Loved getting to hear you think through the card choices while deck building, and a fantastic video as always even apart from that. I always enjoy your content!
Hey, Reid! Thanks for posting this! My close friends and I have so much fun playing Singleton decks because of all the variety in games and discovery of hidden synergies. It's why I built a cube, even. Sure, a Dredger will still have their way with you, but in the end these decks are genuinely more fun than stressing to keep up with the crazy optimized decks at an LGS.
Love the video Reid, I have been testing some Sultai lists, got some good results, but nothing special yet, would love to see more videos! Please make videos all the time :D
I already thought about that practice to build a deck but I never knew a pro player would already being doing it to train and see the strengths and balance the cards for new deck. Nice
A proper configuration of Snapcaster and Jace is good enough to be the only blue cards in the main board. I thought those were the strongest blue cards in the deck. Great video. I’ve gotten so much better at the game reading and watching your content!
Reid you did amazing work with Sultai. I loved watching the video. If I may share some feedback, the highlander deck looks like a hybrid between control and midrange in its current incarnation. I would try to move the deck to either midrange or full control to figure out the creature base in particular, since Vendillion Clique and JVP are very control oriented cards. If you decide to go midrange i would suggest putting the counterspells in the sideboard since it does blindside some oppenents game 2 to see countermagic from a previously 0 countermagic deck and counter magic is very matchup oriented.
Awesome video. I myself work on a Sultai Delirium Deck and sadly have limited budget. So I use things like nyx weaver for self mill. Hope to see more of that deck
And birds. I assume that Reid Duke, being a powerful planeswalker, records all his CFB content from his home on a scenic riverbank in Llorwyn where it's eternally sunset on a mild spring evening.
4th round was incredible, I wish there were more matchups like this were decision making is more important than having the nut draw in the opening hand :/
More than the need of specific cards I found you wanted creatures more often, because you tend to go into topdecking a lot. I'd play 11 or 12 (including a couple of snapcasters)
Ive been playing sultai highlander for 4 years now in modern and its quite fun. your biggest advantage is your opponents not knowIng what yoU could be on. cyclinf architects of will with flayer swinginf is sweeet
@@zackestin1368 I play a deck nothing like this, its way sillier actually, i have ishkana, etc. But highlander fnm has always been around for those seeking a thrill, and how you build amd play your deck matters. For example rule #1 is dont be a worse version of an existing deck, thats why a lot of peple go sultai, cuz there arent really sultai decks in modern
In game 1 against dredge on your last turn you could've trophied the land precombat to prevent the darkblast play. Not sure if that would've saved you, but it was an option.
I still don't understand why you wouldn't turn one Thoughtseize in Round 3. If they thoughtseize/inquisition you back you just lost a valuable tool to know their hand and remove a threat.
Because getting tar pit out of the way is massively relevant, and rarely seize on 2 can be better than on 1 because you see 1 more card. It's a bad choice if opponent has aether vial or Inquisition/seize or is stuck on lands with a serum visions, but can be good otherwise.
About to watch Match #5. So far I've found Jace, Vryn's Prodigy to be worse than Reef Shaman in this deck. EDIT: Yep. It really didn't do anything for you. Too easy to remove in most matchups I think?
I know you want to do singleton for testing but rain of tears instead of fulminator is basically just strictly worse, might as well have played a different card or a second fulminator if you really wanted an extra stone rain
I've honestly been brewing a list for BUG Control (not a midrange, ACTUAL hard control) without any creatures aside from Snapcaster Mages. It's been a fun road, and I'm looking for a little more oomph for the deck. tappedout.net/mtg-decks/15-10-18-bug-control/
Ried you need to sleep. Searching for underground sea in modern, not thinking through steps all the way, and I dont remember seeing Liliana of the veil. What are you trying to do with the deck, cause the colors makes me want to make sultai Deaths shadow again, with traverse the uvenwald, Tarmogofys, and goodstuffs.
he talked about his reasons for doing that he wants to take the game seriously still, and is going to break the highlander "testing" rule for good cards and a good mana base.
I guess this is somewhat entertaining but I don’t think this carries any helpful information about the cards he’s testing or the games that he’s playing because he doesn’t have a real configuration to test. This was neat but unfortunately if you came for competitive play or real testing then I think this configuration falls flat.
Reid with the ultimate anti meddling mage meta deck
tired of Humans supressing Jund
I am a simple man. I see Reid Duke, I drop everything, watch, and like it.
Reid keeps finding new ways to make me feel like I did as an eight-year old the night before Christmas.
Ethryas
He keeps finding ways to make me feel like a real woman
Like a virgin?
I was sweating watching you sideboard for the first time this video.
When u see caleb scherer fight jank sultai on stream only to realize that it was Reid Duke playing highlander
got a link?
Am i the only one that enjoys the crickets and frogs from the background when reid plays?
It could be enjoyable to watch a series on you editing and testing the various iterations of this deck as you tune it
This is an underrated comment should have 100 likes easy

What is this?
Tradebinder Sultai is evolving?!?
The Gerard Fabiano special, "Sultai cards I own."
Sultai cards shoebox
hahahaha
Always happy to see a Reid Duke video, and if I'm not mistaken the audio quality of Reid's mic has been improved a lot since previous videos!

