It's kinda wild how impactful MDFC's are as Modern combo enablers- If it weren't for Modern Horizons sets, Zendikar Rising might be the most impactful set of the last few years.
Thanks for making videos like these! It's really helpful for people like me that get confused in some modern videos when I don't understand why you lost
Seth I have to say seeing this huge variety of videos, including timeless, best of its kind teaching like this, magic cheaters, best creature each year, as well as all the deckbuilding innovation in the playing magic section, it makes me so happy to see. So glad for the whole mtggoldfish people, you all share so much "you-ness" that I can't help but be inspired to live well and stick by my good pals.🏆🥭
In some of these, it’s kind of hard to differentiate between “this is just how the card works” and “this is a combo.” Like, if cascading into Living End is a combo, what about cascading into Rhinos?
Combo decks are built around few payoffs and many ways to get to those payoffs. Living end is a combo because the rest of the deck is full of evokes and cyclers to make sure the LE resolves, and in contrast, cascading into rhinos is a high value play in a tempo deck. Combos value both card quality over redundancy (so burn and dredge are not combos) and value ways to get to those combos (so UW control with mystic sanctuary+cryptic command is not a combo deck)
Yeah, what counts as a combo is a tricky question. Initially I had a part in the intro talking about the definition, but ended up cutting it because it was sort of long. I landed on: a synergy involving more than one card that either immediately wins the game or puts the player so for ahead they virtually win the game and should literally win within a couple of turns. It's murky for sure, but by this definition Living End would be a combo because it builds a board so bit it usually wins in a turn or two, but Rhinos isn't because two 4/4's doesn't necessarily win the game.
Additionally in Heliod combo, if you have a Conclave Mentor on the battlefield with the spike feeder combo, it can grow your creatures infinitely big since you'll net an additional +1/+1 every time you do the loop
I loved Ad Nauseam but the banning of Simian Spirit Guide really took the legs out from under the deck. Without that free mana, its too slow now. Still, it was nice to see it again in this list, like looking at an old friend!
Yeah, Ad Naus isn't nearly as heavily played as it used to be. At one point it was a tier one deck, but losing the extra mana from Simian Spirit Guide really slowed it down by making it so you can't combo off while tapped out. It still shows up on occasion, but it's tier three at best now.
Tron and infect seem to fall under Synergy in the Synergy/Combo spectrum, though there can be combo kills within the decks like Mindslaver lock. You could also talk about former combos that were banned like Blazing Infect, KCI, Twin, Punishing Fire, and Eggs.
The Yogmawth combo segment reminded me of the existence of MoggWarts so i skipped forward to the Goblins Combo part to be bitterly disappointed that Conspicuous Snoop was the combo that you talked about
Same, also I think Thoracle might be the worst win con. Personally gut shot is my favorite since it takes so few slots and can hit monkey. Thrasta is also great though.
You forgot about the secondary combo in belcher using pyromancer’s ascension and a loop of bala ged, noxious revival, manamorphose, and desperate ritual to make infinite mana, draw infinite cards, use skyclave to make infinite angels using the infinite mana and recursion and then finally giving them all haste through song mad treatury
Neobrand player here. Gut shot win con is the best right now. Even more convoluted than oracle. (There are many other ways to win, and can also kill turn 1)
Glad to see the majority of my decks represented here. Making a gauntlet of various formats (5 modern, 3 pauper, 2 pioneer, 2 legacy) Yawgmoth, amulet titan, grixis shadow breach, esper scam, and Neobrand :) infect and ad nauseam make up my legacy decks, zubera Storm and oops all spells in pauper :) Neoform and lotus field in pioneer. Only non combo decks are Rakdos burn in pauper and maybe esper scam/ death's shadow (when siding out combo tings) yay combo🎉🎉🎉
NeoBrando Combo is so fun to pull off though I haven't played the Thassa's Oracle version. I've played the OG with LabMan/Lightning Storm. Then after Simian got banned I played the Thrasta version.
Colossus hammer "loses flying" clause is relevant in hammer time if you have a true paladin and no sigarda's aid. Unless you are have an inkmoth, which can equip the hammer, lose flying then get it back by transforming again.
The definition of a combo is tough. In some ways I think most Modern decks (outside of control at least) could be considered combo decks if you think about it long enough.
Grishoalbrand is such a weird deck but I do have to admit that I find versions that play Thrasta and Fortifying Draught to be amusing. Something about a hasty, trampling, death dino makes me laugh.
It's the best feeling ever every time I get the deck to go off. Nothing beats smashing an opponent's face with a giant dino before they get to play a single land.
It's kind of wild that Oops all spells decks existed long before MDFC lands, thoracle, Creeping chill. Sad that most of these combos don't show up anymore.
The only combo here I feel a bit iffy about is Hardened Scales, to me it was more of an aggro synergy deck and brings us back to the combo vs synergy debate. Also would've been great if you could include historical combo decks like KCI, maybe do that for another video!
I feel like Thoracle got a lot of spots when they're all the same combo, but they just start differently. Cast thoracle, empty livrary, resolve thoracle ability
Yeah UW or just Blue taking turns was a super sweet deck a while ago. I saw a match of it versus GW hate bears and Gaddok Teeg really shuts down turns haha. I loved the turns deck though.
Maybe, one of the things I realized working on the video is that there are some combo decks that don't really have clear combos. Dredge plays like a combo deck for sure, but what would the actual combo be? I'm not sure.
So walking ballista, Thassa's oracle, grinding station and maybe valakut should be banned. That's the most mana cheap and uninteractives combo enablers. Especially the two first. Infinite mana should be a little more work to win you the game than casting a walking ballista. And Thassa oracle... Mill yourselves is so lame ! Winning should be killing you opponent or milling him. Milling yourself should loose you the game. That's why there is so many ways to do it. you should not win by doing that
It's kinda wild how impactful MDFC's are as Modern combo enablers- If it weren't for Modern Horizons sets, Zendikar Rising might be the most impactful set of the last few years.
Yeah, the MDFCs have done a lot for some unique combos. They are super good!
You forgot the most powerful combo!!! 6 forests and a Colossal Dreadmaw!
This one is forbidden
Honestly, it should be banned. a 6/6 with built-in evasion is too strong for turn 6
Almost as classic as a forest and a charging badger
You forgot Vivien combo
You forgot Vivien combo
Thanks for making videos like these! It's really helpful for people like me that get confused in some modern videos when I don't understand why you lost
Yeah, I've gotten quite a few comments saying similar things which is part of why I wanted to make the video.

