I can’t take my eyes off of it. It is positively beautiful. My father was a Carpenter who had a work shop with the most fascinating tools which I was reminded of while watching this video. He always allowed me to try to use them and did not consider them off limits when I was growing up. I could smell some of the chemicals as I saw you use them and it felt like I was there with you. My mother was an Architect who also shared her interests with me. I am a 74yr old lady living in a Condo of a gated community north of New Orleans. Thank you for sharing your gift with others and me. It gave me such joy to watch you so carefully bring the piece back to what it once was.
I am glad when it awakens such beautiful memories in them. 😀

@@barbarat5729 Maybe. Barbara, here are a lot of non-native speakers.
I went through the same process restoring an antique piano. They had painted that same ugly cream over it, and then paint it black over that. They stripped off the molding and stapled Naugahyde all over it. The saddest part is that it’s still an excellent instrument with a great sound board. Made by the Chicago Cable company, it was a Greek design and all of the decorative column pieces from the front are permanently gone. But I managed to get a decent black brown stain on it. Due to extensive paint damage, I couldn’t go with the original cherry wood color. Watching this video really brings back a lot of memories.
😀
what a travesty! stapled naugahyde?!
It always makes me a little sad when other restorers throw out the antique lock and key, so thank you for not only keeping it, but restoring it as well! 🖤🖤🖤 It turned out absolutely gorgeous!!

@@doreenclarke863 Thanks. No. I usually give them away.
As a smith I've made a whole load of replacement keys for furniture restorers. Never ditch the original locks, some may even hold their own value
No matter how old the lock, a good smith will cut you a key, infact the older the easier (antique furniture locks are generally exceedingly simple single-lever designs or simple warded setups that pick in a minute or two)

I love that there is no annoying music, just simple, wonderful woodworking noises and satisfying visuals. We had a workshop/woodshop in out basement when I was a child, so this was such a treat to watch and listen too. Many thanks for this great compliment. 😀
What a great project! I often wonder why people paint over such gorgeous wood.... but then I recall that when I was a teenager, I did the same thing... painted my Mom's little side-table white... 40 years later, I stripped off the white paint and re-finished the beautiful wood with Danish Oil and I have it in my living room 60 years after I painted it white... Your project turned out beautiful!
😊
Not everyone likes the chaos of woodgrain. It's distracting to me. I like my walls and furniture monochrome and with clean sharp lines. That said, all those little details on this piece would be too distracting even in pure white.
@@SirBlade666 Yes, as they say, one man's meat is another man's poison... we are all different and isn't it great that there are also wonderful plain, simple, painted pieces of furniture? Something for everyone's tastes.
@@Dakiniwoman 👍
I think it’s more about when people paint irresponsibly in ways that damage the piece or dry the wood - it shows a kind of lack of care and wastefulness that is irresponsible. At least since we have access to so much information about good ways to do it these days - I mean making mistakes is fine and there’s no need to preserve everything - I am making an 1800’s spinning wheel operational again and there are some sacrifices that must be made (needing to replace the parts with lead in them for example) but it’s important to be respectful of our resources too
I really admire your willingness to clean out every last tiny crevice. The result is absolutely gorgeous!

When i was a little girl, in 1970, my mother wanted to give me a set of furniture for my bedroom like other girls had. Our neighbor was throwing away old dark furniture. All scratched and used. At night, my brother, my mother, and three year old me secretly took the garbage furniture into our garage, secret, because we did not want the neighbors to know we were poor! We painted the dresser, headboard, and a little desk she found elsewhere cream color with gold trim, just like this piece. I was a very happy little girl, with my matching suite. My grandmother sewed curtains and bedspread! About 20 years later, i am getting ready to move away. My mother and i spend afternoons in the summer sanding all the paint off the dresser, desk, and headboard, and refinishing. What were we thinking? We are horrified! Beautiful oak furniture, and we painted it! I take my beautiful antique oak furniture to my new apartment, and i still have it, years later. I fix and refinish furniture all my life, now i am pretty old, but that is how furniture got painted!
This is the development of a piece of furniture. Look on the bright side. It's a piece of history. Yours. Regards. 😀
My dad and I did the same. He would drive me to school everyday. Each day we would follow the trash trucks and we found treasures. Refinished everything. If we didn't keep it, he sold it. Great times with dad, mom and brother. ❤❤❤
Thank you for this video. I just stumbled upon it and it brought back so many childhood memories. At 76 I can still remember the smell of my grandfather’s wood working basement. I can visualize the large wooden vice he used, my job was to turn the wood handle to close it up. I think I was about six or seven when he taught me how to use a hand saw. Even though I was his only granddaughter I think he recognized my mechanical skills even at a young age. Those lessons served me well as an adult, leaving the typewriter behind I worked with my hands in many areas, wood and machine shop and even in a small foundry. Again, thank you for bringing back cherished memories. 😊