There is nothing like jumping on youtube to find my favorite magic player posted a new modern video.
I already thought about that practice to build a deck but I never knew a pro player would already being doing it to train and see the strengths and balance the cards for new deck. Nice

Creeping Tar Pit is the absolute unit. That, Snapcaster, and Serum Visions make blue worth it over red. More of this!
...and J:tMS, of course.
"Now this is Magic" Could not agree more. Keep up the good work!
I love this kind of explaining for building a new deck
Thanks for being an informative streamer Reid!
Big fan.
I'll always stay with you, Reid!
Great video as always. I think it's pretty telling that the "disappointing" cards were pretty much all the blue ones.
There should be more decks like this one in magic competitive. Creative, fun, skill intensive but still strong and competitive. Good work Reid.

Thanks for the quality content Reid :)
Would love to see a fully built sultai deck. Love the idea of highlander for testing too. All around great video by the god himself.
Round 4 Game 1 - We learn that Jace the Mindsculpter is a pretty good card.
Been brewing sultai for a while, and would love to hear more of your take on the archetype.
This is the most Gerard Fabiano deck I've seen.
"I hope you'll stay with me."
We're with you Reid, till the end of the line!
2 hours of Reid? Yes please
Reid, your content is absolutely unmissable. I love everything you do. You've got to work out that mic thunk though, it is really brutal.
Liked the format of experiment
Am I hearing crickets in the background?
And birds. I assume that Reid Duke, being a powerful planeswalker, records all his CFB content from his home on a scenic riverbank in Llorwyn where it's eternally sunset on a mild spring evening.
After listing the to MTGoldfish podcast and hearing from Reid I know am more interested in seeing his love for GB decks.
And that’s how it goes my day of work!
i swear, reid can make any deck work. lol
Very cool, I never knew a highlander deck was a thing
I am a simple man. I see Reid playing midrange against Caleb's gift storm, I like it.
Been waiting for Reid to play with Ass trophy, yess!
4th round was incredible, I wish there were more matchups like this were decision making is more important than having the nut draw in the opening hand :/
HELL YES A REID DUKE VIDEO
Holy one-ofs, Batman! This seems interesting.
wouldn't it have been a good move to leave the traverse on top at 19:00 so you could traverse for snap and pulse the narcomebas?
rapajara my thoughts too. But he still would have got got by the darkblast
More than the need of specific cards I found you wanted creatures more often, because you tend to go into topdecking a lot. I'd play 11 or 12 (including a couple of snapcasters)

Why are you pretending this is an actual deck and not Reid literally testing cards to see how they match up against recent modern decks?

In the first much, traverse on top with serum visions, for snapcaster pulse?
>Reid
yes
>Midrange
YES
>Sultai

Man, new Dredge is so damn dirty. Creeping Chill doesn't feel the least bit fair.
love the video. can you go more like it?
Sultai shell with all in on traverse package seems to be the best rout
I’d love to see you develop this deck more.
It's pretty obvious that Sultai is a dead end. All the blue cards are bad, except for Jace, but that's not worth the color investment.
In game 1 against dredge on your last turn you could've trophied the land precombat to prevent the darkblast play. Not sure if that would've saved you, but it was an option.
woohoo Reid content
Love your content. You prob should get your mic up a bit, like on a stand or something because the keypunches and such really comes trough atm.
Took me a second to realize that Caleb Scherer was the Storm player.

where does the name "Highlander" origin from?
From the Highlander TV and movie series. There's a line that gets repeated a lot in that show: "There can be only one."
@@t.e.3535 Ah i know the movies and made the connection to them, but didnt figure out why. Thanks
Its Reid! Yay!
No Jund! Meh!
Its still the mastermind Reid! Yay!
I mean this is basically damp jund
Reid, i think that after this video you have a mission.. to make BUG (or sultai) competitive.. without being Fabiano.. love you btw
Christmas stuff is up already? It's not even Halloween yet.
About to watch Match #5. So far I've found Jace, Vryn's Prodigy to be worse than Reef Shaman in this deck.
EDIT: Yep. It really didn't do anything for you. Too easy to remove in most matchups I think?
Oh wow you played Caleb Scherer in round 2.Also you shouldn't expect more than 2 counters, that's the maximum the Storm lists play these days.
God I hate this new dredge build. Seems awful to play against.
Dredge was a mistake. The people who play it, they sicken me deeply.
I've never understood why people consider Ashiok a modern playable card, and match 5 in this video did not help me with that at all.
*catches notice of Reid Duke video*......*ANTICIpAtioN INTensiFIES*
I know you want to do singleton for testing but rain of tears instead of fulminator is basically just strictly worse, might as well have played a different card or a second fulminator if you really wanted an extra stone rain
David Yang it’s not strictly worse in BUG bc you have access to snap and JVP

Why do you even want blue? I don’t see any strong pay offs..
great video, but please put a lowcut filter on the audio next time
You TEASE!
THIS ISN'T ASSASSIN'S TROPHY JUND REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
"The Storm player." Smh Reid disrespecting daddy Caleb's name
round 2 opponent is caleb scherer
Bitterblossom is much better than Nihil Spellbomb against Humans, you don't have time for two mana can trips
Tried this myself, card selection is key but you can steal games
around 36:00 - "too much Legacy lately." NO SUCH THING.
2 swamps?!?!?!
Should have the snow swamp for value
19:08 you could traverse for Snapcaster and Maelstrom Pulse the Narcomoebas
Is it me? Or channel fireball is nudging draft videos?
BTW, thanks for the video Reid
