    Canadian Health care experience: I live in Ontario, Canada. My sixteen month health care journey started last year in February when I ended up in hospital with pneumonia. While there I was checked and tested for just about everything and it was discovered that I had an irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure that would make me prone to strokes. So before I left the hospital I was given a prescription for 4 medications (that cost me $16.44 at the pharmacy). I then had a follow up appointment six weeks later and because of a side effect one of my medications was changed. I had a follow up check up and consultation in October.
    At that time I told them I was bleeding a very little on a regular basis. The Heart team immediately set me up with a gynecologist who did a Biopsy in January. The result was cancer. By February 19 I had a hysterectomy and after my six week convalescence I had three radiology sessions in April to make sure all the cancer was gone. (I will continue to have follow up appointments for that surgery.) In the meantime I had a consultation and check up with my Heart doctor and his team and after discussion I was sent down to have an X-ray to make sure my lungs are not retaining fluid. My medication was further fine tuned. At that consultation I showed the Heart doctor a lump that had started small in January but was getting bigger and as it was on my temple - brushing my hair often damaged it. His immediate response was "well that's coming off" and referred me to a dermatologist. I got an appointment within two weeks. I met with the specialist who told me it was a form of skin cancer but mild and not likely to happen again. He removed the offending lump immediately and sent me on my way with a follow up appointment. There was no bill. (If I elect to have cosmetic work done there will probably be a cost and I can get supplemental insurance for that or for other choices like guaranteeing a private room, etc.)
    If I have to wait for treatment it is usually because I can or I need to have the problem get to the point where it is most beneficial for success - i.e. Cataracts. My out of pocket costs for all of that was $16.44 for prescriptions, $45 for the ambulance last year, $60 for aids after radiology. The total was $121.44 for all the treatments, appointments and surgery. Once a year I pay $100 for the government pharma prescriptions. have no complaints about Canada's health care although Dental would be good. The hospitals are privately owned with the big insurer being the government.
    The health premium is paid by Ontario residents through the personal income tax system. Money collected through the tax helps fund Ontario's health services. The health premium ranges from $0 if your taxable income is $20,000 or less, to $900 a year if your taxable income is more than $200,600. (Mar 25, 2019. )
    Single payer (medicare for all) would have similar outcomes for Americans with the added benefit that the government costs would be approximately half of what they are now. So why would a Senator or Congress person vote against single payer at half the taxpayer cost that would cover everyone for everything which would also bring down other costs like bankruptcy, funerals, miserable suffering from chronic conditions??? It can't be job loss because most of the employees working in health insurance would switch to the Medicare for All administration and live healthier lives because they are there to help and say 'yes', not decline treatment wherever possible. It is because of money - Big Pharma is bribing your government. Lawmakers should have to abstain from a vote if the beneficiary of that vote gave more than the individual amount allowed per citizen for his campaign. Anyone who gets $100,000 or half a million dollars from a vested interest is not working for the people. Apparently you can buy a vote for less than $1500. I don't know which is more insulting - that your elected official sold his vote or that he sold it so cheaply.

      You can subscribe to The Jacobin. Just about all their analyses, over a broader and pressing range of issues, are brilliant. A yearly subscription (4 issues) is almost $30 (print) and $19,95 (digital). There is a 'solidarity' subscription if you have money to spare. The extra money is used by The Jacobin to subscribe and support other left wing publications.

    This was EXCELLENT!!! The part about it's not being your fault -- I've followed Bernie for about 15 or more years and I understood, intellectually (I thought), what he's about, but I continued to feel about my own life that it was my fault that I got a degree, the only one in my family, but didn't make enough money. (And they thought it was my fault). I also went through a medical bankruptcy. It wasn't until I had listened to every speech Bernie gave in 2015-16 on RUclips that I realized it was not my fault. But it was this podcast that reinforced and articulated so well why I love him, and gave me more arguments I can use with other people. Now I'm going to listen another 2 times to make sure it all sank in. Thank you SO MUCH!

    I enjoyed this podcast so much. I just have a thought about Bernie's townhalls. Should this not be the venue where the differences, as was articulated during this podcast, between his Green New Deal (GND) and that of Elizabeth Warren's be discussed. It is not possible to do this during rallies, and during debates with such poor structures. In order for people to become fully vested, we need to stop talking over our heads. People become pumped at rallies, but if they walk away not getting a full understanding of what they should fight for, they can be swayed by another politician's spin of the truth. And this is not only for the GND.

    Meagan Day is one of the best journalists out there. If she had "normal" (aka neoliberal) views, she would be a household name (rather than famous only among leftists). I just got back from the Bernie rally with Ilhan Omar and I feel so invigorated and ready to fight. All the love and compassion and empathy among the Bernie supporter crowd is just totally abnormal for American life and only we can spread it to the rest of the American people - fighting the hate and fear of that Trump has used for his political advantage. #Bernie2020 #BernieGotReceipts! #MeaganDay

    I was in high school when Michael Moore gave that speech. I had taken to antiwar activism not just against the Iraq War, but even prior to that opposing the Afghanistan War. My mom was always a progressive working class voice that encouraged me, but those were dark times. I remember the Orange Alerts, and it was no joke. My mom put duct tape around one of our doors at one point because some kind of alert had gone up saying we should. And I remember talking to my mom and saying, "This is crazy. If this does seal the air outside from us, it means we'll just suffocate from lack of oxygen instead." So that was the context. And his speaking up like that made me feel like I wasn't alone. Thank you, Michael Moore.

    Saving America is like trying to save a wounded animal. It might run away at first even bite you and hiss at you, it doesn't know what kindness is, and it's only been trying to survive, it clings to the things it knows and trusts and fears the unknown. But if it really realizes what you are trying to do and that you come with love, you'll save them.

    We have not all enjoyed the privilege of honest media coverage
    But we all do have shared strength. We give, and we vote, and we are many.

  • @patrickholt2270
    @patrickholt2270 5 лет назад +3

    The central explanation which I got from Jose Porphirio Miranda is that poverty originates with market transactions for profit. That profit on transactions, and interest and rent, constitutes a redistribution of income to the value of the profit, from one side to the other, and that thus the exact same processes through which some people get rich are the processes through which others get poor, or poorer, because market exchange, including exchange of labour for wages, rent for housing, interest for loans etc, continuously redistributes income from everyone else to the owners of wealth, and especially to the already rich. So it isn't just a rigged tax and public spending structure that lets the rich not pay their share and hands out massive contracts and subsidies to private corporations which has made most people poorer than their parents were at the same age, because the previous tax and spending regime only slowed down the process of redistribution from everyone else to the rich. So ultimately, you cannot eliminate poverty, and you cannot get big donor money out of politics, and you cannot ensure everyone gets all their constitutional rights which have been subverted and destroyed because they got in the way of corporate domination in one way or another, just by fipolitically against the hirelings and politcal agencies of and for the rich, but you have to socialise and democratise that wealth. Only when wealth is commonly owned and democratically controlled, not by the state but directly through co-ops, communes and local communities can you ensure that profits on transactions, which allow the wealth being created by everyone's labour and creativity and love to be gathered, are fairly shared so that it doesn't keep creating and worsening inequality. And this is the Biblical goal.
