You see, people who are scared of change are the ones who usually call other people names like commie. No logical defense other than name-calling and scare tactics. Sanders is proposing nothing more than what other countries are currently using and are performing better than America is doing. America needs to catch up. Don't believe me? Go try to take away those benefits from them and let's see how they act.

What a pleasure to listen to Barbara Smith. When I first saw her endorsement video, I was thrilled!!! I lived in Boston when she was there and she was in large part responsible for my consciousness raising during that time. It shaped my life, as it shaped many women's lives in Boston. It was great to hear someone who loves Bernie , because she really sees who he is. I speak with good people who have never had the life experience of heightened consciousness that Barbara represents, the environment in which I was immersed for decades in Boston, so they know nothing about what Bernie represents. Just last night I was explaining to a man (in Pennsylvania) who has every reason to welcome a Bernie presidency, who has avoided politics because "it divides people" and I did the best I could, but I couldn't tell what he thought. As I walked away, he said, "Religion!! THAT divides people, too." I told him about what Bernie has said about his experience of spirituality and about what he says to people about how we're all in this together and what makes us all more human. I'm going to watch this interview several times. Thank you so much.

      @Achrononmaster 4 года назад

Woman, not girl. Press Secretary is a propagandist, a vital role if they speak truth to power (to themselves). Brie would be great, but the real energy needs to be at the base, to organize pressure on Senators to vote to pass Bernie's legislation. Brie would be better at that, no? Bernie should create proper administrative positions for this work, it is a vital necessity to counter corporate lobbyists. If you want the legislation to pass, you must be patient and put maximum voter pressure during the first year before the next mid-terms, then spend all political capital you've got in the second mid-term. Invest now for the (political) profit next year. Then Bernie will then easily get a second term, and the sky's the limit to progressive reform/revolution after that.

Mass media does not report on people who challenge the status quo. She was an LGBT outreach organizer on Bernie's 2016 campaign, but since her work would take the moral high ground away from the liberals, she was erased from the narrative.

      @@Ellie-jw3mr U.S. House of Representatives
His 1990 victory was described by The Washington Post as being the “First Socialist Elected” to the United States House of Representatives in more than 40 years.
Served in the House from 1991 until the time he became a Senator in 2007. Over a span of 16 years, he continuously won re-election by large margins, with the only exception being 1994.
In his very first year in the House, he co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He led this group for its first eight years. Its primary devotion is to advance liberal causes and is currently the largest organization within the Democratic congressional caucus.
He sided with the minority in voting against the use of force against Iraq in 1991 and 2002. He also opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Voted against the Patriot Act despite the majority of Congress voting for it (357 to 66). He also sponsored several amendments trying to limit its effects, even getting a proposal passed through the House preventing the government from obtaining a record of the books people buy.
Was an open critic of Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan and took him head on insisting he only represented “large and wealthy corporations.” Greenspan later admitted to Congress that his economic ideology regarding risky mortgage loans was flawed.
He passed more amendments than any other member during his time in the House. It earned him the nickname “The Amendment King.” He did this despite being a “socialist” and Congress being controlled by Republicans from 1994 to 2006, in one of the most partisan right-wing Houses ever.
Passed an amendment to “require offenders who are convicted of fraud and other white collar crime to give appropriate notice to victims and other persons in cases where there are multiple victims eligible to receive restitution.”
Passed an amendment that improved Postsecondary Education. It administered a competitive grant program to institutions of higher education seeking to reduce costs through the purchase of goods and services. This saved colleges and taxpayers both money.
He amended the Treasury and General Government Appropriations Act of 2003, stopping the IRS from being able to use funds that “violate current pension age discrimination laws.”
He expanded free health care and won a $100 million increase in funding by using his amendment powers. This added community health centers that gave out a variety of free health care services.
Prevented child labor by passing an amendment to a general appropriations bill. This stated that the U.S. will not appropriate funds for the importation of goods made by the hands of minors.
Won a $22 million increase for low-income home energy assistance and a related weatherization assistance program. This helped heat homes for the poor.
Passed an amendment that formed a bipartisan coalition effectively prohibiting the Export-Import Bank from handing out loans for nuclear projects in China.
      U.S. Senate
Defeated a wealthy businessman, Rich Tarrant, to win his U.S. Senate seat in 2006, in one of the most expensive campaigns in Vermont’s history.
Received the distinction of being named the third-most popular senator in the country, according to Public Policy Polling in August 2011.
Given a score of 100 percent by the NAACP and NHLA (National Hispanic Leadership Agenda) based on his record during his time in the Senate.
Named one of the top 5 American Jews of the Forward 50 in 2015.
Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs in 2013-2014.
Became ranking minority member of the Senate Budget Committee in January 2015.
Became ranking minority member of the Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging.
Passed an amendment making sure that solar water heaters provide at least 30 percent of hot water for new federal buildings. This is forcing us to use green energy.
Made sure to it that bailout funds weren’t used to replace laid-off U.S. workers with exploited and poorly-paid foreign workers.
Helped ensure that child care was being offered to parents in the Armed Forces by requiring the Comptroller General to provide accurate reporting on what was being done.
Required a public database be made available showing the names of senior Department officials seeking employment with defense contractors. This helped crack down on corruption.
Required that the TRICARE program provide treatment to veterans affected by certain types of autism. It wasn’t previously being done.
Won a battle requiring the Government Accountability Office to conduct an audit of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (the part that doesn’t interfere with monetary policy). This revealed the names of the recipients of over 2,000,000,000,000 in taxpayer assistance.
Was praised by John McCain(R-AZ) and Sen. Jack Reed(D-RI) for overhauling the Veterans Administration. Was said to have done such an excellent job of bringing all parties to a deal, that it wouldn’t have gotten done without Sanders’ work.
But, most of all, what Bernie has done is inspire Americans. That’s what he’s doing in this election. His list of accomplishments doesn’t include all the times he’s stood on the Senate floor giving a passionate speech on why the “big banks need to be broken up.” No, you can’t quite quantify things like that.

