I am from the southern part of the state of Georgia and was used to being surrounded by gorgeous oaks draped with Spanish moss. When I was a about 6 my little sister and I were visiting my grandmother out in the country. There were huge oaks with the moss hanging all the way to the ground and my sister and I pulled swathes of it off the tree and wrapped it around us like fur stoles we saw ladies wear (it was the 50’s). My grandmother saw us and yelled out, “don’t do that, that stuff is full of red bugs!” Red bugs, or chiggers, are awful microscopic bugs that burrow in the skin and itch like crazy, and in its natural habitat can indeed inhabit the moss. We immediately tossed it. But I have lived in the Seattle area, which I love, since 1996, and really missed Spanish moss, until just a couple of weeks ago when I was in a local nursery picking up a few plants, and lo and behold, Spanish moss was being sold in small swags for about $12! I snatched it up and took it home to hang down the side of my plant stand by the sliding door to my second floor balcony which is nearly always open. I love to watch it sway gently in the breeze and remember those gorgeous giant oaks draped with it.
That stuff grows in Florida like a weed!! Literally every tree has tons and tons dangling everywhere. That's crazy how expensive they try to sell it in other areas.
I recently purchased some Spanish moss from the Drunken Gnome Air Plant Supply Company and of course I have placed a paper clip on the piece of wire that is plastic coated in order to hang it easier 🤦🏼♀️ Perhaps if I’d spent more time on their site I would have learned about not using metal… Fortunately, I’m watching your video to gain some insight. This is the first video of yours I’ve watched and it’s very informative. Thank you. BTW, I’m very happy with my purchase of air plants and I will watch more of your videos as I’m guessing you cover them too 🙂
Hi Brad. I really appreciate this video. I've had Spanish Moss for 5 years. It is about 5 foot long and I have it draped over a cross that I made out of driftwood. It hangs on my patio and I live in Florida. I mist it daily and run the hose over it too. I bought it at a farmers market and It was $5. I live in South Florida so it does not grow on trees like it does in North Florida. I had never thought of making more bundles of it so I will now! Thank you so much!
I love the look of good old southern moss. I live in Bradenton, FL and it grows everywhere here. I just pulled down as much as I needed and added it to my plants. I had no idea they sold it.
wow never thought I would see somebody actually growing moss in a green house. Kinda cool though. I also live in Florida and my trees are completely covered dragging the ground with it. I love it. Nothing compares to the beauty of an oak tree with spanish moss blowing in the wind. It does get very heavy though when it rains and puts much weight on some limbs. I also make fences with the moss that falls on the ground which is constantly. Thanks for the video !
Hi Tracy, if you you any excess Spanish moss, or from areas where you think it's becoming too cumbersome in certain areas, I'd be glad to take some off your hands, shipping included. :)
@@jamesvalentine2103 i live near trees that have a bunch and I see Tracy hasn't responded if you want id be glad to send you some if you still where looking for some
Thanks for all that great info. My lil bit of moss, just acquired today from Edinburgh Botanical gardens , now has a better chance of thriving. Cold Scotland can make life tricky for my plant gang. Big smile and best wishes, Tish.
i got this moss from my uncles place in Florida, back home to India. And i guess it was struggling a little as it was in sun but surly now i know what it needs so will bring it back to life. Thanks for sharing the tips .
I just got some and I'm beyond psyched. I'm gonna propagate the everliving hell outta it! Such a weird plant that easily adds so much natural feel to any living spaces.
Wow. never realized how much Spanish moss we have here in South Texas. Till this video. Here it grows on trees and hangs over 2 or 3 ft long. It's even on my window and window frame and on the house. But not as long. Looks cool to me so I leave it be.
I bought a fairly large clump that hangs about 3.5 feet at Home Depot in San Diego for $10 Great info you provided. I'll start taking clippings to expand my collection.
Thank you so much Brad!!! I just got some of this to help me nurse a sick cattleya from another species grower and I wanted to be able to keep it alive even after I use it to save the sick plant. He says it has tiny fragrant blooms in the spring!
I live in Houston and saw it growing on a square metal fence that surrounds a public swimming pool. I had never seen in on a fence until yesterday. That's what prompted my search.
Thanks for the video on the Spanish moss Brad - I wish I would've pick some up at the orchid show, I saw it for five dollars for a very nice size bundle. Not sure if you seen my Facebook post but my greenhouse is finished I moved my plants in last night and oh my god what a difference in temperature I hope I don't have anything die. Going to order my mist maker tomorrow, have my fish tank already in there with water, just overwhelmed with everything that I need to do now.