Presumably the difference lies in the scale of results.
Combo decks are built around few payoffs and many ways to get to those payoffs. @@MTGGoldfish It's a strange, strange Modern we play where cascading into Crashing Footfalls is a "midrange" deck. 😹
Additionally in Heliod combo, if you have a Conclave Mentor on the battlefield with the spike feeder combo, it can grow your creatures infinitely big since you'll net an additional +1/+1 every time you do the loop
how does an infinitely big creature matter in that situation
Good point! Conclave Mentor can help power up the combo for sure.
@@wldnrkls if your opponent has an alternate win condition you will still lose

ok, off to build a deck with every single one of these combos in it. should be really reliable
Ha, that could actually be pretty funny.
Unfortunately, Amulet Titan requires lands and Belcher only works if you don’t have lands.
@mangoalias608 You might as well make it a battle of wits deck while you're at it.
This video is super epic! Thanks for these series. Love it!!!
Thanks!
I love this kind of materials!
Thanks!
Tell me Yargle & Multani will make an appearance in Part 2 of this series, lol.
*Thanks for the Content!*
I honestly thought this was going to be a youtube short and a troll video before I clicked it
Ha, no, it's a serious one.
The Yogmawth combo segment reminded me of the existence of MoggWarts so i skipped forward to the Goblins Combo part to be bitterly disappointed that Conspicuous Snoop was the combo that you talked about
I can think of 3 other ways to win with Neobrand. Very cool combo
Same, also I think Thoracle might be the worst win con. Personally gut shot is my favorite since it takes so few slots and can hit monkey. Thrasta is also great though.

That was a lot of help thx
Super cool and informative video!
my favorite combo will always be my opponents misplays into shame scoops. one of the most fundamental combos of all trading card games
NeoBrando Combo is so fun to pull off though I haven't played the Thassa's Oracle version. I've played the OG with LabMan/Lightning Storm.

I like how you didnt mention that you created the Hammertime Deck and how impactful it was
Seth, your pronunciation of “Conspicuous” cracks me up 😂
Most words with three to five syllables, to be honest
Vizier Druid Combo is my love
For the first combo to work you need creatures with "persist" not undying. creatures like kitchen finks
Acerak + Intruder Alarm + Mana Dorks = Infinite trips through the dungeon.
Hmm, maybe I should have added an Acerarak combo to the list, but I've seen it more often in Pioneer than Modern.
Great video. Sad u missed restore balance combo
As ForeTold or Electrodominance , Crashing Footfalls , Goryo's vengence, Solitary Confinement lock, bogles, tron.
The definition of a combo is tough. In some ways I think most Modern decks (outside of control at least) could be considered combo decks if you think about it long enough.
@@MTGGoldfish true
The mindslaver combo from mono blue Tron is missing.
Good informative video! ❤❤❤
Standard combo: cast Invoke Despair, which will draw another Invoke Despair 100% of the time, then cast it again
Planebound Accomplice + Vivien on the Hunt
Grishoalbrand is such a weird deck but I do have to admit that I find versions that play Thrasta and Fortifying Draught to be amusing. Something about a hasty, trampling, death dino makes me laugh.