      Veterans
Landmark legislation was passed in 2014 to help the Department of Veterans Affairs serve America’s aging population of veterans and to meet the needs of a new generation of men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. As the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairman, Sanders steered the bill through Congress. The legislation (H.R. 3230) passed the Senate 93-3 after passing the House 265-160 and was signed by President Obama on Aug. 7, 2014. The law included $5 billion for the VA to hire more doctors and other health care professionals. Sanders commitment to veterans has a long history. In 1998, he worked with Rep. Chris Shays to pass a bill to care for illnesses afflicting Gulf War veterans.
      The War in Iraq
Sanders voted against the Bush-Cheney war in Iraq. The House on Oct. 11, 2002, voted 293-133 for the resolution (H.J. Res. 1149) authorizing military force. The war, which dragged on for nine years, was one of the worst foreign policy fiascoes in modern American history and fomented the Islamic State terrorist group that plagues the Middle East today.
      The War in Afghanistan
Sanders was in the 420-1 House majority on Sept. 14, 2001, in voting for a resolution (H.J. RES 64) authorizing the use of force against the country which harbored those responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As the longest war in U.S. history dragged on, Sanders supported the withdrawal of U.S. troops, which finally ended combat operations in the country in 2014.
      The First Gulf War
Sanders voted against the resolution (H.J. RES 77) authorizing U.S. military action in the Persian Gulf War when it passed the House by a vote of 250-183 on Jan. 12, 1991.
      The USA Patriot Act
The post-9/11 law gave the National Security Agency broad new surveillance powers that the NSA abused to sweep up millions of email and telephone records without search warrants. “All of us want to protect the American people from terrorist attacks but in a way that does not undermine basic freedoms,” Sanders, a "no" vote, said on Oct. 24, 2001, when the surveillance law (H.R. 3162) first passed the House 357-66. He voted against renewing the law (S. 2271) on March 7, 2006, when reauthorization passed 280-138. In the Senate, he voted against extending the PATRIOT Act (S. 990) on May 26, 2011, when the extension passed 72-23.
      Wall Street Deregulation
Less than a decade before the 2008 Wall Street financial crisis that caused the Great Recession, Sanders voted against a bill (S. 900) that undid decades of financial regulations enacted after the Great Depression. Over Sanders’ opposition, the House passed the deregulation bill 362-57 on Nov. 4, 1999. “This legislation,” he had predicted, “will lead to fewer banks and financial service providers, increased charges and fees for individual consumers and small businesses, diminished credit for rural America and taxpayer exposure to potential losses should a financial conglomerate fail. It will lead to more mega-mergers, a small number of corporations dominating the financial service industry and further concentration of power in our country.”
      Big Banks
Sanders in 2013 proposed legislation to break up “too-big-to-fail” banks, which today have more assets and control more of the economy than before taxpayer bailed them out in 2008. Wall Street bankers have blocked the bill. The bankers lost a battle in 2009, however, when Sanders in 2009 reached across the aisle to work with Senator Charles Grassley to amend (S.A. 306) a bill to prevent banks that took taxpayer bailouts from replacing laid-off U.S. workers with lower-paid foreign workers.
Read the bill to break up big banks
      Read the Sanders-Grassley amendment
      Free Credit Reports
The House on November 2, 2003, passed legislation (H.R.2622) authored by Sanders (original bill) to provide all Americans with one free credit report per year. The bill became law (Public Law No: 108-159) on Dec. 4, 2003.
      Read the law
      Taxes
Tax breaks for the wealthy and profitable corporations were passed by Congress, over Sanders’ opposition, during the administration of President George W. Bush. The loss of revenue was a major reason that Bush amassed big deficits after inheriting a big budget surplus. Sanders voted against the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act when the House passed it (H.R. 1836) by a vote of 230-197 in 2001. He voted no when the House passed the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 (H.R. 2) by a vote of 222-203. When the tax breaks were set to expire in 2010, Sanders delivered an 8 ½ hour Senate floor speech against extending the tax cuts for the rich. The Senate, however, voted 81-19 (H.R. 4853) to keep the tax breaks in place. Finally, two years later, Sanders prevailed. On New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2013, he voted with the 90-8 Senate majority on (H.R. 8) to end the Bush tax breaks for the wealthiest 1 percent of American wage earners. Sanders has proposed a progressive tax package to close corporate loopholes and to help balance the budget by making the wealthy pay their fair share.
      Watch the filibuster
      Read the Sanders tax proposals
      The Fed
A first-ever audit of the Federal Reserve revealed eye-popping details of how $16 trillion in near zero-interest loans went to banks and businesses in the U.S. and abroad in the aftermath of the 2008 financial collapse. The audit (GAO-11-696) was required by a Sanders amendment to the 2010 Wall Street reform bill.
      Read the law
      Read the audit
      Trade Policy
As a result of a series of disastrous trade deals, nearly 60,000 American factories have been shuttered since 2001 and millions of good-paying jobs have shifted to low-wage nations overseas. The House voted 234-200 on Nov. 17, 1993, for the North American Free Trade Agreement (H.R. 3450). Sanders voted no. He later voted against the Central American Free Trade Agreement (H.R. 3045) when it was passed by the House on July 8, 2005, by a vote of 217-215. He also voted against establishing permanent normal trade relations with China when that resolution (H.R. 4444) was passed the House by a vote of 237-197 on May 24, 2000. He is now leading the fight against a 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement.

