  • Hi everyone - this is my first but hopefully not last RUclips video. In this video, I'm showing a picture slide show of how I designed, carved, and assembled this custom guitar. This is the first thing that I've ever carved in my life and I love the way it turned out. I don't really know how many hours it took but the entire project from start to finish took about 5 months. I'll post videos later with some recordings of the sound which is actually superb. Its a great blues guitar thanks to the Texas Specials I've loaded into it. My goal on this was to make all the knobs and accent pieces custom. If you wan t more info on how this was created, visit my blog: appliednonsense...
    Thanks!
    Dbo
    Here are some details on the various parts:
    Body: not sure what type of wood (possibly ash or alder)
    Neck: Fender MIM strat (maple neck w/ rosewood fretboard)
    Inlay (initials on back): Honduran Rosewood
    V/T/T knobs - East Indian Rosewood
    Selector knob, Pickup Covers: American Walnut
    Pickguard & back cover: East Indian Rosewood
    Tuning Pegs: Cocobolo Rosewood
    Wood Finishes: I used a shellac treatment & then finished all wooden parts with a Danish Oil mixture
    Metal hardware: mixture from several other guitars, mostly MIM strats
    Pickups: Fender Custom Shop Texas Specials (replaced white covers w/ black covers & added the walnut tops)

      "Il volo del gabbiano" by Rodolfo Maltese & Massimo Alviti. Google it and you will find it online.

    As a random commenter on the internet, beautiful and inspiring work. The carving is great, a fine balance between simplistic yet elegant design. For me, if only you'd worked to hide the strats excessive screws and maybe customize the fretboard inlays too, this would be closer to perfection, but that's just more to my taste.

    • @SirDboTexas
      @SirDboTexas  8 лет назад

      +ydin9 All good suggestions. I may try to do some of this on the Rose themed Strat I'm carving up now. Especially the inlays. There are some really nice vine/rose inlays that you can get....I might try my hand at that but I've never done inlay work other than the logo on this which I cheated with and used a CNC...seems pretty tough especially if I have to pull the fret wire to do it, and then re-install it, and then file them own. Re-fretting is a ton of manual work (usually costs $250-$350 to do it from a repair shop). But that can always be done later too...

    • @ydin9
      @ydin9 8 лет назад

      SirDboTexas
      Well, if you can invest in the tools and material you should try and learn fret working and you'll be the one taking that 300 in from your buddies.You obviosly have the skills and patience for it at least :)
      While it's probably good to learn the inlaying manually I think the CNC isn't cheating unless you really want to emphasize the hand carved look, then you want to do it manually. But in a pinch you could also add slight imperfections in the CNC design to create the illusion.
      Keep up the good work, I hope I can make such beautiful creations myself :)

      Gorilla Ink Design House At the time when I was making it, I definitely didn't anticipate putting it on YT. I took lots of pictures along the way for my blog, and after it was done someone suggested I throw it up on YT. Stay tuned...I've got another guitar concept ready to go and will be putting up videos along the way showing the progress, and trying to explain the process from start to finish.

    just find glass from an old window paine. break some and you'll find that one or more sides will be razor sharp. As you scrape the wood,youll find a lot comes off and the surface is smooth. you can use the straight, curve and point of each broken piece.Once it gets blunt,pick up another and away you go again. My best answer would be try it on a scrap piece of wood and find out for yourself

    I REALLY LIKE IT! If there's ONE THING I'd change, it'd be that chrome jack plate. Can you carve one of those in rosewood to match!? lol. No really, great job! I tried to carve a charvel body back in the 90s. It ended up in the trash like a week later!
    I'd say I'd have left her nipple exposed, but I guess that would have scratched up your picking forearm! Especially when it got cold out!

  • @SirDboTexas
    @SirDboTexas  11 лет назад

    Thanks! As for the neck...I had already bought the neck on eBay, without really knowing how good the body was going to turn out. I should have put a better neck on it, but after hearing the sound (which is really good) I'm afraid to change anything. It really is one of the best sounding strats I've ever played. I prefer a fatter neck than this, so it isn't quite as comfortable as some others I have played/owned, but like I said, I don't know if I'm gonna swap it out.

  • @SirDboTexas
    @SirDboTexas  11 лет назад

    Wish I could help you out I just don't have the time. I've been meaning to carve a second one and haven't been able to do it yet. Plus I don't have enough confidence in my carving skills to take someone's guitar (or money) just yet. You should check out GigsCarvedGuitars or Doug Rowell. I believe they do commissioned customs like this but I could be wrong. And they are both pros so you will get a great looking guitar for sure.