I’m surprised song of creation combo didn’t make the cut. Along with invention turns
I like how the language and standards of magic has evolved to consider equiping a creature or pumping a creature for lethal as a "combo"
I think the combo part of hammer time comes from cheating the equip cost to zero, allowing you to pump anything to 10/10 or higher for free
I'm glad your voice is better! :)
Missed Ragavan plus Basic Mountain
You forgot 8Key
It's a weird artifact deck that puts charge counters on everything to take infinite turns with Magistrate's Scepter
Is it bad that I really wanted this to be in a “Yako every country in the world” song? Can we get a remix Seth?
The only combo here I feel a bit iffy about is Hardened Scales, to me it was more of an aggro synergy deck and brings us back to the combo vs synergy debate. Also would've been great if you could include historical combo decks like KCI, maybe do that for another video!
Yeah, that one is a bit of a stretch. It might be a case where it plays like a combo deck a lot of the time but doesn't actually have a "combo".
New drinking game-take a shot every time SaffronOlive says ‘on the spot’
Alternative: ‘draw your entire/whole deck’
Surprised that the Raven’s Crime/Spellweaver Helix/Dark Petition combo wasn’t included
Scurry Oak + Heliod + Ajani's Welcome.
Now,you can do video on “how to counter,or the best cards to counter these combo”.
Enjoy the idea
Yeah, that could be a good follow up. I like it.
@@MTGGoldfish love your work btw
surprised not to see asmo/time sieve combo here
🎶Don’t be conspishus. Don’t be conspishus.🎶
Amulet of Vigor
Simic Growth Chamber
Deeproot Pilgrimage
Infinite Merfolk token combo
PLEASE???
My favorite combo is murktide regent c:
Voldaren thrillseeker + Yargle and Multani
if hardened scales is a combo, so is elves
Sad that kitchen finks combo is not featured
You talking the old birthing pod combo of melira, kitchen finks or Murderous recap, and viscera seer? Good times
No Calibrated Blast combo?
If infect is a combo deck then every deck is a combo deck. Who could forget the most busted combo of all time: basic Island?
Me after the video ends: "Through the breach is dead..." **Sadge Naruto Music**
Oh, no....my worst fear.
No week 1 _Budget Magic_ episode.
Is MOM as bad as I suspect it is...?
If u need 4 or 5 pieces for a combo, can u really classify it as a combo?
If it goes infinite and kills on the spot, I think so
Splinter twin combo?
you forgot mindslaver+academy ruin+tron lands combo
I'm kind of sad that the mdfcs meam that oops all spells plays lands now.
I'm not seeing the Mindslaver lock for Mono-U Tron here...
Ohh, I should have added that one. Good call.
I feel like Thoracle got a lot of spots when they're all the same combo, but they just start differently. Cast thoracle, empty livrary, resolve thoracle ability
You forgot Vivien combo
Fact is, there will never be “all” of the combos. It is infinite for this game
No elves? :c
Conspishus snoop 💀
Isn't there a miracle deck that takes a ton of turns to win the game?
Yeah UW or just Blue taking turns was a super sweet deck a while ago. I saw a match of it versus GW hate bears and Gaddok Teeg really shuts down turns haha. I loved the turns deck though.
There are taking turns decks, although I haven't seen one in a long time, they have sort of faded away since the last Modern Horizons set.
Awesome video. But all I kept hearing was Thassa’s Oracle should be banned
No Lantern, Eggs or Cheerios? 😢
Wasn't Eggs banned a while ago?
Rip simian spirit guide
isn't dredge some kind of combo too?
Maybe, one of the things I realized working on the video is that there are some combo decks that don't really have clear combos. Dredge plays like a combo deck for sure, but what would the actual combo be? I'm not sure.
@@MTGGoldfish From the hip, I would propose that the combo is Cathartic Reunion, Narcomebia, and dredge cards.
Now do KCI
Kinda sad that half of the combos are thassa's oracle mills.
Yeah, a lot of combos add with Thassa's Oracle :(
Now that modern has devolved into a less powerful version of standard sure lets look at some combos
Restore balance!
Yea, you missed all the legacy combos 😂😂😅