[This is not a criticism of this nice lady personally but a general note]. Identity politics is fostered by the ruling class to divide political opposition, divide the working class and keep us focussed on the culture war and never resisting them in the economic war they focus on. This is a favourite idea the wealthy elites, comfortable with the economic norms uses to co-opt opposition to the establishment so class consciousness never arises.

Stubbornly only running with politicians who look or otherwise are like you is a huge issue, and it keeps us divided and unable to band together and get things done. It's important to talk about identity politics in a general sense, but it becomes problematic when used as an attack against individuals. We've seen this used against Bernie with the sexist Bernie Bros narrative. Division and tribalism is our enemy, unity is our only hope.

    • @audie2064

@Wolfkiller Unity can not come at the price of appeasement. Too many times throughout history the exploited have been encouraged to put aside their particular concerns for the sake of unity. It is the time for whites to acknowledge the generational harm done onto brown and black people to their generational benefit. An apology would be a start to reconciliation.

Explains how the red state Midwest used to be radically for the people, calling this day’s “billionaire” class “Robber Barons” back then. Then used Public Relations (mindf*ck) to polarize the people against the coastal cities “degenerate culture”. I hear he’s got a good new book, som’n about small d’eifying the democratic party.

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion but I think it needs to be said. My issue with Identity Politics is that it is being used to justify the type of behavior that it complains about. In my opinion, if something is fair, it is fair for everyone. Making special rules for special groups of people is, generally speaking, just as bad as the original special rules that existed. I think it is perfectly fine to identify Identity Discrimination but the solution is to have politics that lifts all people and removes the original special rules that people previously abused.

