So, having the advantage through the whole tournament and losing makes you the champ? Awesome logic there. With a massive 95-5 advantage in the final he lost. You all have odd notions of what a champ is.
Shahar played extremely smart. And it isn't that Reid's deck shat on him, it is a deck that is prone to having awful hands like that every few games. It happened twice to him in the top four. Game three and four Shahar strictly outplayed him. If you want to call luck then I would counter that game one and two that Reid got extremely lucky draws and Shahar's deck shat on him. That was awesome. From losing on a 2-0 to winning on the 5th game for the world championship finals, it's about as drawn out and epic as you can get =D

Look at the spoilers so far for the upcoming sets (Zendikar rising, commander legends). The cards look unique and powerful, but not dramatically game-changing which is what we want, no?
It's a win hard or lose hard deck. It was a really smart metagame pick for Reid. Sharhar did a really good job of side-boarding, and with a little bit of luck was able to outrace him at times. Pretty impressive for a control player.
It was almost irritating listening to the commentator's openly rooting for Reid Duke. We know he is already a fan favorite, and he has the percentages in this matchup (even though that idea is more for the lesser players who not only don't know what they are talking about, but also believe the deck does more than the player). Talking about the entourage who will swarm the stage, the celebration that will dream, proclaiming Shahar "getting lucky" or "pulling off an upset". They only ever referred to Reid when talking about someone looking to win a World Championship. Even in the games where Shahar lost, he was one burn spell from winning, and he kept getting better in the match as it went on. For anyone claiming Shahar got lucky because of the game 5 mull: LSV told everyone at the beginning of this match that the deck (Reid was playing) is prone to aggressive mulligans because it runs so few lands, and so few creatures. He tossed back a 2-lander on 6 that he could have played, and a 3-lander on 5, but the lands it runs are ALWAYS risky (Canopy getting sacked, Arbor getting killed). Never mind the fact that Reid's first four games were absurdly great draws, and he admittedly played it almost perfectly. But Shahar played spectacularly to push it 2-2. This was the coronation of a relative unknown great player, and M:tG's only 2-time world champion. Not the "due" of a fan favorite. No one is "due" or deserving of anything; earn the damn thing. I was actually glad when Shahar pulled this off.
Uberkitty55 Pretty sure someone did he said this: "Reid Duke sounds like penguinz0 One of the announcers sounds like Badger from Breaking Bad" the BADGER is the part i heard so someone got me here.
Everybody probably already does this, but even if you're not side boarding you add your whole side board to your deck, and remove 15 cards. If your are sideboarding, Your opponent won't know how many cards you put in. If your aren't sideboarding, they still think about you playing a deck with 15 different cards in it.
Reid playing green is always my favourite thing to watch, so despite him losing, I keep coming back to this match. The triple mulligan was especially hard to watch though.
I just recently started playing magic.. these commentate videos/streams are impossible for me to understand what's going on. I understand that I should increase my knowledge on the cards.. but can't the shout casters explain what's going on a bit more?
A person who just learnt how to play Chess isn't going to learn a damn thing about playing Chess by watching Nigel Short vs Garry Kasparov. The same applies to Magic. The Pro Tour is not the place to learn about the game. If you want to watch people who are better than you at playing Magic - which is a great way to learn how to play the game - I'd recommend you find someone who streams Magic Online and plays a lot of Limited i.e. drafting, because then they'll almost exclusively be playing with cards from the most recent expansion pack. LoadingReadyRun would be my personal recommendation.
Don't feel bad, I've been playing for a couple months now, and this is the third time I've watched this match and the first time I actually understand what is going on.

This game focuses a lot on the fine details of the text on the cards.. If I don't even know what the card is called, how am I supposed to know what it does? But I do understand where you're coming from. I'll check out some other videos.
Will T Sorry but the Pro Tour isn't going to tell people what each individual card does. It's about the best playing the best, not about teaching the basics of the game. I'm by no means an expert, but trust me, the pro tour is now where to learn the ropes.
What do they mean by "standard" and "modern"? This is probably a really stupid question, but I have just started playing and only come across one set of rules.
rules are the same, it's just about what cards are legal, Modern plays with everything since like 10th edition I believe (I dont play modern so the specific set could be wrong) and standard only plays with the most recent cards, generally 2 blocks at a time I believe but not positive on that since I think 3 are legal rn...anyway that's the difference in standard modern
What lands does Shahar have at the end of the first game? I cant tell but it looks like he has 2 red sources and a blue, so at the end of Dukes turn couldnt he have played a lightning bolt, done 3 damage, played a snapcaster, flashed the lightning bolt back, and then had 2 snapcasters to swing with on his turn for 10 damage?
Yes. Most competitive Magic matches are best two out of three, but finals of major tournaments like Worlds and Pro Tours are typically best three out of five.
Michael Sousa I've been playing for 4 years and all of this was an awesome match. Here's an explanation for you if you are starting. Imagine a deck full of Cancels and burn vs a deck full of creatures that you cannot target but is heavily aggressive. Turns out that makes a good game.

I thought about getting into this type of tournie magic but the money it would take every year to stay competitive is just too much for my blood. I mean think about it they probably spend thousands and thousands on cards every year.
Between buying all the cards to forge multiple high competitive decks and paying entry fees and attending Limited format events, I don't suspect they spend more than 3-7k a year in the format they're playing after figuring in card costs, entry fees, and other things needed to be paid for to play. It'd be worse if Legacy was the competitive format. I'd figure that'd tack on another 2-4k on card costs to get everything you need for a format that's so deep.
there aren't many new cards joining the competitive modern decks through new editions, since the cardpool is so large already. There are 3-10 relevant cards per edition and that's it. As long as you don't play standard, the price per year to get the new cards is really low.
A lot of these guys work for major card retailers or are associated with them, so many just simply borrow cards to use in major tournaments or for testing.

