The engineers who designed that fifth wheel connection must be very proud, it’s one thing for the truck, not to get loose, but it’s a miracle the pin didn’t shear of the trailer.
@@imd1b4u A semi trailer king pin is 3” diameter at the connection point, it would take in excess of 350,000 pounds to shear the pin. An entire semi truck and trailer with 5 axles can gross about 80,000 pounds.
I have been driving Semis for over 20 years and I have seen many recoveries and the men that run these tow trucks are very skilled at what they do because one mistake can make things 10 times worse than they already are!!
Thanks for pointing that out. To be honest, I never gave it much thought and have only thought of tow truck operations as simply hooking up to a car that broke down. But yeah, there are some incredible accidents out there and these operators probably have all kinds of different messes to figure out how to haul off. I have newfound respect for these tow truck operators! Recovering that semi safely using multiple vehicles was a complex operation and had to take a lot of knowledge, experience, and courage.
Two rescues actually: the crew that got the driver out alive and to her family and the crew who salvaged the rig and allowed a major bridge to go back to the people! Great work! 🎉👍🏻👏

They did an amazing job. I watched on the internet the whole time. It was slow and tedious, kind of boring from my standpoint, (not from theirs, I'm sure) but it was fascinating to see their skill and talent. Great job to everyone involved in the rescue of the driver, and the recovery of the truck.
Props to this team! Running wreckers is a rough job, did it part time for 10 years. When the phone rings you just go, no matter the weather, road conditions, time, etc. They don't get enough credit 👏
To call them tow truck operator is the understatement of the decade. You have to have a intimate knowledge of PHYSIC to pull this off. They have to assess the situation then decide which laws applied. The weight of the truck the structure of the trailer and on and on He talked of inertia. We don’t give these guys enough credit
They did a great job, but I doubt these guys ever even took a physics course ever…not taking anything away from them. Their two heavy wreckers each outweighed the shorty semi truck and trailer which carried lightweight food products. Spreading the load between two of these wreckers would give them all the advantage they needed, and they knew that.
@tylermacconnell217 you must only have a class room education, you have no ideal what your talking about, these men are highly trained operators, they have to know load ratings at all angles of the booms on those trucks, the weight ratio of the rigging used to lift that semi, the points of connection to balance the load, plus, work in synchronization with each other, one gets ahead of the other and it shifts the load to the other machine, so, long story short, you have no ideal what these men know
@@garyparr5431 i totally agree with you , I was an Ironworker for 30 years , you couldn’t just set a crane up and not watch the position of the boom and also not making sure both cranes were lifting up at the same time because of the weight of the load. . Just like you said they have to know how the weight ranges their rigging , wire ropes , ( we called them chokers ) , shackles hooks and nylon straps , can take before breaking. Besides knowing what to look for in their rigging before they start the job to make sure it’s not too worn from a previous job. They have to take into account of the bracing of the bridge to work around it and not hit it with the boom of the cranes . They have to know where to hook up the rigging on the truck and or trailer depending on which one they are making the pick on . No these guys know what they’re doing and did a great job.

No one seems to be talking about the pick up truck that caused the multi car accident. Reckless speeding pick up truck swerving through lanes and smashing head on into the semi.

You just know the king pin and fifth wheel manufacturers are ready to make this a promotional video. An amazing combination of good engineering design and incredible skill by all involved to keep the equipment in place and retrieve it 'all together'.
If they didn't, it would be the biggest missed opportunity in marketing history. ALTHOUGH, I would expect them to delay for a safe period of time in order to fully assess overall public perception and opinion. Be wary of negative associations.
ALSO, the actual brand name manufacturers of the fifth-wheel and king-pin would have difficulty in claiming "PRODUCT DIFFERENTIATION" since the product space and specifications are governed but UNIVERSALLY-IMPOSED INDUSTRY-WIDE construction and use regulations.
