say the top song is comrade kiev
This was the tape I got with my first ever walkman, back in 1986. Oh, long ago days of youth...:)
Yessss...the folies of youth!!
I remember Sony Walkman then, before MP3 today, back when you not only touch music, you could damn well own it too.
Same here was a big Corey heart fan..
I miss walkmans they were great 😊
Wow you are old as I am.
I am 39 and the 80's music is still my fav
Everything is so original about this song, what is totally lacking in today's music!!!
Do you still think this?
I'm 48 . . . And love all things 80s.
:D
One of the greatest song's of 1985!! I very much cherished the Autumn of 1985

Your wife is smart! Corey Hart is absolutely amazing!
song is a dedication to DJ in Canada hence the boy in the box is a reference to this DJ in his radio studio
I used to have a crush on Corey. He was such a handsome young man. Great singer, too.
He was my first tape I ever owned. I remember when i was a kid, i always wanted my hair to be just like him. Good memories.

Great song. :)
He always had a very strong Harrison Ford vibe to him, back in the day. This video reminds me of Blade Runner. :)
