I am not an American, but I listen with pride when I hear Johnny Cash do this. I wish we had the same pride in our little country, but we don't. At least I am proud of the Australian flag & the people that have defended my freedom under it's colours.

That's the kind of real American people outside of America can relate to. He loved his God and loved his country, but he never pandered or preached. A true American hero? A true man, I say.

It brings back very bad memories of where one has been and what one had to do to support "THAT OLD FLAG". It also brings back the memories of U.S. citizens spitting on you as you pass through airport corridors returning from duty in some of those controversial places. THAT OLD FLAG though, does represent us all and thankfully so. My advice to all, before you criticize our flag or country, go live a year or two in another and compare, if you like theirs better, stay.

"The Man In Black" is truly missed. John, you were a true patriot.
So many forces have tried to take down this country. The Nazis, Communism, and hate mongerers that used airplanes as missiles to try to destroy our beautiful New York City. And yes, from 1861-1865, we even waged war on each other.
They all failed. This was, is, and always will be a land where freedom reigns. R.I.P. John, we miss you.

No generation holds the monopoly on Americamism. Reading the framers I think they would have their qualms and disagreements but overall they would be proud how long we kept the system as best as humans could. It was an ideal revolutionary document. Always difficult to implement

indeed we are bud, There are those of us who are aprized of the situation and are taking nessary action underneath the seams to restore our nation. You can count on us through petition after petition, till all redress of grievances have been exhausted. It is after that time you will see the 3% emerge once more to retake liberty from those who stole it away.

Commenters below who try to politicize this recitation embarass only themselves. The flag waves so that we all can speak and live freely. At times the silhouetted profile of Cash here reminded me of Lincoln himself, who would have appreciated this greatly. For him to see the today's Americans cast venomous hate at those with whom they disagree would rebreak his heart. He thought that the great battle in this country he so loved was over. So much for the better angels of our nature in 2008

Err okay, even tho America freed us in WW2, we are now just as easily asked, and obliged, to sent OUR sons and daughters to Irak, and all these other AMERICAN wars. The big difference here, is that America starts these wars, and we simply got invaded. Ofcourse America freed us, but that was not because of generosity, tho highly appreciated. It was for America's benefits to free Europe, and now they still use it, by pretty much obliging us to send our troops,

@miquellos12 Yeah? How much of NATO's strength comes from US commitments and how much do each country who hosts US bases provide in the way of manpower?
As to your comment about knowing geography, yes, there are some idiots who don't know whether Europe is a country or a continent. That's the fault of their teachers as well as themselves. There are a lot of people who weren't formally educated yet they learned this stuff on their own.

I don't think you need to google much further to see some very contrasting positions on US intervention... in Iraq, or Vietnam, or Korea or Afghanistan... And how is it a narrow minded last statement? We've intervened militarily around the world many times since we became top dog post WW2 and you don't need a history book to discern it wasn't because we wanted to free the poor oppressed people. We invaded Iraq, a dictatorship, but we didn't invade Saudi Arabia, an even more totalitarian regime.

and also fot the economical status.Don't pretend like Americans care all that much for other countries. Ask a random american wether they know if Europe is a country or a continent, or if they can point out for instance Spain, Holland, and France. Besides Geography, they also don't know what is happening in libany, Egypt etc. I'm not saying ALL american, but the average joe doesn't know this kind of stuff.

Don't get me wrong, America is a beautiful country. Everytime I come there I have a great time. However, the patriotism, the national pride is too much for me. To feel united through your county is great, but in America's case, it leads to arrogance and the need to dominate everyone. America won't last long if you ask me. You feel American, even though you might be europeans. It was the europeans that made America, and tho you might not realise it, ur ancestors are french, dutch, italian, spanis

Well that's a pretty narrow minded last statement. If you can't see it perhaps you haven't looked deep enough. Such as, oh, say a history book. Hell just Google or Wiki it if you're too lazy to go to a library. Desert Storm, Op Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Better yet, talk to a Kuwaiti who lived through Desert Storm. See the tears in his eyes and his gratitude to the USA for liberating his home from those pricks.