THANK YOU FOR THIS. I GREW UP WITH SPANISH MOSS EVERYWHERE IN KEY BISCAYNE, CORAL GABLES AND MIAMI. I NOW LIVE IN A VALLEY OF VERY OLD VOLCANOES HERE IN HAWAII, 3,000 FT. UP. Hi Brad, thank you for the video on Spanish moss! I mistakenly purchased a bag of dry Spanish moss thinking it was Sphagnum moss, but I'm trying to make a use of it. Is it already dead and no longer growing if it's sold in a bag? How do you think I can use this dry Spanish moss for my indoor plants?
Perfect plant for my bathroom. It's usually humid as a result of taking a shower every morning and has one frosted glass window so I don't have to worry about direct sunlight.
Hey does it grow well in your bathroom? I just bought mine but I am worried it isn't humid enough does yours do fine in the bathroom? Mine is also in my bathroom
Hey my bathroom is not one bit sunny really! it has those glazed over windows that you can't see through and light is there mostly end of the day - it loved it! I don't think I would trust it being in our sun as we have harsh sun here! I will do a video shortly about mine on my channel thekimmyconnection if you want to sub there I just started and will show you all about mine!
I have a clump of ball moss (Tilandsia recurvata) on a twig that I got in Texas. I was growing it outside, but then I moved back to Missouri so it had to come in. It seems to be doing very well. Your Spanish moss look great. :D Love you videos.
Lucky here in Perth W.A. as my air plants are all outside in up to 40 d celcius and get a spray every second day, and ive gone from 5 plants 5 years ago to over a hundred of them. I pull them apart then use a thick rubber band to tie them then make a plastic coated hook to tie them onto baskets, orchids, tree branches , draped over my many tillasandias as a sun barrier, and love them so much. They also look good with bromeliads, that ive tied onto totem poles . I couldnt dunk them ad I have far too many. I spray hydroponic fertaliser on them 3- 4 times a year, well diluted. Where are you situated in the world? I love the orchid hooks, I have them on my dendrobiums, so migjt try them on the moss. Great video, thanks for sharing.
I picked up a good size bunch of Spanish moss back around 1995 from the Okefenokee swamp. It has grown and multiplied tenfold over the past several decades. I do not pamper or baby my Spanish moss. It grows well on an east-facing closed in porch in Northern Ohio quite well. As soon as the last chance of frost has passed, all of the Spanish moss specimens are hung outside from the limbs of the 85 to 90 year old Japanese maple in my front yard. I too use the dunking method for watering when it is in the greenhouse. Outside, if it doesn't rain it gets a spritz with the garden hose whenever it gets especially dry. On occasion a very dilute of 20-20-20 fertilizer is in the dunk bucket. In mid to late autumn when the chance of frost becomes likely, it is transferred back into its winter abode. While growing outside it is at the whim of Mother Nature for humidity, inside humidity is usually maintained between 65 and 75%.
You helped me A LOT !! I have spanish moss for about 5 months at least and it hasnt grown yet ... I propably water it not enough ... I have it hanging at my window .. Propably habe to dunk it once a day from now on
Great video! I've kept a small clump of Spanish moss for three years now...indoors in Colorado without a greenhouse. I can keep it somewhat "tangled" as it seems to do well sitting loosely connected atop my phalanopsis orchid pots and I don't pay much attention to which side is up. Just make sure it has adequate air flow. The main thing though, is that it gets strong yet filtered south/west light, and I mist it daily with rain/snow water and additionally make sure it gets a thorough 1-2 hour soak (sometimes even overnight!) in a bucket once a week if it needs it. If it keeps making more of itself I may have to employ your clip trick! Thanks for the metal info; I'd no idea this was a problem. Best, L.
Thanks for the tips. I'll try these wd my Spanish which has not grown much and it's been a year now since it was given by my sister . I rarely water it i guess that's why it hasn't grown much and no permanent location .
I have hundreds of tillandsia usinoidies , ( old mans beards) , and use a fine water sprayer with diluted liquid fertiliser in it about 3 times a week. All hanging on bromeliads and other air plants. From Perth West Australia.
Can I ask, if the spanish moss has turn brown due to the metal it's exposed to and grew from, should i cut it off or should i jsut continue to stay as one piece?