  • @SirDboTexas
    @SirDboTexas  11 лет назад

    I wouldn't say it was hard, but it was more involved than I thought it was going to be when I started. I work full time so had to work on it in the evenings and it took a really long time to carve it (~4 months on and off). Partly because I was very careful and went really slow on purpose, partly because I wasn't sure about technique. But I will say that I learned as I went and by the end I had a good feel for how the wood was going to react to my different gauges. Keep your tools sharp too!

  • @SirDboTexas
    @SirDboTexas  12 лет назад

    Just for fun...this is the first one I've attempted although I'm working on a concept for another one. I've often wondered how much you could sell a one-of-a-kind hand carved guitar for. I know there are other professional carvers that can do them for fairly inexpensive. Check out GigsCarvedGuitars channel...he does some great unique stuff and I've seen some forum postings from people who have bought his guitars for an affordable price. Google Carverdoug and you will see some more examples.

  • @SirDboTexas
    @SirDboTexas  12 лет назад

    For the finish I used a shellac to pre-treat the wood and seal it and then just rubbed with a couple of coats of Danish oil. The Danish oil hardens the wood slightly and protects it from moisture. You need to re-apply it occasionally (maybe once a year) to keep it in good shape. But I didn't want to put a clear polyurethane coating on the wood because I didn't want it to have that fake plastic looking finish. The Danish oil protects but has a low sheen and allows the wood grain to pop.

    the music is just some of the free royalty free music that Google has on RUclips that you can add to your videos as background music. It is "II Volo del Gabbiano" by Rodolfo Maltese & Massimo Alviti - if you visit this video in a regular web browser (i.e. not mobile browser) it lists the artist & song info right below the "likes/dislikes" and has a link to buy it on iTunes or Amazon.

  • @SirDboTexas
    @SirDboTexas  11 лет назад

    Sorry but I'm a bit too much of an amature to take someone else's guitar and attempt a carving. The truth is I don't trust my skills yet. I work full time and haven't even had time to work on a 2nd guitar of my own. You might check out GigsCarvedGuitars or Doug Rowell. Both have videos here on youtube and both do incredible work (I believe for commission).

  • @SirDboTexas
    @SirDboTexas  12 лет назад

    Thanks! You should definitely check out GigsCarvedGuitars channel on RUclips. He has some really cool stuff, including an "Aliens" themed guitar - interestingly enough H.R. Giger did the original Aliens concepts for the movies in the '80s. Gig also did a really awesome steampunk bio-chick carved guitar, one of my favorites.

  • @SirDboTexas

    Haha....yeah I actually thought about replacing all the hardware with gold. I may still do that but it sounds so good right now I don't want to mess with the setup. I'm worried I won't be able to get it to sound the same. I would like to put a fatter neck on it too.

  • @SirDboTexas
    @SirDboTexas  12 лет назад

    @jigglesneeker Thanks! It certainly turned out better than I was hoping for. It's literally the first thing I've ever carved, so it gives me hope that I can continue to get better and make more guitars in the future. Ideas for my next one welcome!

  • @SirDboTexas
    @SirDboTexas  11 лет назад

    It sounds awesome. The carving didn't really take away from the sustain as many people thought it might. The sound is great. It has a very dry tone which is great for many styles of music. Check out some of my other videos and you can hear it.

    USE THESE TIPS!!! your work fallows mine remarkably. I have an amazing tip or two for you. I sand the same steps as you. 1000 is great for a fine finish, but a perfect finish happens at 2000. I go 60 and 120 for shaping. then 220, 400, 1000 and then 2000. At TWO thousand you get all the grain back. if you sand it just one more step at 2000 you will have the most amazing finish you never thought possible. also, if you use wood DYE after sanding and NOT stain, you will get to easily control the color of the wood while keeping ALL of the grain. youtube wood dyes. you'll be amazed. I even use the exact same yellow and orange towel. oh also, after 120 and before 220 mix acetone and pen ink "4 pens to a quarter cup of acetone" and lay that on relatively thick. at 220 you will be easily sanding away 98 percent of the black color. its called "popping the grain". when the project is finished, you will completely understand why you had done it. I'm sure you already know this part but, stay away from soft woods. I hope these tips can help you add $1500 to your final value. they did for me.

      It doesn't really get that dirty. I've been playing it for years and yeah it gets a little bit of grime in the cracks, but overall not too bad. I use an air compressor on it every few months and it does a good job. Also rub it down with new coat of the clear danish oil occasionally to keep the finish up.

      I've never done a commission work. I don't trust myself with someone else's guitar as I'm not a professional carver and they take me about a year to complete. I thought about doing a 3D scan and cnc replicating to sell copies but just haven't done it.

    Beautiful work sir, one suggestion, go a little bit darker in the recesses with the stain or oil.