If I need to cross an ocean but you need to cross a mountain should we both try and do it the same way? Would it be a special rule for you to use a plane or for me to use a boat? Oppression and struggle are not a competition, there are no rules to to ending it.

All of the addendums about identity politics do NOT help this video.
Yes, a nuanced & thorough discussion of systemic discrimination & understanding how identity can effect circumstance CAN be enlightening, but the stone cold FACT of the matter is successive advocates for intersectionality have made mockery of the core concepts.
Any leftist interested in solidarity should first and foremost clarify what that solidarity means. Corporate Democrats believe it means that leftists need to fall in line and allow them to dictate public policy and even rig primaries. The woke "identity politics" crowd often seem to believe it means anyone outside of specific protected classes should STFU and kiss the ring.
In reality, it is about UNDERSTANDING what might divide us (experience, culture, temperament) and placing emphasis instead on what UNITES us (universal human rights, economic justice and a wish for social welfare, in its basic meaning. Even DEEP conservatives often believe in these very things, they just ALSO believe in a very different perspective of what they might mean and how to achieve them)
Identity politics has been used as a weapon for at LEAST 50 years, slowly becoming more and more cynical and less and less *meaningful* or based in reality. It's time to either ditch it or start cleaning house.
To those celebrating "heightened consciousness" or such things, please leave the echochamber. Speaking like this loses elections. I for one hope the unhelpful communication doesn't turn people off to the powerful and righteous message, but unfortunately, it often does. Folks are fed up of bourgie liberals lecturing them about their privilege while they're experiencing poverty (because while "privilege" might aptly describe certain aspects, it is RARELY discussed with academic rigour and typically a thin veil for racism and contempt for the working class, especially if they're white. Sad but true)
My warnings on this get me labelled a "bernie bro" but if the REPEATED ass kickings the neoliberals "on the left" have taken cynically pushing "intersectionality" as an ALTERNATIVE to economic justice isn't evidence enough, we are TRULY fucked.

Briahna is awesome, but folks, please do not push her to become Press Secretary. Press Secretary is a propagandist, a vital role if they speak truth to power (to themselves). Bri would be great, but the real energy needs to be at the base, to organize pressure on Senators to vote to pass Bernie's legislation. Bri would be better at that, no? Bernie should create proper administrative positions for this work, it is a vital necessity to counter corporate lobbyists. If you want the legislation to pass, you must be patient and put maximum voter pressure during the first year before the next mid-terms, then spend all political capital you've got in the second mid-term. Invest now for the (political)
profit next year. Then Bernie will then easily get a second term, and the sky's the limit to progressive reform/revolution after that. Be relentlessly strategic. The planet depends upon us.

I respectfully disagree about identity politics. Instead of rising to a more enlightened way of thinking about all people, we need to stop this ignorant dividing and conquering based on, in the grand scheme of things, petty differences like ethnicity, gender, sexuality, politics, et al. While those elements to one’s identity is entirely unique, fulfilling, and empowering to you, it may not be the same for others you may disagree with. And that’s fine. What isn’t is espousing ignorance and supremacy of ideology. And while I disagree with Barbara Smith on this issue, I respect her as a person and will read Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around to get more of her viewpoints. Nobody should be bullied into believing what’s correct or moral and I believe Barbara Smith would respect my viewpoint. I really believe Bernie’s coalition of all people will not only win the nomination but will become the 46th President.

When you attack these problems you need to be cognizant of these differences so you know you are address it for all people. Now it is used to refer to the cynical politicians who use it to pander and for political gain. Let's not let them distract us from the original valid point being made. I agreed with you until I read Bernie's book where he filibustered One of the Wall Street bailouts on December 10th 2010. One of the people that joined his filibuster was a Senator from Louisiana. Ironically it was her statements that caused the light to come on. In that same filibuster, Senator Sanders could not understand why policies that continue to take money from the middle class and cause them to decline, while making millionaires and billionaires a storehouse of money, continues to be promoted by the Republican party. Then it hit me. Republicans are using and weaponizing the supply side economics argument, not because they believe that supply side economics works. They have been seeking to to cause deficit spending so that they can "Starve the beast" , which means cutting social programs like social security and Medicare.
