I loved tomb raider growing up, I loved barbie growing up. this game was a fun mix of both of them. Even tho i got stuck in the jungle levels. Barbie talks in the menu in all the games ive played, and even reads things out. As a kid i started playing before i could read so this was a blessing and so Barbie. The controls were whack but good times were had.
Tomb Raider released the year I was born. I was a toddler when I first played/watched someone play it; so I was pretty scared, of the enemiesand sounds, but I also loved it so much. My mom bought me this game, so I could go on adventures, but not be afraid. I really did enjoy it but not as much as Tomb Raider. It really convinced me to face my fears, so I could play the one i found more fun. Anyway, Barbie Explorer has a special place in my heart for being an option when I was too afraid to adventure with my favorite archeologist. 😊 (I remember I had to turn off the music in TR1 just to be able to get back into playing it. I don't know why the ambient music got to me. 😂 Now Tomb Raider has one of my favorite OSTs.)
Found this game at a flea market and got it instantly. As a huge TR fan and somebody with a newfound appreciation for random licensed games this was a perfect find! Of course it's a bit disappointing to see they didn't really try to replicate the TR genre, unlike say Indiana Jones or Duke Nukem, but still. Oh and btw, if you got the Remastered Trilogy... Lara can now spin dash too!
I swear you unlocked a memory in my mind long forgotten. I loved playing this game. And it wasn't a bad game i would totally play it again. The nostalgia 😊
A lot of the smoother climbing mechanics like diagonal climbing and faster pushing actually got realized earlier than the reboot games...in the LAU trilogy
I always remembered playing this game from the age of 3/4 but I couldn't remember the name, thank you for unlocking childhood memories 😂 I got into tomb raider a few years later
One of my favorite licensed games on PS1 was Nascar Racers. Which was essentially "What if Need for Speed had stock cars and also had power-ups like Mario Kart". It's one of those extremely obscure gems for the system.
I woshipped Lara as a little girl. She was EVERYTHING I aspired to be. I still have tons of drawings from early 2000's where I drew Lara Croft 🤣 I would braid my Barbie doll's hair and give them Lara Croft-y clothes and imagine I'm jumping around in forests. Aaand truth be Told.... I also loved this game as a kid 🤣 Because of the fact that it was like Tomb Raider, haha. This game was exactly how I imagined what was happening to my Barbie doll. So yeah, it may be bad but I love it out of nostalgia, haha.
You should make a video about the American Girl games for the DS, particularly Kit Mystery Challenge. Arglefumph did a walkthrough of it but there's barely even a review of it.
Babylon might have been inspired by Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (in which it's the most "important" location), considering it's a very Tomb Raider-esque game that came a bit earlier, and Indiana Jones seems to have had some influence over Barbie Explorer as well (the logo is directly reminiscent of Indy for instance). Also, you could climb walls diagonally in AOD... althoguh not very easy to do because there is no transition with the other directions 👀 TRU also had that in some way, with its freeform kind of climbable walls. I never played this but it would sure have been a guilty pleasure if I found it as a kid!
Had a collection of Barbie ps1 games. And sesame abc and 123. The games were weird but interesting with the glitches/bigs that would happen. Like Barbie's "long jump". Basically, if the player kept holding the desired direction of momentum. Like forwards. After a death, when Barbie respawned. The additional momentum would be added into the run allowing for farther leaps when the jump action was used. Compared to the regular jump distance she has. Also Action Man.
This is a nostalgic game for me, it was one of the first games my twin sister and I managed to complete. Some sections were so frustrating! It may not have aged well in some ways, but I wonder if this game lead me on the path to eventually getting into the Tomb Raider games as I grew up ❤
Not the target demographic: Why is she talking to me like I don't know how to read or understand anything Target demographic: I haven't learnt the meanings of these and glad they put a helpful voice to help me understand this game
You : hey Mom can you please buy me the Tomb Raider game for my PS1? Mom : we have Tomb Raider at home !!! (proceeds to show you Barbie Explorer game)...... You :