I'd try moving it away from metal and if it's possible to cit off the brown, do so. But, that's just a guess..probably either way works as long as remove from metal. Good luck!
Thanks for the great vid! I never knew about the metal thing. I bought 10LBs on line. I also bought a "Flowmaster" -one of those things use to apply pesticides etc. and I use that instead of a spray bottle.
How long do you soak it i water for? Can't really find any sites that mentioned the time. Also what about tillandsian? They are always in pair. Do I soak it in the same time as well?
Thank you..this was very helpful...I just purchased Spanish moss and was going to hang on my metal plant shelves..looks like I need to find another spot lol
I have had my Spanish moss on an upturned steel basket made with chicken wire and it grows like wildfire. Are there different breeds of Spanish moss? I am in Australia and your advice is exactly spot on for our changing conditions also. Mine also gets yellow flowers on it too.
Thank you for a your informative and easy to watch video. I don’t have Spanish moss, but a similar plant Usnea filipendula. I haven’t been lucky in finding care information on my plant. I’m going to implement your advice, hopefully I do a good job.
Ive heard that spanish moss is cross with metal however, about a year ago I saw a large large spanish moss growing healthy on a metal mesh that was meant for a climber plant.
Do you have to worry spider mites on the moss when growing indoors? I was thinking of adding some to my large foxtail palm I have growing in my home but the palm tree is a constant battle with spider mites. I frequently mist it with a mild solution of water and dawn dish soap which keeps the mites in check.
I have some bright LED tube lights (look like florescent bulbs) that hang from the ceiling that my plants grow under. Bought a couple sections of Spanish Moss and am planning to use plastic S hooks to hang the moss from either end of the lights to hide the cords and make the corner look more plantish
Thank you so much for this! Your video was simple and informative! Can I ask, do you ever grow your phaelonopsis orchids with the roots upwards and the flowers hanging down as they grow in the wild? I was thinking of making a display of mine on a large moss covered branch and let them grow as they like that and wondered if it would be successful? I live in the uk so it is a cooler climate , but they seem to grow well for me.
You inspired me to purchase some Spanish Moss. Your video is very informative but I'm not sure about fertizing it. Can you please let me know if you do fertilize and if so how often and what type. Thanks
😂a hair clip! I was literally thinking that would be a great Halloween costume right before you made that suggestion ! #greatmindsthinkalike thanks for sharing these tips!
How often do you water your plants ? I just got some and I’m trying to grow it indoors in a south facing glassdoor. House temperature is around 69-76 degrees and I just ordered a humidity reader to get an idea how dry it is. Thank you for your video.
This is 2 years later so not sure if relevant. I'm in Los Angeles and my SM is inside. I immerse it once a week (in winter) for an hour. In summer, I immerse it twice a week.
@@lcdee5982 Whenever is relevant to me ! That’s great - i’ve had my spanish moss now for like 2ish years I think? I water it about 1x a week but i also go a few weeks without watering then do a longer watering. They’re still alive. Haven’t gotten any flowers yet but they grew a lot. They’re about 3ft long. I got 2 bunches that were separate and then combined them.
Great tips. I think I now know where I've gone wrong with this in the past, so I'll give it another try when I can find some at a sensible price (it's not cheap in the UK either). Thank you.
I live in Louisiana and moss is everywhere. I don't have any in my trees but I have neighbors with cypress trees with plenty of moss . Last night we had a storm and I saw some down on the ground in the street and picked it up. I'd love to keep it inside growing with my orchids. my problem is how do I know which is the top and bottom so it will live and grow. Is there any way to look at moss and know? If not, I'll just throw it back outside. Thanks!
Janice Upton that's my predicament! I just bought some and went through it all. I carefully untangled it. Dunked it to water it well and then I realized that I didn't know which end is up! I hope I got it right! It's awfully pretty to let die.
Tillandsia is the family air layer plants and are cousins to orchids and bramiliads they like high humidity alot of them do so mist and water every day with the smaller leaf ones
Janice Upton I'm in New Orleans, and we have so much Spanish moss, it's not even funny! I can't figure out how to get it without insects, because that's the last thing I need!
Your arrangement is beautiful. We just had Matthew go through and a lot of limbs came down with air plants on them. Some really big and some small. I see where it talks about submerging the plants couple of times a week as misting them did not give enough water. If you make an arrangement like you did and hot glue it to driftwood then how do you water them.
