  • When you design a car audio system with more than one sub, you have a choice in how you connect them. In this video, Cris from our Tech Support department demonstrates the difference between parallel and series wiring, and why you might choose one over the other.
    Shop for car audio gear at Crutchfield: www.crutchfield.com/i-rYTVc2R...
    Cris walks you through two wiring scenarios: parallel and series. Parallel wiring halves the load presented to your amplifier - do it this way if you have two 4-ohm subs and a 2-ohm stable amplifier, for instance. Series wiring is additive; you might wire two 2-ohm subs in order to present a 4-ohm load to your amplifier.
    Those are just two examples, and the end result is you want to present the proper load to your amp to extract as much power and performance as you can.

    Just remember one thing: never wire speakers that utilize crossover networks in series. There is potential for degraded sound and even electrical damage. Subwoofers that do not have crossovers (some do) are fine, but not 2 way or three way speakers.

    I have seen this videos and it has been very helpful. Thank you for time and patience for making this for silly people like us out here. But, I have not come across the answer to one of my questions Im looking for. I have 2 Alpine W12S4 attached with Power acoustic RE4-2000D. Sound is very decent. The answer I am looking for is. The powers of all the components are within range of each-other, so, can I be able to attach both subs in series and bridge them to one channel? Currently, I am running them on separate channels. 1(bridge) x2(sub in series) is it possible?
    on the other 2 channels I have a pair of Jbl gx9638 attached. this setup sounds very nice.
    for the head unit I have sony dsx-a415bt.

      Hi Tony, sounds like you've got some great components. Looks like the amp is rated at 250 RMS at 2-ohms per channel. Since your Alpine subs are rated to 250 watts RMS each, sticking with two of your amp channels to power two of them will work best.

    Question: In the Series demonstration, you used the Sony amp to hook up the subs to one set of terminals. Would a second set of series wired subs hooked up to the second set of terminals in the Sony Amp be seen as parallel? Thus creating a 4 ohms out put for 4 subs?

      The only way this can work is with one sub wired to each amp channel. That will give them less power than we recommended, but will at least work. If you want to get the bass that the subs were built to produce, we recommend getting an amp like this MTX to power your two subs:

    I'm wiring 20, 4ohm svc subs to a 2ohm final impedence. Gonna try and figure out how to do this, and if I HAVE to I could buy a 1ohm rated amp if I have to wire it to 1ohm.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  Год назад

      That won't be possible without wiring some of the subwoofers out of phase with the rest. If you can make room for 4 more subwoofers, then you can keep them all in phase and create a 1.5 ohm load for an amp.

    I’m new to this, lmao

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  Год назад

      The need for an amp on the speakers depends on your goals and partly on the speakers that will be used in the system. There are times when the only external amp installed is one to power subwoofers. In times like this, the radio powers the speakers with its built-in amp.
      But then there are times when external amps are used to power all the speakers.
      We can tell you that installing an external amp to power the speakers should make them play better than using a radio's built-in amp to power them. Just don't exceed the speakers RMS watts with the amp. We wouldn't want to get so much power that the sound is still bad because of it.
      What speakers are you installing?
      What vehicle is this in?
      What speakers are installed now? What changes are you hoping to make to the sound you get with those speakers?

    So on the parallel setup. Having 2 4ohm subs, I’ll only need an amp that puts out “1 at 2ohms” correct? Now is it the same with the RMS output? If these 2 4ohm subs are rated for 400 watt rms does my amp need to put out at least 400 watt rms or at least 800 watt rms?

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  2 месяца назад

      If you are using a mono amp with two single 4-ohm voice coil subs wired in parallel to 2-ohms and rated up to 400 watts RMS each, a mono amp rated at 800 watts RMS x 1 at 2-ohms would be an ideal power match to maximize the performance of the subs.

    Hooking up two 300 watt JL 12s on a 500 watt max amp in series will work great. 8ohms is good because it will not over tax the amp and still have more than enough bass to enjoy music at a resonable level, so I don't go deaf.

I have 2 halo alpine ten subs I noticed when I took one apart that they have 4 connectors and two of the are jumped i think but anyways on the outside terminals on the box it says 2oms. Each subwoofer is internally wired to present a 2 ohm load at the box terminal. Wiring two of the boxes together in parallel like you described will present a 1 ohm load to the amp. You nailed it!!!

    Hi, I like how informative your video is but i have a question in regards to ohms. Is there a way to wire a single sub woofer to a mono block and force it into outputting 2 ohms?? I ask this because i have a single 12" Competition Kicker sub that can handle 400RMS. My mono block at 4 ohms only outputs 200RMS, but at 2 ohms it delivers between 400RMS to 500RMS depending on the voltage from the battery. I would like to get that 2 ohm power from the amp to my single 12" Kicker as at 4ohms it really isnt outputting much power to keep up with the rest of the system. Is there anyway to trick the amp into outputting 2ohms or is my only option to buy another Sub and wire it as shown in this video so i get 2 ohms from the amp. BTW my amp is capable of running at 2ohms.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  Год назад

      We do not have devices that can be wired with a subwoofer to change the ohms the amp will see. You mentioned having a Kicker Competition subwoofer that can handle 400 watts RMS. That sounds like their CompR models which are typically a dual voice coil subwoofer. What is the Kicker model number of your 12" Competition subwoofer?

    • @BoomBox02
      @BoomBox02 Год назад

      @@crutchfield Hi, Thanks for your reply. I am not sure of the model number as it was boxed since i purchased it. Its a Kicker enclosure and from memory (i dont remember what i did a day ago these days) i am pretty sure it says CompR (or something along those lines) on the Sub or enclosure. It is not a current model. I purchased it over 10 years ago. When i get some spare time, i'll have to take the sub out of the enclosure to see if it actually is a competition sub with Dual voice coil and to see the model number as i have been curious about it ever since i bought it.

