Thanks for this, Jim. Another great video! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your tutorials. I've tried other methods but I always come back to your videos. I find they are more engaging and I just remember the songs and playing tips better. Please keep them coming - I always look forward to your vids!
I REALLY like the way this song sounds and it's not too hard so far. Thanks! I needed a break from Cumberland and the "devil's pinky triangle" thing! :)
Best tutorial yet. Thanks for the time and effort you put into these. I genuinely look forward to your videos and learning something new. All the best from England Jim.
Jim, Love them potatoes!! At 60 years old I've decided time to learn an instrument , I love the banjo so it just seemed natural to take it up. Researched entry level banjos because I didn't want to spend a ton of money just in case I didn't stick it out (was told ALOT banjo hard instrument to learn especially at 60). Decided upon a Recording King RK-35. Gotta say it's a great banjo regardless of proficiency level. Recently, I found your tutorial videos on RUclips & must tell you they are freaking AWESOME!! You make learning fun & love your delivery & presentation!! Would love to see a video of fun Kick-Offs & Endings. Keep up the fantastic videos & fun!!!
I love potatoes! Thanks Jim another great videos and I have hung all my Banjos on the wall, and they look great, sound great too when my dog barks I have an indoor wind chime fantastic please keep em coming
Nice video Jim. I love your teaching style, great format and easy to understand. Also I totally agree with you on not keeping your banjo locked up in a case against its will. I have 3 banjos, two hanging on the wall and I play them both daily. I have my "GOOD" banjo in a case and I think it is feeling neglected.
Nice one Jim love it 👏 sounds great another tip on the hangers is to put another hanger or decent block of wood under the base of the body (1) it takes the weight off the top hanger and(2) it keeps the weight pressure from possible stretching the neck from the base of the head stock ..as sometimes not always the head stocks are grafted and glued on as a separate piece of wood. 👷 🤔👍 🏴🇬🇧
home renovating at the moment. ... Seen them but never knew what they were called. so much better than the clunky floor racks I invested in years ago. Agreed I like my instruments at hand where i can get at them, when ever the urge hits..which is quite often. Unfortunately, I tend to leave them all over the house, which really annoys my wife...swing strings to the rescue :) thanks for the tip and lesson Jim, it is a good tune.
My friend, your lessons are awesome! I have learned a lot from you. Thank you so much for sharing. I may have asked before, but I would love to learn how to play a tune called Siempre by Sonny Osborne. I have his instructional DVD but that one is not on it. I can't find anyone who teaches that one. Do you think that sometime you might find some time to post a lesson on that one? I completely understand if you can't fit that one in. I love your videos. They inspire me to keep picking and learning. Thanks again!
Thank you for making these videos where you very slowly teach us how to play the blue-grass banjo. I just go myself my first five-string banjo and I did really enjoy learning this tune in particular. I've spent a lot of hours working on this tune and my neighbors are probably tired of me and my picking now I guess. A quick question. Have you done a video on Oh Susannah? I couldn't find it here, but it might have slipped my eye.
Hey Jim, love your videos! I'm going to be performing in a concert in October and one of the pieces we were gonna play is Limerock. it would be great if you could make a tutorial video! Thanks, -Joe Jackson
That’s a cool tune, but I’m not sure I could do it justice in an instructional video. So many of the techniques in that tune are fairly advanced - from melodic style to single string and some other stuff could certainly confuse folks that aren’t quite ready for it. My other thought is this: by the time a picker is ready to tackle LimeRock they shouldn’t need a step by step video for it.
You never disappoint thank you so much for you videos. You do a great job teaching. Just wandering could you do a video on the song Dooley by the Dillards.
Such great stuff, Jim. Thanks. I notice on that 3-peat 3341 part you use the thumb and then the index for the two 3s. I assume this is for strategic reasons :-)
Jim could you do a tutorial on how to do the banjo part from 'Callin Baton Rouge' by New Grass Revival?? Thanks! I love your lessons, you taught me how to play banjo!

7 year long banjo owner and two week old banjo player here. I love it! I've been through your tutorial multiple times and love adding in new songs every few days! During that roll with the F-chord shape, I find it fun to combine the first two notes with a pull off! Just curious, is there a reason why you put your index finger down in that formation when you don't play the second string?
Yup... what if I goof and hit that string? If I’m holding it, then it’ll sound ok. Plus, you can also hear that string ringing even if you don’t strike it.
When I slide on the 4th string I get the heebee geebeez. Does anyone else have this problem and how do you get over it? I've tried pressing harder, it makes sliding difficult. I try pressing lighter, it doesn't sound right. Of course I'll keep practicing. Any other tips??
Jim, so between the 6th measure and 7th measure, hitting that 1st fret 4th string in measure 6 and then going to the 7th measure with the 3rd and 2nd string thing is a bugger with left hand placement. You make it look so effortless.
@@JimPankey Take a look at the tab you provided. In measure 6 you do the 2 to 4 slide on the 3rd string, followed by an open 2nd string immediately when you end the slide, then you do an open 1 then 5 string, followed by a quarter note on the 2nd string 1st fret, then 8th notes on 5 and then 1. It's the 2nd string 1st fret in measure six that you have noted... is that a typo maybe? I'm trying to find that measure in the video now. Edit: I think it might be right at the 05:22 mark in the video... it's hard to see if you have your finger down on the first fret for the 2nd string but that's where it would be.
I saw your country blues video from a long time ago in which you sing. You have a good voice it reminds me of Chris Stapleton. Also would you be interested in doing a video on some blues licks?
Thanks for the kind words. I'll be sure to put "sounds like Chris Stapleton" in my resume. He's great! I've not thought of doing a blues lick video. I'll certainly give it some thought.
I just cannot get that correct tempo for the begining potatoes part I'm picking the correct strings but I am not getting that same sound. I am trying to get it going slow and fast but there seems to be a little niche in the way you do it
If you’re trying to find a shortcut instead of using the videos, then you’re really approaching playing from a bad direction. Learn the tunes I’ve shared in the beginner series... once you understand those where you can utilize pieces of those in different songs. Learning the language is more important than learning to play back some memorized notes. But if you just want the tabs, well, they’re out there....
Hey Jim I’m chase I’m 13 and I can already play guitar really good and I’m learning on the banjo so maybe if you live near me we can pic and grin a little