Here is Australia Spanish Moss is known as Old Man's Beard or Whiskers. Probably the most well known and popular is Spanish moss Tillandsia usneoides or Old Man's Beard. It's from the Everglades, the southern part of Florida and Louisiana. They hang from trees but can grow to a couple of metres long. In the olden days they were used as stuffing for mattresses.
I'm from India and it is a bit extra hot this summer ! As I'm out on work, I've immersed just a few inches of length of Spanish Moss in my aquarium since about a week and left most of it (around eight inches in dia and over two foot in length) trailing out of water over extra long driftwood. Looks nice. The immersed part of the moss is turning a light green, looks healthy though..is it a good / bad thing ?
Thank you so much for the tips and info! This video was very chill and relaxing to watch 😄. I had a chunk of spanish moss that is tied to a sea coconut ❤ Mine has graying parts of the moss, but now I know how to deal with it! I thought it has to do with the lighting, but since most of them are green, it must be cause by the humidity.. Thanks a bunch this is really helpful

Yeah, Alabama too! Grows on every tree I see.
I remember my first trip to Florida, I asked my uncle why the trees were so hairy.

And they don’t seem to grow!

I also bought a "Flowmaster" -one of those things use to apply pesticides etc. and I use that instead of a spray bottle.
cool, Happy to share what I can!
How long do you soak it i water for? Can't really find any sites that mentioned the time. Also what about tillandsian? They are always in pair. Do I soak it in the same time as well?
I'm in Los Angeles and mine are inside. I soak for an hour once a week in winter and twice a week in summer. I hope this helps. 😀
Spanish earrings! haha great video thanks Brad
You said to lay it in the same direction. How do we know which side is up and down? Mine came in a ball and every side looks the same :/
thanks for your tips...
i am hoping to have some bunch soon...
from Philippines!
Very informative thank you
I picked a piece off a tree at a park today. The moss is everywhere. I put it on my vanda in hopes that it’ll grow.
Thank you for a your informative and easy to watch video. I don’t have Spanish moss, but a similar plant Usnea filipendula. I haven’t been lucky in finding care information on my plant. I’m going to implement your advice, hopefully I do a good job.
Hello. Im from Indonesia, i just bought this plant. We call it "Jenggot Musa". Im trying to tend it in my home. Nice information. Thank you
very informative! thank you!
so wonderful to see your many healthy happy plants
Thanks Digging this!
Hi, thanks for the video, I would like to know. With the necessary care, how much does it grow and in how much time?
Thanks for the nice video. You forgot to tell us how often we should do the dunk watering. Thank you.
omg i never knew they are so expensive. i just got them for free from my friend and we're not even in America. we're in Indonesia!
@ Brands Greenhouse & Gardening. That was very funny when you clipped the moss on your ear.
Hi. Great tips. Learnt a lot. Just wondering if twine would work to hang the moss?
Hey, if you get a Spanish Moss and lay it horizontally, will it grow down or sideways?
Ive heard that spanish moss is cross with metal however, about a year ago I saw a large large spanish moss growing healthy on a metal mesh that was meant for a climber plant.
Nice collection & thanks for the tips 👏🌱
Do you have to worry spider mites on the moss when growing indoors? I was thinking of adding some to my large foxtail palm I have growing in my home but the palm tree is a constant battle with spider mites. I frequently mist it with a mild solution of water and dawn dish soap which keeps the mites in check.
I have some bright LED tube lights (look like florescent bulbs) that hang from the ceiling that my plants grow under. Bought a couple sections of Spanish Moss and am planning to use plastic S hooks to hang the moss from either end of the lights to hide the cords and make the corner look more plantish
Thanks for this video.. it's very helpful.. I get confused how to care and culture this..
Will this be a good idea to use tap water on your moss if the water is 500 ppm or so? I use RO water because my tap water is too hard.
Thanks
Wonderful tips thank you!
Hey that makes great earrings! Maybe a hair clip for an up bun. Great ideas👍🏻
Thanks for the info 👍
Great tips. I think I now know where I've gone wrong with this in the past, so I'll give it another try when I can find some at a sensible price (it's not cheap in the UK either). Thank you.
Can you super glue them to branches? I'm building a vivarium and I wanna do a swampy tree look.
Thanks!
I'd have to see it to tell you im afraid...
I never knew this about miss 🦎🌻🌻🌻
I've been doing everything wrong! Thank you for the tips.
Haha, thats the stuff Tillandsia usneoides Yes, I read that when I was figuring out how to grow it in the greenhouse.