    Thank you so much for the video. Using the parallel technic, can I do the same with my wireless subwoofer (from soundbar)? My sub driver that came along with the soundbar( samsung q950a) is only 8 inch 4omhs. The wireless sub has no output and neither samsung sells same model subwoofer. All I wanna do is hook up wire directly from the sub driver using your parallel technics and then sends the audio signal to a small sub amplifier that can handle my new polk subwoofer 12 inch 200 watt. Will this change the overall impedance or impact inadvertently in the process?
    My intended simple steps below:
    1. Hook up wire from wireless subdriver inside the sub cabinet(parallel)
    2. send the audio connection (wire) to a sub amp.
    3. then send the connection to new subwoofer.
    Eternally grateful if you reply.

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  8 месяцев назад

      Speaker level inputs on devices have such a high ohm rating that they, for all practical purposes, they do not change the ohms that the source amp sees. The process you described can work as long as we know the other gear works. You mentioned the wireless subwoofer does not play. If it was the amp in the wireless subwoofer does not work, then the newly added amp/sub gear to not produce any audio. And that is on top of the fact that once you open that cabinet of a wireless subwoofer, most manufacturer warranties are voided. It is best to use parallel wiring on devices meant to connect gear that could be wired in parallel (i.e. some power amps, etc..).

      Carefully considering your subwoofer impedance and wattage configuration is crucial to selecting the right amp. Connecting two 4-ohm subs capable of handling 300-watts RMS each would show a 2-ohm load to your amp, with a maximum wattage of 600-watts of potential power the subwoofers can handle. With your amp you would be delivering 150-watts per subwoofer and should sound great with most subwoofers without the possibility of overpowering.

      Wiring two subwoofers in parallel by joining all the negative connections together to the negative on the amp and doing the same for the positive connections will make an amp see a 4 ohm load. As for the watts, they will be split evenly through both subwoofers. However, wiring the subwoofers together at the terminals of one of the subs, that will make this set of terminals get all the watts of the amp. Then half will leave using the wire that runs to the 2nd subwoofer. That's what we were referring to when we mentioned the first subwoofers connections and that it would be safer on them if each subwoofer had wires running from it to the amp.

      It is only possible to wire together eight 8 ohm drivers together and get a 1 ohm load. If you tried to wire in the other two, you will end up with something less than 1 ohm but your amp is not rated for anything less than 1 ohm. Another issue you will face is that eight of the subwoofers are not able to handle the power output from the amp. Ideally, you will find an amp that output 6000 watts RMS at 1 ohm when trying to run 8 of the subs on one amp. The other option would be to try to find an amp that is 0.5 ohm stable and outputs around 7500 watts RMS at 0.5 ohms.

    You showed how to make two 4 ohm speakers into 2 ohms. And two 4 ohm speakers into 8 ohms. I didn't see an explanation for 4 ohm installation

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  Год назад

      That's because it is not possible to wire two 4 ohm subs (or speakers) together and get a 4 ohm load for an amp. Different subwoofers would be needed so they can be joined together to a 4 ohm load. Two 2 ohm subwoofers can be joined together to create a 4 ohm load using the same method shown when creating 8 ohms from two 4 ohms.

      Great subs! You could wire them to a 2-ohm total load as shown with this wiring diagram: images.crutchfieldonline.com/ca/learningcenter/car/subwoofer_wiring/2DVC_2-ohm_mono.jpg
      And this JL Audio mono amp is a perfect power match for them: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc928/p_13698643/JL-Audio-RD1500-1.html?tp=35834

      Yes, you can add an appropriately fitted connector on the end.

    stupid novice rookie question.. so turning 2 4 ohm subs into a 2-ohm load actually gets the most maximum power from the amplifier? how does that make sense... the lesser the ohms the better?

    • @crutchfield
      @crutchfield  9 месяцев назад

      Amps typically output more watts when they are presented with lower ohms. Ohms is resistance. With less resistance, more work can be done (think how many more 45# plates a person could lift if gravity was reduced). For amps, their work is creating watts. But one thing to keep in mind is that you do not exceed the lowest ohm that an amp can support.
      We have an article on our web site that is designed more like a walkthrough to help match subs to an amp now that you have seen various ways to wire them together:
      www.crutchfield.com/I-rFBKc227/learn/how-to-match-subwoofers-and-amplifiers.html

    • @RKCorinth
      @RKCorinth 8 месяцев назад

      Think ohms as resistance.
      Let’s say somebody was playing tug of war, 4 people on each side (4ohms). In this case, there is equal resistance. No one side can pull harder than the other etc. But let’s say two guys are removed from one size, well now there is less resistance for the side with 4 guys, meaning that they can now pull harder and use more power compared to the side that now only has two guys.
      The less guys = less resistance, which means more pulling power.

  • @jessicaembers924
    @jessicaembers924 3 месяца назад

    Maybe try series parallel wiring? Double your output with 4 speakers, triple your output with 9 speakers, 16, 25, 36 speakers etc etc. Same ohms to your amp as One of the speakers.

    So tell us in more detail...
    I.M.H.O. if I'm right or wrong...
    1) Class G...2/3 step voltage level , appropriately selected to drive either class A , AB , D..
    2) Class H ...continuously variable dc volts..
    selected by music level to drive....same as above...both are not " classes " of amps by themselves..but vastly improve the power eff.
    specially in professional audio.....
    3) what's was / is class " T " of Tripath audio fame... a frequency modulated audio fed to pwm comparator in MHz range??
    4) why no / few mentions of
    class " I " (interleaved pwm a.k.a. balanced current amp.). ??? is it still CROWN AUDIO 's proprietary goldmine..??? Let's hear something...
