I have the adaptor on the Z8. With the most recent firmware the autofocus is noticeably quicker, less erratic. The 16-35 gmII and 24-70 gmII & 100-400 gm work great on the Z8. I also find the Z8 is an incredible video camera, so I am pulling over Sony glass to create video on the Nikon. Kinda cool. I use my Sony less for video nowadays and with the new Nikon Red Luts now available my Sony will probably be relegated to stills.
Such an adapter is not just a spacer, but also contains a processor with software whose job it is to translate the camera's commands into the "language" of the lens. The transmission protocol is manufacturer-specific and most likely not publicly documented. As a developer, you have to determine the control commands for the lenses using reverse engineering, which is of course difficult and prone to errors. These limitations and "misunderstandings" between the camera and the lens result in lower AF performance.