I was rooting for Reid Duke! I've played with Shahar (who lives in the US by the way) and he has very poor sportsmanship. It's a bummer to see the nice guy take 2nd place but sometimes the bad guy wins. Shahar played well.
Dude theses guys are so silent wtf? And Reid flips his cards and shuffles his hand to much its so annoying. And they move to quickly it doesnt even seem like they enjoy the game
Complete waste of time sorry. MTG is a great game but when taken to this level it becomes annoying. If you have the time and energy for this stuff rock on but if your like me I'll stick to collecting and playing against friends and foes.
Sry about my poor english but, Someone please explain to me the 26'40'' when Shahar tap 2 manas and cast a lighting helix in a 4/4 white creature and then decides to goes back in his decision.
This is great. Could it have been better filmed? Yes, but I looked up the cards they were using and watched the entire thing. This was a well played game for both of them. Awesome.
It's essentially considered to be blocked by a 0/0, meaning that if the creature has trample, all of it's damage tramples over to the defending player.
Jádson L he did attack (it has vigilance so it didn't tap), Shehar blocked with Clique, then blinked Clique with Restoration Angel before damage, Clique survives and Shehar takes no damage.
Hiding information. It's minor, but every little bit counts. Say you've got three cards in your hand and you happen to draw the perfect response to your opponent's last play. If you just draw and play, your opponent knows it wasn't in your hand before. Now he knows your 3 cards are junk and you're relying on drawing to win, which changes how he plays (and that's bad for you). If you shuffle the card in first though, for all he knows you just drew a land and you've been sitting with this monster in your hand waiting to spring on him. That forces him to act like you have better cards than you do, which is usually good for you. Again it's not much information, but sometimes it's enough to win.
It's also just something to do with your hands. Sometimes it gives you a fresh look at your hand too. I don't do it to bother people. If someone moving cards bothers them so much that's kind of there problem.
Kor Spirit dancer says "Whenever you cast an aura spell", so if you kill it in response you draw a card. It does not matter if the aura resolves or not.

So when is this going to be in the Olympics?
nunca!
I was rooting for Reid Duke! I've played with Shahar (who lives in the US by the way) and he has very poor sportsmanship. It's a bummer to see the nice guy take 2nd place but sometimes the bad guy wins. Shahar played well.
is this constructed or sealed/draft?
Dude theses guys are so silent wtf? And Reid flips his cards and shuffles his hand to much its so annoying. And they move to quickly it doesnt even seem like they enjoy the game
It's just nervous habits and things. These are the finals and winning probably means everything to them.
Ethan Bushard
40000 everything
lol wtf thats wrong
I have no words for this.
plays a awesome deck gets owned by blue
thats how i feel every time
+sourcastle Awesome deck? It's like playing solitaire dude
It's commonly called the most boring deck in modern for a reason.
facts
wtf its completely the opposite. This "blue" deck is actully interactive and takes skills unlike to other.
how come they haven't posted any standard videos lately?
Complete waste of time sorry. MTG is a great game but when taken to this level it becomes annoying. If you have the time and energy for this stuff rock on but if your like me I'll stick to collecting and playing against friends and foes.
and your point?
Figure it out brainiac.
I have an opinion and it matters so I'll post something useless.
If I could win $40,000 by taking it to this level, hell I'd do this for a living.
where are the lands?
My favorite quip from the booth
"'Are you casting it?' has been called." -LSV
where do you get one of those tables?
I have never played or watched a single match of this game before....but for some reason I just watched this entire thing :/ Why?
I like how at 1:27 he says “bogle” exactly halfway between the two pronunciations
is there a prize for this?
Yes. Everyone who gets to the World Championship gets cash, with the #1 player walking away with $40,000.
Met both players. Played a match vs. shahar. Both super nice players.
Sry about my poor english but, Someone please explain to me the 26'40'' when Shahar tap 2 manas and cast a lighting helix in a 4/4 white creature and then decides to goes back in his decision.
At 1:04:04, does Shahar look at Reid's top card while shuffling?
This is great. Could it have been better filmed? Yes, but I looked up the cards they were using and watched the entire thing. This was a well played game for both of them. Awesome.
Did i miss something at 57:19? Why did Reid pass through combat instead of attacking after the Vendilion Clique blink resolved?
Why is Sideshow Bob doing the written match coverage?
1:16:36 What am I missing? Isn't Thundermaw Hellkite + Lightning Bolt = 8 damage? Reid's at 9 life, right?
- 1 because of the tapping of the HORIZON CANOPY.
It's essentially considered to be blocked by a 0/0, meaning that if the creature has trample, all of it's damage tramples over to the defending player.
I don't understand: Why Duke at 55:50 don't attack with your boggle 8/8 first strike vigilance lifelink against 6/5 restoration + clique ?
Jádson L he did attack (it has vigilance so it didn't tap), Shehar blocked with Clique, then blinked Clique with Restoration Angel before damage, Clique survives and Shehar takes no damage.
Why do they constantly shuffle the couple of cards in their hands? What's the point?
1:00:17 why did Shahar put Snapcaster to the graveyard?
Is that @LSV commentating?
yes
Are you casting it?
Anyone know what set his basics are from?
Shenhar's 4 basic lands all come from PORTAL SECOND AGE.
why at 22:04 reid draw a card even if shahar used lightning bolt on kor spiritdancer? is rancor come into play?
Kor Spirit dancer says "Whenever you cast an aura spell", so if you kill it in response you draw a card. It does not matter if the aura resolves or not.
Is that Blake from Workaholics judging?
Why do the players keep shuffling the cards in their hands?
I'm kinda new to Magic, will someone explain to me why in the first game, Duke appeared to have no lands in play?