Ooooooooh?!🤩 Ngl, you got my attention as a Kaiju nerd, this I will be looking forward to seeing Nomad. Pls keep up with the amazing work, thanks you, you are awesome👍
3:48 We need a Barbie game with substance, real artifacts, and a reason to get them. Jokes aside, this actually has potential with the Barbie movie hype and the Tomb Raider series getting remastered.
Soo, Barby is the Child of Lara Croft and Crash Bandicoot. That Peacock Part really was funny, nice to show us that Game, it doesn't look AS bad, i have seen way worse in my Lifetime as a 90s Kid.
Lara was SO big, a german Punk Rock Band (DIE ÄRZTE (the doctors)) made a music video with her for their song "Männer sind Schweine" (men are Pigs) it's here on youtube as well
5:38 I'ts not the first time that someone point it out that. On the PS1 Tomb Raider games they didn't improve any of the movements of lara, the only stuff that continued to be enhanced was the enviroments, lara model and new mechanics but without sharpening the one's that were already in the game. I'ts one of the developers slip but we have to consider as well that they only have one year to deliver every new game until the year 2000.
I had a PS1 demo disc with this in it, you could only play the jungle level, i've complete it many times and always wondered what the full game was, played it years later on an emulator and can only say it is definitely a hidden gem of the PS1 Era, simple and fun.
Speaking of strangely nostalgic licensed games that ripped off gameplay from another title, Donald Duck Quack Attack comes to mind. Maybe it's worth a look?
this might be more speculation rather than informed, but I remember playing and LOVING barbie secret agent for PC, which came out in the same year and had similar platforming/globe trotting elements to it. the story wasn't fantastic or anything, but when I look back on it, it has the same "tomb raider clone for kids" vibe.
You probably should check Countdown Vampires as its a bad rip off of RE games, and for good licensed games ( at least as i remember them) theres Atlantis for the PS1 and Treasure Planet for PS1 and PS2. Also i really love your content, have been a fan for at least 3 or 4 years now.
the idea of Lara having slow moveset is so it can show you it's high effort, Lara's jacked even so climbing ladders for long time drains stamina and strength, same with monkeybars and general geometry. She is levels for supposed hours, so doing all these things consistently with high speed would actually be unrealistic..
In the video "I Am Your Leader" by Fat Boy Get Down, he refers to himself as Fat Boy Barbie. If Fat Boy Barbie went to climb or swing on ropes like Lara Croft, he'd make Lara look like she's climbing as fast as Usain Bolt's sprinting. On a more serious note, if you want to check out a licensed game thats a rip off of another type, try to check out The X-Files Resist or Serve on PS2. I don't want to go as far as to call it a Resident Evil rip off, as the term rip off makes it sounds like its terrible, as its actually a really good game. It has the original cast doing the voice work, it has different story POVs depending on if you're playing as Mulder or Scully, & it does have an episodic feel. Its worth checking out. It was clearly inspired by Resident Evil, but its pretty good for a licensed game, especially as it came out only a couple of years after the series ended.
OMG That was one of my childhood games! It's so cool hearing you talking about it 🥺 I even had a physical copy! I admit it was pretty hard and frustrating finishing it, had the same problem with jumping on platforms like you did 🤣 Someone said rip offs??😏 Have you ever heard of Chaos Break? It's totally a rip off of Resident evil! Locations, characters, puzzles are definitely inspired by it! By doing some researches I discovered it's the sequel of the arcade game Chaos Heat! What about Monsterseed? It's a rip off of many stuff like Final Fantasy/Digimon/Pokemon! I suggest you to check them out!
Holy crap I remember playing a demo of this game and thinking it was like Crash and Tomb Raider
Omg I know used to have a disk that was called like fall jump pack lol and it had game demos and this was one of them lol
@@lanawinters6161 The Jampacks!! Quintessential part of childhood hahaha
The way this game has lived rent free in my mind since I was a young child
And to all of us that live in real time, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO LARA CROFT
Yoooooo another Lara fan! Anyway Happy birthday Lara!
Happy bday Lara
happy valentine and happy birthday to lara croft
Happy Birthday Lara! ❤
Happy Lara Croft! 🥳🎉🎂
I'm sorry this is late 😅
The pre-rendered cutscenes make Barbie look like some kind of plastic doll.
Oh wait.
6:54 this is so freaking funny