Biedermeier was an early 19th century art movement from central Europe. Wikipedia says 1815 to 1848. Pieces had straight lines with curved overhanging edges at the top and often used matched burl wood as a design element. Expensive pieces had gilded trims and sometimes used ebony for detailing. I once owned a pine Biedermeier desk from Sweden that was made for a lower class market and had none of those fancy pieces except for the curved and overhanging wide top. I would say this piece, small but made of mahogany, was for a middle market.
Ich denke, es ist eher zweites Biedermeier, gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, also um 1870 entstanden.
All previous owners made a mess out of this beautiful cabinet.

Very nice job! A trick I learned while working for a furniture restorer was after using paint stripper, scrape off the excess paint then use wire wool with hot soapy water, it cleans up the last bits of paint and stripper out of the grain and areas of detail. It often saves having to remove some parts.

I really like the Biedermeier style and am sorry that later generations did not appreciate the heavy forms. The true beauty was in the wonderful wood patterns. My favorite is the light fruit wood veneers and black lacquer.
😊👍
Don't know who painted this but they should be punished severely. Covering all that beautiful mahogany--what were they thinking? Wonderful restoration.
😊
Over the years fine furniture is used, people sell it and the new buyers may not like the look of the cabinet and decide to paint it to match their decor or their style and hide scratches and dings that come with life. They think the new look is nice and live with it for more years until tastes change and they either move it to the curb or sell it in a yard sale. The fact that it was once valuable is lost. Most people don’t care who made it…..it’s not a piece of art to be polished and showcased…it’s a cabinet or a chair or an old table. Young people today look for bargains on line or in second hand shops because it’s what they can afford. Take it home and throw a coat of paint on it and use it and love it. Young neighbours of mine bought an old house with a large beautiful fireplace mantle with attached mirror all of it ornately carved and stained. His wife thought it too dark for the room and so they painted it white. Their friends all thought it looked much better. A hundred years from now new owners will gnash their teeth and wonder why someone would ruin a work of art. But that’s how life moves and so we are grateful for the restorers who can bring back the original beauty.
In the 70s people painted over everything. My Mom used a product that supposedly made the piece look 'antique'.
😂😂 Yes for sure 😂😂
@@bunker123sugar haha yes I remember that!

That was the most satisfying paint stripping I have seen lately. Beautiful wood under all the paint.
wishing even one in ten pieces would strip that cleanly
😊
If the stripper dries too fast before it does its job, I’ve found that adding mineral spirits helps thin it out and perform better. It also helps a lot with cleanup. For instance if the areas the stripper didn’t do a great job, adding some mineral spirits to your steel would or wire brush will help take it off more quickly. Also if you want to remove varnish and stain from hare to reach places, acetone works great.
Thanks for the tip. 😀

@highpsi11 Some Biedermeier does indeed come with scrolled or clawed feet and occasionally extremely elaborate.
@@Consrignrant OK. Thanks. I really do not know it. But now I think it's a replica. Made around 1900.
@@chrigunrestauration The work of your hands is excellent and the result is really magnificent. In Vienna it would be certainly considered a copy, true Biedermeiers are those made between the Vienna Congress and the 1848 Revolte.. I have never payed attention to the Biedermeier Schränke feet but in seeing some examples in internet it is true that most of them are just straight. The top, with rounded corners reminds me of furniture of the 1930ies, more than Biedermeier.

