The year is 2024 and I still go back and watch this masterclass of BGx magic by The Duke.
I miss when modern was like this. Magic changed so much in the last couple of years
First game is a master class in midrange and how to force chump blocks from an aggro list. Hao is forced to throw away cards when I would have sat back and lost this game easily as the BG Midrange player.
This video should be called “how to magic” ft. Reid Duke.
Charles Herman facts
Reid Duke is the man! Watching that game, there is no doubt why he is ranked one of the two best players in the world.
Mulldrifter Z hao done many mistakes you mean... He hesitates a lot as a player.. Overthinking too much
Mulldrifter Z u mean game 2
Yes, that is how you play magic: When your opponent forgets to put a +1/+1 counter on theis creature you remind them. A win is only worth something if it's fair.
this should be the top comment.
it is. :)
Reid is a master both in skill and sportsmanship. We are lucky to have someone like him in the game.
Game 1 here is an absolute masterclass in how to win from behind.
heard a reference to this match ((I believe) on goldfish podcast where they were talking about how well duke played abzan vs humans so i had to check it out! Little while back Duke published a league video with abzan and it looked like the deck is highly skill intensive so its sweet to see this deck do so well in post- fatal push meta.
Reid really played circles around his opponent. His skill level with these types of decks is truly unmatched.
that game was was insane.
This feels like it was a lifetime ago
I want to be Reid Duke when I grow up.
I wish everyone (me included) was like Reid Duke
Modern is looking pretty healthy here. Good diversity at those tables.
Then Wizards decided to print dumb OP stuff in Modern Horizons to ruin the format.
Makes GBx decks look unbeatable
ried duke makes it look so easy
This once again proves how disastrously broken Tarmogoyf, Liliana of the Veil, Dark Confidant are in Modern, and their insane price tags show it.
Midnite Reveries I think modern is healthy, busted cards are fine when there is such a variety of ways to play them. This pro tour proved the health of the format
Tarmogoyf is one of the most fair cards in modern, and Liliana of the Veil and Dark Confidant are very good but not broken. Their insane price tag has more to do with limited supply than with brokenness.
Adam Nelson I agree, what I’m saying is the format is full of really powerful cards, so much so that tarmogoyf is contextually a fair card
Reminiscing 5 years later. This was peak modern. Midrange masterclass.
Excellent gameplay by Duke!
Cheon is good at commentating.
i absolutly LOOOOVE modern and magic. - god damn ! :)
I say God damn!!
That g1 is literally the best example of how to actually win a game from behind. Attacking eith the giyf is something most people wouldn't do and I think thats excellent.
I'm a total noob, I had no idea why Duke was attacking so much in the first game but he had it down
to force opponent blocking and steal the deal!!! because if he didn't that he should have died by the mantis rider in a few turns
What a match! Well played by both contestants!
Reid Duke been pumping some iron.
good guy Reid Duke
That’s why Big Dawg Reid Duke is the big dawg!!
This sounds weird, but how do they solve the problem of different languages? Wouldn’t each nationality have different languaged cards?
I think I have seen players ask judges for an English or other language translation of the cards. There is a match with Steve Rubin from Worlds 2016 I think where it happened.
Hammer Smash If you do not know what a card in a different language does, you can ask a judge for an Oracle text.
Don't nuke'em, Duke'em!
That game 1!!
This feel somewhat like a low-power level pioneer game, the game changed a lot in the last four/five years…
Reid is a monster
reeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiddddddddddddddddddd
A younger Riley in the background
At 38:06 Humans player should have lost a life from tapping horizon canopy, the game should have been over a turn earlier. Oh well.
Tay Jun Hao top decked so much game 1 lol
duke will also be good, but I've never seen anyone with his luck. He drow everything he needed when he needed
Delete first game Tay got some good draws too though
Duke's deck is basically nothing but gas. Thats the power of GBx decks - they will topdeck better than you 100% of the time, unless you're on Tron. It was pretty inevitable that Duke would find live cards sooner or later. Did he get lucky with the draws? Sure. Did he also play pretty much perfect lines? Yes.
Just a bad matchup for Humans
WOTC needs to unban a lot more than just frickin bloodbraid elf... there are plenty of "safe" cards to unban. Like stoneforge mystic, birthing pod and a bunch more. The community says that modern is in a very diverse and healthy state but all I am seeing is more of the same OLDER crap with a dash of new... If WOTC doesn't change soon then Hasbro will sell out and there will be millions of players left heartbroken.
Aaaannd they just unbanned *jace the mind sculptor.*
Someone at WOTC must have read your comment. lol
No they didn't, it's just to boost the sales of Masters 25...
Modern was very diverse, well.... not anymore....
Roland Van Der Nat 2 months later, still an excellent format
Jup, good thing I was wrong! :)
Even as someone who would love to play pod, it is not at all safe to unban.
Amount of luck and top-decks at Reid's side was just immoral.