You can actually spin dash in the Tomb Raider 3 remaster now!
How?
@@buggiemara4902 crouch (on knees, it doesnt work on the "doggy" position) and press roll

@@VilifiedOneCrystal Dynamics didn’t remastered the games. 🤦🏽♂️

Barbie being the Jlo of the situation copying Lara who is Mariah in this context.🤣
Barbie Explorer ☆ absolutely love the sound effects in Tibet ﹠ the training room
That mad cat at the vet was awesome! I couldn't stop laughing.
The peacock had me screaming into my pillow laughing lmao
Every time I see someone calling Lara "Laura", it literally hurts my ears
Originally Lara was supposed to be latina and her name was gonna be Laura Cruz. So if you think about it its not wrong to say Laura lol 😂
If you see it, it hurts your ears? Wow you must have super powers haha
@@94XBlackXEyedXPeaswell it kinda is wrong, cos they decided not to call her Laura. She is Lara Croft
@@94XBlackXEyedXPeas I mean, they didn't make her name Laura, they made her name Lara.

just when you thought Lara and Barbie couldn't get any cooler, they do a collab. Iconic.
Tomb Raider released the year I was born. I was a toddler when I first played/watched someone play it; so I was pretty scared, of the enemiesand sounds, but I also loved it so much. When my brothers got a PSone (the slim ps1), it included a demo disc that had this game in it.
Lara's pushing boxes was ridiculous even at the time with how smooth Raziel did it in Soul Reaver, there was no excuse to make them so limited.
I swear you unlocked a memory in my mind long forgotten. I loved playing this game. And it wasn't a bad game i would totally play it again. The nostalgia 😊
We need more vids like this. It's actually very well edited and have a lot of humor.
6:54 THE WAY THAT ELEPHANT JUST TRAMPLES HER WITHOUT HESITATION AND THE PAINED SCREAM 😭
90's Gamers: Tank controls in Tomb Raider are so difficult!!
Barbie Explorer: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
i actually love the tank controls and yes im an early 90s kid
My dad bought this for my sister, saying to her, and I quote, "it's just like Tomb Raider".
I reckon I still have it amongst my game collection
I played that game!!! I was a little 7 years old Lara Croft fan and loved everything that reminded me TR 😂
The sound of collecting the diamonds is the same as in Shrek Super Party on ps2/GC. Guess it was from the same devs
this is a game that, until today, I didn't know if I had totally made up in a memory.
2:55 AH THE MODERN CONTROLS in the remasters! XD
Treasure Planet was pretty much a Jak and Daxter copy.
X Files had 2 games I believe. Incredible show based off real events a lot of the time in some way.
A lot of the smoother climbing mechanics like diagonal climbing and faster pushing actually got realized earlier than the reboot games...in the LAU trilogy
In defence of my queen, Lara, I feel obligated to mention that she did get to climb diagonally in AOD, right before the reboot.
I always remembered playing this game from the age of 3/4 but I couldn't remember the name, thank you for unlocking childhood memories 😂 I got into tomb raider a few years later
lol the spin dash move was actually cut from the games, and then brought back first by fans through hacking and now in the TR 1-3 remaster
If covering a Barbie game is good enough for Gmanlives, it's more than good enough for InkRibbon.
*I think I still have the demo version of this game on one of those demo disc for the Playstation 1.*
IVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE ELSE WHO KNEW ABOUT THIS! I played this on a ps1 demo disk when I was like 6

Yeah I think Caddicarus did say that the game is shit.

Funny licensed game worthy of a vid: BARNYARD
Please it's so funny and underrated, the milk squirting game alone is chefs kiss
yuuuuup the premise was tomb raider esque... but it was definitely a crash bandicoot knockoff hehe which would be fine, except worse controls

Other than the vague resemblance of a low-poly female form of Lara/Barbie, it looks way more like Crash Bandicoot than Tomb Raider.