I've an old K&E writing desk that I refinished. It is full of worm holes too. I left the holes exactly as they were and didn't try to fill them. With the application of a good stabilizing agent there really is no need to do much of anything with the holes. Просто смешно вас читать.мне не нравится такой цвет мебели.я бы ее тоже перекрасила
It worked something like this: The 1800s and early 1900s homes were dark. Lighting was gas lamps or candles. But good quality wood was easily available, so most furniture was finished as natural wood. Often the finish would darken with age, but the furniture was still in keeping with the house.
By the 1950s electric lights were common in most cities and some parts (but not all) of the country. The electric lights made the inside of the house brighter, but the old dark furniture just sucked up light, and was considered an eyesore. For those that couldn't buy new furniture easily, repainting the old furniture in lighter colors was the usual thing. This cabinet seems to have been repainted moderately well. I don't see a lot of brush strokes and paint runs, and the white and gold probably worked fairly well when it was still fairly new.
Now we still have bright houses, in fact rather brighter houses than the 1950s, but everything is plastic or metal, and wood is a luxury, or at least unusual. Obviously (to us) natural wood seems more elegant and exotic than painted wood, and a dark piece of furniture contrasts with all of the lighter colored plastic, and blends well with the black frame around the flat screen TV. So the now chipped, stained, and fading paint comes back off.
@@lwilton Thanks for the explanation. That's how it makes sense. 😀👍 Greetings
WOW, it's too beautiful...I love it,your work is impressive....thanks for your video....es un trabajo digno de admiración...Saludos desde Miami FL....🤩🤩🤩🥰💯
Thanks. Greetings from Germany
Why anyone would paint over such a beautiful wood is incomprehensible. It’s gorgeous. Well done.
😊
Biedermeier or not, it’s a beautiful piece of furniture. You did a very nice job with it.
😊
Came out beautiful.
The before and after shows the amazing contrast.
From what looked like an old metal cabinet to a beautiful wood cabinet
Thanks 😀
Amazing job!
I always learn a lot watching your videos 😊
That makes me happy. 😊
😊Hello! Really enjoying your content especially your wood working skills. Watching you scrape off, in order to remove the old paint is immensely satisfying and rewarding! Thank you for sharing this project!
Teşekkürler. Bu beni mutlu ediyor. 😀
I still don’t know if it’s a Biedermeier, but you certainly did restore it to it’s glory! It certainly is much more beautiful than being covered with that paint.
Thanks. No, it is a replica from around 1900
Maravilhosa restauração linda 💖✨❤️
😊
I’m not sure I’d let my 100 plus year old chest of drawers get restored by this guy to be honest! ♥️🏴
I don't take any orders
What's that mean???
@@milo5315 I do believe he means he doesn’t take commissions.
@@beverlyhayshouston2770 I meant the original comment, just kind of an odd thing to say?
Sorry but that is not a professional restorer he does not have what is needed to be a professional antique restorer of wood furniture but if that’s good enough for Americans think before you paint a piece!
I was glued to the screen watching your painstaking work, and seeing how beautiful it turned out to be.
all i see are scratch marks in the grains frm usng steel tools on wood, you stripped and repainted it, it iss not a full resto, looks not bad from a distance
Could you do better?
What a magnificent restoration work. The ease by which you achieve your result belies the years of experience. Thanks for the look into your work.
😀
У меня аж дух перехватила,от изумительной работы.Мастер вы волшебник.Браво.Спасибо вам огромное .❤❤❤
😀
This is so comforting. My grandparents used to own an antique shop and would often be renovating old furniture. Sometimes i would help.
You always miss the ones you love who have passed away, but then certain things trigger really strong memories and its like you're right back there, with them.
Im so glad i stumbled across your video. You do beautiful work.
It must take you 10 times longer to do while trying the record each step. You have so much patience.
🙏
Thank you for the nice comment. I am very happy if my video reminds you of the past. 😀
Yes. The work takes about 2x as long due to the video recordings. 🤷♀️ Greetings
Watching this restoration was mesmerizing and so satisfying to the end. The work, the time given to this piece, the use of so many tools …. Such a lost art in todays world of cheap disposable furniture. Bravo to this master artist.
Thank you 😀
Thank you for a beautiful, relaxing (for me😊) restoration. It makes me sick when I see old, beautiful pieces covered in paint!!!
😀
Such fine work, just beautiful. I am surprised by the amount of force needed and used to get it to the finish. Amazing Job
😀
That was a labor of love! You gotta really love doing this to put in so much tedious work. Very satisfying.
