- In this video of my entry into the Great guitar build off 2020, I start to add more detail to the feathers on the wings. Using knives and chisels a gentle look can be achieved.
If you'd like to start carving yourself, check out my beginner guide:-

I subbed for this build. You unofficial guys are KILLING IT!!
Your carving is impressive. Jason Makes is doing a pretty detailed flying V. This is gunna be sick when you're done, I believe.
Dave McKinney thanks! I’ve seen the competition, it’s good!
I found your mini-lesson on when to use a mallet--and more importantly, why or why not--fascinating. Obvious, once explained, but not so beforehand. Great presentation and great work, looking forward to the next installment.
HenchMusic58 thanks. I just realised it was probably a question people would ask. Hit me up if you think of another!
really love it. You possess the patience of Job, lol...I do sketches and lots fine line work is not my favorite thing. You, however, make it look easy.
Mike Howard well thank you very much.
You are a natural infront of the camera.
A good teacher too.
Great work.
Maybe a black wash over the white to make it pop.
It’s getting something a bit special... 🤫
You could Gold leaf it.....that would be special.
For contrast.....your next build should be Demon wings.
Ooh black and sharp! You order it I’ll make it!
Personally I have found that the more creative and artistic people keep disastrously unkempt working spaces, so you are right in there bud! It's obviously not like you don't have the patience to clean up after yourself! The carving is coming along very nicely! I know you will finish this with the same care and attention you have used in every phase of this build. I trust the final owner will have an appreciation for the time and effort you have put in to this artwork!
Thank you very much! Now where’s that brush...
You can add definition to the feathers using pyrography. It’s used quite extensively for realistic bird carving and is very effective even under the paint.
Tim Done oh thanks. I do work with pyrography, but never thought to try it underneath paint. I shall give it a go!
That technique for defining the spine of the feather was really helpful and not something I'd have come to on my own I don't think.
Congratulations on bursting through the 1k sub barrier!
thanks Chris! The only way is up! (start singing now!)
Keep a fire extinguisher in the shop, just in case.
I totally agree with that comment about adding texture to the guitar top. Flat surfaces and shiny paint is just OK. I like to see a theme carving to give the guitar life.
David Anderson even something really simple has spectacular effect under lighting!
I"m really enjoying this project. It's one of a handful of the unofficial entries that I am following closely. I think this is going to be an amazing thing of beauty when you are finished. You have a subscriber in Reno, NV. U.S.A.
Tahoe Mike crazy that I get to interact with people all over the world because of the shop in my backyard!
@@KingBespokeCreations And another subscriber from Vancouver Canada, just love how you explain what you are doing and great to watch.
After spending some time with hand tools I realized how versatile can simple shovel or hammer be. Especially when you use them to create instead of furiously smashing stuff
Now you are telling me that mallet is used to be more precise. My gut feeling was right 😃
I love your build. It gets better with every episode. Keep on making!
Artur Brzozowski thanks man! Any knocking stick will do!
Once again great work 👍👍
TheJuksu thank you very much!
I have used a wood burning pen to detail feathers, with good results.
Karl Stewart yep, I do love bit of pyrography! 🔥
I'm really enjoying watching your videos, so inspiring. I love working with wood but haven't done much in the way of detailed carving, so I think it will be time soon to invest in some good chisels!!
Steve Walker Guitars link in the description! Go on, treat yourself!
@@KingBespokeCreations fantastic! I'll check it out 👍
Great concept and carving but on a shitty bit of pine, it feels like a waist! Granted you're painting it. If it doesn't interfere with your hand too much, an eagle head inspired, head stock could be something.
Antony Elliott yes the wings are getting painted. The reason for the pine (usually a odd choice I know!) is that it can from a church pew! I couldn’t resist the link to the angel wings!
@@KingBespokeCreations Oh I see, yeah I get it.
lookin' good so far. for the very small lines try placing your blade on the work and rocking it back, instead of scribing them. this will automatically make the line decrease depth as they go. good vid, can't wait to see how it turns out.
nunofyer fingbizness top tip! Thanks!
@@KingBespokeCreations my pleasure, hope it helps
Going to look spectacular with the white, love the videos too!
Kyle C I’m looking forward to it myself!
A cool counter to this would be dragon wings wrapped around an egg.
Dave McKinney ooh! You order it, I’ll make it!
Top job lad 👍
CaptScratchy Beard thank you very much!
Cannot wait to see the white paint applied. I feel it'll really come alive.
Old Man Zen I hope so! Paints and finishes are always the scary bit for me!
I said you had the skills. What a fabulous job.
Steve Roberts it’s good you had faith!
@@KingBespokeCreations you showed your previous stuff and I was very impressed. I have faith in you. Be well
Your workshop is a glorious mess. Never be ashamed of it. If it bothers you, then find ways to achieve just enough order for your comfort and safety. Tidy minds are not often creative minds, though it can and does happen. But creativity and mess very often come bundled together. (I write this as I'm procratinating getting ready for my online virtual decluttering meeting...)
Good with your meeting! Thanks.
@@KingBespokeCreations Thanks, it went well. BTW, I should have emailed you about that carved Squier body. It's lovely, but I decided I should build a bass if anything; that's what I mostly play these days. I hope youncind a good home for it.
Xubuntu47 well if you fancy a carved bass, just let me know!
hi, it looks outstanding and original, great work, but I thought the wings will not be bulky, maybe the same design, but a bit thinner...
activese once the back is carved the overall thickness will be largely reduced. Thanks.
@@KingBespokeCreations oh thank you for your kind answer, I really like your design and built
It is also said: "Creative minds are seldom tidy".
Amen
Beautiful! This is the ggbo entry I’m most excited about 🤘🏻
That says a lot to me! Thank you!
Looking good👌
Such a labour of love! It’s looking beautiful so far, can’t wait to see the finished guitar!!
Thanks chuck!
Great job 👌
anuallaf thanks man!
Ow do!
This guitar is going to look so freaking cool. Loving all your vids so far as they are just so chilled out.
Adam Povey thanks man! I’m so pleased it’s generally approved by the Guitar community!
@@KingBespokeCreations Knowledge givers like you Ben and so many others are showing that a great guitar doesn't depend upon the label on it but on the love and care put into it. It's a joy to watch you guys create some fantastic guitars and freely share your skills. Thank you.
Wow Chris, stunning as always!
Thank you, the guitars not bad either! 🤣
The only thing I'd've done different, sliced me pigging fingers
Glenn Lilley haha! Please be careful! Honestly, the sharper your tools, the less force you need, the less you’ll do any damage!
@@KingBespokeCreations and the cleaner the cut
Awesome cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
G’day mate!
Bahaa. 👍. Which part of England are you from. My wife and I were out past Oxford in the Cottswalds this time last year. Beautiful area.
Guzzo of Oz very pretty! I’m further north, at the top of Yorkshire. Whereabout in Oz are you? I have friends and family in Melbourne
We’re just north of Brisbane up in Queensland. Lovely part of the world. Feeling sorry for our Melbourne aussies. Under lock and key at the moment.
