five string banjo
@potters27 One can not "steal" what has been FREELY given away.
Pay it forward and all the best in your musical persuits!
Banjoistically yours,
Jon Eric
Great complexity! Perhaps.... too many notes? Definitely showcases your skill level and dexterity, scaling & inversion, but... just too many notes - I lost the melody several times - but in your defense you did say that you were just fooling around... Jon Eric has Talent for sure.
+Rivers Edge - LOL yup way too many ;)
At the risk of sounding like a jerk, so friggin what? I always hear bluegrassers complain about not hearing the melody, do you realize you are the only genre that cares that much about it? Jazz taught us that we can take songs and improv our own melodies to them. The old time way of playing the melody 100 times in a song is boring, let the artist create!
I would say you pretty much own the fretboard and have a beefy right hand engine to take it pretty much anywhere you want. Amazing stuff.
@kswilson89
I switch up depending on what scale I am playing
OR string that is picked.
Wow, I clicked on this from the response from Super Mario Banjo and figured it would be ultra lame. Pleasantly surprised that it's a great, great video!
I've been playing banjo for just over a year now and it's ultra addicting... I've got videos posted, not as good as yours, but I'm extremely good for how long I've been playing.
My friend that was great! To be successful you have to do things original and unique and you have all the tools to do it! I'm just curious, who were your inspiartions and who's style did you try to learn first? Or, are you self taught? I bet I should of asked that first!
Wooww.....man, you gotta be kidding...you told me I have a nice picking... ..but honestly I might be okay...but you are impressive!!! really great picking....I'm faaaarr to be as good as you!! congrats!!! I wish I could play as good as you!! keep on rocking!!
You make that look so easy! Always enjoy listening to you.
I bought an Alvarez 5 string several years back and worked at it for a while but now all I can do is listen to others and enjoy it! Just can't get my fingers to wrap around the neck!

Brilliant, Jon.
I've just bought my first banjo at the age of 66 and would love to learn Salt Creek. Can you play it, slowed down 100 times for me?😃
I've been playing the banjo for about a year now and every time I think I kick ass I watch this video to remind myself just how far I have to go.......also......I didn't know people in Iowa could rock

I love the basic song and then the licks and runs you do, but you always jump back into the song. I can't stand it when people stray off and stay off, but you, you are perfect! Great job!
Nice! Great Single String work and some interesting bluesy melodic licks in there too! You sound great man! I was already getting bored with my Salt Creek, and now it really seems plain!!!
We have an expression here in the UK..: S~@#T the bed, that boy can play...
Thank you for your inspirational influence Jon, much appreciated.
I like how you go melody, then get away, then melody, then get away. Very creative. Fast and your timing is spot on. strong work. solid as a rock.
Hi Jon, great playing! When you do those scale runs do you just use your thumb and index finger to pick alternately?
Brilliant. Skill and speed at the service of uncompromised musicality.

Your smile at the end is deserved

How does this banjo compare to the Eagle II
+alphasxsignal Both would be a dream to play (but I can only play one at a time)
@Sagrads
I know that most people play this in the key of "A Major"-
Played it in G Major with regular banjo tuning which is:
5-g 4-D 3-G 2-B 1-d
Bam!
@Dylan Isham
VERY kind of you. Terrapin is such a beautiful place!
I love it there : )
you rock dude !
Jon, Great work! There are a few pickers that have been instrumental in my learning the banjo; 1) being my uncle, 2) Mr Scruggs and 3) you. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
This was amazing..I don't know what to say!
I have this tune in my banjo learning book and I doubt I'll reach that level of playing anytime soon :P
Bravo!
Heck yeah, Jon, you have a lot of confidence! You go right into the song. I admire that and hope to get there one day. And I love the banjoistically yours!! Allison
This is so good! Whoaaaa man my favourite tune!
Fantabulistic!!!
youre pretty amazing. i am a guitarist of almost 8 years now, and i want to officially learn banjo cause of this vid
Not bad, great right hand. Not a fan of this arrangement, however, am really a melody oriented picker..when it's lost, it's hard to recover.
Not sure if the 'sexy banjo player' aspect is gonna ever happen, but you are very adept, no doubt. ;)
Fellow picker- Ted
Like I said in another comment above, why are bluegrassers so obsessed with the melody? I really thought that way of thinking would have died out in the 80s with the advent of new grass and new acoustic. Listening to one melody played over and over is boring, esp. if you know the artist is capable of more. I'd much rather hear what the player can create when he isn't tied down to one thing.
Dear Jon, I watched this video, and my head exploded. And I loved it. Thank you.
Those licks are so innovative! You've got serious skill... I can't get enough of this
Awesome Jon, just like ALL your banjo playing. You are quite an inspiration!
Oh my gosh!!! That is super. Awesome playing and love the sound of that banjo...
Thanks a bunch Len! : )
Jon Eric you are a wizard! Seriously though, amazing playing!
Thank you Brad : )
How long have you been playing Eric?
Amazing
Wow!
WOW!
